summary This work is restricted to the field of Graphics Representation in Architecture, analyzing the use of illumination models which are present at the software usually used for the development of images to describe the architectural objects. The differences between the real scene and the equivalences structured into the world of computer graphics related to the illumination models and light, are specially specified. This work analyses the categories of architectural problems associated to each of the available models; questions how this associations are included in architectural teaching context and studies how associated they are during the academic studies of the architect.

summary The Academic Upgrade Program (.Capacitación Docente.) is been developed in the contexto of a MECESUP project (government funding assignments for education) at the FAU of Universidad de Chile. This program is about upgrading knowledge and user capabilities in Information and Communication Technologies (IT) of our academic team, in order to improve our pedagogical model, and to include these IT into the learning-teaching process for Architecture, Design and Geography. Considering that new technologies are part of the contemporary professional development and they are already included in high school in Chile, they should be part of the university academic environment as well, as an important tool and a link between generations, careers, and stages of education. Estimulating a cultural transformation process in the academic team, promoting transversal network thinking and to generate a base of knowledge in digital culture are our main objectives. This is our contribution to a new academic model, which we need in deed.

summary This paper discusses issues raised during an experiment about the use of digital fabrication technologies in non-industrial contexts in three concurrent fronts: The first front was to get familiarized with the production ecology of a non-industrial building context, the favela. The second front was to verify the accessibility of digital fabrication technologies outside the industry by building a low cost CNC milling machine based on DIY instructions available in the internet. And the last front was to develop useful solutions with this technology to that context. Partial results are guidelines for improving the technology in order to fit the context

summary This paper presents the results of the creation of a game, composed of building blocks, conceived as didactic material for the minimum residences design. The game was designed to be produced by rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing resources. Methodologically, the research was based on both a literature review and an empirical research on the use of a set of building blocks. The text shows the critical analysis and reflections on the results achieved with a workshop entitled "Designing compact homes with building blocks".

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

summary This paper presents a research of the relationship between architecture and context applied to the development of a sensitive pavilion that receives data from live sensors, responds and adapts in real time, generating a biunivocal resilience between the architectural object and the context. The research is developed through the integration between morphogenesis processes, parametric-generative design, Arduino, sensors, input and output devices that connect data and matter, programming and digital fabrication.The result is a pavilion designed and fabricated digitally, that receives data of the environment in real time through sensors and that reacts through changes of color and movements.

summary In moments when the artisanship tradition seems to disappear because of industrial production, we analyze cases where digital fabrication and visual programming were used in Latin American craft, encouraged by architects with skills in digital tools. The situations confront artisans with access to digital platforms and internet, use of learned skills, and the need to modify the technological level in their products and processes. Regional initiatives, which could change contemporary design history in the region with the establishing of a trans-disciplinary systematized synergy, show that traditional materials are used and unique components maintain their originality, from a region that attempts to enter into new global markets.

summary This article addresses an experiment carried out in the context of a digital fabrication laboratory and which purpose was to introduce basic algorithm concepts through the practice of Origami. The logical thinking associated with the area of programming is not common in the Brazilian educational institutions curriculum. This reality is noticeable in the environment of a FabLab, since it has a day dedicated to the free access and use of the community. No prerequisites are needed in order to attend the open day, enabling people to have access to numerically controlled equipments. For a conscientious use of these technologies it is important that the user have knowledge of the algorithmic logic allowing them to go beyond the basic functions inherent to each machine. The activity documented in this article intend to make the algorithmic logic accessible to a lay public insofar as the participant can identify similarities between the programming language and the development stages of the millennial technique of the paper fold.

summary This work intends to contribute to the use of techniques to represent free forms in didactic activities. It enlarges a previous study using only one technique to represent parametric curves and surfaces. It includes the NURBS technique, without discharging the BEZIER technique used before. Some exercises were structured using both techniques to model a representative example of Architecture: the Ronchamp Chapel . architect Le Corbusier. The tasks were compared to highlight the knowledge elements existing in both activities and its necessity of enlargement to move from one to another. Its is observed that the use of different techniques, as NURBS and Bezier, emphasize the specific characteristics of the geometric entities, establishing the control of parameters for free forms in the context of architectural graphics.

summary This paper will address the possibility of a design based on social emergence in contrast with author based design in a realized project. It will discuss the process and its implications within the theory and technological framework of this experience, simultaneously legitimizing the possibility of applying design and digital fabrication technologies in the Latin American context, exposing advantages and disadvantages of the experiment, concluding with a couple scenarios, one in which design is marginalized to technique, and the other were it broadens its field of knowledge.

summary En este estudio comparamos experimentalmente el nivel de comprensión y percepción espacial de un proyecto de arquitectura visualizado usando medios tradicionales versus realidad virtual en un contexto de dise?o participativo. Los resultados sugieren que existen diferencias sustantivas entre el tipo de experiencia espacial que se obtiene según el medio de visualización. La realidad virtual ofrece una posición de participante que parece acentuar los aspectos perceptuales de los espacios, detonando respuestas más sensoriales y menos cognitivas sobre el dise?o que las otorgadas por los medios tradicionales.

The pavilion theme is being increasingly exploited in various universities in the world, in order to work new paradigms of computational algorithmic architecture and new construction process, through digital fabrication labs. In this sense, these exercises can become a privileged and highly effective learning tool, due the impact of the integrated experience between creating (design), construction (to build) and experience (to appropriate the spaces).
