summary This paper critically examines the nature of the dramatic increase in the number of students accepted in schools of architecture in Jordan, and the contradictory decrease in their artistic, creative, thought process, projects problem solving and other skills. The paper also reviews architectural curriculum and courses to identify weaknesses in handling the changes and ultimately within these constraints and in order to handle the students variable potentials, abilities and contradictions, certain exercises in the basic design course are devised in ways that; reduces its dependency on learnable manual skills and conceptual thinking; uses teaching techniques that correlates and incorporates Arts, Architecture and Sciences as complementary topics; approaches and reaches creativity as a procedure not a gift; transfers and travels easily between complexities and simplicities, between natural and artificial intelligence, between abstract and relative thinking; employ geometries and design tools as the main structure of any composition; makes self evaluations of choices, decisions and variables easier. Taking Abstraction as a framework in solving the problem of the exercises gave answers and solution to many problems that was not easy solving under the conventional ways of design.

summary This paper investigates the role of spatial parameters in relation to the economic dynamic embedded in the urban fabric. The key element explored in this study is the role of the urban configuration and accessibility on the success of different business sectors in Switzerland.The underlying hypothesis is that economic markets are constant forces of change influencing the development of cities and functions on all scales. Markets are institutions that reduce people's choices based on a myriad of factors to a single number, the price. Accessibility is a resource for each business that yields multiple values of benefits and transactions in terms of economic properties. This project explores the interaction of multiple measures of accessibility, calculated by Space Syntax analysis, with the success of different markets represented by employment by business sector. 828548 business locations and 44 spatial measures were used to derive associations between them. The results show that the measure of 'Choice' correlates highly for smaller radii and 'Integration' for larger radii with the total number of jobs. The result also shows each sector has a specific set of accessibility measures that allows them to thrive.

summary This paper introduces a dynamic generative modelling system for urban and regional design. Through dynamic modelling the system evolves in time according to the interactions of the planners, decision-makers and citizens. On the basis of several synchronous and/or asynchronous user interactions, models are dynamically generated at run time. The models are built by defining the data (datasets) and the actions to perform on that data (tasks). The system reads and correlates data at urban and regional scale from various authorities to generate dynamic datasets. Tasks are especially powerful when they integrate generative procedures in a hierarchical structure. This allows us to model urban and regional dynamics through the interaction of tasks at micro- and macro-scale. Tasks can also implement either Cellular Automata or software agents. We examine the system application to a case project: the simulation of micro- and macro-dynamics in an Alpine valley, with specific challenges to fit competitive and sustainable growth in a landscape quality perspective. The simulation in spatial and temporal dimensions of regional data provided us with the elements to study the territorial evolution over the next twenty years. Four strategies gave as many scenarios highlighting the results of specific policies.

title Performing Palladio

summary The relevance of music theory as an interpretive framework for the understanding of Palladio's work has been one of the most debated subjects in the realm of architectural theory and criticism. Typically the debate is quite abstract and it focuses on possible mappings between the ratios found in Palladio's plans and corresponding ratios used in contemporary musical temperaments. The paper here rather focuses on the actual performance of the ratios found in Palladio's work and the implications of this performance, melodic and harmonic, for the perception of the space for a situated observer/performer. To that extent the study suggests a model of mapping between space, sound and color and correlates that with polygon partition theory to simulate movement within a space. A brief account of the computer implementation with game engines technology is provided in the end. All examples to test these ideas are based on Palladio's Villa Capra.

summary The architectural design process is very complex and it is not easily confined to a single design environment. As the design process gets more complex due to the technological advances in building materials and construction methods, an integrated design system becomes a central design issue. To have an integrated design system, all applications should be integrated in a unified environment within which there should be a data structure to facilitate an effective data communication among the various design stages and data control facility to seamlessly connect all these applications. A primary purpose of this work is to suggest an object oriented architectural design environment for the essential part of the seamless environment for designing a building. Within the object-oriented design environment, a unified data model and detailed data control module have been implemented to seamlessly connect all these applications. The unified data model organizes the structure of the design data to keep the design consistent throughout the design and construction process. It also helps to do effective data communication among the various design stages to ensure quality and time saving in the final construction of the building. The data management module supports the consistent and easy mechanisms in controlling the data representation through the inter-connected modules. It is also responsible for creating, maintaining, and viewing a consistent database of the design description. In the suggested design environment, each architectural element partially describes the model and individual elements are aggregated hierarchically. Some parts of the projection are defined and other can be inherited from above. Also, creation of an improved or new design element can easily be accommodated in the environment. The integrated database in the suggested environment is the basis by which design data can be shared among the design tools of the design environment. The database organizes the design description within each representation, correlates equivalent descriptions across the representations, and attempts to maintain these correspondences as the design incrementally evolves.

summary Ephemeral art, post-autonomus, unruly, out of the frame or undefined, are the categories which characterize the visual arts today. In that context, we address as case study the work of the Argentinian visual artist Abel Monasterolo. Along with the analysis of their work, we propose an urban intervention in "Ciudad Universitaria", within the framework of SIGRADI 2011. It consists to perform a frieze from the point, the line and the plane. It proposes a visual narrative of "the big bang of artistic creation". This narrative incorporates experiences of augmented culture, like a palimpsest, paradigmatic works of design history. It also includes a scanned self-portrait of the artist. The work of art has a performative character and offers the spectator to participate in strategic moments of the artistic discourse.

summary CAM systems traduce design information from CAD systems in to different manufacturing routines in order to produce NC code for CNC machinery. The output from the CAM software is usually a simple text file of G and M code, usually containing thousand of lines of code. Later this code is transferred to a machine tool using a direct numerical control (DNC) program. This translation process becomes extremely important in developing a digital design and fabrication approach. Consequently the aim in this research is; to investigate CAD-CAM workflow; to analyze final product deviation from design intent; and to determine where in the workflow, and how design strategies and design decisions correlates to manufacturing results.

summary Magnitudes and correlates of stress were investigated among 248 office workplace VDT users and 85 nonuser counterpart using field survey and objective physical measurement technique. Other than a tenuous indication of increased eyestrain and reduced psychological disturbances among users, the two groups were largely undifferentiated on job- attitudinal, affective, and somatic manifestations of stress. However, aspects of working conditions were judged less favorable by VDT users. summary The common understanding of morphogenesis implies a three-dimensional evolutionary change in form witnessed in the developmental process of an organism. This evolutionary process emerges from cell growth, cellular differentiation and environmental changes that generate specific conditions between genotype and phenotype. The complex nature of these aspects is intrinsic to evolutionary biology, and its accurate implementation in bio-generated architectures potentiates a twofold understanding of different morphogenetic strategies and its spatial consequences. Within this premise the morphogenetic factors of cell-differentiation and cell-signaling become a crucial aspect in a real-time communication system between an archetype and space, thus performing within particular modes in which design correlates to space. The paper hypothesizes and tests the use of Cell-Signaling as system of communication that governs fundamental cellular activities within the process of Gastrulation. This process occurs in early cell-embryo development and where communication between cells is favorably active and cellular the structure is established. The Emosphera project is a technical re-contextualization of this specific morphogenetic process. The principles denote a genetic code of the object can be scripted in a CAD environment and reproduced real-time by means of communication through a multimedia platform, which render form as a consequential aspect.

summary This work describes a design methodology to minimize direct solar incidence in facades, exploring the shape of brise-soleil. The methodology correlates parametric design and evolutionary algorithm, through the integration of computational tools. At first, are established shade’s shape variable and restrictions, through the Rhinoceros software and Grasshopper plug-in. Subsequently, the shape is studied to minimize the sunlight incidence through the genetic platform ‘Galapagos’ and the simulation software ‘Ecotect’. The results indicate the relevance between the parametric design and the evolutionary algorithms during the project process, reducing the time in researching for optimized solutions.

summary This paper investigates the potential of a digital geometry system to integrate structural performance-based design and robotic fabrication in the scenario of building a large-scale non-uniform timber shell. It argues that a synthesis of multi-objective optimization, design and construction phases is required in the realization of timber shell construction in architecture practice in order to fulfill the demands of building regulation. Confronting the structural challenge of the non-uniform shell, a digital geometry system correlates all the three phases by translating geometrical information between them. First, a series of structural simulations and experimentations with different objectives are executed to inform the particular shape and tectonic details of each shell component based on its local condition in the geometrical system. Then, controlled by the geometrical system, a hybrid process of different digital fabrication technologies, including a customized robotic timber mill, is established to enable the manufacture of the heterogeneous shell components. Ultimately, the Timber Structure Enterprise Pavilion as the demonstration and evaluation of this method is fabricated and assembled on site through a notational system to indicate the applicability of this research in practical scenarios.
