summary To ensure access to sunlight in urban planning, specialized software is available. Mainly used in the initial stages, these tools allow the study of the environmental performance of the proposal. However, neighborhood impact is seen as a secondary aspect, usually evaluated with GIS tools, simulating pre-existing or proposed situations. However, visual programming tools allow, data processing in addition to parametric modeling, streamlining the process of analysis of architectural and urban pre-existences and proposals. From a case study, we present a methodology that uses these tools to demonstrate the loss of daylight performance of open spaces due to urban densification.

summary Daylight standards are one of the main factors for the shape and image of cities. With urbanization and ongoing densification of cities, new planning regulations are emerging in order to manage access to sun light. In Estonia a daylight standard defines the rights of light for existing buildings and the direct solar access requirement for new premises. The solar envelope method and environmental simulations to compute direct sun light hours on building façades can be used to design buildings that respect both daylight requirements. However, no existing tool integrates both methods in an easy to use manner. Further, the assessment of façade performance needs to be related to the design of interior layouts and of building clusters to be meaningful to architects. Hence, the present work presents a computational design workflow for the evaluation and optimisation of high density building clusters in urban environments in relation to direct solar access requirements and selected types of floor plans.

summary The accelerated rate of urbanization in China is the motivator behind this paper. As a response to the observed monotonous housing developments in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) and elsewhere our method exploits Cellular Automata (CA) combined with fitness evaluation algorithms to explore speculatively the potential of building regulations for increased density and diversity through an automated design algorithm. The well-known Game of Life CA is extended from its original 2-dimensional functionality into the realm of three dimensions and enriched with the possibility of resizing the involved cells according to their function. Moreover our method integrates the "social condenser" as a means of diversifying functional distribution within the Cellular Automata as well as solar radiation as requested by the existing building regulation. The method achieves a densification of the development from 31% to 39% ratio of footprint to occupied volume whilst obeying the solar radiation rule and offering a more diverse functional occupation. This proof of concept demonstrates a solid approach to the automated design of housing developments at an urban scale with a ,yet limited, evaluation procedure including solar radiation which can be extended to other performance criteria in future work.

summary The densification of urban spaces is a major challenge for future cities. With new forms of online consultation, we observe a movement towards open government in urban planning. A stronger participation between a more diverse body of players in a networked environment, is unveiling various discrepancies in the understanding of projects by the different actors in planning, due to access to and the comprehension of planning information. To recognise and utilise the associated capabilities of current transformations, communication between the actors in planning and their sharing of knowledge is vitally important. Information visualisation is an essential form of communication, prompting this explorative paper in considering elements specific to games visualisation and their implications for urban planning. Based on a framework for information visualisation in games it was found that the specifications for actor groups in planning processes mirror the specifications specific to target audience groups in games.

summary We present our investigations focusing on finding ways to design structural solutions that respects criteria of efficiency, architectural intentions as well as intrinsic properties of the geometry. These are attempts to embed structural analysis results into the design space so that its form and structure will be affected by this information. The three examples show different approaches we have taken depending on the stage of design in which our processes intervened. The three approaches are Densification, Alignment, and Extraction.

summary Re-densification of inner-city areas is a highly topical socio-political issue. In order to meet the increasing demand for centrally located living space, the cities have to amend building laws. At present, there are no analytical means of directly comparing and assessing different strategies and measures aimed at identifying the potential for internal development in specific urban quarters and learning about the consequences for the citizens. In this publication, we describe an interactive digital tool that monitors the key building codes and visualizes their effects on the urban structure in real-time, so that this can serve as an informed basis for debate and argumentation in the political decision-making and planning process, consequently supporting the development of re-densification strategies that are well-suited to their urban context.

summary Cities will have to become denser to accommodate expanding urban populations, creating a challenge for urban mobility. Existing urban infrastructure must be retrofitted to promote the use of collective and active modes of transportation. This article presents a prescriptive grammar, for retrofitting urban street design in the context of densification, based on patterns extracted from current guides and manuals. This prescriptive grammar is a crossover between concepts of shape grammar and pattern language, joining generative capabilities of geometric shape grammars with descriptive and prescriptive approaches commonly referred to as design patterns. An example is presented to illustrate its application.

summary This article presents a literature review on the relationship between urban design and travel demand, and systematically maps existing studies in generative, parametric and procedural urban modeling that have approached the subject. The methods used in these papers are discussed, and the computational tools described in them are analyzed to identify how they can be used to support the design process for retrofitting urban streets. The findings are used to identify what further developments are needed in order to allow for visualizing the impact of design decisions on modal share.

summary By looking at time-tested recurrent design patterns drawn from Portuguese vernacular settlements, the present research tries to address the problem of developing sustainable urban solutions for scattered low density territories throughout Portugal. The research departs from the hypothesis that Portuguese vernacular settlements contain morphological characteristics that can be captured and reused in new designs: this may be particularly useful for rethinking extensive suburban territories’ densification conditions, in order to enhance both their consistency and sustainability. Urban sprawl and uncontrolled space consumption have often hastened the problem of territorial sustainability, that’s the reason why completing, restructuring and enhancing dispersed built environments is of paramount importance in order to foster both cultural and economical sustainability in contemporary Portugal. This project ultimately aims at contributing towards the definition of design procedures and planning tools for the re-urbanization of extensive urban fabrics. One of the major objectives is developing a decision making support tool for generating meaningful and coherent interventions in dispersed urban fabrics which could foster connectivity, integration and quality of life, by doing so this work tries to propose a novel methodology that could prove to be valuable in different contexts, even outside Portugal.

summary This paper presents an approach for microclimate aware densification of urban areas by creating best practices for an in situ application for block-size urban developments.The discussed procedure generates and evaluates urban block types according to microclimate criteria by integrating climate and comfort parameters in the design process of existing urban areas. It supports urban designers by generating design strategies that aim for climate, comfort and spatial as well as for urban design qualities.To achieve this, a multi-step method with different analysis and research processes has been set up. At the end, a parametric envelope tool was created for a local case study area by incorporating pre-defined design strategies built on previous investigations as urban design strategies. It is expected that this envelope tool can be transferred to similar urban development activities and guide microclimatic versus densification trade-offs. The presented approach can be applied from street canyon to block size urban situations.
