title Finding of Form

summary The intention of the thesis is to explore the spatial effect created when multiple forces interact in the formation of space. Instead of modeling the form, an internal generative logic is articulated which then produces a range of possibilities for the “fi nding of form”. As a first step creative relationships are being built between the objects in the space and different behaviors are assigned to them. This way, objects interact with each other rather than just occupying space. New fields of infl uence are added or new relations made, creating new variations. These interdependencies then become the structuring, organizing principle for the generation and transformation of form. The surface boundary of the whole deforms as fi elds of infl uence vary in their location and intensity. The insertion of the dimension of time gives the opportunity to follow and observe the deformation process and establishes a relation of continuity between the objects and the space.

summary The author describes the basic principles for measuring architecture from the point of view of Fractal Geometry outlining the principle connections between Fractal Geometry and architecture, giving some examples and explaining the Box-Counting Method, which is an easily manageable method that can be applied to elevations. The paper not only deals with problems arising from using the Box-Counting Method but also with its relation to visual perception. It shows how the Box-Counting Dimension DB of façades can be measured with the help of a software program that was written by the author and has been implemented into AutoCAD. Finally, results of different configurations are given for the Koch curve and Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright, showing the accuracy of this measurement method.

summary The concept of describing and analyzing architecture from a fractal point of view, on which this paper is based, can be traced back to Benoît Mandelbrot (1981) and Carl Bovill (1996) to a considerable extent. In particular, this includes the distinction between scalebound (offering a limited number of characteristic elements) and scaling objects (offering many characteristic elements of scale) made by B. Mandelbrot (1981). In the fi rst place such a differentiation is based upon a visual description. This paper explores the possibility of assistance by two measurement methods, fi rst time introduced to architecture by C. Bovill (1996). While the box-counting method measures or more precisely estimates the box-counting dimension D b of objects (e.g. facades), range analysis examines the rhythm of a design. As CAD programs are familiar to architects during design processes, the author implemented both methods in AutoCAD using the scripting language VBA. First measurements indicate promising results for indicating the distinction between what B. Mandelbrot called scalebound and scaling buildings.

title VRML History: Storing And Browsing Temporal 3DWorlds

summary Spatio-temporal data are presented and explored by VR-based visualization systems which offer 3D-navigation and time-navigation for better immersion and analysis. If the visualization results are disseminated on the WWW, they are mostly transformed into videos or, recently, into animated VRML-files which neither support 3D-navigation nor time navigation nor a time-referenced data representation. In this paper, the script language VRML History is proposed which supports the description of spatio-temporal worlds on the internet by conceptually extending VRML with a new time dimension. This is realized by a set of new nodes representing temporal geometries and time references, and a set of Java-classes extending standard VRML-browsers to perform time navigation.

title Computer-stimulated design: construction of a personal repertoire from scattered fragments

summary This paper describes some possibilities of creating and structuring a personal digital memory capable of facilitating architectural design and design learning. The raw materials of this memory are different representations that can be found on the Web. Having interpreted these representations, one is able to construct a meaningful memory, educated and personal, which can be called upon subsequently during the design phase, as long as one has a medium that can represent this memory and put it to good use. As a practical, effective application of this process, we will describe part of a configuration geared towards the learning of architectural design. This configuration is composed of various elements, precisely arranged in space and time in a set of interrelations and interactions. The design student is placed at the centre of the arrangement, from where he or she can call on a broad spectrum of possibilities from the Web as provider of image documents. When necessary, students can use specially developed software that allows them a verbal and pictorial interpretation stimulated during particular phases of the learning process. In this way, through pictorial material presented on the network, the students can build up a digital library appropriate to their own understanding of architecture and their own representation of the world. At this point, they can abandon the universe of digital documents and media and return to the world of materials and shapes in intensive design studio sessions, where slowly maturing ideas can at last find concrete form. Thus, we deal with the relationship between the public, shareable aspect of the documents, and the private aspect: the individual interpretation of these documents. In the same way, we show how, within the framework of the teaching programme that has been set up, and without interference, this relationship between public and private can be linked into a dimension of the work of learning which is at times personal, at times collective. The conclusion attempts to outline the issues raised by this sort of configuration, and to show how thoughtful use of computers and networks can stimulate and enrich design rather than just "aid" it, as is generally accepted.

title Shapes, Numbers, Perception: Aspects and Dimensions of the Design-Performance Space

summary The design-performance space denotes a virtual space that can be constructed based on discretized design variables and performance indicators. For an n-dimensional design-performance space, n = d + p,whereby d = the number of discrete design variables, and p = the number of discrete performance indicators. Once constructed, this space can be visualized and used by the designer to explore the relationship between design variables and corresponding performance attributes. We present, for the building design domain, an approach to generation and exploration of the design-performance space. In this approach, an initial design is used to generate a set of alternative designs that collectively constitutethe design space. One way of doing this relies on the "scalarization" of design variables. The scalarization leads to the representation of a building as a point in a d-dimensional design space. Each coordinate ofsuch a space accommodates a salient (semantic or geometric) design variable. Subsequently, the entire corpus of design alternatives is subjected to performance modeling. Based on the modeling results, an ndimensionaldesign-performance space is constructed. We specifically address the potential for and limitations of describing building geometry in terms of a continuous scalar dimension of the design space. We introduce the concept of "Relative Compactness", which is derived by comparing the volume tosurface area ratio of a shape to that of a (compact) reference shape with the same volume. We present the results of an empirical study, which shows a significant correlation between the numeric values of relativecompactness and the subjective evaluation of the compactness of architectural shapes.

summary From a critical point of view regarding Smart Cities, this paper presents an overview of Brazilian policies concerning the application of Internet of Things (IoT) on public transportation systems, using as a case study the city of Belo Horizonte. We performed a critical analysis of its public transportation system considering the already installed IoT infrastructure, including mobile communication technology that uses distributed locative media among users. Our main focus was understanding its use, potential and political dimension, specially concerning terms of use and data distribution and sharing between users, public administration and private companies that compose the transportation system.

summary Architects have always needed somewhere to draw. History has seen dirt, stone, wood, and paper each serve in turn as the architect’s medium. Every technological advance has helped to manifest these exploratory visions in ever-increasing fidelity, while influencing the way in which the design process is conducted. Computer technology is the latest step in this progression, adding a third dimension to the architect’s drawings. Programs like form•Z, 3DS max, etc. allow the architect to build lifelike models and take clients on fly-throughs. Now, virtual reality has advanced architectural drawing to “full body design”, letting architects experience their creations, rather than just seeing those creations in front of them. summary Many past efforts have addressed design integration in terms of inter-operation among design tools/applications. In this paper the authors attempt to stress the social dimension of design and the role of explicit support for human level interaction during design systems integration. A humancentred approach will be proposed by taking design integration as collaborative use of design artifacts. A virtual studio environment framework will be presented as an integration vehicle to link social and technical dimensions within a human-human interaction context. A prototype virtual studio environment will be outlined, and a demonstration of using the VSE prototype presented. This will he followed by some discussion on the related research and further work.

summary Collaborative AEC technologies centering around component-based CAD models support architectural and structural perspectives. The construction perspective is often neglected because an important dimension for construction–time–is missing. Construction planners are forced to abstract CAD model building components into schedule models representing time. 4D-CAD (3D-CAD+time) removes this abstraction by linking a 3D building model and schedule model through associative relationships. Adding time to 3D-CAD models extends the use of CAD tools from the design phase to the construction phase. Although commercial 4D tools exist that allow planners to build 4D models and create graphic simulations of the construction process, these tools lack features to support analysis of these models, easy generation and manipulation of such models, and realistic visualizations of the construction process. This paper discusses these shortcomings, highlights requirements for CAD tools to support construction planning tasks, and describes our efforts to develop 4D tools that generate 4D+x models that more realistically represent the construction process.

summary We are dealing with the problem of space layout planning here. We present an architectural conceptual CAD approach. Starting with design specifications in terms ofconstraints over spaces, a specific enumeration heuristics leads to a complete set of consistent conceptual design solutions named topological solutions. summary This paper deals with a project that has been done to Aceco TI Ltda`s company. It is about a software development, in AutoLisp programming language (under AutoCAD´s platform), which helps to the project and calculation of strong-rooms components. Those rooms are completely sealed, making use of high technologies materials as sealing, allowing computational equipments and enclosed information to be protected. The developed programme contains routines that allow the precise dimension of structural component, as floors, walls, doors and ceilings. Therefore, it is possible to fabricate special pieces with accuracy. Moreover, the programme calculates a series of other components as friezes, drips, luminaries, sealing tapes and silicone conduits. Then, yonder saving time on project, this system allows, on the one hand, each piece to be produced in factory with exactness accuracy, making assembly easier. On the other hand, allows assembly to be started with all necessary elements, reducing time and costs. [Full paper in Portuguese]

summary This present work pretends to advance over the relationship between art and new technologies, as we un- derstand them in the project of CREAR/UNL "Lines on the river: a cartography of the variable". This multidisciplinary, collective creation will capture the landscape variability (identity feature of our islands) as an aesthetic fact. For a period of six months, the successive journeys on the river draw lines that connect points in the island territory that surrounds Alto Verde, and add georeferenced captures, satellite images, artistic records, and photographic observations. The narrative will of this cartography is finally translated in a multimedia product/installation that addresses this dynamic dimension increasing the opportunities for understanding the territory.

summary The ability to arrange information graphically in digitally represented Cartesian space offers obviousadvantages over two-dimensional graphical reductions. Adding time to the spatial palette provides adynamic dimension. Cartesian space used for these purposes, however, reinforces an ocular-centricapproach to information delivery. We can include sound in order to seek a sensory balance, therebyimproving cognition and enhancing dimensionality within an ‘information space’, especially for complexmaterial requiring greater interactivity or ‘audience’ participation. summary In our ever increasing media(ted) world, the robustness of digital communication networked environment is transforming how we relate to our environment. With the rise of the Internet of Things (IOTs) and other ubiquitous mobile communication devices connecting our bodies to our environments, our spaces are requiring a recalibration of the 'well tempered environment'. As technological devices are becoming seamlessly fused with our everyday lifestyles, habits and spaces, articulating experience is one of the most important topics to discuss in human-centered approach to design. This paper presents the initial methods for a data-driven process to enhance human experience as the central motivation. Combining knowledge from neuroscience and experimenting with embodied medias such as Virtual and Augmented Reality (+ MR) , the inquiries into the human dimension is explored in novel ways. The aim is to show how data-driven experiments could be used to assist designers find better performative solutions and that new collaborations between scientist and designers are on the rise as data moves fluidly between bodies and spaces like air in our 21st century.

summary For the Toraja people in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the engraved ornament (Passura’) means more than a simple decorative element. More importantly, Passura’ also serves as a symbolic icon to convey spiritual messages. However, only few people actually understand the underlying meaning behind the ornament. Consequently, those without this knowledge can only appreciate the aesthetic dimension of Passura’. Our computational design research focuses on under-standing the visual–linguistic aspect of Passura’ using Descriptive Grammar method to investigate how meanings are embedded on the ornaments. The design rules and their description are synthesized into a shape-to-text grammar that can read the ornament as a text, and into a text-to-shape grammar that can write a text into an ornamental design. Preliminary results of this grammar demonstrate how Passura’ works as an active indigenous communication device, rather than simply being a passive decorative element.

summary In the ever-changing “new economy”, buildings are among the few capital goods that are actually left. The Construction Industry drives a very high level of resources, marking the paths of the economy. It is, however, a non-integrated process, with few or none sinergies and with a relatively ambiguous relationship with technology. Moreover, we architects have limited ourselves the role we play, concentrating more in representation than in the work as a whole. The proposal wants to conceive our work as a long-term Strategic Alliance between several actors around the building: Customers / Manufacturers / Vendors / Architects / Specialty Engineers / Builders / Contractors / Managers / Supporters / Users, and so on We are facing a historic opportunity to clarify the relationship of our Industry with technology, allowing it to gain its true dimension on this century. Besides, this will re-define the role of the architect in the Industry: we will evolve from designers, project-oriented, to be creators, owners and managers of “Virtual Buildings” that manage, coordinate and give value to the building as an integrated process, and co-exist with it along its lifecycle.

Within the digital environment, we can no longer continue thinking in terms of "project" and "object" in a traditional manner. The digital object responds to new requirements. From the emergence of virtual environments, the "object" must be considered as a communication process. The object has reached a new dimension, no longer from a solid material structure, but as a dynamic organization in constant change. The possibility of showing reality through models within the digital environment may only be understood as an approach, partial and relative, to the complex processes of information organization.

title Piecewise Linear Approximation on Triangulations of a Planar Region

summary For any triangulation of a given polygonal region, consider the piecewise linear least squares approximation of a given smooth function u. The problem is to characterize triangulations for which the global error of approximation is minimized for the number of triangles. The analogous problem in one dimension has been thoroughly analyzed, but in higher dimensions one has also to consider the shapes of the subregions, and not only their relative size. After establishing the existence of such an optimal triangulation, the local problem of best triangle shape is considered. Using an expression for the error of approximation involving the matrix H of second derivatives, the best shaped triangle is seen to be an equilateral transformed by a matrix related to H. This triangle is long in the direction of minimum curvature and narrow in the direction of maximum curvature, as one would expect. For the global problem, a series of two lower bounds on the approximation error are obtained, which suggest an asymptotic error estimate for optimal triangulation. The error estimate is shown to hold, and the conditions for attaining the lower bounds characterize the sizes and shapes of the triangles in the optimal triangulation. The shapes are seen to approach the optimal shapes described in the local analysis, and the errors on the triangles are seen to be asymptotically balanced

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.
