summary This paper describes the development of a structure named Tentacles, belonging to the “Tele-biosphere” a wider project that explores the communication between hybrid systems that are both natural and artificial. Tentacles uncharted geometry is alive in many senses introducing structural difficulties inexistent in traditional beam and column framework. The initial form required structural expertise that the authors formally don’t possess, together with cost and manufacture constrains. To overcome these difficulties, a strategy based on the analogy with vertebrate species was developed, using discs, vertebrae, spine, tendons and tentacles. Authors argue that to solve this problem it was necessary to regain material intuition, combining computation with analogic thinking.

summary An introduction to knowledge based systems is presented to point out possibilities and limitations of the new software and hardware technology now beginning to be available. A pilot study on the use of an expert system shell (the ES/P Advisor), is briefly discussed. A part of the Swedish concrete building code was implemented in the expert system shell to demonstrate the use of an interactive consultation system. Ideas on how compact video-discs can be used in this type of systems are also put forward

summary Much of the building designer's time is taken up correlating the various sources of information so as to incorporate it in the design within a limited time span. The building information service should be able to provide him or her by the up-to-date information in a user friendly format. Optical disc technology makes it possible to combine different forms of building data into images which can be mass stored and randomly accessed on a single disc, with the minimal response time by personal computer or CAD- workstation. In this paper the use of various forms of optical disc technology in construction industry and the prototype video disc produced by VTT are described.

summary This paper presents empirical research into the acoustic performance of randomized robotically fabricated patterns. Randomness is introduced as degrees of variations in code, both supported by quasi-predictable variations in a computational process, and the select changes through multiple variables in precise robotic fabrication that extend the spectrum for manufacturing diversity in micro-geometries that can change the acoustic response of space. Through physical acoustic testing of scale model 1:10 prototypes in a scale model reverberant box, and consecutive re-modelling of sound discs based on root mean square and depth comparison, a tendency for acoustic behaviours both for scattering and absorption could be demonstrated that relates low spatial frequency magnitude of surface modulation closely to scattering coefficient in a limited case study of six samples. As a result, the study presents a mathematical model that links form and material for sound scattering.
