title Design and digital manufacturing. From the Chilean boats to the double curvature roof [Diseño y manufactura digital. De la embarcación Chilota a la cubierta de doble curvatura]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 290-294
summary The objective of this paper is to recover and highlite the constructive processes and the assembling of Chiloean wooden sea crafts, through the establishment of relationships between the design and digital specification for manufacturing of double curve roof, and traditional construction techniques of boats. The research is based on the exploration of digital constructive techniques, which integrate the design and the manufacturing systems of double curvature surfaces. By means of the reinterpretation of the constructive processes and the structural system of the Chiloean sea crafts.

title Kerfing2: Una técnica para el diseño, fabricación y optimización de elementos de doble curvatura a partir de placas rígidas de madera [Kerfing2: A technique for the design, manufacture and optimization of double-curved elements from rigid wooden plates]
source SIGraDi 2017 [Proceedings of the 21th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-227-439-5] Chile, Concepción 22 - 24 November 2017, pp.307-313
summary We present a novel technique for the design, optimization, and fabrication of plywood double-curvature building components, based on an ancient woodworking method known as kerfing. We explain the principles of geometric optimization, their implementation into computational algorithms, and show the first prototypes as proofs of concept (PoC).

title Máquina CNC de 7 ejes para cortar poliestireno expandido (EPS) obteniendo superficies de doble curvatura en una sola pasada. [7-axis CNC machine to cut expanded polystyrene (EPS) for obtaining double-curved surfaces in a single pass.]
source SIGraDi 2017 [Proceedings of the 21th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-227-439-5] Chile, Concepción 22 - 24 November 2017, pp.352-357
summary We present a novel CAD/CAM apparatus and method for single-pass cutting of double-curved expanded polystyrene formworks. A rationalization approach was implemented using generic solvers in a popular free visual programming environment integrated into a well-known commercial CAD software, which allows finding elastica curve sections for processing double-curved NURBS surfaces. This procedure allows us to convert bending curves geometry into G-code coordinates for numerically controlling a flexible cutting hot-blade. A prototype 7-axis machine was experimentally validated in a series of cutting processes of EPS formworks to build a double-curved concrete pony wall.

title Hacia un vínculo entre el boceto y las herramientas de modelado NURBS: La representación de superficies de doble curvatura en el diseño industrial [The link between the Sketch and Tools of Modeled NURBS: The Representation of Surfaces of Double Curvature in Industrial Design ]
source SIGraDi 2002 - [Proceedings of the 6th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Caracas (Venezuela) 27-29 november 2002, pp. 289-290
summary This poster shows a methodological approach developed at the School ofIndustrial Design (Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela) in order to achievethree objectives. Firstly, to assist future industrial designers to analyze and guide their ideas during the early stages of the design process with a sort of graphics, whose expressive precision is different to the metric one. Secondly, to help students to improve their graphic skills in order to communicate their ideas to others during the form creation phases of thedesign process. Thirdly, to promote the use of drawing as a way to define a link between hand drawing and modeling in CAD’s NURBS*. These aspects are especially relevant if we consider that such methodological links, although are frequently assumed by some design firms, they have been hardly visualized in the academic environment as part of the “teaching- learning” process.
