title Vilosidades espaciais - Ambientes imersivos e interativos em rede [Space Villosities - Immersive and Interactive Environments in Network]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary With the aim to explore the potential of creating spaces through the Internet, the research is based on Novak.s concepts . .Soundscapes. and .Navigable Music. . for a project that includes the production of a file sharing software (peer to peer) and chat that allows the sonorous and visual representation of the connected users, defining a virtual space, a fluid sonorous landscape, where it.s main constituent substance is the sound. An environment network with participative and collective sound and image being able to be visualized in full screen. This software is the experimental part of the MSc project (still in its initial phase) developed in the School of Communication of UFRJ, in the line of research Communication Technologies and Aesthetics.

title SoundScapes & Architectural Spaces - Spatial sound research in digital architectural design
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 684-689
summary The paper presents ongoing research focusing on the development of digital tools and methodologies for spatial design based on non-Euclidean geometries. It addresses the way sound can be used both conceptually and acoustically in the early stages of the design process, examining digital architectural design and modeling based on three-dimensional sound visualization and the acoustical analysis and evaluation of complex curved surface geometry. The paper describes SoundMatrix, the first part of a digital design tool created by using Max/Msp/Jitter, to assist in the preliminary design of building façades in small-scale urban environments, specifically studying the possibilities of curvature to decrease sound reflection between opposing street façades. Examples from a workshop with the SoundMatrix application illustrate the real-time 3D authoring and sound spatialisation processing currently implemented in the tool.

summary Composition and performance of Computer Music still keep some of the features of traditional music, together with new ones. Rhythm, melody, harmony can still be present in new paradigms (even if they are not necessarily required when dealing with computer music), but new compositional parameters are coming to light, causing the term «music» not always to be appropriate to describe new phenomena of sonic art. This paper will show some new paradigms of this kind of sonic art, as well as different view of old ones. Any past dogmas should be wiped out when dealing with digital arts. The rebellion against tonality of the first half of 20th century is surpassed now, and I believe that new music could use harmonic intervals without generating conflicts with the ideological problems which arose at that time (even if there are still many people who don’t admit it). Actually, digital domain opens a huge amount of unexplored worlds, making any past ideological dogma a prison we should free ourselves from. Nowadays, making music has many things in common with visual arts and scientific research. Many musical parameters can be applied to video arts, architecture, and vice-versa. Structure of sound has a lot of similarities with many other physical phenomena such as inner atomic structure, particle physics, astronomy, biology etc. This paper will deal with new uses and interpretations of old musical parameters (rhythm, harmony, melody) together with a presentation of some of the new ones. Debated topics are: ? Harmonic/inharmonic sounds, rhythm and melodies. The Deep Harmony (the harmony of spheres or cosmic harmony CYCLES). ? The inner structure and evolution of a single sound ? Interpretative music: Music generated by exploration of soundscapes or sonic architectures, generative processes constrained by interpreter’s gestures, state transitions between musical structures. ? Generative music: stocastic generation, algorithmic composition, levels of action. ? Music or non-music this is the problem (a terminology problem) ? Hyper-spatial music, virtual times, hyper-times. Time travels by means of sonic matter. ? Visual music. Generating 3D video by means of musical processes.

title Esquis'sons ! Sound Sketch : A Parametric Tool to Design Sustainable Soundscapes - How to apprehend environmental complexity in a simple tool for architectural design

summary Since the 80s, several researches have developed the theoretical notions of sound effects, sound proxemy, city sound identities, sound comfort, architectural sound prototypes which were meant to help designers consider sound in their projects. Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

title Paisagens Sonoras Digitais: metodologia de representação dos sons urbanos por meio de motor de jogo. [Digital soundscapes: urban sound representation methodology based on game engine.]
source SIGraDi 2017 [Proceedings of the 21th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-227-439-5] Chile, Concepción 22 - 24 November 2017, pp.505-512
summary This paper discusses about soundscape notation possibilities and structures a methodology for representing urban sounds based on game engine technology. Recently, new forms of sound visualization and auralization techniques have emerged within the research fields of Soundscape and Noise Pollution studies. The development of digital media, such as game engines, introduced new forms of audiovisual 3d representations, combining geometry and sound in a structured interactive computational space. This paper addresses these novel methods of representation and reflects upon their contribution for soundscape studies through an ongoing study case.
