title Data Mapping and Ornament in Digital Craft

summary With an ever-increasing index of digital artifacts, we have begun to exhaust variation as an adaptive technique. The problem with incremental modulation (here understood as sequential and slowly progressing change of a set of parameters within a field condition) is that in essence it leads to morphologically equivalent and, hence, repetitive patterns of habitation. While the role of variation proved key in pushing forward an essential body of research testing and optimizing principles of mass customization, its residual effects become critically disconcerting. This paper presents an investigation of tectonic mutations for the generation of form, seen through data simulation experiments and machining artifacts. Through several projects we investigate the effects of ornament created as a result of the new relationship between generative modeling, simulation, and fabrication in the digital age. Subject to (de)generative mutation techniques, ornament can be under-stood as a result of overlaid data, whether the data is performance related or not, in both massing and surface conditions. This new working methodology will mitigate between the incertitude regarding time, history and memory, and by reinventing their relation it will reassess ornament’s agency within the digital culture. Design methods are extended by exploring, collecting, analyzing, and representing data through various materialization processes. Design is therefore reconsidered as being injected with the concepts of data driven design and dependent on the inter-play between performance and aesthetics. In this way, we consider the footprint - or the subsequent impact - of the human onto the nonhuman using artificial intelligence as a medium. These intentionally or accidentally engraved layers of information begin to describe potential trajectories of novel survival modes in the Anthropocene.

summary In Classical Greece the design and construction of buildings were interconnected, forming a single activity. With the development of knowledge and technology, this process has fragmented, giving rise to different activities, performed by various professionals, such as the architect, the engineer and the builder, leading to problems related with information exchange between them. With the research projects Tecton and Technos, we intend to reunite these activities again, seeking to simplify the building production process. In Tecton, we propose an Immersive Virtual Reality Environment to sketch and model objects in an interactive way, using hand gestures and body postures, enabling architects to change between the viewpoint of the creator and that of the user, thereby designing buildings while experiencing them at full-scale at the same time. In the future Technos project, our vision is develop detailed 3D virtual models to serve both as supporting elements for the digital fabrication of building parts and as communications elements for the assembly and construction of buildings.

title Identity and Image of Productive Spaces in the Process of Reuse

summary In the transformation of industrial ruins – machine-buildings belonging to a relatively recent past – the dichotomous processes of change and preservation allow to reinterpret the design action as the intrusion of a new life. In the projects for the reuse and recycling of productive heritage, the delicate balance between the safeguard of the identity and the updating of the image to the changing contemporary needs may be declined through the notions of novelty and originality in architecture. The concept of originality – meant as an original re-reading of the pre-existences – can produce novelty as a new spatial interpretation, capable of generating an authentic innovation even just through limited interventions. Two projects of transformation for productive buildings – both partly realized – may act as research media to describe this transition: ever since the first life of these buildings has been unequivocally concluded, their ruins have become an integral part of the landscape, standing in a state of waiting and calling for projects able to insufflate a second life within them.

summary This paper presents an approach to producing an interactive physical kinetic prototype and its digital simulation for architects using a series of proposed methods. Conventional architectural CAD applications alone are not always sufficient for illustrating ideas for adaptable and responsive architecture that can conditionally change its states over time. The use of technologies from game design and robotics has a potential to extend the role of architects beyond merely providing static formal design solutions to various spatial problems. The paper introduces methods for rapid prototyping and real-time interaction between physical kinetic prototypes and a digital application environment for simulation using readily available commodity hardware, such as Arduino microcontrollers, 9g servo motors, Kinect sensors, and Unity 3D game engine software with its computational physics. The paper also presents case studies using the approach and discusses possible applications and assessment of this approach.

title Algorithmic Thinking in Design and Construction - Working with parametric models

summary This paper examines the parametric model in algorithmic design processes, using the outcome of an educational digital design and fabrication course as a case study. In its long history, algorithmic design as a form-finding method, allowed designers to manage complex non-standard associative geometries, suggesting a shift from the digital representation of form, to its systematic representation into a parametric model through code. Rather than a style or a tool, the parametric model is best defined in mathematical terms; in practice it incorporates the organizational logic of the form and the topological associations of its parts, so that a change in its constitutive parameters will invoke a concerted update of the entire model, and, iteratively, formal and structural variations. In a series of design experiments that took place at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete in the spring of 2015, we used parametric models represented into visual code, from the initial conceptual stage to fabrication. From the experience and outcome of this course, we deduced that, compared to other digital formation methods, parametric models allow the designer to constantly interact with the model through the code, producing discreet variations without losing control of the design intentions, by “searching” into a wide range (albeit finite) of virtual results. This suggested a shift in culturally embedded patterns of modernist design thinking.

summary The research addresses methods of transforming inactive industrial spaces within urban areas as shown on the case study of the former Sisak Ironworks (a part of the research project Heritage Urbanism _HRZZ 2032) . A high level of integration of mapped elements in the urban fabric of the city was proven, which leads to the conclusion that they form a wholesome identity of an industrial city, the infrastructure itself forming a specific type of spatial relation recognised as an industrial landscape. Systematic transformations of these elements are the key to a successful regeneration of derelict areas of the urban landscape in order for them to become a generator of a new urbanity.

summary Responsive architecture is one of the growing areas of computational design that is not getting adequate attention in CAAD curricula. A pedagogical approach to designing responsive systems requires more than the typical knowledge, tools or skill sets in architectural design studios. This paper presents a framework for integrating responsive and kinetic systems in the architectural design studio. The framework builds on findings of two design studios conducted at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. In both studios, students were asked to design elements of responsive architecture that work towards the development of their projects. The paper demonstrates the process and outcomes of both studios. It then demonstrates how concepts of integrated project delivery are incorporated to propose a framework that engages students in designing, fabricating and operating responsive systems in different phases of the design process. A discussion follows regarding dynamics of design studio in light of the proposed framework.

summary In this study, we revisit the concepts of abstraction and materialization with regards to the theoretical framework of new materialism. Underlining the changing relationship between design through abstraction (DtA) and design through materialization (DtM) in design history, we propose an integration of the two towards achieving design emergence. Additional to a theoretical framework, we provide a showcase through material experiments of plaster and abstractions in the form of shape computation. We discuss results as parameters for future digital implementations and potentials for design practice and education.

summary This paper presents progress towards the definition of a motion grammar for robotic stereotomy. It describes a vocabulary of motions able to generate complex forms by cutting, slicing, and/or carving 3-D blocks of material using a robotic arm and a custom made cutting tool. While shape grammars usually deal with graphical descriptions of designs, a motion grammar seeks to address the 3-D harmonic movements of machine, tool, and material substrate choreographically, suggesting motion as a generative vehicle of exploration in both designing and making. Several models and prototypes are presented and discussed.

summary FRP (fiber reinforced polymers) is a family of composite materials combining fibers and polymers to offer exceptional mechanical properties. Its unique material properties have led to its wide application across industries. Although we witness a growing interest in the material in the architectural field in recent years, a significant barrier to its application lies in the need for a mold. The paper describes a new alternative fabrication process for architectural FRP elements that relies on fabric materiality. It suggests a mold free process, combining form finding and garment making techniques, to allow for complex morphologies, surface articulation and variation. The paper describes both the fabrication process through physical experiments, as well as the design process through the use of two design software tools. It demonstrates the potential for sustainable variation of large component facade system.

It shows how new interests along the history of CAAD development motivated the appearance of conferences on specific topics, and it ends identifying a recent interest towards architectural practice and the software development. With this work we expect to contribute to an “archaeology” of CAAD studies.

summary This paper advocates alternative methods to overcome the impossibility of realising ‘perfect’ digital designs. It discusses Hong Kong’s 2015 ‘ZCB Bamboo Pavilion’ as a methodological case study for the design and construction of architecture from unprocessed natu- ral bamboo. The paper critically evaluates protocols set up to deal with errors resulting from precise digital design systems merging with inconsistent natural resources and onsite craftsmanship. The paper starts with the geometric and tectonic description of the project, illus- trating a complex and restrictive construction context. Bamboo’s unique growth pattern, structural build-up and suitability as a bending- active material are discussed and Cantonese bamboo scaffolding craftsmanship is addressed as a starting point for the project. The pa- per covers protocols, construction drawings and assembly methods developed to allow for the incorporation and of large building toler- ances and dimensional variation of bamboo. The final as-built 3d scanned structure is compared with the original digital model. The pa- per concludes by discussing the necessity of computational architec- tural design to proactively operate within a field of real-world inde- terminacy, to focus on the development of protocols that deal with imperfections, and to redirect design from the virtual world towards the latent opportunities of the physical.

summary The research presented in the paper formulates part of the methodological approach of a recently completed PhD thesis. The principle aim of the thesis is to achieve simultaneous integration of tower subsystems which can coherently adapt to their internal and external context during the initial phases of the design process. In this framework, the tower subsystems are grouped as the structural system, floor system, vertical circulation system, facade system, and environmental system. The paper focuses on the implementation of the specific biomimetic analogies towards the integration of tower subsystems through computationally generated dynamic systems. The biomimetic analogies are the mechanical and organizational properties of branched constructions, the mechanical properties of the bamboo stem, and the micro-structure of the porcupine quill/ hedgehog spine. Each biomimetic analogy is described in relation to the design domain. Methods of employing the mathematical and geometrical principles of the biomimetic analogies during design explorations are elaborated. Outcomes of the design output are outlined and discussed with a concentration on achieving tower subsystem integration, differentiation, and co-adaptation properties.

summary Context in Architectural Design can be defined-related-comparable to hypothesis and boundary conditions in mathematics. An eco-system that influences it by means of natural and artificial events, space and time dimension. The research has the aim to analyze the critical issues related to Context by providing a contribution to the study of interactions between Context Knowledge and Architectural Design and how it can be used to improve the performance of the buildings and reducing design mistakes. The research focusing on formal ontologies, has developed a model that enables a semantic approach to design application programs, to manage information, to answer design questions and to have a clear relation between the formal representation of the context domain and its meanings. This context model provides an advancement on the state of the art in simplified design assumptions, in term of ontology ambiguity and complexity reduction, by using algorithms to extract and optimize branches of the graph. The extraction does not limit the number of relations, that can be extended and improve context taxonomy coherency and accuracy.

summary A new approach to design - Curvilinear forms designed in synthetic digital space - indicates the direction of a new turn in architecture, interest in its structural and environmental aspect. The presented case studies show how curvilinear forms of such architecture coexist with the historic context and how they inscribe in to the existing urban fabric with a complex historical substance. Following the Zeitgeist, the new architecture reconfigures the expression, reception and materiality, as well as uses the context to validate its existence. The features of this new architecture may be referred to the achievements of the Baroque and considered in a wider context of historical changes in the urban fabric.

summary A routine is a fixed program, a sequence of actions regularly followed. And the concept can be adapted at different levels in the understanding of the dynamics of cities. Today's built environments are in fact increasingly characterized by series of iterations daily performed by infrastructures, networks, buildings, and people ? as part of a well-structured pattern of components. In this sense, the city becomes a system that not only creates routine, but also pushes its urban mechanisms, its architectural spaces, and its human interactions towards performance, efficiency and the 'standard.' A-priori and top-down implementations of new technologies emphasize routine-based built environments, leaving almost no room for the (extra)ordinary. But how can the spaces, infrastructures, and places that define the social experience of tangible environments not incorporate elements of inherent spontaneity, informality, and even error that let us break routine patterns?

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary Venation structures in leaves fulfil both circulatory as well as structural functions within the organism they belong to. A possible digital simulation algorithm for the growth of venation patterns based on the leaf surface has been described by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary.Cell-based growth algorithms to generate surface meshes have been developed by biological and medical scientists as well as artists, in order to gain an understanding of developmental biology or to generate artistic form. This paper suggests the combination of the two algorithms in order to generate the morphologies of leaves and other structures while at the same time generating the corresponding venation system.The resulting algorithm develops large non-manifold mesh structures based on local rules of division of the individual cells. The venation system develops in parallel based on the flow of the plant hormone auxin from those cells towards the start point or petiole of the leaf. Different local behaviours of the cells towards their adjacent neighbours, towards their rules of division and towards the rules of developing veins have been investigated. The eventual aim of the algorithms is their application as tools to develop architectural and structural morphologies.

summary This paper describes and reflects upon a computational de- sign and digital fabrication research project that was developed and implemented over 2014-2015, with subsequent development continu- ing for applications at present. The aim of the research was to develop methods of modelling, analysis, and fabrication that facilitate integra- tive approaches to architectural design and construction. In this con- text, the development of material prototypes, digital simulations, and parametric frameworks were pursued in parallel in order to inform and reform successive iterations throughout the process, leading to a re- fined workflow for engineering, production, and speculation upon fu- ture directions of the work.

summary This project begins by asking questions about ethics and empathy towards robots, and contemplates the future of their behavior in ways not informed by pragmatics or economy. What if a robot had a hobby? How do robots make aesthetic decisions? What is a robot’s point of view? It seeks to shift perception of robotic agency and allow the audience to embody the robotic gardeners’ vision, behavior and influence its aesthetics. By amplifying perceptual differences between humans and robots and we allow for both tangible and virtual embodiment experiences from multiple scales and perspectives.
