source 2da Conferencia Venezolana sobre Aplicación de Computadores en Arquitectura, Maracaibo (Venezuela) december 2001, pp. 110-115
summary This paper explores the pedagogical use of Internet in design-studio teaching in architectural education. The findings are based on a three-year experience working in semester long projects in which large numbers of participants (from 35 to 300 students) from Miami, Santiago, Valparaiso, Buenos Aires, Rosario, Maracaibo, Caracas and Guayaquil collaborated using the Internet in various format. The majority of the collaboration has been accomplished by using low-bandwidth Internet communication such as Web publishing, Chat, Web3D, RealPlayer, IP videoconferencing, CAD software, and other technologies such as ISDN broadcasting. New grants, obtained from Global Crossing, Cisco, and Lucent Technologies, from the Ampath project at FIU, Miami, is supporting a new series of experimentation with high-bandwidth technologies on the Internet2 Abilene Network.

summary In the actual textual landscape, images work activating cognitive and behavioral processes, disrupting the anthropological context of critical thinking based on logical-formal reasoning. Different types of languages –carrying specific signs and syntax- entwine to oral and written text, augmenting the differences and introducing new problematic in education, situation that requires to be investigate, debate and adequate. From this statement and through the presentation of a didactic experience of parametric systems application in a beginning design studio of Architecture, this paper aims to contribute to the discussion of which are the notions and basic strategies needed to initiate significant learning process that allow to think and design starting from emergent design languages.

source 2da Conferencia Venezolana sobre Aplicación de Computadores en Arquitectura, Maracaibo (Venezuela) december 2001, pp. 194-203
summary The policy rationale for promotion of urban development in the Mexico-Texas borderland of Nuevo León is likely to be sustained and even strengthened. The University of Texasí participation in new town planning for Colombia spans at least three hierarchical levels with students, faculty members, practitioners and government officials joining efforts. At the ìstudio levelî, students completed a comprehensive landscape assessment for portions of the future city using GPS surveying and GIS database and modeling. Graduate students, using field data, updated 2000 maps/shapefiles, and spatial modeling as an analysis tool, created a series of spatial models to produce useful information about the study areaís inherent suitability for agriculture, human settlement and preservation. This work culminated in a research symposium, planning charrette, refinement of land use and infrastructure assumptions, and the development of masterplan elements for the future city. In contrast to the professional firm, the project provides unique opportunities for intensive learning and applied research that contribute to the ecological, social and economic well-being of new cities and developing regions,

summary In design studio courses, assessment helps to improve teaching practice and student learning. Output-Mapping model considers a practical working method, applicable to teaching, based on records of students' outcomes. Visualization is a key component; iconographic resources aid understanding and observation of the territory conquered by each participant throughout the course. The next phase of the project addresses the need to manage large amounts of information generated by a statistical model for assessment. Visualization media used so far have proven limited. A new web system may dynamically visualize relationships between students' records more immediately, precisely and in a network.

title The Future of CAAD: From Computer-Aided Design to Computer-Aided Collaboration
source Llavaneras S., Gustavo J. and Negrón P., Enssa (eds.), 1ra Conferencia Venezolana sobre Aplicación de Computadores en Arquitectura, Caracas (Venezuela) 1-3 december 1999, pp. 19-28
summary The primary uses of computers in the construction industry have been shifting, over the past four decades, from the evaluation of proposed design solutions, to their graphical (and other) representation, and more recently to facilitating collaboration among the various professionals who are involved in the design process. This paper argues that what may appear to be shifts in emphasis actually represents convergence on a single, original goal: the use of computers to help designers (and others who are involved in the design decision making process) to assess the quality, desirability, and the implications of their creations. Such assistance requires representation, communication, and analysis. The paper goes on to show how these individual parts can be joined into an integrated collaborative design environment, where they build upon and strengthen each other. Moreover, the paper argues that this convergence represents the future of CAAD research and development.

summary The BIM software (Building Information Modeling) enables a holistic model -a complete description of the model-building for a complete analysis and validation prior to build, as well as the plotting of final design in architecture and its subsequent maintenance. Users can extend virtually unlimited capabilities. For this reason we have chosen a BIM with programmability by the user to create a calculation module to validate, the heat transfer and possible condensation on both walls and ceilings. The Revit Architecture BIM was chosen using the API (application programming interface) in C#. In this paper, we analyze the experience gained and the results achieved. The objective is to create a calculation and graphing module thermal transmission and condensation.
