summary Over the past year a project has been initiated at Cornell University's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to develop and implement a new direction in mechanical design education. The Cornell Project develops a teaching and working environment that fosters creative problem solving and visual thinking in the design of mechanical systems. The project is more than the creation of a laboratory; it combines curriculum, the designed environment, machinery and sophisticated computing resources in a comprehensive and critical vision of the future of design. The Cornell Project culminates in the Cornell Synthesis Studio, the primary facility for Mechanical Design and Synthesis (MAE 225), a new required course in mechanical design.
