summary The proliferation of computing in architectural practice is turning CAAD knowledge into an essential qualification for a graduate. Inevitably there are different perceptions of how this knowledge should be obtained and what it must entail. Despite these differences it appears that there is general agreement on a combination of components ranging from computer literacy to theoretical knowledge. The transition from academic education to practice means that the graduate has to re-evaluate and re-arrange these components with respect to two main criteria: relevance to practice and their potential for reforming practice.
