title Developing a new endoscopy laboratory with digital tools.

summary Tampere School of Architecture had to leave its old down-town building and move to the TU Tampere university campus in Hervanta, 10 km away. In this process, the 20 years old endoscopic system "The Urban Simulator" was one of the victims. Old mechanical parts and especially the original home-built microcomputer system were too old to compete with modern computer-aided methods. A new endoscopical system is now under construction, using all of the 20-year experience, new technical components and computers for camera control and picture processing. Real-material modelling is used together with computer-aided planning and visualization methods taking the best from both sides.

summary The European Architectural Endoscopy Association was established in connection with the Association’s first international conference on August 25-28, 1993, which was hosted by the Department of Architecture at the Tampere University of Technology. The purpose of the EAEA is to promote experimentation, research, communication, exchange of experiences, collaboration, user participation and teaching in the field of endoscopy and environmental simulation. The first EAEA conference was attended by 25 people from 15 different universities. Working under the general heading of “Endoscopy as a Tool in Architecture”, the conference had three specific themes for the first three days: Review of Existing Laboratories; Theories, Methods and Applications; and the Future of Endoscopy. In this volume we have compiled all the papers that were presented at the conference. The texts have been printed in the form we received them, without any attempt to edit them for consistency in style, adding hopefully to a sense of authenticity. Unfortunately, the impressive videos we saw at the conference on the possibilities of endoscopy and environmental simulation as a tool in architecture, cannot be documented here.

summary The colour video recording Urban Simulator in TUT was built very early compared with the development of video systems. A contract for planning the simulator electronics, mechanics and camera systems was made in january 1978 with two TUT students: Jani Granholm (computer science and engineering) and Ilkka Alavalkama (machine design and automation). Ease of control and maintenance were asked by side of ”human movement inside coloured small-scale architectural models”. From the beginning, all components of the system were carefully tested and chosen from various alternatives. Financial resources were quite limited, which lead to a long building process and to self-planned and produced mechanical and electronical elements. Some optical systems were constructed by using elements from various manufacturers.

summary Deep learning is expected to offer new opportunities and a new paradigm for the field of architecture. One such opportunity is teaching neural networks to visually understand architectural elements from the built environment. However, the availability of large training datasets is one of the biggest limitations of neural networks. Also, the vast majority of training data for visual recognition tasks is annotated by humans. In order to resolve this bottleneck, we present a concept of a hybrid system—using both building information modeling (BIM) and hyperrealistic (photorealistic) rendering—to synthesize datasets for training a neural network for building object recognition in photos. For generating our training dataset, BIMrAI, we used an existing BIM model and a corresponding photorealistically rendered model of the same building. We created methods for using renderings to train a deep learning model, trained a generative adversarial network (GAN) model using these methods, and tested the output model on real-world photos. For the specific case study presented in this paper, our results show that a neural network trained with synthetic data (i.e., photorealistic renderings and BIM-based semantic labels) can be used to identify building objects from photos without using photos in the training data. Future work can enhance the presented methods using available BIM models and renderings for more generalized mapping and description of photographed built environments.

summary Building energy modeling requires skilled labor, and there is a need to make environmental assessments of buildings more efficient and accessible for architects. A building energy model is based on collecting data from the real, physical world and representing them as a digital model. Recent digital photogrammetry tools can reconstruct real-world geometry by transforming photographs into 3D models automatically. However, there is a lack of accessible workflows that utilize this technology for building energy modeling and simulations. This paper presents a novel methodology to generate a building energy model from a photogrammetry-based 3D model using available tools and computer algorithms.

Which factors affect the communication and the quality of interaction? The study is based on two phases: the data input by the designer via devices to the computer environment and the transformation of data into design product in the software by scripting addition. Input devices that are used are 3D mouse, graphic tablet as a tangible interface and implementation of second mouse besides a standard mouse and keyboard. The potential usage of these interfaces in collaborative architectural design process is discussed and proposals are developed in 3ds max scripting environment.

title Reconnoitring computational potentials of the vault-like forms: Thinking aloud on muqarnas tectonics

summary This study sheds light on a holistic understanding of muqarnas with its historical, philosophical and conceptual backgrounds on one hand and formal, structural and algorithmic principles on the other hand. The vault-like Islamic architectural element, muqarnas, is generally considered to be a non-structural decorative element. Various compositional approaches have been proposed to reveal the inner logic of these complex geometric elements. Each of these approaches uses different techniques such as measuring, unit-based decoding or three-dimensional interpretation of two-dimensional patterns. However, the reflections of the inner logic onto different contexts, such as the usage of different initial geometries, materials or performative concerns, were neglected. In this study, we offer a new schema to approach the performative aspects of muqarnas tectonics. This schema contains new sets of elements, properties and relations deriving partly from previous approaches and partly from the technique of folding. Thus, this study first reviews the previous approaches to analyse the geometric and constructional principles of muqarnas. Second, it explains the proposed scheme through a series of algorithmic form-finding experiments. In these experiments, we question whether ‘fold’, as one of the performative techniques of making three-dimensional forms, contributes to the analysis of muqarnas in both a conceptual and computational sense. We argue that encoding vault-like systems via geometric and algorithmic relations based on the logic of the ‘fold’ provides informative and intuitive feedback for form-finding, specifically in the earlier phases of design. While focusing on the performative potential of a specific fold operation, we introduced the concept of bifurcation to describe the generative characteristics of folding technique and the way of subdividing the form with respect to redistribution of the forces. Thus, in this decoding process, the bifurcated fold explains not only to demystify the formal logic of muqarnas but also to generate new forms without losing contextual conditions.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary Machine Learning has become a significant research area in architecture; it can be used to retrieve valuable information for available data used to predict future instances. the purpose of this research was to develop an automated workflow to enhance the implementation of The Egyptian fire & life safety (FLS) code in mega projects and reduce the time wasted on the traditional process of rooms’ uses, occupant load, and egress capacity calculations to increase productivity by applying Supervised Machine Learning based on classification techniques through data mining and building datasets from previous projects, and explore the methods of preparation and analyzing data (text cleanup- tokenization- filtering- stemming-labeling). Then, provide an algorithm for classification rules using C# and python in integration with BIM tools such as Revit-Dynamo to calculate cumulative occupant load based on factors which are mentioned in the Egyptian FLS code, determine classification and uses of rooms to validate all data related to FLS. Moreover, calculating the egress capacity of means of egress for not only exit doors but also exit stairs. In addition, the research is to identify a clear understanding about ML and BIM through project case studies and how to build a model with the needed accuracy.

summary Performance as an architectural design paradigm has been emerging during the recent years. We have developed an understanding that we formalized as a taxonomy for performative architecture that considers performance from three points of view: health, safety and security performance; functional and efficiency performance; and psychological, social, cultural, and esthetic performance. This paper focuses on a design project that explores these ideas as a performative architecture proposal. The project focuses on the architectural transformation of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, 41 forts, as a green belt. This transformation considers a holistic approach of defining a general method and guideline. We developed a series of parametric models for the definition and generation of designs. The first model computes an urbanization level for each fort. Consequently, models are developed in 4 stages: regional design, urban design, building design, and production of a scale model, and these are applied in an iterative manner to reach design outcomes for the project.

summary In the massive computer architecture known as cellular automata (CA), finite-state machines, also known as finite-state automata, are arranged in a discontinuous network that permits local interactions between neighbors. As self-organizing artificial systems, such as neural networks and genetic algorithms, developed from vast systems formed with essential elements and just local interactions, CA is mainly related to artificial intelligence (AI) (a seed interacts with its own neighbors, which are usually just the cells closer to the seed as an activator). In order to produce architectural spaces of various sizes, this research develops digital experiments that analyze the interactions between environmental conditions as input, CA as generator/propagator, and geometrical emergent patterns from knitting and weaving processes as translators/mediators. This method functions as a bottom-up strategy in which information from the environment can influence the activation and deactivation of rules, theoretically fostering a reprogrammable structure that can evolve.

Based on sets of digital experiments, a set of CA using Langton Ants generates different solutions based on the activation and deactivation of rules according to information coming from patterns, creating spatial solutions that deal with built memory three-dimensional emergent structures.

summary Since 2003, we have been developing a pedagogic proposal and didactic material for teaching Light and Optics to kindergarden children that enhances the construction of the first scientific thinking schemes. The design (industrial and graphic) applied to this project has generated an educational product composed of 44 objects. These materials allow teaching concepts such as: combination of colors, light indispensable to see, formation of shadows and images are not objects. These have been developed as inciters of curiosity, capable to awake the innate restlessness of children, achieving to stimulate their creativity. The purpose is to explore knowledge and construct their own ideas; enrich their experiences and inquire a reality that was drawn grey and tedious, generating a process of manipulation-action and then representation-conceptualization. This product has been successfully used as a pilot test in a kindergarden, reflecting significant gains in students’ science learning. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary This paper addresses the importance and development of cultural transformations involving the design process in architecture and the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil construction activities and how its implementation in a coordinated, collaborative and interoperable way contributes to a diagnosis of Clash Detection between diferentes design projects, before building construction, saving excessive costs and rework. Taking as its main reference the BIM Maturity Matrix of Succar (2009), the proposed BIM Project Integration Maturity Matrix contributes to the awareness of bringing designers and builders closer to design activities, to encourage the integration of design processes involving the building, to consolidate an environment of ease of communication between participants, the organization of documentation and, above all, prioritize the compatibility between projects to avoid conflicts, excess costs and rework, resulting in a higher quality of the final project.
