title An Inductive Construction of Rigid Panel-Hinge Graphs and Their Applications to Form Design

summary A panel-hinge framework is a structure composed of rigid panels connected by hinges. It was recently proved that at a generic position, the rigidity of panel-hinge frameworks can be predicted by examining a certain combinatorial property of the underlying graph. In this study, we apply such combinatorial characteristics to create design forms. When considering the application of design forms, we must also take into account non-generic cases. In this paper we develop two new approaches; the first one that the method inductively generates non-generic rigid panel-hinge frameworks consisting of orthogonal panels and the second one that inductively generates non-generic rigid panel-hinge frameworks based on fractal geometry coupled with space-filling convex polyhedron as a construction unit. We will give examples of forms created by the proposed method in order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods to design forms.

This alternative approach is referred to as integrative design, in which methods, processes, and techniques are discovered, appropriated, adapted, and altered from “elsewhere,” and often “digitally” pursued. The designers who engage design as a broadly integrative endeavor fluidly navigate across different disciplinary territories, and deploy algorithmic thinking, biomimicry, computation, digital fabrication, material exploration, and/or performance analyses to discover and create a process, technique, or a product that is qualitatively new.

title The Language of the Prairie : Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses

summary The following parametric shape grammar generates the compositional forms and specifies the function zones of Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie-style houses. The establishment of a fireplace is the key to the definition of the prairie-style house. Around this fireplace, functionally distinguished Froebelean-type blocks are recursively added and interpenetrated to from the basic compositions from which elaborated prairie-style houses are derived. The grammar is based on a corpus of eleven houses from the Winslow house, the evolutionary precursor of the style, to the Robie house, considered by many as the culmination of the style. Much has been written about prairie-style houses - their balance, their debt to Beaux Arts and Japanese design traditions, and their organic qualities. However, such descriptions do not explicitly inform us as to how prairie-style houses are constructed, and consequently provide little help in designing new members of this style. The power of a grammar, such as the one given here, is that it establishes a recursive structure from which new designs can be constructed. Three new prairie houses generated by the grammar as well as step-by-step generation of one of these designs are shown

summary Informal has to do with shifting certainties and the insertion of unexpected, chance and improvisation. The ‘formalization’ of the informal is the subject of this paper; seeking to explore the possibility to have atypical and not rigorous formalizations. But if that is possible until what point informality can be described and designed? By presenting an experimental and realized architectural project we bring forward the necessity of rethinking the concepts of design and construction evolution. There is a strong relation between techniques and the generation, control and construction of complex forms. It is clear that the animation techniques and the dynamic vectorial systems that they are used during the design process played a vital role in the liberation from a pre-conceived typology, as well as in morphing, in controlling, and in materialization of the new that didn’t exist before.

Due to originally practical reasons we are currently relaxing the sequential structure of the CAAD curriculum. This gives us the opportunity to experiment with the integration of the CAAD exercises in the wider design activities of the students, as well as with the structure of the exercises themselves as fully self-contained units.

summary The democratization of computer technologies is changing architectural visualization in two significant ways. The first is that the availability of digital media promotes wider and intensive application of computer visualization. The second concerns the extension of architectural design to visualization in information systems. The transition from analogue to digital visualization relates to fundamental questions ranging from the role of geometric representations in architecture and the relationships between analysis and visualization to the structure of abstraction. In addition, it requires technology and knowledge transfer also from areas other than computer science. The integration of such transfers suggests a flexible, modular approach that contradicts the holistic, integral principles of computer-aided architectural design.

summary Nowadays, common methodologies in telegeoprocessing–telegeomonitoring use telecommunication means such as the GPS in order to transmit geographical coordinates to modelling and simulation systems. These 3D geodetic coordinates (φ, λ, h) can be used by modeling systems via specifics interfaces in order to proceed to real-time modelling of the remotely transmitted data. A previous published work describes a real-time remote 3D digitizing and modelling procedure via transmitted Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the field towards to a CAD system. However, these GPS data must be converted to adequate coordinate’s format (x, y, z) so that the CAD system can use them. This paper presents the computing development of a specific application adapted to a CAD modelling system permitting the conversion of the geodetic coordinates to cartesian coordinates. It presents the relation between geodetic and cartesian coordinates, the options of the final developed application and finally some schematic aspects of the computing process. The application development is realized in AutoCAD modelling system environment via special developed interface in Visual Basic (VBA) and Visual Lisp programming language. The aim of this work is to give the possibility to a CAD modelling system to “translate” and receive automatically geographical coordinates or to convert manually and selectively geodetic coordinates φ, λ, h to cartesian coordinates x, y, z.

summary This paper will relay the initial phase of a collaborative work within partners from the design discipline, systems engineering, and software engineering which deals with the interrelations of “network idea”, “systems thinking”, “collective design”, and “computation”. Vensim– a system dynamics modelling tool developed by Ventana Systems, Inc. in 1992 – has been used in an experimental first year design studio to engage students in systems thinking in the architectural design environment. It has been observed that this tool enabled most students to develop a multi-layered, complex and more controlled design logic and to amplify the cognitive processes at the beginning of the design education. We conclude that in order to fully realize systems thinking in the design process, new ways of integrating parametric design environments and system dynamic modelling environments needs to be investigated.

summary There is an avalanche increase in number of architectonic offices in which the CAD technique is a medium used in the process of projecting. Ways of using CAD programs and computers are the personal matter of every user. The problem we faced was how to use it in creative work. The most interesting moment in process of projecting is the time when the set of lines on computer screen changes in mind into the real architectonic object. The form generated on the screen is new and inspire to farther, this time creative search. We must say that CAD technique let us achieve creativity during projects which means that ability to projects of new things and that state increase together with the increase of using this tool and we consider the claim that CAD may be used in a creative way.
