summary Genetic algorithms are founded upon the principle of evolution, i.e., survival of the fittest. Hence evolution programming techniques, based on genetic algorithms, are applicable to many hard optimization problems, such as optimization of functions with linear and nonlinear constraints, the traveling salesman problem, and problems of scheduling, partitioning, and control. The importance of these techniques is still growing, since evolution programs are parallel in nature, and parallelism is one of the most promising directions in computer science. The book is self-contained and the only prerequisite is basic undergraduate mathematics. This third edition has been substantially revised and extended by three new chapters and by additional appendices containing working material to cover recent developments and a change in the perception of evolutionary computation.

summary In this paper the authors use a specialized version of their Pivot and Probe algorithm to solve generalized transportation problems with side constraints. The dual of an m x n generalized transportation problem with t side constraints is a linear program with m + n + t variables and up to m x n constraints. They solve the dual problem using the probe operation to select only the most important constraints to consider. Also presented is a computational experience on problems of sizes up to 180 x 180, having various degrees of density and having as many as 10 side constraints. It was found that for a given size and density, problems become harder to solve as the number of side constraints increases. summary Green BIM is an emerging concept in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry that combines Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology with sustainable design principles. This approach emphasizes the importance of integrating green strategies into the design and construction process to improve the environmental performance of buildings. It enables designers, architects, engineers, and contractors to analyze the environmental impact of building materials and systems, simulate energy performance, and optimize the use of resources. The aim of the study is to conduct a bibliometric research and systematic analysis on the concept of 'green BIM'. Web of Science database was used to search for publications containing the term 'green BIM'. 252 relevant publications from the fields of construction building technology, architecture, and urban studies were analyzed. It evaluates research themes and trends in Green BIM in terms of publication and citation numbers, research areas, document types, journals, conferences, and books where publications were published, numbers of publications by country, author and co-authorship analysis, and keyword analysis. The keywords were divided into 9 clusters in the VOSviewer and each cluster was examined under a separate title. These titles are urban design, visual programming, design & construction, sustainability, energy efficiency, life cycle assessment, green BIM, project management and green building assessment. The results show that the most current keywords are being evaluated under the heading of urban studies. This situation highlights that, unlike other academic studies, priority is given to urban-scale applications of green BIM Moreover, apart from urban-scale studies, possible topics for academic research involve Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the integration of BIM in the LEED certification process. Currently, the industry and prominent publications prefer technical studies due to the extensive coverage of general inquiries.

summary Present day building product manufacturers face difficulties in scaling businesses. Key decisions surrounding technology adoption are typically measured against feasibility of use and long-term profit. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) provide the potential for teaching building product assembly to employees and construction contractors. This eliminates the need for deploying training personnel to job sites, reduces manufacturing carbon footprint and wastes in product samples required for training. VR content development is difficult and performance within VR applications must be near reality in order to improve adoption of such technology through training. This exploratory study investigates important factors that enhance adoption in business cases through training. We developed an innovative BIM+VR prototype for SwiftWall; a temporary wall manufacturing company, highlighting rigorous processes for in-house BIM anatomy and VR development. This paper provides a step-by-step approach to replicate the prototype. The prototype was tested in several demonstration sessions. The approximate time to install 40 linear feet of SwiftWall is 30-minutes at the simplest level. This timing is equivalent to 28 linear feet installation in 21-minutes achieved with the BIM+VR prototype demonstration. The matching timing results show a significant potential for adoption in business, improved sustainability and employee training from a time and cost-efficient standpoint. Concerns and key issues from development to deployment are discussed in detail. The BIM+VR virtual construction prototype provides adoption potential for training remote partners thereby increasing possibilities of SwiftWall scaling to distributors and product carriers across a larger geographic region.

summary The systems of deployable structures domes with straight bars are directly related to the geometry of solids. They are lightweight, modular, and transformable systems. This research relates to the design of deployable structures with articulated straight bars, with the purpose of being habitable and offering a solution to the light and traditional architecture. In particular, it refers to the design of deployable domes with articulated straight bars, starting from the transformation of the icosahedron using deployable hexagonal modules. Using visual programming algorithms using Rhinoceros + Grasshopper, geometric optimization results are achieved with deployable hexagonal modules applied to different dome frequencies. The system offers efficient solutions to temporary shelters, portable greenhouses, scenarios for medium and large-scale events, and everything related to light and transformable architecture.

summary The role of the architect is quite literally one of assembly: synthesizing the various parts of a project into a cohesive whole. It is a difficult job, often requiring the architect to weave many seemingly contradictory concerns into a solution that benefits them all. It is not surprising then, that the many elegant and effective systems found in nature should be inspiring to the architect. Emerging fields like biomimicry and systems dynamics model the patterns of interaction between organisms and their environments in terms of dynamic part to part and part to whole relationships. ¶ Observations of real relationships between organisms and their environments, as they exist in nature, reveal complex feedback loops working across multiple scales. These feedback loops operate by the simultaneous action of two observed phenomena. The first is the classic phenotypic relationship seen when organisms of the same genetic makeup instantiate differently based upon differences in their environment. This is the relationship that was originally proposed by Charles Darwin in his theory of natural selection of 1859. Darwin’s model is unidirectional: the organism adapts to its environment, but not the other way around. It operates at the local scale as individual parts react to the conditions of the whole. (Canguilhem, 1952). ¶ The second phenomenon, which sees its effect at the global scale, is the individual’s role as consumer and producer in the flows of energy and material that surround it. It is the subtle and incremental influence of the organism upon its environment, the results of which are often invisible until they reach a catastrophic threshold, at which point all organisms in the system feel global changes. ; The research presented in this paper addresses the dialectic between organism and environment as each responds reciprocally to the others’ changing state. Such feedback loops act in a non-linear fashion, across nested scales in biological systems. They can be modeled to act that way in a digital design process as well. This research is an exploration into one such model and its application to architecture: the simple communication between organisms as they affect and are affected by their environments through the use of signal chemicals.

summary This paper illustrates a fabrication methodology through which the inherent form of large non-linear timber components was exploited in the Wood Chip Barn project by the students of Design + Make at the Architectural Association’s Hooke Park campus. Twenty distinct Y-shaped forks are employed with minimal machining in the construction of a structural truss for the building. Through this workflow, low-value branched sections of trees are transformed into complex and valuable building components using non-standard technologies. Computational techniques, including parametric algorithms and robotic fabrication methods, were used for execution of the project. The paper addresses the various challenges encountered while processing irregular material, as well as limitations of the robotic tools. Custom algorithms, codes, and post-processors were developed and integrated with existing software packages to compensate for drawbacks of industrial and parametric platforms. The project demonstrates and proves a new methodology for working with complex, large geometries which still results in a low cost, time- and quality-efficient process.

summary his thesis concerns a new generation process for shape configurations using a set of operations. The approach derives from analyzing a particular design style and programming them into a computer. It discusses how generative CAD software can be developed that embodies a style and how this software can serve in the architectural design process as a computational design tool. The thesis proposes a prototype software system, ArchiDNA, to demonstrate the use of operations to generate drawings in a specific design style. ArchiDNA employs a set of operations to produce design drawings of shape configuration in Peter Eisenman's style for the Biocentrum building plan in Frankfurt, Germany. The principles of form generation are defined as a set of operations. ArchiDNA generates 2D and 3D drawings similar to Eisenmans plan and model for the Biocentrum building. The extension system of ArchiDNA, called ArchiDNA++, supports designers in defining operations and generating shape configurations. Designers can enter and edit their own shapes for the generation process and also control the parameters and attributes for shape operations. Thus, designers can manage the generation process and explore using ArchiDNA++, to generate shape configurations that are consistent with their own drawing style.

summary This project presents computational design and fabrication methods for locating standard steel reinforcement within 3D printed water-soluble PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) molds to create non-standard concrete columns. Previous methods from “Melting: Augmenting Concrete Columns with Water Soluble 3D Printed Formwork” and “Dissolvable 3D Printed Formwork: Exploring Additive Manufacturing for Reinforced Concrete” (Doyle & Hunt 2019) were adapted for larger-scale construction, including the introduction of new hardware, development of custom programming strategies, and updated digital fabrication techniques. Initial research plans included 3D printing continuous PVA formwork with a KUKA Agilus Kr10 R1100 industrial robotic arm. However, COVID-19 university campus closures led to fabrication shifting to the author’s home, and this phase instead relied upon a LulzBot TAZ 6 (build volume of 280 mm x 280 mm x 250 mm) with an HS+ (Hardened Steel) tool head (1.2 mm nozzle diameter). Two methods were developed for this project phase: new 3D printing hardware and custom GCode production. The methods were then evaluated in the fabrication of three non-standard columns designed around five standard reinforcement bars (3/8-inch diameter): Woven, Twisted, Aperture. Each test column was eight inches in diameter (the same size as a standard Sonotube concrete form) and 4 feet tall, approximately half the height of an architecturally scaled 8-foot-tall column. Each column’s form was generated from combining these diameter and height restrictions with the constraints of standard reinforcement placement and minimum concrete coverage. The formwork was then printed, assembled, cast, and then submerged in water to dissolve the molds to reveal the cast concrete. This mold dissolving process limits the applicable scale for the work as it transitions from the research lab to the construction site. Therefore, the final column was placed outside with its mold intact to explore if humidity and water alone can dissolve the PVA formwork in lieu of submersion.

summary Pixel-planes is a logic-enhanced memory system for raster graphics and imaging. Although each pixel-memory is enhanced with a one-bit ALU, the system's real power comes from a tree of one-bit address that can evaluate linear expressions Ax + By + C for every pixel (x,y) simultaneously, as fast as the ALUs and the memory circuits can accept the results. The development of a variety of algorithms that exploit this fast linear expression evaluation capability has started. The paper reports some of those results. Illustrated in this paper is a sample image from a small working prototype of the Pixel- planes hardware and a variety of images from simulations of a full-scale system. Timing estimates indicate that 30,000 smooth shaded triangles can be generated per second, or 21, 000 smooth-shaded and shadowed triangles can be generated per second, or over 25,000 shaded spheres can be generated per second. Image-enhancement by adaptive histogram equalization can be performed within 4 seconds on a 512 x 512 image

summary With the increasing applications of computational methods in the field of design optimization, intelligent metaheuristic algorithms are playing a more important role in building performance optimization. To enable the integration of optimization algorithms with Building Information Modeling (BIM), this research implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm on Revit + Dynamo, which is a parametric BIM platform. A MultiObjective PSO (MOPSO) Solver has been developed in Dynamo using MATLAB and C# programming languages. The methodology of the research and the validation studies are presented in the paper. The validation studies prove the effectiveness of the MOPSO Solver for both standard optimization test functions and an optimization example of a simplified building design.

summary New lighting technologies may fulfill a need for holistic design methods by offering opportunities for both architects and engineers to apply methods and knowledge from media technology that combine daylight and interactive light, in order to complement and deepen an understanding of context. The framework combines daylight and interactive light and includes human needs analysis, spatial understanding, qualitative analysis, qualitative tests and visual assessments. summary With the development of information technology, the ideas of programming and mass calculation were introduced into the design field, resulting in the growth of computer- aided design. With the idea of designing by data, we began to manipulate data directly, and interpret data through design works. Machine Learning as a decision making tool has been widely used in many fields. It can be used to analyze large amounts of data and predict future changes. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is a model framework in machine learning. It’s specially designed to learn and generate output data with similar or identical characteristics. Pix2pixHD is a modified version of GAN that learns image data in pairs and generates new images based on the input. The author applied pix2pixHD in recognizing and generating architectural drawings, marking rooms with different colors and then generating apartment plans through two convolutional neural networks. Next, in order to understand how these networks work, the author analyzed their framework, and provided an explanation of the three working principles of the networks, convolution layer, residual network layer and deconvolution layer. Lastly, in order to visualize the networks in architectural drawings, the author derived data from different layer and different training epochs, and visualized the findings as gray scale images. It was found that the features of the architectural plan drawings have been gradually learned and stored as parameters in the networks. As the networks get deeper and the training epoch increases, the features in the graph become more concise and clearer. This phenomenon may be inspiring in understanding the designing behavior of humans.

summary Can architectural design be automated? The development of CAAD tools led to the point where this question can be relevant. To prove that some branches of architectural design can be automatized to a substantial extent we aimed at building a digital tool able to perform automated preliminary design of residential building in the typology of a point block (tower). The algorithmic process was split into three consecutive stages corresponding to the traditional design method: massing, floorplans layouts and apartments design. The workflow is linear, with some form of feedback-loop-driven optimization. The result of the study is an algorithmic tool in the Rhino + Grasshopper environment automatically proposing a point block of optimal size, position and orientation on a given plot, dividing the floorplans into flats of optimal size structure and solving the flat layouts. The system proved to be working on different plots where the existing buildings were used as a reference for performance evaluation.

title Performance comparison analysis of 3D reconstruction modeling software in construction site visualization and mapping

summary Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has overcome the limitations of conventional construction management methods using advanced and automated visualization and 3D reconstruction modeling techniques. Although the mapping techniques and reconstruction modeling software can generate real-time and high-resolution descriptive textural, physical, and spatial data, they may fail to develop an accurate and complete 3D model of the construction site. To generate a quality 3D reconstruction model, the construction manager must optimize the trade-offs among three major software-selection factors: functionalities, technical capabilities, and the system hardware specifications. These factors directly affect the robust 3D reconstruction model of the construction site and objects. Accordingly, the purpose of this research was to apply nine well-established 3D reconstruction modeling software tools (DroneDeploy, COLMAP, 3DF+Zephyr, Autodesk Recap, LiMapper, PhotoModeler, 3D Survey, AgiSoft Photoscan, and Pix4D Mapper) and compare their performances and reliabilities in generating complete 3D models. The research was conducted in an eco-home building at the University of Technology, Malaysia. A series of regression analyses were conducted to compare the performances of the selected 3D reconstruction modeling software in alignment and registration, distance computing, geometric measurement, and plugin execution. Regression analysis determined that among the software programs, LiMapper had the strongest positive linear correlation with the ground truth model. Furthermore, the correlation analysis showed a statistically significant p-value for all software, except for 3D Survey. In addition, the research found that Autodesk Recap generated the most-robust and highest-quality dense point clouds. DroneDeploy can create an accurate point cloud and triangulation without using many points as required by COLMAP and LiMapper. It was concluded that most of the software is robustly, positively, and linearly correlated with the corresponding ground truth model. In the future, other factors involving software selection should be studied, such as vendor-related, user-related, and automation factors.

summary This paper describes an adaptive decision-making design framework for investigating the synergies between aesthetically-driven and performance-driven criteria, specifically in designing the material behaviour of an electroresponsive building envelope system. An immersive and interactive simulation environment developed in the C++ programming language provides a computational tool for testing the visual and energetic performance of a dynamic building envelope as it negotiates bioclimatic energy flows with participants’ aesthetic preferences and interactions. Experiments in bioresponsive feedback loops examine the impacts that user engagement and real-time energy performance feedback have on participants’ design choices. Preliminary results demonstrate that exposure to energy performance feedback and to the collective design choices of multiple users leads to adaptive decision-making that favours synergistic system performance with the potential for increased socio-ecological connections. Critically, this research provides new methods for supporting the design of emerging material behaviours for dynamic building envelopes that can negotiate multiple performance criteria.

summary From the recent advent of scripting tools integrated into commercial CAAD software and everyday design practice, the use of programming applied to an architectural design process becomes a necessary field of study. The presented research explores the use of programming as explorative and reflexive medium (Schön, 1983) through the development of a programming framework for architectural design. Based on Java, the ANAR+ library is a parametric geometry environment meant to be used as programming interface by designers. Form exploration strategies based on parametric variations depend on the internal logic description, a key role for form generation. In most commercial CAD software, geometric data structures are often predefined objects, thus constraining the form exploration, whereas digital architectural research and teaching are in need for an encompassing tool able to step beyond new software products limitations.
