summary This paper tackles the problem of the functional and morphological definition of elementary spaces (in relation to the overall definition of the building object) through the study and the modelization of the designer's knowledge and of the cognitive processes which use it. An interactive automatic system which solves the problem of the placing of objects within a predefined environment is then described. This is the first element in a more general system which is meant as an intelligent aid to building design.

summary A number of architectural design studios (second, third and fifth year) at the School of Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have undertaken traditional design problems through the use of IBM-AT microcomputer based CAD/Graphics systems. Utilizing three-dimensional modeling software, color graphics "paint" software, and animation software, the studios integrated the use of computers into the very heart of the core program as the primary means of design, simulation, and evaluation. At the same time, other non-computer based studios engaged in similar (and often identical) design problems. Therefore, the opportunity became available to compare and evaluate both the impact the computer made to the traditional architectural studio and also to the building design itself.

Work by the authors and Filez Ozel with their students at the New Jersey School of Architecture has integrated microcomputer graphics into the school's mainstream design curriculum. The mechanical means have been two aging off the shelf software system- one that first creates wire-frame models and another that 'paints' them to create solids, as well as draw in a more freehand fashion. However the models were achieved, the results point to profound changes in the way that future architects can view the design process

summary This paper compares the musical and architectural languages exploring the similarities between works related to Twelve-tone music and Descontruction. To do this, first looks at Opus 27 by Anton Webern whose goal was to explore the spatiality in the context of sound perception by using a topology based on a square matrix of twelve rows and columns. Next, compares these procedures to those adopted by Peter Eisenman to design the conceptual model Guardiola House (1988), demonstrating the affinity between spatial and temporal constructions in the works of these two authors.

summary From the view of concepts related to emotions and feelings treated in the field of cognitive - behavioral neuroscience and its relation with the teaching-learning processes, this paper searches to analyze educational strategies that can contribute to the field of emergency synchronous remote teaching architectural design. Methodologically, the bibliographical research of exploratory nature is related to an experience of investigation about pedagogical methods of teaching architectural design in a postgraduate course, developed, in the second semester of 2020, during the period of emergency synchronous remote teaching due to the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus.We seek to comprehend the benefits and limits of remote emergency teaching practices of architectural design, looking at factors such as emotions and feelings as important mediation tools on teaching-learning processes.

summary This paper intents to bring into the technology field a debate regarding gender perspective. We analyze the professional qualifications and trajectories of three women who have distinct experiences and functions working with digital fabrication at two Brazilian universities' laboratories. The semi-structured interviews were executed remotely along with data collection over the internet. In the analysis is debated the protagonism of these professionals inside the laboratories, the role they play in the dissemination of this technology and on the reproduction of technological knowledge among women around different regions of Brazil.

summary This work is developed in the framework of urban design where we try to understand, to characterize then to qualify the environmental quality of urban open spaces along pedestrian walkways. So, we propose an analysis and a classification method applied to pedestrian walkways, taking into account their environmental characteristics. Analysis method is based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in which we exploit the detailed version of the signal representing the evolution of a physical factor of environment along the walkway. This method leads to a segmentation of the signal. Then, a classification technique called Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) is performed to identify classes of walkways in terms of environmental features.

summary VENTS 2.0 is a responsive environment that relates the moving air at separate locations using real-time data transmission. Functioning as an exhibition installation, a kinetic canopy produces a “rain” of air puffs subtly felt on the skin with a visual pattern of color LED, translating environmental conditions elsewhere into visual, audial, and tactile experiences within the Wurster Gallery at the University of California at Berkeley. The project articulates forms of airflow as part of a dynamic spatial device that stimulates senses beyond sight in a contemporary exhibition setting. It establishes an active system that triggers the emergence of initial states of air and modulates its evolvement. The installation collects real-time and recorded wind velocities via weather API (Application Programmer Interface). The computed data input controls multisensorial effects output by an array of air chambers using a customized script running on a Raspberry Pi. Each chamber generates air vortex rings one can feel when collapsing onto the skin, a typological form of airflow widely used in both art installations and the gaming industry due to its visual and tactile properties. These puffs of air, produced asynchronously, are distributed across the space by a total of twenty-four pairs of chambers assembled onto modified umbrellas on a lightweight aluminum frame. Undulating along the central axis of the 2,200 square feet gallery, the canopy locates right above average human height, illuminating softly a series of projects on display underneath, while at the same time providing visitors unexpected encounters with the constructed “breezes,” the echoing sound, and the fluctuating light.

summary This article summarizes the history of the standardization efforts in the architectural, engineering and construction industry and focuses on the three phases of the life cycle of a building, namely design, construction and use phases. Data and information needs of each phase tends to be quite different than one another, thus leading to difficulty in seamless exchange and integration between different constituents of the AEC industry. Downstream data users expect the architect to generate digital design information that is usable in the construction and use phases of a building.s life cycle. Recently American Institute of Architects have assembled a congress in Washington DC, bringing together representatives from the AEC/FM industry, government agencies, software industry and academic institutions. This paper is a summary of the presentation this author gave at this congress in April, 2004.

summary Digital fabrication makes it possible to create precise and replicable components from engineered timber products. Coupled with strategic design, these tools can be leveraged to produce intelligent and informed jointing conditions that facilitate material arrangements of unprecedented efficiency and strength. This project builds on an existing body of knowledge in the field of digital wood design and fabrication to examine the design, fabrication and structural capabilities of massively modulated plywood space frames. The practice based research finds that while the geometry of a timber space frame is of excellent strength the detailing of joints and overall structural rigidity is a key concern.

summary Generative design, which integrates multidisciplinary types of expertise in unconventional ways, was reserved just until recently to experienced and highly autodidactic designers. However, growing recognition of the importance of generative design methodologies have resulted in a need to introduce theories and applications of generative design to undergraduate students as part of their design studies. This emerging educational field of generative design teaching currently lacks methodologies, teaching experience and introductory study material. Available textbooks related to algorithmic form generation, discussing algorithmic growth, artificial life, fi-actal images, emergent behaviour and the like have originated in the field of mathematics. This resource provides an abundance of examples and generative approaches but when adapted to design education, it poses great interdisciplinary challenges which are addressed in this paper. Experiences in generative design teaching are presented, focusing on the relation between algorithmic reproduction of nature (as emphasized by authors in the mathematical field) and innovation (as commonly emphasized in design education). This discussion leads to a derivation of pedagogic suggestions as early steps on the way towards theories and curricula of generative design teaching, addressed to curriculum planners, generative design teachers as well as novices of the field such as undergraduate students.

summary In this paper, we present a procedure to derive algebraic parameters from geometrically described truncated hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces. The procedure uses parametric modelling and optimisation to converge on close algebraic approximations of hyperbolic paraboloid geometry through a successive breakdown of vast search spaces. We illustrate this procedure with its application to the surfaces of the 1958 Philips Pavilion designed by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis. This application yielded previously unavailable parametric data of this building in algebraic form. It highlights the power of the parametric design and optimisation toolkit, both in terms of automated search and epistemological enablement.

summary Much design research, including much research in the computer-aided architectural design field, is based on the assumption that the process of designing is observable and that what happens in designing can be known, explicitly described and shared. In this paper I examine this assumption from my subjective viewpoint and conclude that designing occurs behind a blind spot. It can be concluded that existing design process models used in the “science of design” are based on invention rather than on empirical evidence, which in turn suggests that science should be studied as a form of design instead of studying designing scientifically.

summary This research project is based on the research results from the "Acoustic Visualization Group" of Digital FUTURES Summer Workshop in Shanghai, 2018. In this workshop, students use sound data acquisition sound collection equipment to collect sound information in the space and transform it into digital data. After analyzing the data, they present it as a visible form and design the sound interaction device based on the results. This study combines the media art and digital technology to transform the invisible acoustics digital information into a tangibly visible experiencing space and to mix the virtual acoustics space, realistic light- and- shadow space and the three-dimension material space in multi-dimensions through the digital programming and generative art design. Acoustic visualization interaction design is a comprehensive attempt which mixed with several research fields such as architecture device design, digital media technology, human-computer interaction and architecture environment science.

title Mismatched Metaphor: User vs. System Model in Computer-Aided Drafting

summary We report findings from an extensive study of the users of a Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) system. Our observations suggest that the CAD system is used inefficiently, because users approach computer_aided drafting from a T-square metaphor reflecting their past experience with traditional drawing media. This prevents them from discovering and using effectively powerful system commands that have no equivalent in manual techniques. These findings suggest that we should rethink the ways in which CAD users are trained and manuals are written, and that we introduce CAD users to a more strategic use of CAD, particularly to a Detail/Aggregate/Manipulate (DAM) strategy that takes advantage of the compositional logic underlying a design.
