title Strategies for CAD
source Eurographics '87. 1987. (16) p. : ill. includes bibliography
summary Assumptions for CAD are discussed, pointing to a distinction between human knowledge and machine representations of knowledge. Implications for future useful CAD systems are considered. A strategy for 'mechanistic' symbol processors is presented, employing 'mechanisms' of formal logic to manipulate written and drawn expressions of designers' knowledge

title Visual Emergence in Creative Collaboration
source Architectural Computing from Turing to 2000 [eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-5-7] Liverpool (UK) 15-17 September 1999, pp. 357-363
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1999.357
summary A conceptual framework to support creative collaboration in a Web-based design environment is proposed and discussed. We demonstrated this approach in our work on visual emergence. First, our model of visual emergence of design schema is presented. Following, a conceptual framework to support this model in CAAD environment is developed and introduced. Finally, a web-based computational environment is presented. One that may support visual emergence as part of a creative collaboration process.

title Further developments on light simulation.
source Architectural and Urban Simulation Techniques in Research and Education [3rd EAEA-Conference Proceedings]
summary Endoscopy or computer simulation? A light simulation was conducted by students on a building at night-time in Stuttgart using an endoscope as well as a computer. Findings are presented and true-to-life distribution of light in models is evaluated.

source ACADIA Quarterly, vol. 19, no. 4, pp. 28-29

summary Most of us (CAD loving architects) are thrill seekers. Though we ground ourselves in history, traditions and legacy, we also embrace novelties, high tech elixirs and liquid crystal. We love forward thinking juxtaposition and contrasts of ideas. As a matter of fact, we get bored when everything is understood and predictable. It is all about brain chemistry.

title Designing: Rules, types and worlds
source Design Studies, Volume 9, Number 3, 1988, pp. 24-38
summary Protocols of seven practised designers, all undertaking a common design exercise, have been analysed for patterns of reasoning and use of design rules. Patterns of reasoning were found to be shared among designers and not significantly different from reasoning in everyday life. Rules were largely implicit, overlapping, diverse, variously applied, contextually dependent, subject to exceptions and to critical modification. It is argued that rules are derived from underlying types - functional building types, references, spatial gestalts and experiential archetypes - that serve as `holding environments' for design knowledge.

title Shape Based Reminding as an Aid to Creative Design
source Sixth International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures [ISBN 9971-62-423-0] Singapore, 24-26 September 1995, pp. 79-89
summary This paper describes "Drawing Analogies", a shape based reminding program that uses freehand sketches to index and retrieve visual references for creative designing. Architects often employ reference images from books, magazines, and other visual collections to find forms they can adopt and adapt into their designs. We give examples of how designers use drawing and analogies and describe our approach to finding similar drawings. We argue that a graphical reminding scheme based on sketching can help designers find interesting references from various domains.
