title Elemental Motion in Spatial Interaction (EMSI): A Framework for Understanding Space through Movement and Computer Vision
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2022.1.505
source Jeroen van Ameijde, Nicole Gardner, Kyung Hoon Hyun, Dan Luo, Urvi Sheth (eds.), POST-CARBON - Proceedings of the 27th CAADRIA Conference, Sydney, 9-15 April 2022, pp. 505-514
summary Spatial analysis and evaluation are becoming increasingly common as new technologies enable users, designers, and researchers to study spatial motion patterns without relying on manual notations for observations. While ideas related to motion and space have been studied in other fields such as industrial engineering, choreography, and computer science, the understanding of efficiency and quality in architectural spaces through motion has not been widely explored. This research applies techniques in computer vision to analyse human body motion in architectural spaces as a measure of experience and engagement. A taxonomy framework is proposed to categorize human motion components relevant to spatial interactions, for analysis through computer vision. A technical case study developed upon a machine-learning-aided model is used to test a selection of the proposed framework within domestic kitchen environments. This contribution adds further perspective to wider research explorations in the quality, inclusivity, engagement, and efficiency of architectural spaces through computer-aided tools.

title A Large Scale 3D Printing Method for Skeletonized Surfaces Based on Graph Theory
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2023.2.221
source Immanuel Koh, Dagmar Reinhardt, Mohammed Makki, Mona Khakhar, Nic Bao (eds.), HUMAN-CENTRIC - Proceedings of the 28th CAADRIA Conference, Ahmedabad, 18-24 March 2023, pp. 221–230
summary For large-scale Additive manufacturing, while manufacturing thin nonplanar components by printing contours, the printing direction is often perpendicular to the surface, so the components cannot have complex topological features. At the same time, large-scale additive manufacturing is difficult to achieve skeletonized patterns due to the nozzle size and material limitations. Most of the existing printing methods for skeletonized structure use the level set method, which is difficult to adapt to thin shells. This paper introduces a new printing method for 3D printing skeletonized surfaces. The method uses a graph-theoretic approach to plan the printing path, combining the size of the nozzle and the structure of the surface, to enable the printing of surfaces with complex topological features. A 3D printing case is used to verify and prove the practicality of the method. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively solve the problem of printing skeletonized hyperbolic shells and can achieve a continuous printing path. However, there is still room for improvement in many areas of the method to improve print quality.

title Robotic weaving of customizable FRP formworks for large-scale optimized structure
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2021.1.573
source A. Globa, J. van Ameijde, A. Fingrut, N. Kim, T.T.S. Lo (eds.), PROJECTIONS - Proceedings of the 26th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Online, Hong Kong, 29 March - 1 April 2021, pp. 573-582
summary This research presents a novel method of robotic fabrication for customizable fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubular formworks, which also function as reinforcements for large-scale structural components. This process is achieved by the spatial weaving of FRP fabric driven by a robotic arm, and calibrated with the fast-cure resin which is applied on the fabric and cures during the weaving process so the fabricated structure is self-supporting and the structure is formed in an additive manner. With this method, structural members with changing sections can be customized and fabricated rapidly with off-the-shelf materials, following a system of structural reinforcement that has been widely adopted in the construction industry and promotes new applications of construction robotics.

title Constructing the String Wall - Mapping the Material Process
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2006.326
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 326-335
summary The String Wall is the emergent product of a study on technological applications in architecture. Our team attempted to test the limits of the common partition wall construction, challenging the standard notion of the partition screen wall that recedes behind the structures, spaces and objects as a background condition. Such vibrant a partition as the SW becomes the center to the formation of the space it defines. The story of the SW could be described as the organic combination of the bow and the twist. The latent materiality and geometry of the bow and the twist as composite systems that are mined for their structural, tectonic and programmatic potential are tested prior to final construction by 3D printed scaled models. The SW is composed of successive frames that consist of vertical twisted strips of plywood attached to wooden beams. These frames emulate the stud elements of the conventional dry wall partition systems and are manufactured entirely manually. On the other hand, the use of CNC milling machine is employed for the production of the bowed plywood strips that fill in the frame. Three fluctuated curvatures produce strips that are combined rhythmically to produce the striated effect of the SW. The material is manipulated in order to expose its hidden side, the sequence of the multiple layers of the different infilling conditions. The oblique perspective of the SW is achieved through a novel geometric transparency, thus offering constantly changing views to a moving observer. The manipulation of the position of the component bowed and twisted strips explore the application of a see-through condition that escapes the norm and reveals the back to the front in a unique whole. The void of the screen wall becomes ultimately programmatic through the use of light. A sequence of halogen lights situated at the top and bottom of the in-between the wooden strips void create the dumbfounded effect of the SW experience.

title Comparative Analysis of Open-Source and Commercial Photogrammetry Software for Cultural Heritage
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2021.2.243

summary Recently, photogrammetry has become a relatively easy and low-cost method for cultural heritage 3D reconstruction. Plenty of free and open-source photogrammetry programs have been developed, but not all of them provide an adequate solution for the 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage. In this research, an overview of the state-of-the-art open-source photogrammetry programs was done. In order to investigate whether among the open-source software packages there is an adequate alternative to the commercial software for the purpose of cultural heritage 3D reconstruction, the open-source software - AliceVision Meshroom was compared to the most commonly used commercial software Agisoft Metashape. The programs were compared on the examples of cultural heritage objects and according to the predefined criteria that are important for achieving detailed and accurate 3D reconstruction. The results of testing and comparing the 3D reconstructions obtained using Meshroom and Metashape were illustrated and explained through two case studies of antic objects of cultural heritage, characterized by similar materialization, but different geometric shapes.

summary There is a strong relation between playful learning and the environment children inhabit. An environment can easily turn into a medium for play while its patterns and children's interactions with these patterns can turn into experiences of learning. Developed upon findings from an analog pilot study and built with an open source electronic platform and piezoelectric sensors, our prototype translates children's physical actions into responses of an interactive device. Experiments with children using the prototype support, in part, a unifying approach to designing playful learning environments embedded with tangible spatial interaction.

title Section Grammars: An Experimental Study on Decoding Forms of Underground Cities
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 1157–1168
summary This study offers two key contributions. Firstly, it introduces the concept and framework of "section grammars" (SecG), which is derived from Stiny's shape grammars. Secondly, it investigates the potential of SecG in generating existing and alternative section layouts for ancient underground cities. The case study focuses on Derinkuyu, which is located in Cappadocia, Turkey. The study thoroughly examines the components of the Derinkuyu underground city, presents its parameters, and explains the rules based on the relations between these components. The study employs these elements and rules to generate an existing satellite city as well as a new synthetic satellite city. Finally, the paper discusses the outcomes of implementing the SecG framework. This study contributes to shape grammar studies by integrating the subtractive (carving) approach and the topological relations observed in underground cities into the proposed framework.

title The problem in Studio Teaching – Revisiting the Pedagogy of Studio Teaching
source Architectural Education for the Asian Century, Proceedings of the 1st ACAE Conference on Architectural Education, Milton Tan, editor, Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture, National University of Singapore, pp. 95-105
summary Studio teaching is well established as a process. It is often said that problem-based learning (PBL) is a late extension of our tradition of studio teaching into other disciplines. A re-examination of studio teaching against the practices of problem-based learning however reveals that important opportunities for learning are omitted in the studio setting.

title Computer aided descriptive geometry
source Vienna University of Technology
summary The main aim of this thesis is the creation of a software package for descriptive geometry. Why there is a need for such a descriptive geometry software? In descriptive geometry the ability of space perception is trained by solving spatial problems graphically with the use of a few constructions: Hence the solution of each problem consists of two parts: 1) 3D-part: After analyzing the spatial problem it is cleared how to proceed step by step in space. 2) 2D-part: Due to the basic rules of descriptive geometry for each step of the solving strategy the corresponding 2D-construction has to be carried out graphically. By use of CAD-DG the 2nd part can be replaced again by a 3D-part: Each step is solved using the basic routines offered in the menu. That means that each step is solved analytically but instead of any output of numbers the solution is immediately displayed in the main views on the screen. Therefore the user neither needs to apply formulas of analytic geometry nor has to take care of any coordinates. He still works directly with geometric objects in a graphic representation
