title The cybernetic imagination of computational architecture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 14 - no. 1, 16-29
summary Since the publication in 1948 of Norbert Wiener’s Cybernetics, this thought model has exerted a profound influence in contemporary knowledge. Such influence has been decisive for a paradigm shift in the profession of architecture and particularly for the rise of a computational perspective in architectural design. This article explores the link between the cybernetic paradigm and the conception of architectural objects as performative, responsive, intelligent, and sentient artifacts—the visions of buildings that have been central to the development of digital architecture since its early stages. This connection shows that the dominant visions of design problems associated with the development of a computational perspective in architecture have not been exclusively the result of the introduction of computer pragmatics in architectural design. On the contrary, following such scholars as Bruno Latour and Katherine Hayles, these developments must be considered as the result of a particular feedback process that includes technical aspects as well as the definition of design problems around an informational ontology and epistemology. The understanding of the intellectual foundations of digital architecture is crucial not only to promote a critical regard of its productions but to imagine scenarios for a viable cybernetic practice of computer-mediated architectural design.

title Urbanization Projects for the Santo Antônio Hill recreated by Digital Simulation
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 855–864
summary This work is part of master's research that has as main objective to analyze the plans referring to the Santo Antônio Hill, elaborated in the 20th century. For that moment, a pilot test was conducted with the Urban Plan of Affonso Reidy (1948). The proposal is to analyze the plans through the historical-interpretative method that investigates immersion as a guiding concept. It is intended to elaborate a three-dimensional model that combined with the use of digital simulation allows a first-person experience, in a pedestrian point of view, inserted in these city proposals. The work seeks to encourage discussions about the use of digital simulation for experimenting with elaborated but not built projects, seeking to complement the traditional ways of analysis and comparison.

title Parameters in the Design Process

summary “Ce n’est point le navire qui naît de la forge des clous et du sciage des planches. C’est la forge des clous et du sciage des planches qui naissent de la pente vers la mer et croissance du navire” (Saint-Exupéry, 1948). The paper describes and analyses a course held at Stuttgart University, Germany dealing with the application of parameters in an architectural design process and the transformation of this process into a relational digital model. The course is introduced with special emphasis on its tasks, aims and the implicit didactic concept. It is also investigated if and how a design approach resulting from the identification and determination of parameters can lead to a creation of a unique shape. Finally the impact of the practical exercises for the final design is evaluated. The course’s structure is enhanced by the “Vorklasse” from Bauhaus and the conviction that using software is taught most effectively by working on an own specific project. At the very beginning the students get the chance to gain experiences with parameters through preliminary practical exercises, like folding and modelling and analysing. Then the use of the software is taught in several compact sessions in parallel to the design process. The impact of the early practical exercises on the subsequent design process is remarkable. Special attention is therefore given to this aspect. The aim of the lessons is to produce a proposal for the design task. The proposal is then to be presented as a parametric model representing either the global shape or a constructive detail.
