summary A UIMS developed at the University of Toronto is presented. The system has two main components. The first is a set of tools to support the design and implementation of interactive graphics programs. The second is a run-time support package which handles interactions between the system and the user (things such as hit detection, event detection, screen updates, and procedure invocation), and provides facilities for logging user interactions for later protocol analysis. The design / implementation tool is a preprocessor, called MENULAY, which permits the applications programmer to use interactive graphics techniques to design graphics menus and their functionality. The output of this preprocessor is high- level code which can be compiled with application-specific routines. User interactions with the resulting executable module are then handled by the run-time support package. The presentation works through an example from design to execution in a step-by-step manner

summary This article briefly describes the mathematical techniques underlying surface and volume modeling techniques in current practice. The first part outlines what might be termed an operator calculus for the approximation and interpolation of functions of more than one independent variable. This operator calculus uses operator multiplication and Boolean addition to compound the linear operators associated with simple bivariate and multivariate interpolation/approximation schemes. The result is a distributive lattice of approximation operators. The other two sections of the article contain specific examples of how this operator calculus leads to practical techniques for sculptured surface and volume modeling

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. title Using Formal Specifications in the Design of a Human-Computer Interface

summary Formal specification techniques are valuable in software development because they permit a designer to describe the external behavior of a system precisely without specifying its internal implementation. Although formal specifications have been applied to many areas of software systems, they have not been widely used for specifying user interfaces. In the Military Message System project at the Naval Research Laboratory, the user interfaces as well as the other components of a family of message systems are specified formally, and prototypes are then implemented from the specifications. This paper illustrates the specification of the user interface module for the family of message systems. It then surveys specification techniques that can be applied to human-computer interfaces and divides the techniques into two categories: those based on state transition diagrams and those based on BNF. Examples of both types of specifications are given. Specification notations based on state transition diagrams are preferable to those based on BNF because the former capture the surface structure of the user interface more perspicuously. In either notation, high-level abstraction for describing the semantics of the user interface is needed, and an application-specific one is used here

summary We present new algorithms for efficient ray tracing of three procedurally defined objects: fractal surfaces, prisms, and surfaces of revolution. The fractal surface algorithm performs recursive subdi- vision adaptively. Subsurfaces which cannot intersect a given ray are culled from further consideration. The prism algorithm transforms the three-dimensional ray-surface intersection problem into a two-dimensional ray-curve intersection problem, which is solved by the method of strip trees. The surface- of-revolution algorithm transforms the three-dimensional ray-surface intersection problem into a two-dimensional curve-curve intersection problem, which again is solved by strip trees.

summary (This is one of the two standard algorithms for clipping. The other is the Sutherland-Hodgman reentrant algorithm). The process of polygon clipping is analyzed and the understanding gained thereby forms the foundation of a very direct algorithm. Each edge of the input polygon is considered to be a vector and is then extended to be a line of infinite extent. The boundary line segments of the clip window are extended in a similar fashion to become boundary lines. The intersection points of an extended edge with the boundary lines are identified as entry or exit points. It is observed that these entry and exit points can be used to characterize the visibility status of the edge. Not only might the edge have a visible segment, but it can also induce the inclusion in the output polygon of a vertex at a corner of the clip window called a turning vertex. To quantify the visibility conditions, the edge is written in parametric form. The possible contributions (including nil) that can be provided to the output polygon by a particular edge are established. This analysis is then embedded in an algorithm. An arbitrary example input polygon is given and the output of the algorithm is shown. The execution time for this example using this algorithm is measured to be half of what is required by the standard Sutherland-Hodgman reentrant polygon clipping algorithm

Nelson Max presented in Paris the first interactive landscape in 1983. The pioneer of scientific image was Ivan Sutherland, researcher of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Another fundamental reference is Sonia Sheridan that invented a system where the user could modify the original image and visualize the result in real time. In Brazil, as well as in the outside, artists in assembly with scientists, see developing works computacionais with resorts of immersion and interatividade. Like this, in that search of new references, the text presents initially the main concepts about interactive virtual art and analyzes two important expositions: Emoção Art.Ficial 2.0 and Maior ou igual a 4D: computer art interactive. summary This paper describes the results of basic studies on procedures for creating solid models of component geometry from two-dimensional orthographic projections. An interactive graphic program was developed to allow the input of three orthographic views of a component geometry by digitizing from a drawing. The views may contain straight lines and circular arcs, solid or dashed. No restrictions are placed on the order or direction of lines and arcs in any view. Using an extension of the Wesley-Markowski procedure, the program constructs a three-dimensional solid model of the object. When the projections are ambiguous, multiple solid models are produced. The solid model may contain planar, cylindrical, conical, spherical and toroidal surfaces. Topological information of the solid model is sotred in a winged edge sturcture. Geometric information is stored as vertex coordinates and surface equations.

summary UNIGRAFIX is a three-dimensional graphics modeling environment that runs under the UNIX operating system. It comprises a terse, human-readable descriptive language that allows scene files of complex objects to be created with little overhead. These scenes can be used as input to a set of UNIGRAFIX programs which can be run either as separate functional units, or from within the interactive UNIGRAFIX environment. Programs are available to transform and illuminate the scene descriptions and to display them in a variety of styles on various output devices. The built-in hidden-face and hidden-line elimination routines use a scan- line algorithm which makes strong use of scan-line coherence as well as object coherence.
