title Problems of Chronology, Decoration, and Urban Design in the Forum at Pompeii

summary This article offers an archaeological and structural analysis of the four main buildings on the east side of the forum at Pompeii and challenges widely published and generally accepted views about the forum. Major problems of chronology, decoration, and urban design are emphasized through a methodology that rejects the prevalent building-by-building approach to the forum in favor of an approach that allows the significance of the urban ensemble to reveal itself. Connections with Rome in areas of building type, iconography, and design are stressed. A reexamination of the evidence points to a comprehensive post-earthquake (i.e., post-62) plan for the east side of the forum, a design whose hallmarks are the unification and monumentalization of the urban center. These goals were achieved by blocking streets, linking facades, upgrading building materials, and emphasizing the now more prominent northeastern and southeastern entrances. The concomitant economic implications are significant. Rather than being a symbol of the depressed economic conditions at Pompeii after 62, the forum with its vigorous and ambitious post-earthquake building program reveals both a de- sire to rebuild on a grand scale and an ability (with assistance from Rome?) to carry it out.

summary For nearly twenty years Edward Robbins, an anthropologist, has been studying and writing about the system of architectural education and practice in the United States and abroad. In this book he examines the social uses of architectural drawing: how drawing acts to direct both the conception and the production of architecture; how it helps architects set an agenda, define what is important about a design, and communicate with their colleagues and clients; and how it embodies claims about the architect's role, status, and authority. The centerpiece of Robbins's provocative investigation consists of case study narratives based on interviews with nine architects, a developer-architect, and an architectural engineer. The narratives are illustrated by the architects' drawings from projects in Japan, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the United States, from conception through realization. Included are orthographic and axonometric projections, perspectives, elevations, plans, sections, working drawings, sketches, schematics, construction, and finished drawings. summary The design of virtual environments can be approached profitably from the point of view of behavioural science. A review of current applications suggests that an early and continual focus on users-although widely accepted as vital in the design of these applications-is being ignored in favour of a focus on the technology. One example of this can be found in the use of immersion as a defining characteristic of virtual environments: this defining characteristic ignores the tasks that the user may wish to solve. By adopting user performance criteria in the design of virtual environments, we can be sure that the focus is placed on the user and the user's capabilities.

summary The paper describes a preliminary design model for air-conditioning systems (ACS). Using a commercially available drafting tool (AutoCAD) and an ACS design program (HevaSketch) the model attempts to develop a comprehensive solution at an early phase of ACS design. Contextual knowledge (in the form of local building codes and equipment) is made available to the designer through a linked database. output from the model is in the the form of 2D and 3D drawings, parts and material schedules and detailed design calculations.

summary A post-occupancy evaluation is a formal way of finding out whether a recently occupied, remodelled, or built environment is performing, as was intended in its programming or design, and a term which has been developed in the professional field in the United States over the last 20 years. The Scandinavian approach to the same question has emphasised surfacing the values of the users of the work environment as a tool for a more comprehensive approach to space planning and design. A recent case-study of the Taubman Building at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government was aimed at blending the two strategies for evaluation, defined postoccupancy evaluation as a dialogue with the client, as a process to help the client reflect on spatial and technological improvements, or alternate strategies for organisational locations in buildings, and offers an interesting example of a possible future direction for POE's. Sheila Sheridan, Director of Facilities and Services at the Kennedy School, commissioned the case-study, and has been using it result in her daily work. Jacqueline Vischer, who has developed a survey of seven key dimensions of work-place comfort for commercial office buildings throughout eastern North America, and Turid Horgen, who has developed tools for participatory environmental evaluation and programming, widely used in Scandinavia, carried out the study and facilitated the evaluation process. The study is also done in the context of the ongoing research on these issues in the design Inquiry Group at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT, which is involved in a larger program for developing strategies and tools for more effective programming and management of corporate space. This research defines the workplace environment as the interaction between four dimensions: space, technology, organisation and finance. Our approach is to integrate programming and evaluation with organisational planning and organisational transformation.Post occupancy evaluation is seen as a way to inform the client about his organisational culture as he manages the fit between a facility and its uses, and as one of several tools to bridge the frameworks and viewpoints and the many "languages" which are brought into the decision making process of designing the built environment.

summary The introduction of the personal computer in 1982 set forth a revolution that will continue to transform the profession of Architecture. Most architectural practices in America have embraced this revolution realizing the potentials of the computer. However, education seems to have been slower accepting the potentials and challenges of computers. Computer technology will change the design studio setting and therefore the fundamental way architects are educated. The Department of Architecture at Kansas State University has made a commitment to move toward a computer based design studio. In the fall of 1990, discussions began among the faculty to search for the placement of a computer studio within the five year program. Curriculum, staffing, and funding were issues that had to be overcome to make this commitment work. The strategy that was adopted involved placing the computer studio at the fourth year level in phase one. Phase two will progress as more staff are trained on the computer and course work was adapted to accommodate other year levels for a computer based design studios. Funding was a major obstacle. The decision was made to move from a position of being the primary suppliers of computing technology to one of support for student purchased computers. This strategy alleviated the department from maintaining and upgrading the technology. There was great enthusiasm and support from the faculty as a whole for the use of computers in the studio setting. However, the pedagogical impacts of such a change are just beginning to be realized.

summary Architectural Courseware is an interactive system which allows for the creative access of a courserelated multimedia database and the interactive manipulation of that database to enhance design education. This project began as a Teaching Initiative Project supported by the Division of Undergraduate Studies of North Carolina State University, Dr. James Anderson, Dean, and has evolved over two phases. Phase One produced an interactive prototype that explored the requirements and technology of multimedia as a support tool for undergraduate education, specifically for an architecture course in the School of Design, The History of Contemporary Architecture. Phase One was well received by various members of the North Carolina State University: faculty members, the Dean of the School of Design, the directors of the Library and the Computing Center, the Associate Provost for Academic Computing, The Provost, and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. The Dean of Undergraduate Studies was encouraged by the Associate Provost for University Computing to contribute matching funds for the support of Phase Two of the project. Phase Two focused on a functional implementation of a module of the interactive prototype that could be used by students in the Fall '94 semester to test the effectiveness of the courseware concept.
