summary This paper presents a teaching experience involving students and professors from various universities, in Italy and abroad, which began in 1996 and is still on going. The Virtual Studios on the Internet (VSI) have some features in common with the Teaching Studios planned for the new programme of the faculties of Architecture in Italian universities. These are the definition of a common design theme, and the participation of disciplinary teachers. The greatest difference is in the modes of collaboration, which is achieved through information and communication technologies. The chief result of this is that the various work groups in different places can work and collaborate at the same time: the computer networks provide the means to express, communicate and share the design project.

title Modeling the structure of the flow experience

summary The flow construct (Csikszentmihalyi 1977) has recently been proposed by Hoffman and Novak (1996) as essential to understanding consumer navigation behavior in online environments such as the World Wide Web. Previous researchers (e.g. Csikszentmihalyi 1990; Ghani, Supnick and Rooney 1991; Trevino and Webster 1992; Webster, Trevino and Ryan 1993) have noted that flow is a useful construct for describing more general human-computer interactions. Hoffman and Novak define flow as the state occurring during network navigation which is: 1) characterized by a seamless sequence of responses facilitated by machine interactivity, 2) intrinsically enjoyable, 3) accompanied by a loss of self-consciousness, and 4) selfreinforcing." To experience flow while engaged in an activity, consumers must perceive a balance between their skills and the challenges of the activity, and both their skills and challenges must be above a critical threshold. Hoffman and Novak (1996) propose that flow has a number of positive consequences from a marketing perspective, including increased consumer learning, exploratory behavior, and positive affect."

summary The purpose of this article is to show that a building project design requires a concurrent engineering approach. Therefore, a concurrent preparation phase which requires the choice of a product approach applied to the building trade will be defined. During the building project design, handled data are multiple; current models, used to define, to represent, and to communicate these data, are insufficient. To solve these problems, the achievement of this approach has to be supported by reliable models and computer systems. These systems have to integrate data set and treatments one. The models and tools used in this concurrent preparation must to take into account the standards set in the domain, in particular the STEP (STandard Exchange for Product model data) project. STEP technology uses a methodology of product data definition which can be applied to a particular domain: the application protocol approach. This methodology will be applied to data and support system modelling, so that a concurrent approach to the building trade can be achieved. Finally the specification and the software architecture of this system will be presented.

summary This paper presents the study of a computer system capable of supporting the information work connected with a design project at an urban scale. The computer system must fulfil a number of specific requirements. First, it must integrate a complex set of instruments for creating, retrieving, manipulating, processing, managing the interaction between the users and the overall information regarding the project. Secondly, it must operate at a geographical level to connect the various actors involved. Third, because of the heterogeneity of the participants involved, it must be compatible with numerous systems, even low entry, to ensure effective accessibility even to small companies, firms and citizens. The computer networks extend the possibility of accessing the information beyond the project employees, towards the citizens. In the computers and in the networks, which connect them, the idea of interaction as communication and reciprocal action is inherent. A result is the possibility of interacting dynamically with the information, of assimilating, modifying, and redistributing it in progress. An high level of accessibility and interactivity with respect to information points to different approaches to architectural design and urban planning.
