summary Design Computing involves the effective application of computing technologies, digital media, formal methods and design theory to the study and practice of design. Computers are assuming a prominent role in design practice. This change has been partly brought about by economic pressures to improve the efficiency of design practice, but there has also been a desire to aid the design process in order to produce better designs. The introduction of new computer-based techniques and methods generally involves a re-structuring of practice and ways of designing. We are also seeing significant current developments that have far reaching implications for the future. These innovations are occuring at a rapid rate and are imposing increasing pressures on design professionals. A re-orientation of skills is required in order to acquire and manage computer resources. If designers are to lead rather than follow developments then they need to acquire specialist knowledge – a general Computing also demands technical competence, an awareness of advances in the field and an innovative spirit to harness the technology understanding of computers and their impact, expertise in the selection and management of computer-aided design systems, and skill in the design an implementation of computer programs and systems.

summary Research into the development of robotic modules is discussed in the context of cost-effective, small bore, non-man entry (NME) sewer renovation. Following an introduction to the engineering problem or task and the respective task-associated sensing system, interest is centred upon suitably robust task kinematics and control, where predictive modelling is implemented employing the GRASP robotic simulation software package. The physical prototype and its accompanying environment are discussed and general conclusions drawn.

Another event that month caused fewer headlines but in retrospect was just as significant. A small company from San Francisco, Worlds Incorporated, launched WorldsChat, a three dimensional environment allowing any Internet user to don a digital costume, or avatar, and travel about and converse with other people inhabiting the space. WorldsChat was appropriately modeled on a space station complete with a central hub, hallways, sliding doors, windows, and escalators to outlying pods.

summary Designing is one of the most significant of human acts. It is one of the bases for change in our society. However, designers are amongst the least recongised for society’s change agents. Surprisingly, given that designing has been occurring for many millennia, our understanding of the processes of designing is remarkably limited. Part of our understanding of designing comes not only from studying human designers as they design but from postulating design methods which describe some aspect of the design process without claiming to model the processes used by human designers. The early approaches to design methods were prescriptive when applied to human designers. More recently, design methods have been formalised not as humano-centred processes but as processes capable of computer implementation. Amongst the goals of these endeavours are to develop a better understanding of the processes of designing, to develop methods which can be computerised and to aid human designers through the introduction of novel methods which have no human counterpart. Much of this research is driven by the fact that human designs are very often incomplete, inadequate or just plainly poorly conceived for the task they are meant to address.

summary The course on CAAD at the KU Leuven is part of the course on design methodology and theory from which it is the most recent and natural extension. Attached to this course a series of assignments has been developed which bring the students in 45 hours to a non-trivial level of acquaintance with CAAD. Our assignments are primarily directed towards practice. They are built on top of AutoCAD to which we have added in-house developments in order to focus on specific pedagogical goals within a very limited time. After a general introduction on Windows (file management) and AutoCAD (basics) students make the following assignments (main pedagogical goals in between brackets). colophon (working with blocks), detail (2D-drawing, hatching, editing), facade design using a built-in system of proportion (slides, scriptfile), extraction (linking alphanumerical and graphical entities), container (level of detail, icon menus, viewports), surface modelling (modelling 3D-objects with surfaces), fractal tree (recursion in Autolisp), solid modelling (Leicester engineering building), lighting (integration of drawing and computation of illumination levels), pressure lines in an arc (interactive design of an arc), demos. The paper presents and comments these assignments and shows results from the last 2 years.

summary Case-based reasoning (CBR) is now a mature subfield of artificial intelligence. The fundamental principles of case-based reasoning have been established, and numerous applications have demonstrated its role as a useful technology. Recent progress has also revealed new opportunities and challenges for the field. This book presents experiences in CBR that illustrate the state of the art, the lessons learned from those experiences, and directions for the future. summary In this paper we discuss our experience in using virtual models to teach traditional Chinese wood construction. Although our approach is technically simple – we use a kit of model parts made with the Solid Modeler of AutoCAD, Release 12 (now Release 13), and customized commands in AutoLISP – we have had excellent results. This is because of the remarkable match between the modelling medium and the highly systematized nature of traditional Chinese wood construction. It is this crucial – and interesting – characteristic that we want students to understand and appreciate. In our first teaching experience, in the fall term, 1994-95, despite unexpected drawbacks, our approach succeeded. In fact, our students, all Hong Kong Chinese, were surprisingly enthusiastic and even took pride in the sophistication of this uniquely Chinese construction system. In 1995-96, we have used the same kit of parts in two courses: an introduction to Chinese architecture (spring term) and an advanced course in Song dynasty wood construction (fall term). We first discuss briefly the theoretical basis for our approach. We then describe the assignments, the kit of parts, and supporting materials used in our teaching experiences. Finally, we discuss our findings and consider directions for the future development and improvement of our approach.

summary The introduction of the computer into architectural studies has resulted in innovative pedagogical approaches to design education. In recent years we have employed a teaching approach in which the student models the formalization of design knowledge in a computerized environment and experiments with the formal processing of this knowledge in the generation of designs. Interacting with the computer in the generation of designs requires making design knowledge explicit and formalized. Knowledge modeling is an approach to design and education in which the designer models the design thinking involved in the making of the object. In this process appropriate computational technology is essential to support and enhance certain phenomena of reasoning. From the pedagogical point of view such computational design environment appear also to enhance design learning and performance through the capability gained in computer modelling. In this respect, there is an analogous impact on the potential of design knowledge environments which can support design performance in practice. In this paper we consider the Internetas a potential design knowledge environment. The nature of the Net as a medium for the representation, storage and accessing of design knowledge is presented and various research issues are introduced. The potential of this new medium as a resource for design learning, design practice and design collaboration derives from the attributes of the technology. We elaborate on the appropriateness of certain attributes of the medium as a potential design environment. Future possibilities of the Net as a shared design resource are proposed. Considerations of the Net as a collaboratively constructed design resource as well as a medium for collaborative design are introduced.

summary this special issue of Automation in Construction publishes a revised subset of papers originally presented at the 1996 Annual conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) held october 31 to November 2, 1996, at the University of Ariona College of Architecture in Tucson, Arizona. The title of the conference, Design Computation: Collaboration, Reasoning, Pedagogy, provides a framework in which to explore current research in architectural computing. Design computation is the overall context and is intended to suggest a broader scope than a term such as computeraided design. Collaboration and reasoning reflect current major preoccupations in the area, while pedagogy is a persistent interest of many of the memers of ACADIA. The papers chosen for this special journal edition address these themes. Few of the papers reflect just one of these themes. Though each has its own particular, explicitly stated focus, most address more than one of the themes. As a group, the papers display a range of variations.

title Geometric reasoning for the extraction of form features

summary The primary limitation of feature-recognition approaches, namely their lack of generalization, has been addressed by the development of feature-extraction techniques. This paper presents a boundary-based procedurefor the sequential extraction of form features from CAD models of objects with planar surfaces. An object is viewed as an initial basic shape that has been iteratively altered through the introduction of form features.Form features are first classified based on their effect in changing a basic shape. Geometric reasoning is then used to obtain generalized properties of the form-features' classes. Finally, form-features' classes aresequentially extracted based on the obtained properties.

summary Whilst it is often argued that computers have an positive role to play in the educational process, design tutors frequently view computer based design work as being of inferior quality to that of designs produced by traditional means. This may be no fault of the technology, but more likely a consequence of a student’s inappropriate use of that technology. It could be argued that part of the role of the design tutor is to encourage students to use technology in a more appropriate way, rather than to totally discourage the use of computers in their designs. The introduction of computer technologies has led to new ways of designing, which may be very different to the methods of design that are traditionally taught. This paper proposes that the successful implementation of CAAD in Architectural design education, can only be achieved if design tutors fully appreciate and embrace these new design methodologies, in a way which extends beyond the need to simply accept the new technology.

summary During the last decade, a new type of approaches have emerged in Japanese environmental psychology. These approaches have characteristics that they are aiming to clarify users' requirements for the environment as the design questions to be solved, compared with the traditional approaches aiming to clarify the environment-human relationship to provide actual design solutions. As an example of these new approaches, the Evaluation Grid Method (EGM), a semi-structured interview method developed by the author based on Kelly's Personal Construct Theory is introduced. In the EGM, by asking the reasons of why an environment is more preferable to others recurrently, together with leading questions (laddering), each participant's requirements to the environment are elicited structurally as well as phenomenologically. Also by cumulating each participant's requirements, the extensive structure of the requirements to the environment embraced by people is produced. In this paper, a detailed procedure and the outcome of the EGM are presented on the elicitation of workers' requirements for the office environment. Also recent applied examples where the EGM research was applied as an design aid in architectural as well as industrial field will be introduced.
