summary In this paper, definitions of collaborative design are discussed and understood in terms of a designer’s cognitive collaborations to explore his/her experiential memory for remote idea associations. Based on Schon’s reflective practice theory, Valkenburg and Dorst’s (1998) description of collaborative team designing is adopted as a model for a proposed design conversation system. The design conversation system is aimed at triggering the experiential memory of the designer by associating significant ideas from different design domains to provide different perspectives of a design situation. The paper describes a proposed framework for the design conversation system incorporating computational agents in a blackboard architecture environment.

summary The paper discusses conceptual issues, goals and preliminary results of an on-going research which aims at building a Decision Support System for public housing environmental oriented maintenance and management in a city in Southern Italy, Bari. Traditional post-war Italian housing policies are compared with more recent approaches in the field, pointing out the change from quantitative, aggregated, more simple building problems and relatedapproaches to qualitative, differentiated, complex ones integrating social, economic and environmental dimensions with the aim of regenerating deteriorated residential areas. The paper claims for the need shift, both in the human and computer areas, from traditional quantitative models to new approaches able to manage also qualitative variables, temporal dynamics, emergencies, and intentionality, since they appear key aspects of the real world to be modelled. The housing estate of Bari and its needs of maintenance and management are examined, eliciting essential related knowledge using the interview technique. The clear orientation towards sustainable policies for urban regeneration, at a local, national, and Community level, is also considered. The innovative and collaborative nature of such policies and the attention to be paid to the social aspects ofthe problem require a complex DSS, integrating various kind of hypertexts, information systems and case-based fuzzy expert systems, whose main aims, functions, software and general organisation are outlined in the paper.

summary This paper discusses the internal representation of a multi-knowledge agent decision support system that was developed for building thermal design. The system is able to provide designers with specific problem detection in thermal design without the use of rules of thumb. The paper describes how generic rules can be used as virtual agents and how these agents can interact using a blackboard model. The generic rules utilized use logical variables as a strategy to capture generality. This allows the rules todeal with variables that can be replaced by any possible term. In addition, it allows the rules to be equivalent to the infinite set of rules that could be obtained if the variables were replaced in all possible ways by terms. In the system, these terms include the building elements and systems that affect the thermal behavior of the building. Problems associated with agent conflicts and how they were resolved in such a model are described.

title Generating, evaluating and visualizing construction schedules with CAD tools

summary Collaborative AEC technologies centering around component-based CAD models support architectural and structural perspectives. The construction perspective is often neglected because an important dimension for construction–time–is missing. Construction planners are forced to abstract CAD model building components into schedule models representing time. 4D-CAD (3D-CAD+time) removes this abstraction by linking a 3D building model and schedule model through associative relationships. Adding time to 3D-CAD models extends the use of CAD tools from the design phase to the construction phase. Although commercial 4D tools exist that allow planners to build 4D models and create graphic simulations of the construction process, these tools lack features to support analysis of these models, easy generation and manipulation of such models, and realistic visualizations of the construction process. This paper discusses these shortcomings, highlights requirements for CAD tools to support construction planning tasks, and describes our efforts to develop 4D tools that generate 4D+x models that more realistically represent the construction process.

summary Location is often considered as the most important factor leading to the success of public or private services. Location is the key in maximising accessibility and keeping operating cost low. A collaborative research project between ‘Nottingham University’ and the ‘Environmental ServicesDepartment of Nottingham City Council’ is developing an ‘Intelligent Map’ for identifying optimum locations for the recycling centres in the city. The object is to develop a new decision support system for urban planners, to be used as a management and analytical tool for improving locational decisionmaking. This paper discusses the technique of the Intelligent Map, and its concept. The paper includes three main sections. The first discusses the introduction of the mini-recycling centres in Nottingham, theproblems associated with their spatial distribution, and the need for a new decision support system using GIS technology. The second examines traditional techniques using GIS for identifying optimum locations and calculating catchment areas. The third explains the concept of the Intelligent Map; discussion takes the form of an initial analysis of the likely method to be applied, and then briefly outlines some of the prototyping work that is currently taking place at Nottingham.

title Expertise and collaborative design

summary This paper describes the results of a study evaluating the effects of computer mediation on collaboratively solving architectural design problems. Pairs of graduate design students were asked to work on a landscape architecture design problem via computer terminals. In one condition they were allowed to communicate with an electronic whiteboard and a chat-line while in the other; the chat-line was substituted with video-conferencing (real-time video and audio). The protocols were evaluated according to two models. First; they were coded according to the pattern of collaboration; distinguishing meta-planning; negotiation; evaluation; and individual work. No differences were found between the two groups when coded this way. The protocols were also coded in terms of the problem-solving content; distinguishing task-related exchanges; interface-related exchanges; low-level design exchanges; and high-level design exchanges. The results showed that in the bandwidth-limited chat-line condition; participants cut down task and interface-related as well as low-level design exchanges but attempted to maintain the same amount of high-level design exchanges. When the final designs were evaluated by professional architects; no differences were found between two conditions indicating that chat-line participants implicitly compensate for the narrower bandwidth interface.

summary Architectural design practice is a collective work of different levels of expertise. Collaborative design relies on seamless meshing of specialists with different levels of expertise, skills and views. Research oncollaborative design suggests various methodologies for supporting synchronous or asynchronous communicative practices of designers in reviewing and analyzing design decisions at different stages of thedesign process. However, they do not address the provision of an action platform that would enable collaborative group decision making in architectural design. There are four requirements for this platform:1) sharing of design decisions among designers, 2) sharing of design rationale among designers, 3) detecting conflicts among design decisions, and 4) sharing of designers responses to design decisions. Thispaper presents a conceptual model of an asynchronous collaborative design environment that implements methodologies for addressing these requirements.

summary In architectural design practice, a number of design participants are involved in the schematic design process. Participants of the schematic design process perform collaboratively or individually conductedactivities at different stages of the design process. Research conducted on computer mediated architectural design systems suggests a variety of computerized methodologies to support participants in performingcollaborative activities during schematic design process. Most of the suggested methodologies are designed and ready to be implemented in specific platforms, and others are implemented and anticipated to beevaluated against the requirements of specific architectural design domains. However, there is still no single model to date that satisfactorily meets the requirements of collaborating participants duringschematic design process. Prospective users of the currently available models are obliged to choose among a vast variety of group design support solutions with little information about their potentials and pitfalls.This paper focuses on the identification of the fit between collaborating participants’ requirements, prospects of design activities and the currently developed computer mediated design paradigms. In this paper, the author discusses the findings of two different researches conducted in two different professional design domains, and identifies the type of actions prevalent to schematic design process. The author introduces an analysis of a number of computer mediated methodologies that are developed to support participants during schematic design process. As a result of this analysis, this paper introduces a classification of computer-mediated methodologies according to their potential support to tasks and activities performed during the schematic architectural design practice.

summary The correct evaluation of design proposals both by experts and future users, demands their presentation with regard to the real environment and real conditions of observation. It is interesting when analysing designs in complicated town planning situations, and becomes especially important in CIVILIZED SOCIETIES, when it concerns historic territories. Analytical works, connected with preparation of the information, corresponding in the greatest degree to the real conditions and previous scientific investigations, are carried out in a number of European educational institutions (Technical universities in Delft, Tampere, Stuttgart, etc.), corresponding to the Laboratory of videosystems of the Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy). Their results are periodically reported at conferences of the European Architectural Endoscopy Association, which in keeping with its name and status is occupied with problems of the most real reflection of the designed space. I suppose that due to the objective necessity at our future conference (the 4th conference of the EAEA) we shall discuss not tools, but methods and ways ensuring correct vision of the designed space. Because of this and the present state of the technique of presentation and also recollecting my words at the previous conferences, that technical means are only tools but not an ideology of the creative activities in designing, it is reasonable once more (or maybe not once) to return to the "accompanying" means, which sometimes, and in a historical environment, i want to underline again, in a CIVILIZED SOCIETY, can and must become decisive. And it is especially important for the simulation means to take into consideration spatial and temporal factors.

summary IT in Europe tends to become a passive reflection of American commercial interests instead of a mean of the production of European culture and society. A change of paradigm is needed from the passive, what we "can" do, towards the active way, what we want to do, deciding what is good and bad, to give an answer to needs and wishes of the society we are building. In the late years the research and teaching activity of CAAD Laboratory at DiPSA concentrate on sustainable planning, community planning and interactive design, developing computer based tools aimed at aiding the process and improving its effectiveness. The research work has been going on rapidly and successfully (some CDs and web sites were edited) but coming at real-life application we faced completely different problems and needed a completely different approach. We were not free anymore to run with "advanced" technology following a vision of the future thus avoiding any form of verification, but we found ourselves obliged to evaluate the present utility of the technology used. This caused a dramatic shift of focus from the technology itself to people who could take advantage of it and the target to reach. In other words working not to create gaps between people who can buy the latest equipment and knows how to use it and people who cannot. Our intention was to increase social participation not reduce it, by selecting people to be involved in building the environment. This meant not only lowering "technological le

summary In the highly urbanized and densely populated western part of The Netherlands, called Randstad, the space is scarce and therefore the landscape is under the constant pressure. The changes in the landscapeare often the result of decisions brought up by the actors involved in planning in different time periods and different levels of spatial scales. Currently used procedures in the spatial planning practice in TheNetherlands are long lasting and inefficient, based on the old fashioned unicentric model of decision making. The changes in modern ‘informational’ society reflect in growing need for other models than those of hierarchical type. This research deals with urban designs and corresponding decisions which caused the transformation of the original landscape into the urban environment. The aim is to develop a DSS for common citizens inpluricentric society, which will help them to define their individual opinion and choice preferences before they take part in collective negotiations with other decision makers. The DSS will be developed and tested on the case-study area of the Masterplan for South Axes in Amsterdam.

summary In this paper, we analyze the process of VRML 2.0 (Virtual Reality Modeling Language, Version 2.0) specification design for the deeper understanding of Internet-based collaboration. The VRML design process has the characteristics of being open to the public, geographically distributed, long-term, large-scale, and diverse. First, we examine the overall features of the design process by analyzing the VRML mailing list archive statistically. Secondly, we extract prototyping vocabulary (operational patterns) from the document change log. Thirdly, we analyze the process of proposing and agreeing with the PROTO node in detail. The results of analysis provide us with a guidance for facilitating innovation in the Internet-based collaboration.

summary Concern for the architectural and urban preservation problems has been considerably increasing in the past decades, and with it the necessity to investigate the consequences and opportunities opened for the conservation discipline by the development of computer-based systems. Architectural interventions on historical edifices or in preserved urban fabric face conservationists and architects with specific problems related to the handling and exchange of a variety of historical documents and representations. The recent development of information technologies offers opportunities to favour a better access to such data, as well as means to represent architectural hypothesis or design. Developing applications for the Internet also introduces a greater capacity to exchange experiences or ideas and to invest on low-cost collaborative working platforms. In the field of the architectural heritage, our research addresses two problems: historical data and documentation of the edifice, methods of representation (knowledge modelling and visualisation) of the edifice. This research is connected with the ARKIW POLONIUM co-operation program that links the MAP-GAMSAU CNRS laboratory (Marseilles, France) and the Institute HAiKZ of Kraków's Faculty of Architecture. The ARKIW programme deals with questions related to the use of information technologies in the recording, protection and studying of the architectural heritage. Case studies are chosen in order to experience and validate a technical platform dedicated to the formalisation and exchange of knowledge related to the architectural heritage (architectural data management, representation and simulation tools, survey methods, ...). A special focus is put on the evolution of the urban fabric and on the simulation of reconstructional hypothesis. Our contribution will introduce current ARKIW internet applications and experiences: The ARPENTEUR architectural survey experiment on Wieża Ratuszowa (a photogrammetrical survey based on an architectural model). A Gothic and Renaissance reconstruction of the Ratusz Krakowski using a commercial modelisation and animation software (MAYA). The SOL on line documentation interface for Kraków's Rynek G_ówny. Internet analytical approach in the presentation of morphological informations about Kraków's Kramy Bogate Rynku Krakowskiego. Object-Orientation approach in the modelling of the architectural corpus. The VALIDEUR and HUBLOT Virtual Reality modellers for the simulation and representation of reconstructional hypothesis and corpus analysis.

summary The present paper describes on-going research on Collaborative Design. The proposed model, the resulting system and its implementation refer mainly to architectural and building design in the modes and forms in which it is carried on in advanced design firms. The model may actually be used effectively also in other environments. The research simultaneously pursues an integrated model of the: a) structure of the networked architectural design process (operators, activities, phases and resources); b) required knowledge (distributed and functional to the operators and the process phases). The article focuses on the first aspect of the model: the relationship that exists among the various ‘actors’ in the design process (according to the STEP-ISO definition, Wix, 1997) during the various stages of its development (McKinney and Fischer, 1998). In Collaborative Design support systems this aspect touches on a number of different problems: database structure, homogeneity of the knowledge bases, the creation of knowledge bases (Galle, 1995), the representation of the IT datum (Carrara et al., 1994; Pohl and Myers, 1994; Papamichael et al., 1996; Rosenmann and Gero, 1996; Eastman et al., 1997; Eastman, 1998; Kim, et al., 1997; Kavakli, 2001). Decision-making support and the relationship between ‘private’ design space (involving the decisions of the individual design team) and the ‘shared’ design space (involving the decisions of all the design teams, Zang and Norman, 1994) are the specific topic of the present article.

Decisions taken in the ‘private design space’ of the design team or ‘actor’ are closely related to the type of support that can be provided by a Collaborative Design system: automatic checks performed by activating procedures and methods, reporting of 'local' conflicts, methods and knowledge for the resolution of ‘local’ conflicts, creation of new IT objects/ building components, who the objects must refer to (the ‘owner’), 'situated' aspects (Gero and Reffat, 2001) of the IT objects/building components.

Decisions taken in the ‘shared design space’ involve aspects that are typical of networked design and that are partially present in the ‘private’ design space. Cross-checking, reporting of ‘global’ conflicts to all those concerned, even those who are unaware they are concerned, methods for their resolution, the modification of data structure and interface according to the actors interacting with it and the design phase, the definition of a 'dominus' for every IT object (i.e. the decision-maker, according to the design phase and the creation of the object). All this is made possible both by the model for representing the building (Carrara and Fioravanti, 2001), and by the type of IT representation of the individual building components, using the methods and techniques of Knowledge Engineering through a structured set of Knowledge Bases, Inference Engines and Databases. The aim is to develop suitable tools for supporting integrated Process/Product design activity by means of a effective and innovative representation of building entities (technical components, constraints, methods) in order to manage and resolve conflicts generated during the design activity.

summary In this paper the authors attempt to stress the social dimension of design and the role of explicit support for human-level interaction during design systems integration. A human-centred approach is proposed by taking design integration as the collaborative use of design artefacts, and a virtual studio environment (VSE) framework is presented as an integration vehicle to link the social and technical dimensions. A VSE consists of two subsystems: the VSE base system and the domain resources. While common generic facilities for human-human interaction are embedded within the VSE base system, the domain-specific resources are loosely coupled into VSE via resource agents. A VSE prototype for the domain of building design is described, and a demonstration of the use of the VSE prototype is presented. This is then followed by some discussion on related research and further work.

summary The digital design studio has an area of application where conventional media are incapable of being used; collaboration in learning, design and dialogue with people in places other than where one lives. This distinctive opportunity has lead the authors to explore a form of design brief and virtual design studio (VDS) format not well addressed in the literature. Instead of sharing the same design brief, students in this alternative format design a project in the other students’ city and do not collaborate on the same design. Collaboration with other students takes the form of teaching each other about the city and culture served by the design. The authors discovered these studios produce a focus on site context that serves our pedagogical objectives–a blend of architectural, landscape architectural and urban design knowledge. Their students use a range of commercial CAD and computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) software common to that used in many VDS experiments reported on in the literature. However, this conventional use of technology is contrasted with a second distinctive characteristic of these studios, the use of custom software tools specifically designed to support synchronous and asynchronous three-dimensional model exchange and linked attribute knowledge. The paper analyzes some of the virtual design studio (VDS) work between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Toronto, and the University of Melbourne. The authors articulate a framework of VDS dimensions that structures their teaching and research.

summary This article reports on the recent, geographically and temporally distributed, intercollegiate Virtual Design Studio based on the 1998 implementation Phase(x) environment. Students participating in this workshop had to create a place to wait in the form of a folly. This design task was cut in five logical parts, called phases. Every phase had to be finished within a specific timeframe (one day), after which the results would be stored in a common data repository, an online MSQL database environment which holds besides the presentations, consisting of text, 3D models and rendered images, basic project information like the descriptions of the phases and design process visualization tools. This approach to collaborative work is better known as memetic engineering and has successfully been used in several educational programs and past Virtual Design Studios. During the workshop, students made use of a variety of tools, including modeling tools (specifically Sculptor), video-conferencing software and rendering programs. The project distinguishes itself from previous Virtual Design Studios in leaving the design task more open, thereby focusing on the design process itself. From this perspective, this paper represents both a continuation of existing reports about previous Virtual Design Studios and a specific extension by the offered focus. Specific attention will be given at how the different collaborating parties dealt with the data flow and modification, the crux within a successful effort to cooperate on a common design task.
