summary A primary lesson of a beginning design studio is the development of a fundamental design competence. This entails acquiring skills of integration, projection, exploration, as well as critical thinking–forming the basis of thinking “like a designer.” Plaguing the beginning architectural design student as she develops this competence are three typical problems: a lagging visual intelligence, a linking of originality with creativity, and the belief that design is an act of an individual author instead of a collaborative activity. We believe that computation support for design learning has particular attributes for helping students overcome these problems. These attributes include its inherent qualities for visualization, for explicitness, and for sharing. This paper describes five interactive multi-media exercises exploiting these attributes which were developed to support a beginning design studio. The paper also reports how they have been integrated into the course curriculum.

summary For landscape architecture students beginning to experiment with computer generated imagery, the focus should be on integrating digital media in a comprehensive manner, throughout various phases of the design process. Digital media exercises must be developed in such a manner that they support, express and enhance the design content of a studio project in conjunction with the chosen design process. In a beginning-level studio, digital media is best explored through easy-to-learn applications in a structured yet flexible studio environment. One powerful way to integrate digital media with design inquiry in a comprehensive and reciprocal manner is the electronic overlay of information and poetic impressions. This method takes on particular relevance in dealing with the multiple issues that face landscape architects today.

summary Since 1991 Virtual Reality has been used in student projects in the Building Information Technology group. It started as an experimental tool to assess the impact of VR technology in design, using the environment of the associated Calibre Institute. The technology was further developed in Calibre to become an important presentation tool for assessing design variants and final design solutions. However, it was only sporadically used in student projects. A major shift occurred in 1997 with a number of student projects in which various computer technologies including VR were used in the whole of the design process. In 1998, the new Design Systems group started a design studio with the explicit aim to integrate VR in the whole design process. The teaching effort was combined with the research program that investigates VR as a design support environment. This has lead to increasing number of innovative student projects. The paper describes the context and history of VR in Eindhoven and presents the current set-UP of the studio. It discusses the impact of the technology on the design process and outlines pedagogical issues in the studio work.

summary In this paper the authors attempt to stress the social dimension of design and the role of explicit support for human-level interaction during design systems integration. A human-centred approach is proposed by taking design integration as the collaborative use of design artefacts, and a virtual studio environment (VSE) framework is presented as an integration vehicle to link the social and technical dimensions. A VSE consists of two subsystems: the VSE base system and the domain resources. While common generic facilities for human-human interaction are embedded within the VSE base system, the domain-specific resources are loosely coupled into VSE via resource agents. A VSE prototype for the domain of building design is described, and a demonstration of the use of the VSE prototype is presented. This is then followed by some discussion on related research and further work.

summary Internet tools most effectively connect diverse groups when individuals involved experience vital human connections. Online strangers are pulled into a community in which they can see a friendly face in the crowded stream of information. Strong self expression engages an audience and can result in personal interactions which reward getting beyond the technology. A group of individual profiles can coalesce to give colorful definition to team biases, strengths and weaknesses. This paper examines how the expression of identity has been a critical factor in the success of Internet design collaborations. First, it provides context on how these projects can improve architectural education by increasing relevance. Second, it identifies opportunities for individual and team expression gathered from a series of annual international design exercises known as the Virtual Design Studio. Third, it explains strategies for fostering student expression and interaction. Finally, it cites areas for future investigation.

summary Collaboration between designers and scientists is an unusual combination to undertake the prototypical design of a teaching laboratory funded by Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The zoologists are developing a cooperative learning and interactive teaching pedagogy to make learningscience a process of critical inquiry and discovery. The industrial and interior designers are paying attention to the design issues of function and environmental support for teaching and doing the work required in a three-hour, hands-on beginning science learning space. Using both qualitative andquantitative research methods, the designers are able to determine a framework for making design decisions in prototypical beginning science environments. This framework is being developed as a guideline for designing similar environments at other institutions of higher learning. Videotape analysis precedes the research to uncover the underlying problems of the existing space and to formulate the questions for the research. Elements of a case study and an evaluative study integratewith the design process to form the basis of an intensive investigation of design issues for a beginning science teaching laboratory. Using two pretests as a baseline, the posttest data evaluates the success orfailure of the prototypical design. Both the pretests and the posttest evaluate the physical attributes of the old and new learning environment related to a beginning laboratory course in Zoology at Arizona State University.

summary Past designs have been recognised as a significant source of knowledge in architectural design. IT offers the opportunity to represent these designs not only by text, graphics and images, but also by 3D-models, computer animation, sound and video. In spite of the growing availability of multimedia archives, libraries and case bases, their contribution to the development of students? ?design craftsmanship? so far seems to be limited. If IT wants to make a valuable contribution to this development, the challenge is not to passively provide students with information on past designs, but to (inter)actively support the dynamic interplay between these designs and the student?s design process. We are developing a tool that fundamentally attempts to explore this potential by using information as a vehicle to initiate, nurture and improve this interplay. The tool, which is intended to assist (student-)architects during the early conceptual stage of design, is conceived as a an (inter)active workhouse rather than a passive warehouse: it is interactively developed by and actively develops its users? knowledge. We have implemented a working prototype of the tool, at first stage for the design studio, yet with the potential of expansion into the office setting.

summary Architects acquire an important part of their design knowledge from existing designs. Specific design projects from the past form an indispensable source of information and inspiration. Hence the idea todevelop a digital library of design cases that can be easily accessed during design. The paper describes a recently developed prototype of such a case library, intended to assist architecture students in the studio,yet with the potential of expansion into the office setting. When students enrol into a design project, they usually receive a reader with some relevant examples. At first sight, the digital case library only seems torepresent these examples into another medium, yet there are some important differences between both. Unlike the reader, the library has at its core an indexing-system which allows the easy retrieval of relevantinformation. By labelling projects with several features and making links between similar designs, the tool supports both directed search and browsing. A second difference is that the library is interactive. Studentsare not only able to consult interesting examples, but also to add other projects they consider relevant, to make links between them, to create extra indices etc. Finally, the tool allows to combine several media andto create links to external information sources.

summary A rich vocabulary has evolved for describing architecture. It serves not only as a means of communication, but also as an embodiment of concepts relating to form, space, structure, function, mood, and symbolism. We architects not only speak in terms of walls, rooms, roofs, arches, etc., we see in terms of them and think in terms of them, as well. Such concepts are integral to our ability to design. Typical CAD representations, however, are based on geometric/mathematical elements like points, lines, planes, and symbols. Even more experimental approaches like parametric shapes or procedural assemblies correspond poorly to architectural elements, and seldom lend themselves well to making conceptual changes that would allow exploration of design alternatives. Small wonder some architecture schools experience a division between computer and studio courses, or even between computer and studio faculty. Different ways of talking and thinking are involved. The concepts involved are often mutually exclusive. This paper discusses an attempt to address this conceptual mismatch, using what are termed “protean” (meaning “very changeable”) elements. These are high-level elements corresponding to architectural concepts like “wall,” or “dome.” They each have parameters appropriate for the particular type of element they represent, and produce the polyhedra necessary for graphics based on these parameters. A system is being implemented to allow models to be constructed using these elements. The protean elements form a loosely structured model, in which some elements hierarchically contain others, and some elements are essentially freestanding, being created and manipulated independently of other elements. Characteristics of protean element are discussed, including the underlying object-oriented structure, the relationship between elements and graphics, and functions associated with the objects. A scheme is explained whereby all parts of a design can be represented even when the design includes extremely unusual forms not conforming to predictable classes of elements. The necessary support framework is also discussed; general flow of the system and mechanisms for viewing the model and editing subcomponents are explained. The current status of the project, and intentions for future work are discussed. The project has been partially implemented, and the necessary framework to support the system is mostly complete.

summary In January 1998, the Montana State University School of Architecture embarked upon an initiative to successfully integrate computer technology into its design curriculum. At that time only a handful of student computers could be found in the design studio. By January 1999 over 95 students have and use computers in their courses. The increase in computer access and use is occurring through a five-phase initiative called the Universal Lab-a school-wide commitment to the full integration of computer technology into all design studios, support courses and architectural electives. The Universal Lab uses the areas of Access, Instruction and Application as the vehicles for appropriate placement and usage of digital concepts within the curriculum. The three-pronged approach allows each instructor to integrate technology using one, two or all three areas with varying degrees of intensity. This paper presents the current status of the Universal Lab-Phase I and Phase II-and describes the effect of this program on student work, course design and faculty instruction.

summary In 1998, architecture schools in the three nation region of the upper Rhine came together to undertake a joint design studio. With the support of the Center for Entrepeneurship in Colmar, France, the schools worked on the reuse of the Kuenzer Mill situated near Herbolzheim, Germany. The students met jointly three times during the semester and then worked on the project at their home universities usng conventional methods. This project was essential to generating closer ties between the participating students, tutors and institutions and as such, the results were quite positive. So much so, that the organisers decided to repeat the exercise one year later. However, it became clear that although the students had met three times in large groups, the real success of a co-operative design studio would require mechanisms which allow far more intimate interaction among the participants, be they students, teachers or outside experts. The experiences from the Netzentwurf at the Institut für Industrielle Bauproduktion (ifib) showed the potential in a web based studio and the addition of ifib to the three nation group led to the development of the VuuA platform. The first project served to illuminate the the differences in teaching concepts among the partner institutions and their teaching staff as well as problems related to the integration of students from three countries with two languages and four different faculties: landscape architecture, interior design, architecture and urban planning. The project for the Fall of 1999 was the reuse of Fort Kléber in Wolfisheim by Strasbourg, France. The students again met on site to kick off the Semester but were also instructed to continue their cooperation and criticism using the VuuA platform.

summary The Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has conducted a series of experimental design studios, as part of a larger ongoing research endeavour called The Design Studio of the Future, an interdisciplinary effort focusing on geographically distributed computer-mediated design and work group collaboration issues. A recent exploration was a collaborative design project joining geographically dispersed design students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners from Kumamoto University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, and MIT to examine the nature of computer networked collaborative environments and advanced computer-aided design technologies to support architectural education and practice. This paper will describe this project, which provided the students and faculty members with practical experience in the use of emerging technologies for collaboration, design, and communication in both the day-to-day activities of distributed groupwork as well as in the more formalized reviews.

summary Computers have the potential to radically change the process of architectural design, and match more closely the formal aspirations of contemporary designers. What, then, should be the direction educators take in response to the opportunities created by the use of computers in the design process? There are, perhaps, two obvious methods of teaching Digital Design at a university level; a course adjunct to a design studio, or a course offered independently of a design studio. The computer is a facilitator of design ideas, but by itself, is not a creator of content. The primary responsibility of the design studio is the creation of content. It is the implementation of theory and critical analysis which should be the core concern of studio instruction. Given the limited time students are exposed to design studio it would seem appropriate, then, that the digital tools, which facilitate the design process, be taught separately, so as not to dilute the design studios importance. Likewise, this separation should allow the student to concentrate attention on Digital Design as a comprehensive process, beginning with initial massing studies and ending with high resolution presentation drawings. The burden of learning this new process is difficult as well as time consuming. Students are generally struggling to learn how to design, much less to design on the computer. In addition, the current lack of digital skills on the part of design faculty makes it difficult to create a level of consistency in teaching digital design. Compounding these problems is the cost to architectural departments of providing hardware and software resources sufficient to have a computer on every studio desk.

summary As computer technology is integrated into design curricula, significant shifts in pedagogy must be developed that acknowledge and incorporate alterations in teaching design process. This paper offers a critical analysis of the effects on design productivity of an experimental design studio that proposed and investigated an interdependent relationship of mechanical and digital technologies. A design studio was developed based on linking digital and physical technologies through systematic transformations of one technology into the other. Transformations were structured as a series of projects to test concepts of "making/building" in the form of abstracting/ making concrete, building/un-building, and un-making/making. Student permutations of the transforming operations revealed that design processes occurred as a mutuality, rather than an opposition, of the virtual and material. Design activity was revealed as a patterned flow of systematic formulations built on previous transformations. Key results of the studio indicated increased early development of conceptualization, increased refinement and integration of design issues throughout the project stages, and greater sensitivity to use of materials in a more holistic realization of concepts. Current curriculum structures that fragment technologies and subjugate ideas of craft, technology, and ideation into separate courses or educational issues, do so at the expense of substantive design refinement. The experimental studio of interdependent technologies offers digital and mechanical technologies as an holistic feature of design processes, thus indicating a greater integration of "support" courses into design studio and implicating an increased role of "hands-on constructing" such as that in wood/metal shops.

summary The work we present may be considered as the consolidation of a methodology that was already outlined in the paper presented in the second M&D congress held in San Sebastian (1998). We establish that, in architectural design, the computer is only used in the last step in order to achieve the traditional Euclidean design in a more precise and comfortable way and to improve the quality of the handmade designs. Our proposal consists in modifying the process from the very beginning of the creative act. That is, when the design conception is born. If we want to obtain the maximum benefit of the computer possibilities, we ought to support this conception by means of a language tuned with the mentioned tool. Due to the fact that the internal language used by the computer for producing graphics is mathematical, we must incorporate, in some way, this language in the codification of the creative process. In accordance with this setting, we propose a mathematical grammar for the design based on the construction of modulated standard mathematical functions. This grammar is developed independently from the graphical software and it is specified only when a particular computer program for the effective generation on the graphical objects is selected.

summary How to integrate CAAD into design education, and how to teach CAAD as a tool of design thinking has been a difficult issue left unresolved for architecture schools. This paper discusses the possible approach to these issues which were experienced in a Japanese university. In the first section, it will summarize the present situation of CAAD education in Japan. The second section reports the framework of design education and roles of CAAD programmed in a department. The third section introduces an example of course programs and students’ work. The fourth section observes a recent outcome of experimented program, such as, students’ work, scores and some results of a student questionnaire. In the final section, it will discuss the approach that introduce different levels of CAAD usage to design studios as the level of design education advances, was successful to integrate CAAD into design education.

summary This paper traces the relationship of CAAD with creative studio work within a ‘year based’ school of architecture where the curriculum is founded on a series of ‘Core Projects’. These ‘Core Projects’ are structured so that undergraduates undertake a structured study of the essentials of architecture in an orderly progression. Within this pattern CAAD is not a stand-alone subject or module and as students do not work in units, it is difficult to run specialist CAAD options. The subject is regarded as another skill in communication and tuition in CAAD is provided as part of the acquisition of central architectural skills. CAAD, therefore is regarded as one of the components of skills and knowledge needed to support and the ‘Core Projects’ which account for about 70% of the course assessment. The paper will analyse the evolution of CAAD education within this kind of course in Architecture, reflecting on some of the tensions that have arisen through this and use student work to illustrate some of the lessons learnt over this period

summary Recent progress in hardware and software technology for CAAD systems offer new challenges and opportunities to architects and design educators in aspects such as modeling systems for sketching and design evaluation; knowledge bases as a source of design thinking; network or CD-ROM image banks of design archives; video-conferencing to support geographically distributed interdisciplinary collaboration; etc. Despite expectations that CAAD system would support creative and productive design processes more effectively than those in a traditional design studio, their contributions to architectural design practice and design education still seem to be limited. The fault is, in part, that there are many designers and educators who have yet to experience designing in the medium (as opposed to simply drafting) and partly because digital design tools and technologies have still to be developed or to be integrated to a process of designers' activities. Clearly there are opportunities for further efforts to explore and develop better CAAD technologies as well as to demonstrate and prove possible impact of their application on design practice and design education.

summary Architecture is built information (Schmitt, 1999). Architects have the task of restructuring and translating information into buildable designs. The beginning of the design process where the briefing is transformed into an idea is a crucial phase in the design process. It is where the architect makes decisions which influence the rest of the design development process (Vries et al., 1998). It is at this stage where most information is unstructured but has to be integrated into a broad context. This is where TAP is positioned – to support the architect in finding solutions through the creation of spatially structured information sets without impairing thereby the creative development. We want to enrich the inspiration of an architect with a new kind of information design. A further aspect is workflow in a distributed process where the architect’s work becomes one aspect of a decentralised working patterns. The software supports collaborative work with models, sketches and text messages within an uniform surface. The representations of the various media are connected and combined with each other and the user is free to combine them according to his or her needs.
