summary Design can be thought of as a process of interpolation. In the face of incomplete and distorted conditions, the designer interjects solutions that interpolate and mediate the given situation. The Upper level Electronic Studio in the Spring term 1999 investigated the nature of interpolation and its relationship to process, space, and program. In particular, it investigated how virtual space can interpolate and augment physical space. The students also researched the multiplicity of meanings of interpolation such as: Insertion/interjection, estimation, linkage, mediation, transformation, and augmentation. The process of interpolation was then mapped into a real architectural problem: The re-design of Hayes and Crosby Halls as an integrated School of Architecture and Planning for the 21st century. Some students took advantage of the option to choose other sites and building programs.

summary One of the most consistent, powerful and philosophical ideas which has run like a silk thread through the short and erratic history of the development of computer aided architectural design is that of user participation in the design decision-making process. It is not an idea with which the architectural profession is particularly comfortable but it is, the authors claim, one which is central to the professional ethic and, therefore, to its ultimate survival.

Design decision-making is, if addressed properly, a hugely, complex multi-variety, multi-person process on which precious little serious research has been focused. In the late 1960's the Design Methods Group in the USA and the Design Research Society in the UK formulated paper-based models of the design process and anticipated, in some regards with un-nerving accuracy, the way in which the application of information technologies would impinge beneficially on the process of design decision-making and, therefore, on the quality of the built environment.

One concept expressed at that time was as follows: (•) the application of computers to the modeling and prediction of the cost and performance behavior of alternative design solutions allows subjective value judgements to be better informed and more explicitly audited, and that (•) such subjective value judgements should be made by those most affected by them, i.e. the future owners and users of buildings. //

This paper is devoted to the critical re-examination of this concept, on the seminal research and development which has kept the notion alive over 30 years, and, most importantly in the context of the theme of ACADIA 1999, how the current advances in multimedia, virtual reality and internet access are not yet making its ubiquitous adoption inevitable: in short, a plea for Media in Mediation.

summary New media have been successfully taken up in music, films, car design, fashion, magazine and book publishing, the sex industry, and education. Only architecture and urban design are slow to incorporate new media technologies. To some extent, architecture and mediation are locked into a conflicting, for the most part mutually excluding, relationship. At first sight this looks logical; architecture is a place, a real, once-only place, which you experience by visiting it. You do not experience architecture through dissolving a building and electronically replicating it a billion times in the air. But all technology is social before it becomes a technique; the technology of mediation needs to be more deeply incorporated within the practice of architecture, and to be more widely understood and supported before it can be fully exploited as a tool. This process is just beginning; as yet there is no fully evolved ideological scope which incorporates the new mediated position as an essential part of architecture. New mediation technologies have taken over some of the functions of buildings, such as security, surveillance, and communication with the outside, but these are not the most relevant aspects for the practice of architecture itself.
