summary Growing capacities of the Internet-WWW as a digital graphical medium are rapidly opening doors towards professional communication particularly fostering the dialogue within disciplines relying on those resources. It is now feasible to incorporate through virtual congresses and related events a vast group of, formerly, non-participants to events relying on physical presence. Specifically, as ibero-american architects, we must make appropriate use of advantages brought upon us by the joint effort of telecommunications and informatics that allow the challenging of, until now, insurmountable difficulties on cohesive collective professional links, derived from faulty communications and physical isolation typical to our subregion. This paper aims to provide an updated frame to the subject of virtual congresses on architecture, illustrating it with a germinal and pioneering experience: “ICVA- I Virtual Congress on Architecture 1999-2000” with an iberoamerican projection in the vicinity of a thousand registrations, and of the important experiences and conclusions thereof derived.

summary ¿Can the computer improves the architectural creativity? This question is explored through a Virtual-Reality system developed for the modeling of timber structures, based on parametric elements, constructive programming and immersive visualization on real-time. Making experiences of evaluation with advanced students of architecture, whose use the system in the beginning of projects, compared with other group use not the system. This research faces the possibilities to rationalizate part of the creative process in architecture, broading the role of computer and its contribution to quality of design, and extending the possibilities to teach and share the creation of project. It is argue that major potential in this field is the swiftness, formal variety and spatial living of design, challenging the differences between objective and subjective.

summary Our architectonical environment is based on the material concept - entity whose control marks the relevance of the XX century: the atom. Across the threshold of the XXI century a new virtual entity - concept: the bit, spreads to became the basic unit of power - control - production, being its more dynamic evidence the phenomenon known as Internet, establishing complex relationships with groups constituted in the net like Virtual Communities, outlining metaphors that involve Urbanists and Architects inviting them as protagonist. Against this newest reality the Architect should change his vision of the typical CAAD work in relative isolation with his computer, until crossing the doors of the “digital reality”; we search to show the contemporary Architect as a manager coordinating multiple resources with different importance: into the alternative of building digital realities, inviting the architectonical students to integrated this Virtual Communities or conform his owns.

title Measuring the Impact of Media on Architectural Design (Measuring the Impact of Media on Architectural Design)
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 93-97
summary The relationship between the media and architectural design can be an important factor and can influence the design outcome. However, the nature, direction and magnitude of this relationship are unknown. Consequently, there have been many speculative claims about this relationship and almost none of them are supported with empirical research studies. In order to investigate these claims and to provide a testable framework, an empirical study has been conducted. A set of quantitative measures was developed to assess the differences between the two media and the effects on the architectural design. The results suggested that media influenced certain aspects of students™ designs. It is concluded that there is a strong relationship between the media and architectural design. The type of media not only changes some quantifiable design parameters but also affects the quality of design.

source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 179-181
summary This work highlights the application of GIS in the registration of resources identified as the environmental heritage of urban areas. To begin with, a brief description of the data collection method, based on local communities’ perception, is provided. It is maintained that the consideration of social values attributed by the population results in a more legitimate spatial knowledge, allowing for the identification of the more relevant elements, according to local inhabitants' statements. Finally, an emphasis is given to data processing techniques, asserting that the use of computer aided tools can ease the diffusion of knowledge about the society’s environmental heritage. This, in turn, may activate the recollection - and the preservation - of the cultural memory and, eventually, the formulation of strategies for recovering built heritage. It also opens the way to expand upon political conscience and social participation, enlarging the concept of citizenship.

title The Silk Road: An Interactive Online Encyclopaedia as a Foundation for Networked Education in Design
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 50-54
summary This paper describes a multidisciplinary design studio project conducted in Spring 2000 titled “The Silk Road”. The studio is an implementation of an innovative initiative in design education known as Networked Education in Design (NED) and is a further component in a series of on-line, interactive design studios under development at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design. NED is an educational philosophy, a pedagogical strategy encompassing several different aspects of Internet and Intranet communications, multimedia and shared learning environments, with the goal to decentralise the campus experience, enhance the local-global academic dialogue, and create an interdisciplinary, extendable and flexible virtual learning environment. In the case illustrated here, NED was manifested as an “Electronic Encyclopaedia” exercise designed to provide a universally applicable body of knowledge for students to use in design studios within their field of study, resulting in a rich and diverse body of work which in its disciplinary diversity manifested a common epistemological root.

title Design Desk Critiques: Digital or Face-to-Face?
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 41-44
summary Internet tools are becoming a legitimate option for conducting design discussions in a global market, but architects are uncertain of how these tools may affect the discussions. The desk critique is an important kind of design discussion in both education and professional practice. This research is employing empirical methods to compare desk critiques. The independent variable in the study is the collaboration medium, which may be either a face-to-face environment or the Internet collaboration software. Pairs of student and instructor participate in sessions with each medium, and their interaction is recorded on videotape. The videotape content is transcribed into sequences of coded events to permit quantitative analysis. Although the research is incomplete, the preliminary results suggest that for some participants and under some circumstances the digital desk critiques are superior to the face-to-face desk critiques. The results of the research may lead to improved methods of conducting design discussion using the Internet.

summary This paper is a summary of my last degree in architecture (discussed in December 1999) with Prof. Celestino Soddu and Prof. Enrica Colabella. In this work I had the possibility to reach complexity by a generative approach with the construction of a paradigm that organizes the different codes of project identity. My general objective was to design shape complexity in variable categories : 3d space surfaces, 2d drawings and 2d textures. I was to discover the identity of one of my favourite architects of the 20th century : Antoni Gaudì, by constructing codes relative to shape complexity. I defined my particular objective in the possibility to abduct from Gaudì's imaginary reference the generatives codes that operate in the logical processing I use to create a possible species project. The next step was to verify the exact working of the new generative codes by means of 3d scenaries, that are recognizable as "Antoni Gaudì specie's architecture". Whit project processing on the generative codes and not on a possible resulting shape design, I was able to organize by my general paradigm the attributes of the project's species : different shapes, different attributes (color, scale, proportion), to get to possible and different scenarys, all recognizable by the relative class codes. I chose three examples in Barcellona built during the period 1902 to 1914 : The Parco Guell, Casa Batllò and Casa Milà are the three reference sceneryes that I used to create the generative codes. In the second step I defined different codes that operate in sequence (it is defined in the paradigm) : The generatives codes are only subjective; they are one possible solution of my interpretation of Antoni Gaudì's identity. This codes operate in four differents ways : Geometrical codes for 2d shapes Geometrical codes for interface relations Spatial codes for 3d extrusion of 2d shapes Geometrical codes for 2d and 3d texturing of generated surfaces. By a stratified application of this codes I arrived at one idea for all the generative processes but many different, possible scenaryes, all recognizable in Gaudì's species. So, my final result has made possible sceneryes belonging to related species defined previously. At the end of my research I designed a project by combination : using Antoni Gaudì's generative codes on a new 3d scenary with a shape catalyst : the Frank Lloyd Wright Guggenheim Museum of New York. In this process I created a "hybrid scenary" : a new species of architectural look; a Guggenheim museum planned by Wright with a god pinch of Gaudì.

summary The different approaches to virtuality in connection with graphical representation is the main theme of this paper. In the first part, the trends of global civilization are seen as a kind of over valuation of processes in progress. In this sense action itself is more important than things. The way as means have substituted the ends is discussed. In this context the role played by images as vehicles going between things creates the need of graphical objects. Following this, the meaning of “graphics” in connection with the different planes of virtuality are discussed. In the same way the concept of “virtual space” is examined. It is shown that the notion of “space” is hard to grasp if an attempt of rigorous definition is made. Finally, a discussion about the graphical representation of architectural space leads to some conclusions on the action of computers as instances of a new kind of virtuality: that which deals with objects without touching them.

summary The paper presents part of a research developed close to LRV, Laboratory of Virtual Reality of the program of Post-Graduation of the Engineering of production of UFSC. The research aims to answer the approaches for the design of Human-Computer Interfaces, called HCI, for virtual media. Being considered VR the more advanced computer interface technology, at least by the point of view of the interactivity, how come guarantee its usability and at the same time draw graphic interfaces that possess aesthetic and functional value? Besides, in virtual space with or without immersion, how can the design of the interface contribute to stimulate the user’s interactivity with the system in VR? These and other subjects are essential for those who work with interface design for computer systems, and that comes across the need of presenting medias that use virtual reality technology. Through this article a study is presented on the design techniques, the used tools, the recommendations and the necessary requirements of visual communication for HCI for virtual spaces.

summary This paper analyzes the graphic digital interfaces of multiuser environments. Throughout the analysis of several graphic interfaces existing on the web - textual, 2D graphics and 3D graphics - and the role of the avatars (the body interface), the goal is to rethink the role of these interfaces in the contemporary time, just like a way to represent a subject (and a world) that is fragmented, multiple and deconstructed. After the birth of the www, the graphic interface of the computer, which was used to design graphic pages, turned also to be a tool to design digital environments. With the emergence of multiuser environments, the graphic interface should not only mediate the relationship man / machine, but also interface the relationship man / man. In this context, some questions, as the presence, the activity and the identity on the web should be graphically solved. What does online conversations look like?

title Experimental Search for Order in the Code of Generated Drawings
source International Conference on Generative Art
summary In a generative system a set of rules is used to create line-oriented drawings. The intentions of the artist are supported and constrained by the rules. If the entire system is designed and programmed by the artist, its generated results can come very close to the intetions persued. The drawing itself comes into existence in a single run of the system. The purity of such an approach has an inherent aesthetic to it, and the results produced seem to reflect this. After production there is (a) the drawing, and (b) the code which generated it. Feeding the code of one such drawing into a postprocessing cycle opens up a range of further possibilities. The paper experimentally explores such possibilities with a focus on finding and constructing order in disorderly arrangements.
