title A Reconstrução Virtual do Antigo Passeio Público de Mestre Valentim: Metodologia de Trabalho e Pesquisa (The Virtual Reconstruction of the Mestre Valentin's Old "Passeio Publico" do Antigo Public Passeio of Mestre Valentim: Methodology and Research)
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 171-173
summary This work, part of the thesis named “The Passeio Público of Rio de Janeiro: Historical Analysis through Space Perception”, has the purpose to show the methodological process realized for the virtual reconstruction of the Passeio Público idealized by Mestre Valentim da Fonseca e Silva. That space, constructed at the end of 18 th century, was inspired by the French rationalists gardens, and existed until the 1860’s decade, when it was transformed by Auguste Glaziou's reformation, who conceived a new design for the Passeio Público, inspired by the landscape English gardens. To the virtual reconstruction, it was utilized iconographical sources - old photos, engravings and plans - plus travelers reports who passed by there before the reformation of 1860’s, which could enlighten details that wouldn’t appear in the consulted images. So, the final model reproduce with fidelity the whole original architectural elements conceived by Mestre Valentim to the Passeio, and also the correct articulation of the architectural elements that once existed there.

source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 120-122
summary The paper is focused around a critical discussion of the digital representation and the architectural design process. Digital technology is now widely accepted and computers are causing a profound impact in the way reality and artificial objects are described and represented. Computers are now transforming skills, design processes, production processes and organizations. However, the evidence suggests that there are no fundamental changes in the architectural design process. It is acknowledged that the design process in architecture goes through representations and entails two altering phases: one generating tentative possibilities and hypothesis, and another of testing and evaluation. Based on this discussion a new way of using digital technology in architectural conception and design is suggested.

summary Technological innovations are driven in such dynamism, which do not favour a reflective process. Novelty is absorbed, in many cases, without criticism, in an immediate way. Concerning Architectural and Urbanism Education, a systematic reflection on the impact of new information technology to students training should not be omitted. As visual codes are the prime expression of architects, it is important to evoke the assumption of drawing as a language in order to evaluate it in regard to the new reality. Intending to broaden the discussion on these issues and to pose in theoretical means practical matters on didactics, it will be investigated the implications of computational resources - specially CAD systems - in graphic expression, in design thinking and their consequences to the education of future architects. Learning visual thinking, and being skillful at traditional as much as digital means, challenges today’s student.

summary The instantaneous nature of globalized information has brought places closer together and homogenized space, eliminating regional differences. Contemporary urban architecture and the technical-scientific- informational quality of the human-made environment innovates the rationality of the dominant actors in society. The field of telecommunications has developed substantially in the last 30 years, and today we are participants in a digital era, that has not only shortened distances but revolutionized the concepts of time and space. Telematics is a fundamental element of cities at the end of the millennium and has become a new instrument of social control. Electronic vigilance systems, as an application of telematics, are now widely used in cities, and a new urban space is being configured based on this dynamic. This paper is an introductory essay on the topic, which is essential in the understanding of urban spatial dynamics, and its objective is to point out fields for future research.

summary The present graphic computer system allows defining high-level shape problems with great freedom. In free-form surface modeling it comes to be a good reason to develop an example that shows, which is the best way to create, modify and control complex free-form shapes in three-dimensional architectonic virtual modeling. The parameters of Bezier curves are not simple. But the use of Splines curves let us a friendly free form curves management with a great designer performance level. Unfortunately, the standard computer graphic tools to control these entities have a lot of variations, and normally create an unclear and confuse interface for generic users without several knowledge of mathematics and geometry. With the help of an example, this paper expose the use of computer graphics to make models of architectonic buildings with complex shapes that contains free-form surfaces. At the same time, it is an evaluation of how the standard CAD software processes this problem.
