title O_1:// the hypertextu(r)al matrix
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 75-76
summary Founded in 1995 LAB[au], laboratory for architecture and urbanism, links theoretic research LAB[a+u] to concrete works of conception and realisations LA.BAU. LAB[au] elaborates a “hyperdesign” investigating the implications of new technologies of communication and computation in spatiotemporal and social processes and their forms of representation as architecture and urbanism. The transposition of the hypertext model to architectural and urban concepts question the mutation of the spatial and semantic construct of space. The definition of architecture as a code is based on “glocal” systems according to the processes of computation and communication.

title Integrated design in a service marketplace
source Computer-Aided Design, Vol. 32 (2) (2000) pp. 97-107
summary This paper presents a service marketplace vision for enterprise-wide integrated design modeling. In this environment, expert participants and product developmentorganizations are empowered to publish their geometric design, CAE, manufacturing, or marketing capabilities as live services that are operable over the Internet. Theseservices are made available through a service marketplace. Product developers, small or large, can subscribe to and flexibly inter-relate these services to embody adistributed product development organization, while simultaneously creating system models that allow the prediction and analysis of integrated product performance. It ishypothesized that product development services will become commodities, much like many component-level products are today. It will be possible to rapidly interchangeequivalent design service providers so that the development of the product and the definition of the product development organization become part of the same process.Computer-aided design tools will evolve to facilitate the publishing of live design services. A research prototype system called DOME is used to illustrate the concept and apilot study with Ford Motor Company is used in a preliminary assessment of the vision.

title Enseñanza de la representación manual y digital, para arquitectos y diseñadores [Teaching Hand and Digital Representation to Architects and Designers]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary The supremacy of the digital means of representation and communication and the resulting shift of the manual means in the field of design and architecture, have engendered multiple opinions and literature. They focus and analyze the virtues and risks, the losses and substitutions, and the different expressive, productive and conceptual results of their leading role in the creative process. Furthermore, if we consider both as two extremes, apparently opposed, a broad panorama of combinations and additions are produced by the emerging group of hybrid practices. This motivated the development of a research project in the Universidad Nacional del Litoral de Santa Fe, Argentina, under the Program CAI+D 2000 dealing with Design and the Analog – Digital Means. From this project emerged a collection of conceptual speculations and experimentations in the extended field of representation, extended by the incorporation of new means and hybridations, searching for new parameters and methods for professional training and practice. Key words: analog, digital, graphics, means, representation.

source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 243-246
summary ¿Can the computer improves the architectural creativity? This question is explored through a Virtual-Reality system developed for the modeling of timber structures, based on parametric elements, constructive programming and immersive visualization on real-time. Making experiences of evaluation with advanced students of architecture, whose use the system in the beginning of projects, compared with other group use not the system. This research faces the possibilities to rationalizate part of the creative process in architecture, broading the role of computer and its contribution to quality of design, and extending the possibilities to teach and share the creation of project. It is argue that major potential in this field is the swiftness, formal variety and spatial living of design, challenging the differences between objective and subjective.

summary Our architectonical environment is based on the material concept - entity whose control marks the relevance of the XX century: the atom. Across the threshold of the XXI century a new virtual entity - concept: the bit, spreads to became the basic unit of power - control - production, being its more dynamic evidence the phenomenon known as Internet, establishing complex relationships with groups constituted in the net like Virtual Communities, outlining metaphors that involve Urbanists and Architects inviting them as protagonist. Against this newest reality the Architect should change his vision of the typical CAAD work in relative isolation with his computer, until crossing the doors of the “digital reality”; we search to show the contemporary Architect as a manager coordinating multiple resources with different importance: into the alternative of building digital realities, inviting the architectonical students to integrated this Virtual Communities or conform his owns.

title Developing a Methodology for the Study of Urban Transformation
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 140-142
summary There are certain limitations in studying urban development and transformation by depending solely on traditional media. The investigation of historical urban data, both architectural and site information, is difficult to analyze unless all of the urban elements can be visualized simultaneously. The application of digital media provides a model for reconstructing and analyzing certain architectural elements from the past. This paper describes a research project that focuses on the visualization of the historical development of an urban area. In general, our research is aimed at developing a model and Philadelphia is chosen as a case study. An emphasis is placed on identification, categorization and representation of information in a way that is useful for urban researchers for analysis.

title Measuring the Impact of Media on Architectural Design (Measuring the Impact of Media on Architectural Design)
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 93-97
summary The relationship between the media and architectural design can be an important factor and can influence the design outcome. However, the nature, direction and magnitude of this relationship are unknown. Consequently, there have been many speculative claims about this relationship and almost none of them are supported with empirical research studies. In order to investigate these claims and to provide a testable framework, an empirical study has been conducted. A set of quantitative measures was developed to assess the differences between the two media and the effects on the architectural design. The results suggested that media influenced certain aspects of students™ designs. It is concluded that there is a strong relationship between the media and architectural design. The type of media not only changes some quantifiable design parameters but also affects the quality of design.

title The Intelligent Sketch: Developing a Conceptual Model for a Digital Design Assistant
source Eternity, Infinity and Virtuality in Architecture [Proceedings of the 22nd Annual Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture / 1-880250-09-8] Washington D.C. 19-22 October 2000, pp. 137-145
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2000.137
summary The computer is a relatively new tool in the practice of Architecture. Since its introduction, there has been a desire amongst designers to use this new tool quite early in the design process. However, contrary to this desire, most Architects today use pen and paper in the very early stages of design to sketch. Architects solve problems by thinking visually. One of the most important tools that the Architect has at his disposal in the design process is the hand sketch. This iterative way of testing ideas and informing the design process with images fundamentally directs and aids the architect’s decision making. It has been said (Schön and Wiggins 1992) that sketching is about the reflective conversation designers have with images and ideas conveyed by the act of drawing. It is highly dependent on feedback. This “conversation” is an area worthy of investigation. Understanding this “conversation” is significant to understanding how we might apply the computer to enhance the designer’s ability to capture, manipulate and reflect on ideas during conceptual design. This paper discusses sketching and its relation to design thinking. It explores the conversations that designers engage in with the media they use. This is done through the explanation of a protocol analysis method. Protocol analysis used in the field of psychology, has been used extensively by Eastman et al (starting in the early 70s) as a method to elicit information about design thinking. In the pilot experiment described in this paper, two persons are used. One plays the role of the “hand” while the other is the “mind”- the two elements that are involved in the design “conversation”. This variation on classical protocol analysis sets out to discover how “intelligent” the hand should be to enhance design by reflection. The paper describes the procedures entailed in the pilot experiment and the resulting data. The paper then concludes by discussing future intentions for research and the far reaching possibilities for use of the computer in architectural studio teaching (as teaching aids) as well as a digital design assistant in conceptual design.

title A Reconstrução Virtual do Antigo Passeio Público de Mestre Valentim: Metodologia de Trabalho e Pesquisa (The Virtual Reconstruction of the Mestre Valentin's Old "Passeio Publico" do Antigo Public Passeio of Mestre Valentim: Methodology and Research)
source SIGraDi’2000 - Construindo (n)o espacio digital (constructing the digital Space) [4th SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 85-88027-02-X] Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) 25-28 september 2000, pp. 171-173
summary This work, part of the thesis named “The Passeio Público of Rio de Janeiro: Historical Analysis through Space Perception”, has the purpose to show the methodological process realized for the virtual reconstruction of the Passeio Público idealized by Mestre Valentim da Fonseca e Silva. That space, constructed at the end of 18 th century, was inspired by the French rationalists gardens, and existed until the 1860’s decade, when it was transformed by Auguste Glaziou's reformation, who conceived a new design for the Passeio Público, inspired by the landscape English gardens. To the virtual reconstruction, it was utilized iconographical sources - old photos, engravings and plans - plus travelers reports who passed by there before the reformation of 1860’s, which could enlighten details that wouldn’t appear in the consulted images. So, the final model reproduce with fidelity the whole original architectural elements conceived by Mestre Valentim to the Passeio, and also the correct articulation of the architectural elements that once existed there.

summary This paper proposes a dialogue between the poetic notes in As Cidades invisíveis by Italo Calvino and the possibility of experimenting the exchange of different urban realities on the internet. In order to develop this idea it seems adequate to create a website to promote this interchange of cities or the interchange of visions of cities all over the world from the point of view of web users through their statements, photos, sounds, impressions and any fragments that will express their personal readings. It will be possible not only to think their experience of city as well as investigating it from an individual and collective point of view, of the native and of the visitor, but also discuss new means of exchange of information, visual or verbal, in this specific work, about cities, provided by web technology which gets more and more available.

summary The paper is focused around a critical discussion of the digital representation and the architectural design process. Digital technology is now widely accepted and computers are causing a profound impact in the way reality and artificial objects are described and represented. Computers are now transforming skills, design processes, production processes and organizations. However, the evidence suggests that there are no fundamental changes in the architectural design process. It is acknowledged that the design process in architecture goes through representations and entails two altering phases: one generating tentative possibilities and hypothesis, and another of testing and evaluation. Based on this discussion a new way of using digital technology in architectural conception and design is suggested.

summary The goal of this paper is to define the processes that enable the simulation of an autonomous pedestrian’s journeys in confined spaces; and to determine their paths beginning with random processes under preset parameters in a generic fashion as well as doing so in a manner independent from walking movement. We present a conceptual model designed to generate pedestrian journeys, taking into account the focuses of attraction and their influence in the paths taken. In order to implement this model, we add to an architectural blueprint the elements necessary to recognize the geometric characteristics of the World (Limits, Focuses and Portals) that affect the displacements of pedestrians. These characteristics enable us to determine the paths to be taken in the World. The issues of the simulation (the position that each pedestrian occupies for unit of time) can be used by other applications, to generate animations or to verify critical situations.

summary The explosive growth of scientific visualization in the past 10 years demonstrate a consistent and tacit agreement among scientists that visualization offers a better representation system for displaying complex data than traditional charting methods. However, most visualization works have not been unable to exploit the full potential of visualization techniques. The reason may be that these attempts have been largely executed by scientists. While they have the technical skills for conducting research, they do not have the design background that would allow them to display data in easy to understand formats. This paper presents the architectural methodology, theory, technology and products that are being employed in an ongoing multidisciplinary research in anesthesiology. The project’s main goal is to develop a new data representation technology to visualize physiologic information in real time. Using physiologic data, 3-D objects are generated in digital space that represent physiologic changes within the body and show functional relationships that aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of critical events. Preliminary testing results show statistically significant reduction in detection times. The research outcome, potential, and recently received NIH grant supporting the team’s scientific methods all point to the contributions that architecture may offer to the growing field of data visualization.

summary Building of knowledge and the traditional methods to approach it are changed by new technologies. The coexistence of two cultures, one of them based on written text and the other multitextual, are presented as an interesting exploring field. Accordingly, improvement in building of design learning, “new logics of perception” and “new projectable logics, are the main challenges to be addressed in a Research - Action Programme in harmonious interaction between both cultures and their instruments (analogous and digitals). Recognizing the existence of fields teachers are not trained in, an interaction teacher - pupil in didactic strategies is considered to be necessary.
