title Compositional design of a generic design agent

summary This paper presents a generic architecture for a design agent, to be used in an Internet environment. The design agent is based on an existing generic agent model, and includes a refinement of a generic model for design, in which strategic reasoning and dynamic management of requirements are explicitly modelled. The generic architecture has been designed using the compositional development method DESIRE, and has been used to develop a prototype design agent for automated agent design.

summary To model a database that stores geo-indexed data or space, a diversity of models exists in the literature. In this article the models will be studied proposed by Michael F. Worboys, Peter Milne and S. A. Roberts and will be represented using OMT (Object Modelling Technique) of Rumbaugh. The models will be evaluated following a methodology based on the existence of a ideal model of reference against the one which to be able to contrast them. The created ideal pattern will be constituted in a new model for the design of space databases OxO.

summary Shapes are equal if the spatial relations between their parts areequal. But spatial relations are equal if shapes characterizing the relationare equal. This recursive nature of shape and shape relations isexamined. A repeated shape has distinct parts each equal and in one of aspecified set of spatial relations to another part. A symmetrical shapehas the same spatial relation to each part of some repeated shape.Repeated shapes are simple examples of generated shapes but can showintricate behaviour and indicate the problems of predicting spatialproperties in generative shapes.

title CNC tool path in terms of B-spline curves

summary We present an accurate and efficient method to generate a CNC tool path for a smooth free-form surface in terms of planar cubic B-spline curves which will be fed into afree-form curve interpolator. We assume the use of a three-axis CNC machine tool with a ball end-mill cutter. We first interpolate break points, which are generated bycomputing the offset surface-driving plane intersection curve reflecting the curvature, by a planar cubic B-spline curve. We then evaluate the maximum scallop height alonga scallop curve by computing the stationary points of the distance function between the scallop curve and the design surface. Furthermore, we compute the maximum pickfeed such that the maximum scallop height along a scallop curve coincides with the prescribed tolerance. Illustrative examples show the substantial improvements this methodachieves over conventional methods where the tool path consists of linear or circular paths.

summary Future tasks for the building trade in Germany will be more and more a combination of the fields of revitalization and new building projects. Prerequisite for computer-aided planing for existing buildings is both, the use of onsite computer-aided measurement and the integration of all specialists involved in the building process. Existing approaches for this problem are not yet satisfying. The aim of this research project is twofold: to design a practice-relevant software concept and to develop various prototypic systems, for a structured way of capturing and organizing building-related information about existing buildings in digital form. The research is oriented towards existing buildings, in particular residential and commercial buildings. This project is a special branch of SFB524. The project is founded by "Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG)".

summary Activities in the building industry in Germany concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new-build. A prerequisite for computer-aided planning in the context of existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer aided surveying techniques and the integration of all professional disciplines in an integrated information and communication system. Current approaches to these issues are unsatisfactory. Methods and techniques in renovation work are being investigated as part of ongoing research at the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (SFB524 - “Collaborative research center 524 „Materials and Structure in Revitalization of Buildings”). A sub-group (SFB524 - D2 „Planning-Relevant Digital Building Surveying and Information System”) is currently investigating the possibilities of computer-aided building surveying and of joint communcation platforms for engineering disciplines (www.uni-weimar.de/sfb: May 2001). The objective is the development of a general approach for the renovation of buildings. The paper discusses concepts and requirements for a computer-aided system supporting the entire surveying process from the initial site visit to its use in a CAD system.

summary For several years we have been using the metaphor of play to conceive and deliver our design teaching. We report here results of a qualitative evaluation study on the effectiveness of our approach. We used both a participant observer methodology and a formal survey to gather and interpret data from the classroom. The results show tentative support for a positive role for play in early design education and several insights into how to build play into the design classroom.

summary We have developed several deep cases based on actual and hypothetical built environments and have used these in a strongly student-centred instructional style. On reflection, our approach seems qualitatively different from norms in architecture schools and from other case-based learning practices. We introduce it here under the rubric of the Leitmotif Case, explain its structure and compare it with other approaches.
