title The Use of Tools in the Creation of Form: Frank (L. Wright & O. Gehry)
source Reinventing the Discourse - How Digital Tools Help Bridge and Transform Research, Education and Practice in Architecture [Proceedings of the Twenty First Annual Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture / ISBN 1-880250-10-1] Buffalo (New York) 11-14 October 2001, pp. 044-051
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2001.044
summary This paper is a study of shape, attempting to understand the effect of Computer Aided Architecture Drafting and Design on the Geometry of Form. This is a part of a larger question: When the tool of presentation changes, does the form generated change as well? The study is in two main parts: 1 Comparing two Guggenheim Museums. 2 Re-Modeling Bilbao Museum. The final questions are: why does form become more complex? How do architects use tools to obtain more complexity? What Computer Aided Architecture Design programs let architects achieve more complexity? For an architect, is the motivation to demonstrate a set of 3D geometric operations sufficient to generate complex assemblies, and are there other possible operations needed?

title SISTEMA WEB INTERACTIVO CON CATÁLOGO PSEUDO-TRIDIMENSIONAL DE RODUCTOS Y VÍDEO EN TIEMPO REAL (Interactive Web System with Pseudo-Three-Dimensional Catalogue of Places and Video in Real Time)
source SIGraDi biobio2001 - [Proceedings of the 5th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics / ISBN 956-7813-12-4] Concepcion (Chile) 21-23 november 2001, pp. 104-106
summary It has been designed and developed a system Web that has video in real time and an interactive product catalogue based on pseudo-three-dimensional models, that is to say, models that they pretend to be three-dimensional, but that in fact do not have geometry 3D properly in the memory, but of an appropriate composition according to the case of geometry 2D (image or any graph), that allows to see the model from several points of view and to consult additional information (weight, material, dimensions, etc.). They have been analyzed and proven the different formats from transmission of video and audio by Internet, studying all its parameters, until finding the optimal ones for this server. In comparison with the use of format VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) used commonly to put models 3D in the Web, this system that we have devised presents like advantages the low time of load, the high precision of the views of the object and the low cost of maintenance of the Web. On the other hand, one does not have the infinity of views and facility of manipulation of the VRML.

title The Project Planning of Urban Decongestion
source Van Leeuwen, J.P. and H.J.P. Timmermans (eds.) Developments in Design & Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning, Eindhoven: Eindhoven University of Technology, ISBN 90-6814-155-4, p. 77-92
summary This study introduces a methodology for the evaluation, among a set of possible plans and/or policies, of a transport system which could reduce the effects of the network congestion on an urban area. Hence it is proposed a procedure which contains a new element compared with the current methodologies that is the final user’s evaluation of the examined system by turning to the application of the contingent valuation method, a technique like stated preferences. The approach we propose is based on the necessity for a determination of an optimal solution to the urban congestion to be established on the politic acceptability by the final user. Solutions which result virtually feasible for a public administration both on a technique and economic point of view often meet hostility by individuals. Consequently, it would be interesting for policy makers to adopt a process of valuation which could let to understand the user’s sensitivity and hostility towards specific configurations of the system, chosen as solution to decongestion (traffic calming, roadpricing, auto-free zones) and consequently to make less unpleasant the strategy to be carried out to control congestion (Harrington et al., 2001). In this way, a user does not judge the implementation of a set of projects made by a decision-maker as imposition and he is willing to pay in order to fulfil the chosen scenario. Finally we describe an application of the proposed methodology relating the definition of the integrated transport system in the metropolitan area of Bari, chief town of Apulia.

source SIGraDi biobio2001 - [Proceedings of the 5th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics / ISBN 956-7813-12-4] Concepcion (Chile) 21-23 november 2001, pp. 127-130
summary The present work constitutes a description of the design and implementation process for the new University of Buenos Aires’s Internet Website. The developed stages and the establishment of the institutional subjects generated a system able to support the growth of a variable information structure. Our intention was to complement two instances: to represent the University like an institution and to incorporate services for the user. The dialogue between the two instances generated an architecture of information with an almost fixed content and another one totally variable, that allows the natural growth of the thematics and opens the doors towards the self-manage of content.

title The Modular Units of CAD/CAM Fabrication
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009 CD-Rom
summary After Frank O’Gehry’s completion of the fish sculpture in Barcelona, the technique of CAD/CAM fabrication has gradually matured. Designers could use computer to acquire the freedom of form without most restrictions. Typical CAD/CAM fabrication can precisely capture the sections of 3D (three-dimensional) freeform and output those contours into 2D (two-dimensional) structures by computer assistance (Kolarevic 2001; Groover and Emory 1984). In the procedure, due to the accurate output of frameworks, designers could realize the outlines of complicated forms in a low error way. After making frames, architects have to attach suitable skins on the structures according to different situations of form (Lim 2006). It is a traditional CAD/CAM fabrication which has established for a long time.

title Structural Composite Members in Architecture Fabricated by CAD/CAE/CAM Technology
source Harvard University
summary The doctoral research in this dissertation is aimed at exploring new materials and innovative methods for fabricating complex-shaped buildings, which have surfaced as a prevailing trend in architecture today. Over the past few years, the field of architecture has witnessed revolutionary changes in design. The recent completion of Frank O. Gehry's new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, brought unprecedented attention to complex-shaped, non-conventional designs and its influence on the global architectural trend has been immense. In following these latest trends, the author was drawn to the issues concerning construction materials and methods that are being currently adopted in realizing these complicated designs. It is perhaps inevitable that the traditional steel construction methods, suitable for use in the conventional linear shapes, face tremendous challenges and limitations in building such complex-shaped designs. In the author's opinion, the next step to go from here is to seek joint efforts between the architectural field and the engineering field to search for a new methodology which will best serve the contemporary design style. This research first focused on examining the problems that traditional methods pose for the new complex-shaped buildings. Paying attention to Gehry's recent projects, the author was able to identify major difficulties in association with representing and constructing these complicated shapes, mainly in terms of the relationship between the primary structure and the envelope surface. The second part of the research moved on to proposing a new alternative to the traditional methods, by utilizing polymer composite materials (PCM) as construction material and employing advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technologies. More specifically, the author has attempted to present effective theories in support of the two following ideas: (1) circular tubes made of PCM are the most promising alternative to regular steel members, especially steel tubes, to follow the envelope surface of the complex shaped building. (2) state-of-the-art CAD/CAE/CAM technologies are the most essential tools to achieve the geometrical and functional quality of the proposed new material. In the second phase, the primary focus of the quantitative approach was on fabricating an experimental model (1:1 scale prototype) called “ a unit of boundary structures”, the basic unit of structure system that wraps a complex-shaped building's entire territory . title Site pre-cast yard layout arrangement through genetic algorithms
source Automation in Construction 11 (1) (2002) pp. 35-46
summary The use of modular construction has gained wide acceptance in the housing sector. Standardized modular units are often pre-cast on site. The establishment of site pre-cast yard, in particular arranging the pre-cast facilities within the compound, presents real challenge to site management. This complex task is further aggregated with the involvement of several resources with different transport cost. A GA-model is developed for the search for a near optimal layout solution. The fitness function is to minimize the total transport cost for a pre-determined daily output. The use of the model is illustrated by an example. When compared with the best solution within the initial population, 18.45% reduction in cost for resources flow was achieved by the near optimal layout arrangement arrived at the 673rd trial. It is also suggested that the model can be extended to other layout problems such as warehouse and production line.

title Current work at CECA
source International Conference on Generative Art
summary The centre for environment computing and architecture continues to experiment with new ways to form, and this paper presents three recent projects from the MSc programme. The three projects all share underlying assumptions about the use of generative algorithms to constructform, using fractal decomposition, lindenmayer systems and the marching cubes algorithm respectively to construct three dimensional "architectural" objects. The data needed to drive the morphology however ranges from formal proportional systems and Genetic L systems programming through swarming systems to perceptive self organising neural nets. In all cases, the projects pose the question what is architectural form. While after Stanford Anderson (Anderson 66) we know it is simplistic to say that it is an automatic outcome of a proper definition of the brief, it is also difficult to accept that the form of a building is an entirely abstract geometrical object existing without recourse to social or contextual justification. In anattempt to resolve these issues we have turned to the study of systems and general system theory as a way of understanding the mechanics of emergence and morphogenesis generally, and the

summary In the field of Architecture and Building Construction is increasing the tendency to search information in the old construction handbooks to find more easily the best solutions to the recovery of ancient buildings: to make them easily accessible we are developing an “electronic handbook” by using the technologies related to Internet. The paper reports on M.I.C.R.A. (Manuale Informatizzato per la Codifica della Regola d’Arte), a WBI System able to allow different kind of users (from experts in the fields of Architecture and Building Construction to university students) to easily find the information stored in the old construction handbooks -edited since the 18th century and normally stored in different libraries around Europe- and to immediately compare them each other. The system information management and the data structuring are explained by describing the design strategies and the specific “research criteria” we have adopted to the development of the system.

title Boundary debates: Extensions from analog to digital spaces
source CAADRIA 2001 [Proceedings of the Sixth Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 1-86487-096-6] Sydney 19-21 April 2001, pp. 241-249
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2001.241
summary Our research focuses on the evaluation of digital space and its prospective use as a functional space for future architectural planning tasks. Through the existence of digital technologies the authors consider that architects will have to expose themselves to new - planning tasks, which are not comparable to traditional architectural duties. This requires us to rethink architectural terms and their meaning in digital space. It demands us to extend the borders within which we think, work and design. The paper presents exemplary projects that demonstrate the applicability and added value of these mergers as an extension of solid architectural buildings. Focus is laid onto digital architecture that either extends its analog counterpart by providing functionality that does not exist in the "real" world or which doesn¥t have an analog counterpart at all. The paper aims at the definition of new tasks for architects to be developed. It describes methods and strategies architects have to be aware of to be capable to offer an extended field of activity. Finally it presents exemplary projects which show the possible added value clients could gain from buildings to be established as mergers of analog and digital spaces.

summary Traditional narrative systems, such as literature, the cinema and the television, keep a linear design when developing a story, due to their own characteristics. Multimedia offers the possibility of developing a new narrative language. Multimedia fiction is based on the idea of working on a new medium, taking the previous ones as a starting point. In this new medium, the decisions taken by the user, will enable him to create his own version of the story. Work done in this field, have attempted to investigate and go deeper into these concepts.

summary Drawings are pre-figurative media for designers, though they are neither objective nor equivalent to what they represent. The progressive use of computer-graphics in the area of Morphology for Industrial Design does not eliminate hand-made renderings but it broadens the communication tools available. Each mode, and even its combination, has potentials and restrictions that make it suitable for different moments of the design process. Design’s greatest wealth lies in the integration -not in the dissolution- of what is different, so CAD’s images should not be the only ones to appear. What fascinates at first sight, tires if endlessly repeated.
