summary This project is aimed at developing an instrument to reach the city-net multidimensionality (flux /real-space) of Rosario city in Argentina. Both, an integral view and the view of the different information layers of the urban net are required. We decided the used of computers to determine a digital dynamic model. The tool proposed has to be useful not only in search and urban survey but also as a design instrument, to pre-view the urban interventions. Simultaneously this tool is needed to evaluate the urban project’s impact in the city through the passing time as well as to communicate future projects to government and to community all.

summary This paper presents the architectural process and products that are being employed in an ongoing multidisciplinary research in anesthesiology. The project’s goal is to develop a new data representation technology to visualize physiologic information in real time. Using physiologic data, 3-D objects are generated in digital space that represent physiologic changes and show functional relationships that aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of critical events. Preliminary testing results show statistically significant reduction in detection times. The research outcome, potential, and the NIH grant supporting the team’s scientific methods demonstrate the contributions that architecture offers to the growing field of data visualization.

summary This article seeks to disclose part of the results obtained with the development of the master dissertation. (DUARTE [2], 2000) The several approach forms between the computers and the process teaching/learning of architectural design were investigated in this work, standing out, close moment the edict of MEC that regulated the introduction of the computers in the architecture schools in Brazil. Ten Brazilian schools of architecture were researched, through questionnaires and visits, in which four approach forms were detected, that were understood more deeply with a study of cases, highlighting: methods, supports, components and the teaching process and the design process built by the student.

summary The Navigational Blocks project demonstrates a tangible user interface that facilitates retrieval of historical stories in a tourist spot. Orientation, movement, and relative positions of physical Blocks support visitor navigation and exploration in a virtual gallery. The Navigational Blocks system provides a physical embodiment of digital information through tactile manipulation and haptic feedback. The simple cubic form of the Blocks is easy to understand and therefore easy to use to manipulate complex digital information. Electromagnets embedded in the Blocks and wireless communication encourage users to quickly rearrange the Blocks to form different database queries.

summary Based on the latest didactic teaching theories, this project presents a critical analysis of dynamic educational practices, which have been actively utilized through the last decade by the department of research and instruction in the School of Architecture at the University of Buenos Aires. This work proposes a journey through the landmarks that recognize the impact of technology on teaching best practices, mainly contained in a technical course. It presents the didactic theories of Bruner (90), Perkins, Gardner (93), Burbules (2001), E. Litwin (2002) and others. Crucial representative work developed by students has been taken to introduce criteria and construct practical reflections to arrive at an enriching proposition.

title Integrating barcode and GIS for monitoring construction progress

summary This study focuses on developing an automated schedule monitoring system for precast building construction. Erection of prefabricated structural components is the major critical activity for precast building construction. An efficient lifting schedule and control plan can significantly reduce construction conflicts and project delay. In this research, the system ArcSched was developed to assist engineers in controlling and monitoring the erection process in a real time basis. ArcSched is composed of a Geographic Information System (GIS) integrated with a database management system. Through systematic monitoring of the construction process and representation of the erection progress in graphics and colors, the scheduled components for erection are repetitively tracked and well controlled to implement the lifting schedule as planned.

summary The accessibility of 3D Modelling software presents challenges in the delivery of education aimed at developing creativity. Despite opening up innovative avenues of artistic possibility, computer technologies are essentially two-dimensional, hard to master and may restrict creativity itself. This paper describes a curriculum designed to develop creativity within an Electronic Arts programme. A student-centred, experiential learning approach was taken, which challenged students to set personal objectives within set project constraints. Formal critique sessions allowed students to develop a critical perspective. Conclusions are drawn as to the applicability of the approach to other non-artistic areas.

The research project deals with the manufacturing of architectural models which use new technology, for thermal and lighting investigation and using one heliodon as means of building assessment. The models to be produced will be chosen from built examples of the Modern Architecture of the XX Century. Initially virtual models will be constructed and afterwards the models will be printed in 3D. Once the three dimensional models were built they will be examined in one heliodon to evaluate their thermal and light performance. Also the models will be used as means of calibrating the heliodon itself. Lately the models will be incorporate as building examples for projects museum.

summary Architects—like other designers—tend to think, know and work in a visual way. In design research, this way of knowing and working is highly valued as paramount to design expertise (Cross 1982, 2006). In case of architecture, however, it is not only a particular strength, but may as well be regarded as a serious weakness. The absence of non-visual features in traditional architectural spatial representations indicates how these are disregarded as important elements in conceiving space (Dischinger 2006). This bias towards vision, and the suppression of other senses—in the way architecture is conceived, taught and critiqued—results in a disappearance of sensory qualities (Pallasmaa 2005). Nevertheless, if architects design with more attention to non visual senses, they are able to contribute to more inclusive environments. Indeed if an environment offers a range of sensory triggers, people with different sensory capacities are able to navigate and enjoy it. Rather than implementing as many sensory triggers as possible, the intention is to make buildings and spaces accessible and enjoyable for more people, in line with the objective of inclusive design (Clarkson et al. 2007), also called Design for All or Universal Design (Ostroff 2001). Within this overall objective, the aim of our study is to develop haptic design parameters that support architects during design in paying more attention to the role of haptics, i.e. the sense of touch, in the built environment by informing them about the haptic implications of their design decisions. In the context of our study, haptic design parameters are defined as variables that can be decided upon by designers throughout the design process, and the value of which determines the haptic characteristics of the resulting design. These characteristics are based on the expertise of people who are congenitally blind, as they are more attentive to non visual information, and of professional caregivers working with them. The parameters do not intend to be prescriptive, nor to impose a particular method. Instead they seek to facilitate a more inclusive design attitude by informing designers and helping them to think differently. As the insights from the empirical studies with people born blind and caregivers have been reported elsewhere (Authors 2010), this paper starts by outlining the haptic design parameters resulting from them. Following the classification of haptics into active, dynamic and passive touch, the built environment unfolds into surfaces that can act as “movement”, “guiding” and/or “rest” plane. Furthermore design techniques are suggested to check the haptic qualities during the design process. Subsequently, the paper reports on a focus group interview/workshop with professional architects to assess the usability of the haptic design parameters for design practice. The architects were then asked to try out the parameters in the context of a concrete design project. The reactions suggest that the participating architects immediately picked up the underlying idea of the parameters, and recognized their relevance in relation to the design project at stake, but that their representation confronts us with a sensory paradox: although the parameters question the impact of the visual in architectural design, they are meant to be used by designers, who are used to think, know and work in a visual way.

summary This research work has as its main aim exploring a new digital designing process. This new way of creating spaces, known as ‘Architecture of data’ entails choosing any event of the everyday world, and through a process, generating either a real or virtual space. In this particular case, the chosen event is the music. Several melodies, some of them famous, others especially composed for this project, come to existence as original spaces. For each composition, many musical instruments are played, each of which is part of the final space. In doing so, new alternative designing processes emerge. This processes build non conventional spaces that might outline a whole new architecture. Different fields of knowledge, namely architecture, music, maths and computing sciences had to be brought together in order to achieve the present work.

summary This is a research project in progress sponsored by the Universidad de Belgrano; it is to be completed by the end of 2001. The work comprises the observation of design processes done by students using manual and digital means following the same phases (study of the context and program, parti alternatives, fixation of a general scheme, formal and material development). Each of these phases is tackled by students according to their preferences, availability of equipment and degree of training in the use of digital media. An evident drawback for students is that the possiblities of testing design alternatives are reduced because of low expertise in representation. It is our intention to develop know-how about the use of this mixture of media in the most appropriate way for a design assignment, like the one we have for the use of graphic representations, study models, etc. We should be able to describe in detail the relations between traditional and digital representation considering both as means for reaching a more complete knowledge of the object we are designing. Thus we can evaluate the possibilities of articulation between both systems and the best way to exploit these relations for didactical ends.

This paper gives an insight into an ambitious project to construct a 2000 year historical chronicle of Glasgow – the city at the heart of the Industrial Revolution in Northern Europe. The multimedia document which holds the chronicle draws from a huge range of paperbased resources and pulls together contributions from experts in many disparate fields. A significant characteristic of the chronicle is the use of “place” in the telling of the story. This has been achieved by sophisticated merging of artistic impressions, digital terrain modelling and aerial photography.

summary In the ever-changing “new economy”, buildings are among the few capital goods that are actually left. The Construction Industry drives a very high level of resources, marking the paths of the economy. It is, however, a non-integrated process, with few or none sinergies and with a relatively ambiguous relationship with technology. Moreover, we architects have limited ourselves the role we play, concentrating more in representation than in the work as a whole. The proposal wants to conceive our work as a long-term Strategic Alliance between several actors around the building: Customers / Manufacturers / Vendors / Architects / Specialty Engineers / Builders / Contractors / Managers / Supporters / Users, and so on We are facing a historic opportunity to clarify the relationship of our Industry with technology, allowing it to gain its true dimension on this century. Besides, this will re-define the role of the architect in the Industry: we will evolve from designers, project-oriented, to be creators, owners and managers of “Virtual Buildings” that manage, coordinate and give value to the building as an integrated process, and co-exist with it along its lifecycle.
