title VIDI: A Lightweight Protocol Between Visualization Systems and Digital Libraries

summary Achieving interoperability between digital libraries and visualization tools is a difficult problem. To solve this problem, a version of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting called VIDI is proposed. It is a lightweight protocol, which contains only 5 request verbs -- Identify, ListMetadataFormats, ListVisdataFormats, ListTransformers, and RequestResultSet. It is extended from the OAI protocol, which enables its simplicity and wider acceptability. It is flexible, which avoids a rigid architecture in implementation. It is general, so it can apply to all kinds of Visualization Systems and Digital Libraries. But most importantly, it reaches our goal of enabling operability between Visualization Systems and Digital Libraries. The protocol design and implementation details are given. Two prototype systems are implemented to demonstrate the above features. Implementation details are given about ENVISION-ODL and ENVISION-MARIAN. Analysis, evaluation, and conclusions reinforce the discussion of the benefits of VIDI.

summary Bases de datos, Sistemas y Redes 134The purpose of this report is to present the achievements obtained in the use of the technologies of information andcommunication in the architecture, by means of the construction of a database to register the information on the modernarchitecture of the city of Maracaibo from 1920 until 1990, in reference to the constructions located in 5 of Julio, Sectorand to the most outstanding planners for its work, by means of the representation of the same ones in digital format.The objective of this investigation it was to elaborate a database for the registration of the information on the modernarchitecture in the period 1920-1990 of Maracaibo, by means of the design of an automated tool to organize the it datesrelated with the buildings, parcels and planners of the city. The investigation was carried out considering three methodologicalmoments: a) Gathering and classification of the information of the buildings and planners of the modern architectureto elaborate the databases, b) Design of the databases for the organization of the information and c) Design ofthe consultations, information, reports and the beginning menu. For the prosecution of the data files were generated inprograms attended by such computer as: AutoCAD R14 and 2000, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and MicrosoftAccess 2000, CorelDRAW V9.0 and Corel PHOTOPAINT V9.0.The investigation is related with the work developed in the class of Graphic Calculation II, belonging to the Departmentof Communication of the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and Design of The University of the Zulia(FADLUZ), carried out from the year 1999, using part of the obtained information of the works of the students generatedby means of the CAD systems for the representation in three dimensions of constructions with historical relevance in themodern architecture of Maracaibo, which are classified in the work of The Other City, generating different types ofisometric views, perspectives, representations photorealistics, plants and facades, among others.In what concerns to the thematic of this investigation, previous antecedents are ignored in our environment, and beingthe first time that incorporates the digital graph applied to the work carried out by the architects of “The Other City, thegenesis of the oil city of Maracaibo” carried out in the year 1994; of there the value of this research the field of thearchitecture and computer science. To point out that databases exist in the architecture field fits and of the design, alsoweb sites with information has more than enough architects and architecture works (Montagu, 1999).In The University of the Zulia, specifically in the Faculty of Architecture and Design, they have been carried out twoworks related with the thematic one of database, specifically in the years 1995 and 1996, in the first one a system wasdesigned to visualize, to classify and to analyze from the architectural point of view some historical buildings of Maracaiboand in the second an automated system of documental information was generated on the goods properties built insidethe urban area of Maracaibo. In the world environment it stands out the first database developed in Argentina, it is the database of the Modern andContemporary Architecture “Datarq 2000” elaborated by the Prof. Arturo Montagú of the University of Buenos Aires. The general objective of this work it was the use of new technologies for the prosecution in Architecture and Design (MONTAGU, Ob.cit). In the database, he intends to incorporate a complementary methodology and alternative of use of the informationthat habitually is used in the teaching of the architecture. When concluding this investigation, it was achieved: 1) analysis of projects of modern architecture, of which some form part of the historical patrimony of Maracaibo; 2) organized registrations of type text: historical, formal, space and technical data, and graph: you plant, facades, perspectives, pictures, among other, of the Moments of the Architecture of the Modernity in the city, general data and more excellent characteristics of the constructions, and general data of the Planners with their more important works, besides information on the parcels where the constructions are located, 3)construction in digital format and development of representations photorealistics of architecture projects already built. It is excellent to highlight the importance in the use of the Technologies of Information and Communication in this investigation, since it will allow to incorporate to the means digital part of the information of the modern architecturalconstructions that characterized the city of Maracaibo at the end of the XX century, and that in the last decades they have suffered changes, some of them have disappeared, destroying leaves of the modern historical patrimony of the city; therefore, the necessity arises of to register and to systematize in digital format the graphic information of those constructions. Also, to demonstrate the importance of the use of the computer and of the computer science in the representation and compression of the buildings of the modern architecture, to inclination texts, images, mapping, models in 3D and information organized in databases, and the relevance of the work from the pedagogic point of view,since it will be able to be used in the dictation of computer science classes and history in the teaching of the University studies of third level, allowing the learning with the use in new ways of transmission of the knowledge starting from the visual information on the part of the students in the elaboration of models in three dimensions or electronic scalemodels, also of the modern architecture and in a future to serve as support material for virtual recoveries of some buildings that at the present time they don’t exist or they are almost destroyed. In synthesis, the investigation will allow to know and to register the architecture of Maracaibo in this last decade, which arises under the parameters of the modernity and that through its organization and visualization in digital format, it will allow to the students, professors and interested in knowing it in a quicker and more efficient way, constituting a contribution to theteaching in the history area and calculation. Also, it can be of a lot of utility for the development of future investigation projects related with the thematic one and restoration of buildings of the modernity in Maracaibo.

summary The project we are presenting is based on our professional experience in virtual interface design of multimedia, in CD-ROM and Web format, which has been developed in our design workshops. Our project methodology has one common basis: The metaphorical and conceptual argument for the creation of virtual environments is supported by the observation of the physical environment of human beings and the objects that surround them.The research we have carried out is aimed at establishing a project methodology for interface design based on the hypothesis that observation and knowledge of the relationship between man and environment (architectural and urban), man and object (literacy and symbolic representation) is the basis for the design of recognizable virtual environments. These are functional, representative and efficient elements for the achievement of communicative objectives of such virtual environments. The project reference that supports our research is the outcome of academic and professional project analysis. These projectswill support the demonstration of the suggested methodology which, in the course of the presentation, will be applied to a project to be developed and whose metaphorical basis is the city of Valparaiso.The objective is to use the urban environment as a metaphorical argument for the design of a virtual environment for the Cultural and Historical Registry of Literature, Plastic Arts and Chilean Architecture where Valparaiso has served as reference, source of inspiration and object of study. Together with the methodological project, we will present the instruments that have been created for reference analyis with the purpose of interface design and in order to facilitate a mechanism to evaluate interface design projects.

summary This paper present the main results obtained by the development of the Artemis Project ”Design and Evaluation of Residential Patterns in the Mediterranan Region appropiate to sustainable development of environmentally deteriorated rural areas” 4th European Framework Program. Call ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE . ENV4-CT97-0656.) As results of the project an Integrated Landscape Assessment Model (AIAM) was created. AIAM is a resource modelling system focusing on the generation of a decision support system application oriented to provide criteria in order to evaluate effects and to optimise location of low density residential settlements. The Model includes a Landscape multicriteria analysis merged with spatial analysis tools set in a GIS Environment. The A.I.A.M. provides data structures, user interface components, and output mechanism witch allows the user to apply the knowledge acquired for Artemis Project. One of the main goals of the A.I.A.M is to give a landscape view of the territory including variables that are usually not considered in planning and environmental impact assessment processes. Also the models gives a sustainable support both to planner and designers projects. A.I.A.M. gives the data structure to define a residential patterns, the parameters through which a pattern is adequately described. This pattern definition allows comparison between the one’s of the reference area and so, extract conclusions about divergence between them.

title Preparing a multimedia-based gallery for institute of higher learning: A case study of Malaysian experience

summary While the majority of medium and small sized institutions still rely on their physical or traditional content, it has been observed a pre-disposition usually by major, recently founded or contemporary art institutions to display net-based projects (Buiani, 2001) and to some extent established as a permanent display. This changing of exhibitions has penetrated in many Asian galleries and as a result many schools trying to re-position and present in such a way that it can be easily changed and adapted to host multimedia, Internet, interactive and computer-based content. This funded research project investigates the functions of gallery in IHL in Malaysia. A triangulated study was conducted to understand the potentials and issues faced by galleries in public and private universities focusing on design schools that include art and design, and architecture. This research starts with the understanding of gallery design theories. It is then followed by a qualitative method survey to all galleries in the IHL. This research continues with an in depth study and a survey on Electronic Gallery (e-Gallery), Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM), Multimedia University (MMU) to understand between the theories and design ideas. A set of questionnaires was developed based on Mathews (1991) and Stewart’s (2002) principles and guidelines on research methods and distributed to visitors throughout a period of time consisting of open-ended, close-ended, Likert Summated Rating Scale and Multiple-choice. This involved a controlled group of visitors comprises students and staff of the faculty. The results of these studies will be used as a reference to further conduct a wider scope of galleries worldwide towards designing a multimedia-based gallery framework for Institute of Higher Learning.

summary Information Technology (IT) is impacting architecture dramatically in process and form. Often thecurrent transformation of architecture is difficult to analyze and frequently we see confusion and anxietyregarding uncertainties for the future of the architect as designer and project leader. The currentpotentiality for new exotic form (i.e. product) is mesmerizing; however, in the current context, lessobvious issues and pertinent questions are emerging for the profession. What is the mission of theprofession? What will keep us relevant in the mist of the new global society?In this paper, we will take an evolutionary perspective of technology in architecture and draw parallelsbetween the Renaissance, which is the genesis of the modern architect, and the contemporary state ofarchitecture. The modern architect was birthed during the Renaissance where we see the retraction ofthe architect from the building site and separation from direct involvement in the building process.Communications technology (i.e. representation in the form of free-hand drawings, mechanical 2Dorthographic drawings and 3D perspectives) enabled the decomposition of the master builder into threecomponents (i.e. artist-designer, practicing_architect, and builder). Thus, we see technology enable thedenigration and ultimate dissolution of the centuries old craftsman guilds and the master builder. Thetechnology evolution of “drawings” enabled monumental change in the process of architecture over thepast five hundred years. The fission of the master builder, enabled by “drawings”, resulted in disparatefactions which are the forerunners of the modern day litigious design-bid-build project delivery. We nowincreasingly see a return to the fusion of design and building where often the architect is not the projectmanager or leader. Thus, the question looms, will the 21st century architect lead or be led, and whatare the ramifications for the profession?The historical Master Builder is re-emerging as a dynamically networked team of design andconstruction knowledge specialists. Bi-lateral knowledge exchange, enhanced with emerging IT, isoccurring between owners, managers, architects, design specialists, engineers, builders and machines.Technology is disrupting architecture, resulting in increasing specialization and compressed timeframes, and may require reevaluation of the role of the architect as project-leader "integrativegeneralist"or "design-specialist".Conclusively, the concept of ‘cybernetic architecture’ is proposed as an IT reference framework. Failureto appropriately respond to societal evolution, driven by technology, could result in the loss ofprofessional status for the modern architect. Herein lies our dilemma, or opportunity, depending on therole choice of the modern architect.

title The Side Effect of a Generative Experiment

summary This paper discusses the issue expressed in the call for the Generative Art 2002 conference that says: "GA is identifiable as one of the most advanced approaches in creative and design world." In this paper the value of Generative Art for the art, science and design worlds is described in the reference to a generative experiment. The experiment has been conducted in industrial environment with the aim of defining possibilities for natural interaction of humans with machines. In specific, the experiment examined an option for visual adaptation in accordance to user feedback. In the context of the experiment's outcome the issue of recognizability of Generative Art values is discussed. Generative Art can be identified but is not widely recognized as "one of the most advanced approaches in creative and design world". What makes it difficult for designers to switch to generative thinking and accept immediately Generative Art as the possible way of advancing traditional design methods? And what makes it promising to keep searching for ways of application of Generative Art in contemporary design? Some possible answers, proposed in this paper, aim at contributing to the discussion about the changing role of artists and designers in the contemporary society.

title Shapes, Numbers, Perception: Aspects and Dimensions of the Design-Performance Space

summary The design-performance space denotes a virtual space that can be constructed based on discretized design variables and performance indicators. For an n-dimensional design-performance space, n = d + p,whereby d = the number of discrete design variables, and p = the number of discrete performance indicators. Once constructed, this space can be visualized and used by the designer to explore the relationship between design variables and corresponding performance attributes. We present, for the building design domain, an approach to generation and exploration of the design-performance space. In this approach, an initial design is used to generate a set of alternative designs that collectively constitutethe design space. One way of doing this relies on the "scalarization" of design variables. The scalarization leads to the representation of a building as a point in a d-dimensional design space. Each coordinate ofsuch a space accommodates a salient (semantic or geometric) design variable. Subsequently, the entire corpus of design alternatives is subjected to performance modeling. Based on the modeling results, an ndimensionaldesign-performance space is constructed. We specifically address the potential for and limitations of describing building geometry in terms of a continuous scalar dimension of the design space. We introduce the concept of "Relative Compactness", which is derived by comparing the volume tosurface area ratio of a shape to that of a (compact) reference shape with the same volume. We present the results of an empirical study, which shows a significant correlation between the numeric values of relativecompactness and the subjective evaluation of the compactness of architectural shapes.

title Creative Multimedia: The Commodity of the 21st Century

summary The Digital Revolution has turned individuals, institutions, and businesses into a new form of collective wealth and prosperity. This revolution has effected a creativity burst that goes far beyond an increase in the number of those involved in design tasks and challenges, in both professional and amateur settings. The Internet in particular are not only distributing media but most importantly it is a reference platform in which ideas, talents and capabilities emerge and are refined, enhanced and perfected through the inspiring interplay of collaboration and competition. This paper briefly examines the relationship between art and science through the ages, discusses their recent re-convergence, and examines their current relationship via real world applications and productions. The study of such productions, their successes and the impact they have had in the marketplace based on designs and aesthetics instead of advanced technology appear to support the argument. It also highlights the need for accelerating this process and suggests that the re-convergence is a result of new technologies adopted by practitioners that include the effective visualisation and communication of ideas and concepts. These elements are widely found today in multimedia, which offers increased power and new abilities to both scientists and designers. This paper also highlights the need for the employment of emerging computer-based interactive technologies which will enhance the design process, better decision-making, increase the quality of communication and collaboration, lessen the errors and reduce the design cycles. A Multimedia Palette is proposed as a design platform to expose one's imagination, creative and innovative ideas, and provide a richer and more creative multimedia content design and development. Following encouraging first round results, an expanded version of the suggested platform has been experimented in the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University for the last 5 years, in integrating design and computer skills in the teaching and learning projects.

summary Our research focuses on how to create new types of computer tools, which aims to help early architectural design phase. Therefore we constructed a prototype named “kaleidoscope “. This system is based on the notion that architects use some external references as a strategy to construct new project ideas and that it is possible to organize this referential knowledge.This article presents four guide-lines which allowed the development of the first version of “kaleidoscope” system. As we succeed in broadening and deepening our knowledge - theoretical and empirical – about computers, wediscover that in large part their behavior is governed by simple general laws, that what appeared as complexity in the computer program was to a considerable extent complexity of the environment to which the program was seeking to adapt its behavior.

In particular, we address issues of infrastructure, faculty and curriculum. At the same time, the paper outlines relationships between prevailing tendencies both in high schools as well as professional offices. In this way we manage to present a consistent vision in which academia and profession articulate IT resources responding to their own agendas. This analysis is illustrated bymeans of the actual conditions under which the School of Architecture at Texas A&M University operates. The paper ends making reference to the challenge of globalization in academia and the profession in the 21st century.

summary Hipermedia lead to a non- linear organization of information, where the user decides the path to follow and the relations among the different information blocks. They constitute starting points for establishing both social and sin gu lar “sense genealogies”. Sense production by means of mutimedia access and the resignifying of information correspond, within the Theory of Science Didactics, to the concept of thematic decentering. This concept refers to fl exibility and transference modes, opposed toseg men ta tion and which enable to explore, approach and relate different topics and complexities. It is supposed to generate more cultivated individuals by broadly linking science, technology and art. Within this theoretic frame work, the work presents the de vel op ment of a hipermedium on the Villa Victoria Cultural Center, which aims at a didactic treat ment of cultural spaces as object of knowl edge.

summary This paper describes the linking of Idea Space/E3dAD, a system that captures and interprets the architect’s ideas with DYNAMO, a dynamic memory of design cases, to support concept development in architectural design. So far, a major obstacle for the breakthrough of digital case bases like DYNAMO has been the separateness of these tools from the architect’s working environment. Having to leave this environment to consult a case base inconveniently interrupts the design process. The remedy proposed in this paper was inspired by the Shift+F7 shortcut in Ms Word. Just like this shortcut allows authors to look up synonyms in a thesaurus without having to leave the text, linking Idea Space to DYNAMO enables architects to trigger case retrieval ‘en passant’, that is during the very act of designing.

summary The goal of our research is to develop a computer system that supports an architect in the early phase of the design process. We envision a system that aids in three ways. It helps the architect in maintaining an overview of the development of his or her ideas over time. It shows the current state of the process in a restructured representation. It supports and stimulates the generation of new associations whenever required.The difficulty lies in linking up with the rich information structure of the architect and the various cognitive processes he or she uses to handle this information structure. The consequence is that the system must be able to include all design content, to interpret it, but not to restrict the architect in his or her creativity. Moreover, the system should stimulate creativity.We conducted an experiment to get better insight in what the architect provides as input for the system in the early phase of the design process. Several difficulties have been encountered, which we discuss along with possible solutions for managing the data. The system makes use of user-defined relations and system-defined relations. With these relations we can represent the design content in a comprehensive network that we call the Idea Space. This Idea Space is the basis for above-mentionedfunctionality. In this paper we focus on the (textual) input provided by the architect. In order to get better insight in the ideas and relations made by the architect, in other words the input for the system, we conducted an experiment. Several difficulties were encountered, which we discuss along with possible solutions for managing the data.

summary The benefit of linking digital data with geographical maps has always been underestimated in the spatial planning of Flanders.Today, the planning methods in Flanders have evolved from a static land-use planning to a dynamic, more flexible planning: spatialstructure planning. The general idea is to come to a consensus between the different fields that have a need for land occupation.Understanding ones needs, it should be easier to make decisions based upon a mutual insight of problems and opportunities regardingspatial planning. How does one examine spatial structure plans, problems and opportunities using digital information? All differentfields have their own methods of gathering spatial information and storing it digitally, what results into a large amount of data. Thispaper describes the use of these data in a spatial planning process: the conditions in which to use databases, how to link different datato spatial maps and how to work with overlays in order to formulate conclusions regarding spatial planning. Last but not least, wehave worked out a way to import GIS-data in non-GIS-programs in order to produce attractive charts that can ‘sell’ spatial planningideas to the public. The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of using digital information in spatial planningand the necessity to have a constant dialogue between spatial planners and GIS-experts in order to make models that are suitable forspatial planning.

summary We are convinced that an interactive design process involving engineers and architects will create values to a project. Looking back there have been some obstacles, like a week’s time for exchange of drawings with traditional postal services; manual calculation methods, which could not be spoiled on loose grounds like architect’s sketches; different media – architect’s drawings and engineer’s numbers in tables; attitudes and traditional roles, implemented already in education. Today most of these obstacles can be overcome and we have made a test. We have used ArchiCad by Graphisoft and FEM-design by SKANSKA IT Solutions to test to make an interactive design. Our conclusions are that exchange of information, drawings and other documents is more or less routine in praxis, and it works almost instantly. Computers make calculation faster and easier for the engineer. Though we would wish to have software which manages to do more rapid estimations. Even simulations such as of loads on a structure are practically possible. By using model based CAD the data can be used for transferring quantities for calculations as well as visualization of the design as a platform for collaborate analysis. The technique is developed and usable but to gain acceptance and make use of it is also a matter of attitudes and of application activities in education.

summary This article explores the correlation between the language of cinema and the architectural spatial discourse of power depicted in the film Equilibrium (Wimmer, 2002). This connection is examined through a discursive approach to communication studies. To analyze a specific sequence from the chosen film, a two-stage multimodal analysis was conducted. Initially, the visual analysis method proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006) designed for the representation of social actors, was employed. Subsequently, in the second stage, sociological and conceptual associations were drawn from the diverse semiotic resources identified in the first phase. The analyzed case revealed several intertextual relationships, among them; Hitler's figure recontextualized as an exemplifying archetype; the panopticon concept representing the spatial power dynamics; the presence of the German zeppelin symbolizing dominance and spreading propaganda through loudspeakers; the religious iconographic influence, its forms and symbols, contributing to a cultural identity inseparable from the history of the Western world.

summary From 1959 to 1990, East St. Louis, Illinois deteriorated from an “All-American City” to a national symbol of urban blight. Located on the Mississippi River, the East St. Louis of today faces severe economic, social, and environmental problems. Nearly onequarter of the city’s work force is unemployed and about 40 percent of families are living below the poverty level. But East St. Louis was not always a distressed community. With strong ties to St. Louis and the surrounding region, East St. Louis onceflourished as the country’s second busiest railroad hub. Powerful economic and socio-political forces, as well as unfortunate historical circumstance, propelled the city into a downward spiral that drastically decreased the quality of life in East St. Louis. This paper presents the digital re-construction of the buildings and the analyses of the historical aspects of the housing construction and types in this area. Furthermore, it reports the survey and assessment of the quality of building stocks based on therevitalization plan that will provide some guidelines and suggestions for improvement, stability, and future needs.

title Free-form thick layer object manufacturing technology for large-sized physical models

summary Large-sized free-form objects of different materials are widely used in various industrial applications. Currently, layered rapid prototyping technologies are not suitable for the fabrication of this kind of objects, due to the necessity of a large number of layers and the limitations in size. This paper reports a novel approach of layered manufacturing that is more appropriate for the fabrication of these large objects. A method of thick-layered object manufacturing is presented, which is based on a higher order approximation of the shape and application of a flexible curved cutting tool. The method allows the production of physical prototypes, which need little or no finishing. In order to meet the designer's intend, as closely as possible, some feasible system characteristics are introduced. The process is ordered in a sequential way and provides a highly automated process. A hierarchical decomposition of the CAD geometry takes place into components, segments, layers and sectors, based on morphological analysis. This method enables the manufacturing and the re-assembly of the parts to produce the physical prototypes without affecting the requested functionality. Due to the possibility of obtaining multiple solutions in the physical model, much attention must be paid to the efficiency of the process.

summary The present paper describes an innovative design education system tried out at two different architecture schools in Brazil, with opposite approaches to the use of CAD. The experimental courses had two main goals: (1) to explore the use of logical operations in design, such as symmetry, recursion, parameterization, and combinatorial analysis, and (2) to apply these techniques with the use of the computers, using CAD not only as a representational tool, but rather as an explorative, customizable and programmable design aide for the creative process. The experiments resulted in a number of interesting compositions, design projects and programs, and assessment questionnaires revealed a real change in students’ attitude towards the use of CAD in architecture.
