title An accelerated subcontracting and procuring model for construction projects

summary Considering the characteristics of highly specialized corporation in the construction industry, it's crucial to select appropriate subcontractors to implement specific subprojects. In this research, the overall subcontracting supply chain of a construction project is considered as a global procurement system and an optimal combination of subcontractors can be obtained within this system. Combining the quick response mechanism of information technology with portfolio theory in financial management, an integrated XML (eXtensible Markup Language) of Accelerated Subcontracting And Procuring (ASAP) model was proposed. The ultimate goal of this study is not only to develop a web-based decision support system for general contractors to accurately decide an appropriate trade-off between risk and profit for different combinations of subcontractors, but to take the subcontracting and procuring process into re-engineering through omnipresent Internet. summary Information technology has become so powerful that what is conventionally called CAD might evolve to iAD (Internet Aided Design) (Zhou 2000). For Internet applications in the AEC industry, most of the efforts and success have been concentrated on project management and collaboration, while in the design and engineering consulting area, limited progress has been made. At the same time, contemporary development has not changed the nature of the fragmentation of the AEC industry. Based on previous research of surveys of development of Internet applications in the AEC industry (Zhou 2001), and the proposal of conceptual model of Internet-based engineering consulting in architecture (Zhou2002), we try to apply these theories and concepts into a specified area, steel construction consulting for architects. In previous research, first of all, we defined the contents and scope of steel construction consulting and their potential application. Second, we proposed a solid working model covering structure organization, audience, services provided and technology. In this research, a web-based application will be out by prototyped by conducting a conceptual design consulting in steel structure in order to show the whole process of how this Internet-based consulting model works.

summary Cost estimating of a construction project at its early stage is considered to be very important task since it will be used as a base to commit or otherwise not to commit funds to that project. Preparation of a reliableand realistic preliminary estimate to aid the decision makers to commit funds for a specific project is a complicated assignment. Traditional methods and operations produced unsatisfactory aid due to lack ofaccuracy especially in the pre-design stage of a project. This participates in the increase of percentage of bankruptcy in the construction industry, which has dramatically climbed up and ranked as 15 percent of thewhole bankruptcies claimed in Canada (Statistic Canada 1998). This paper presents a methodology for developing and a Web-based model to automate preliminary cost estimates for hi-rise buildings. This is achieved by integrating a database with design drawings in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. The model will automatically generate preliminary estimates after modifying a 3D CAD drawing. It provides the user the option to visualize and simulate the drawing and its cost data through VR environment. Having done that, it will allow owners, architects and cost engineers to view a constructed building project, change its geometric objects and shapes, and accordingly generate a new conceptual cost estimate.

summary This research, after analyzing the Urban Development Approval Process in its functionalities and methodologies, is showing the key points at which the process might be supported by new computer technologies, and it establishes a web-based Collaborative Interactive Digital Model (CollABITA Model) that relates and facilitates the graphical representation of the urban design process with some elements of the methodological approach. The CollABITA Model will dramatically facilitate the idea of broadening public participation, and indirectly by this, also collaboration. This new web-based support tool, is focusing on how new Informative Computer Technologies can be used in order to have a more co-operative design process. By utilizing the enormous potential of Internet for informing the process, and software for visualizing its products, the Model will provide an effective support, which will be able to deliver information in various forms to the Designers, Developers, Decision Makers, Agencies and the final user (the Citizens). The Model is concerned with the big challenge of supporting the urban design approval process itself, by exploring different kind of visualizations and communication tools, rather than producing a guide for carrying out the design. CollABITA Model is based on the existent framework structure of the extranet tool already available. Then, more then those, CollABITA Model will try to solve, by adding technical and collaborative functionalities, those issues that are characteristics in the urban design process and that are not jet solved by using one of the software .

summary Several commercial real-estate sites provide listings of available commercial property on the Internet. These listings are generated on the basis of selection criteria as floor area, price and location. Despite the obvious utility of the listings and their promise for the transaction process and market transparency, one third of commercial realestate listing sites went bankrupt in 2001 and 2002. To provide an explanation for the failure, 63 commercial real-estate sites were analysed and classified into three basic business models: the Research / Information model, the Marketing model and the Transaction model. A common success factor for all models is the functionality of the site, especially interaction between the user and the available information. The paper proposes that the transfer of existing architectural representations, information-processing instruments and decision-taking tools is an essential component of future development towards integrated services that accompany a building throughout its lifecycle. This transfer amounts to (1) the addition of building and contextual information from standard documentation and online information services, (2) the derivation and coherent description of programmatic requirements database, and (3) advanced user interaction with building information.

summary The web offers the means to reach out to potential customers and clients. It enables the establishment of a communication link that allows designers to probe the preferences of their customers, and potential clients to be heard in the design process. It can also serve as a communication platform for customers and other interested parties to share and express ideas and concerns. Opening up the design process to future stakeholders and other concerned parties is particularly accommodating in the aspiration to aconsensus model, as is the case in Dutch architecture. In this paper, we present an example of a Dutch residential development project in which the web served to reach out to potential clients. It involved visitors through a sequence of design “games” in the site planning process. Resulting data were analyzed and provided to the design team, and consequent design decisions found their way into subsequent games. By supporting additional communication among visitors and users, including the design team, visitors would be able to assess their own ideas against others, potentially improving the overall quality of contributions. Such support was envisioned though not implemented in the example. In this paper, we present the actual communication model adopted and consider its extension to support a virtual community for design communication with interested clients in a residential development project.

summary The study of precedents plays an important role in design and design education. Architecture students prepare analyses of prominent precedents with respect to various criteria. Such design analyses arerepresented and communicated through abstractions. Collections of these abstractions are stored, related, managed, and presented in digital environments. Such web-based environments can serve as anextensible library of design precedent analyses. The use of an extensive library by a collection of students requires a flexible and extensible information model for relating and integrating the various contributions. We propose a methodology that establishes an information model for digital architectural analysis environments. This model facilitates a rich information structure of abstraction entities and their relationships, both structural and semantic, offering increased value for accessing and browsing this information. Specifically, a rich information structure allows one to access the information from alternative views to those that are expressed by the individual abstractions. In this paper, we start bydiscussing precedent-based learning, and describe the abstraction model currently used for precedent documentation and analysis. We then present our methodology for achieving a rich information structure. We end the paper with a description of an implementation of this methodology as anarchitectural analysis construction and presentation environment for a second year design studio.

summary Much knowledge in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is experience-basedand tacit. Nevertheless, the typical strategy for knowledge management is focused on computer-basedapproaches for capturing and disseminating explicit knowledge. AEC firms have been successful atcollecting and storing explicit information in enterprise databases, but they are poor at knowledgeretrieval and exchange. Consequently, AEC professionals find it difficult to reuse core experts’knowledge for highly knowledge-intensive AEC activities. This situation calls for a method fordisseminating tacit knowledge from experts’ brains to achieve higher quality AEC projects.The primary purpose of this paper is to set a theoretical foundation for clarifying the contribution ofexperts’ tacit knowledge in the AEC industry. The secondary purpose is to describe the concept forprototype software, Dynamic Knowledge Map, that can assist in the reuse of experts’ tacit knowledge.Dynamic Knowledge Map is a Web-based knowledge navigator that searches for experts and facilitatescommunication with those experts by using internet technology. Higher performance levels theoreticallycan be achieved while accelerating the knowledge transfer processes. Future research will test thesuitability of Dynamic Knowledge Map for tacit knowledge utilization in AEC organizations.

summary The objective of this paper is to present a strategy for implementation of CAD and IT in the construction and building management#1 industry in Sweden. The interest is in how to make the best use of the limited resources in a small country or region, cooperating internationally and at the same time avoiding to be totally dominated by the great international actors in the market of information technology.

In Sweden representatives from the construction and building management industry have put forward a research and development program called: "IT-Bygg#2 2002 - Implementation". It aims at making IT the vehicle for decreasing the building costs and at the same time getting better quality and efficiency out of the industry.

The presented strategy is based on a seminar with some of the most experienced researchers, developers and practitioners of CAD in Sweden. The activities were recorded and annotated, analyzed and put together afterwards.

The proposal in brief is that object oriented distributed CAD is to be used in the long perspective. It will need to be based on international standards such as STEP and it will take at least another 5 years to get established.

Meanwhile something temporary has to be used. Pragmatically a "de facto standard" on formats has to be accepted and implemented. To support new users of IT all software in use in the country will be analyzed, described and published for a national platform for IT-communication within the construction industry.

Finally the question is discussed "How can architect schools then contribute to IT being implemented within the housing sector at a regional or national level?" Some ideas are presented: Creating the good example, better support for the customer, sharing the holistic concept of the project with all actors, taking part in an integrated education process and international collaboration like AVOCAAD and ECAADE.

summary 3D modeling and computer simulations provide new ways for architecture students to study the relationship between the design and construction of buildings. Digital media help to integrate and expand the content of courses in drafting, construction and design. This paper describes computer-based exercises that intensify the student's experience of construction in several courses from sophomore to senior level. The courses integrate content from drafting and design communication, construction, CAD, and design. Several techniques are used to strengthen students' awareness and ability in construction. These include: Virtual design–build projects in which students construct 3D CAD models that include all elements that are used in construction. Virtual office in which several students must collaborate under the supervision of a student acting as project architect to create a 3D CAD model and design development documents. Virtual sub-contracting in which each student builds a trade specific 3D CAD model of a building and all of the trade specific models must be combined into a single model. Construction simulations (4D CAD) in which students build 3D CAD models showing all components and then animate them to illustrate the assembly process. Cost estimating using spreadsheets. These techniques are applied and reapplied at several points in the curriculum in both technical laboratory courses and design studios. This paper compares virtual construction methods to physical design–build projects and provides our pedagogical arguments for the use of digital media for understanding construction.

title Support for collaborative design reasoning in shared virtual spaces

summary This paper discusses collaborative design, emphasizing the elaboration and transformations of a problem space, and the role that unstructured verbal communication and graphic communication can play in these processes. An asynchronous collaborative system, called the Immersive Discussion Tool (IDT), is introduced as a means for supporting productive design exchanges. IDT allows collaborators to reason about 3-D models over the Internet using view-dependent and view-independent diagrammatic marks, dynamic simulations, geometric design surrogates and text annotations. IDT relies on VRML to view the models, with an extensive Java-based interface driving the interactive behavior, including the construction and playback of graphical annotations, the management of threaded discussions, and the management of file input/output. The development and initial implementation of IDT has revealed the difficulty of constructing complex marks in a virtual 3-D space. Possible strategies for dealing with these problems are suggested.

title Visual modeling and simulation for construction operations

summary Simulation practitioners in construction often experience difficulties in developing simulation models, i.e., tediousness and error-proneness. The visual environment presented in this paper gives users user-friendly support throughout the entire simulation development process, with the provision of a visual modeling interface, easy-to-use icon animation, and dynamic statistics. Under the visual modeling interface, modeling construction operations is completed through editing activity-based graphics as the standard graphic editing tools do, and no programming is required. An easy-to-use animation can facilitate communication between the simulation model and users, and assist users in verification and validation of the simulation model. Instead of creating 3-D images with adequate skills and much time, this animation takes the graphic simulation model as the background images and the pre-created 2-D iconic images as moving objects, in order that the preparing for animation is simple.

For Internet applications in the AEC industry, most of the efforts and success have been concentrated on project management and collaboration, while in the design and engineering consulting area, limited progress has been made. During the period of Internet development, the nature of the fragmentation of the AEC industry has not been changed. Based on previous research of surveys of development of Internet applications in the AEC industry (Zhou 2001), and the study of information technology both available today and in the near future, we propose a general abstracted model of an Internet-based consulting system by integrating a variety of disciplines and functions of design and construction processes. This model will cover a range of design phases, such as, information gathering, automatic remote consultation, specific problem solving, and collaboration. Finally, in future follow up research, we will apply the proposed model to steel construction in architectural design, and develop a prototype simulation by selecting one type of structural system.

summary This paper presents the findings from a study into the current exploitation of CSCW in design for the built environment in the UK. The research is based on responses to a web-based questionnaire. Members of various professions including civil engineers, architects, building services engineers and quantity surveyors were invited to complete the questionnaire. The responses reveal important trends in the breadth and size of project teams at the same time as new pressures are emerging regarding team integration and efficiency. The findings suggest that while CSCW systems may improve project management (e.g. via project documentation) and the exchange of information between team members it has yet to significantly support those activities that characterize integrated collaborative working between disparate specialists. The authors conclude by combining the findings with a wider discussion of the application of CSCW to design activity – appealing for CSCW to go beyond multidisciplinary working to achieve interdisciplinary working.

title Constructing Distributed Fretted Instruments for the Web

summary In this article, we present a new computer based music instrument for distributed performance on the Web. It was named “Cordas Virtuais” and we took advantage of the recent Java2 implementation to create a general model for fretted-string instruments using class abstractions. There is a heavy usage of JAVA Objected Oriented inheritance to encapsulate gestures derived from fretted string instruments using parameters such as string tuning, group of strings, hand gestures, rhythmic patterns, fingering and alike, that carry each a set of attributes and properties. We call this kind of new musical application as Distributed Musical Instrument (DMI). As an applet, Cordas runs in any browser supporting the current Java Virtual Machine (JVM) across the Web. We describe the concept of PlayStyle that was created to define styles of fingering on the strings. In the implementation we have two class-groups: the left hand and the right hand gestures. The left-hand classes control pitch changes or chords, and a right hand control the rhythm, dynamics, micro-rhythms and rhythmic patterns. A Co-ordination Matrix controls real time changes on left-hand movements. This matrix generates chord orbits that are equivalent to the traditional chord cadences. Finally, to show the potential of Cordas, we presented four musical examples in which a set of fretted instruments varying from the Classical Guitar to the Chinese Pipa were simulated.

summary In the paper-based world, CAAD-associations, such as SIGRADI, and scientific publishers aim at getting the right people together and for making sure their work gets distributed to their peers. Electronic networks, such as the Internet, are providing scientists with the means to pursue those activities on their own. In this paper we present the goals of an EU project called SciX (Scientific information eXchange). The goal of is this project is to analyze the business processes of scientific publishing, to invent new publication models and through a series of pilots to demonstrate how this should work. In the envisioned scenarios, professional associations such as SIGRADI play an important role.
