title Information Spaces for Mobile City Access
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 1 - no. 1
summary This paper describes two complementary European research projects that share common interests and goals. The work described is intended to facilitate city analysis and support decision-making. The first project focuses on the distribution, access and ease of use of city data. The system allows access to historical data concerning key buildings in Liverpool, England, via a suite of web-based tools and a palmtop device. The second project looks at extending the functionality of traditional computer aided design (CAD) software to enable geometric and semantic data to be combined within a single environment. The system allows those involved in city planning to better understand the past and present development pattern of an area so that their decisions on future proposals are better informed. The paper concludes by describing a system that integrates particular aspects of the two projects, and the potential that this integration can bring. This new work provides mobile access to historical city development data, current city information and tools to support urban project development.

title Measurement of Presence in Large Scale Virtual Environments
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2003.153
source Digital Design [21th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-1-6] Graz (Austria) 17-20 September 2003, pp. 153-160
summary It is now widely accepted that a sense of presence in a virtual environment is a crucial part of the success of the ‘experience’. This paper extends the authors previous work in naturalistic interfaces and perception of image to test experimentally the degree to which the type of interface and visual nature of the virtual environment determine the experience of presence or ‘being there’ in a large scale architectural virtual environment. The importance of presence to the success of architectural virtual environments is an important discussion. Should architectural VEs strive to be hyper-real (with all the attendant hardware issues of manipulating large amounts of data in real-time) or does a degree of abstraction in representation still afford an acceptable degree of presence?

title NAVRgate X, A Naturalistic Navigation Metaphor for Large Scale Virtual Environments
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.625
source CAADRIA 2003 [Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 974-9584-13-9] Bangkok Thailand 18-20 October 2003, pp. 625-630
summary This paper describes the latest in a series of real-world, low-cost interfaces for virtual reality. nAVRgate (the AVR being Architectural Virtual Reality) has looked at real-world analogies for interfacing with 'real' virtual environments in an attempt to improve the sense of presence, the phenomenon of sense of presence in virtual environments (VEs) often being seen as the real essence of Virtual Reality (Laurel, 1993)

title Automated Classification of CAAD-related Publications: Conditions for Setting-Up a Keywording System
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2003.365
source Connecting >> Crossroads of Digital Discourse [Proceedings of the 2003 Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture / ISBN 1-880250-12-8] Indianapolis (Indiana) 24-27 October 2003, pp. 365-371
summary This paper deals with the CUMINCAD-repository (Cumulative Index on CAD), which was set up in 1998 and has served the CAAD-community since then as an important source of archived domain related information. CUMINCAD contains over 5,000 entries in the form of publications in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design. The number has been growing steadily over the years. To date only advanced search mechanisms have been provided to access these works. This may work out well for a just-in-time location of a reference, but is inadequate for just in case browsing through the history of CAAD. For such applications, a hierarchical browsing interface, like one in Yahoo or DMOZ.org is envisioned. This paper describes how the keyword categories were defined and how a moderate, distributed effort in defining the categories will allow machine-identified classification of the entire data set. The aim of the paper is to contribute to building up a wide spread consensus on what the appropriate keyword categories in CAAD are, and what sub-topics should sit below the main keyword categories.
