summary Digital virtual reality (VR) and the metaverse provide opportunities for the creation of cultural extensions that define our contemporary society. This has been the practice for millennia – using different technologies and media; humans have always attempted to convey experience through representational forms. The paper puts forward an initial theoretical examination of metaverse using theories on perception and subjectivity in psychology and philosophy and the implications of these in architecture and space creation, both physical and digital. It considers historical VR spaces to better understand the influence of culture and applies this to the contemporary social VR spheres. Though they offer novel opportunities, digital virtual realities and immersive spaces of today are no different than the lineage of spaces and representations that strove to do this throughout history (Grau, 2003). Using different mediums, they each provide an extension of culture that reflects society and becomes a record of their times and ideals.

summary In the current design practice, new digital tools have emerged -visual- also called Infrastructures (Perkel, 2011) such as; Behance 2003, Pinterest 2009, Archdaily 2008, Instagram (2010) -to cite the most recognized in the creative field in Argentina-, which promote different opportunities and support the creative process and problem solving, making it easier for designers to find inspiring material through the Internet. However, very little is known about how these new practices affect professional work, how they themselves see it and the tensions they generate.This article will present the results of a general survey applied to expert designers as part of the first stage of the Doctoral Research project. summary It is now widely accepted that a sense of presence in a virtual environment is a crucial part of the success of the ‘experience’. This paper extends the authors previous work in naturalistic interfaces and perception of image to test experimentally the degree to which the type of interface and visual nature of the virtual environment determine the experience of presence or ‘being there’ in a large scale architectural virtual environment. The importance of presence to the success of architectural virtual environments is an important discussion. Should architectural VEs strive to be hyper-real (with all the attendant hardware issues of manipulating large amounts of data in real-time) or does a degree of abstraction in representation still afford an acceptable degree of presence?

summary Our proposal consists of showing how a PIXEL (a small part of a whole) can have a life of its own when it is taken out of its enviroment. This pixel, alone, is nothing, since it depends on others and a context to actually be something (a figure, etc.). Even though we initially emphasized that the pixel could very well be the main character of a play (which we still believe is true) we also wish to point out that today`s subject is to try to go above and below all studies, technology and even science, to try to find the answer in the most basic facts. The PIXEL now teaches us that "it" is the most noble single element that a digital artist can find. Most certainly, this issue will not add anything to science, and it might not change theories or the world itself; furthermore, we probably will not show anything that is not already known and no intelligent discussion will come up regarding the relevance or irrelevance of the pixel isolated from its context. Still, it is important to remark that the PIXEL, the smallest single creature that I know, has been the issue of many, many discussions and quire a few hours of work.

summary Hearing and touch may be incorporated into visual representation systems that historically covered creative process, now helped by multimedia. During 2002-2003 we developed an experimental design studio that challenged participants to design architecture from words (using their spelling, pronunciation, location, etc.) and through an inquiry based on the "concept of inwardness". Evoking a word from the association of images and texts as well as seizing its potential tactile and hearing dimensions completed what was a very interactive design process. Such process was utilized to generate images and ideas geared to design/make an "installation" to be displayed at art events.

summary Interaction between collaborating parties exerts strong and surprising forces on the design process and thus its outcomes. Hence, there is much to be gained by investigating the nature of these communications. By definition, an organisation establishes clear protocols to realise effective communication, and does so in response to business needs. In contrast, creative endeavours must often harness loose teams of specialised individuals, working in different contexts, disciplines, and language bases, and relying on nonformalised yet highly selective exchanges of information. It is therefore a considerable challenge to comprehend and improve these processes. One approach is to exploit the discrete information contained within digital communications to produce models of these complex conditions. This paper reports preliminary work to identify the components of an email visualisation system. The goal is to apprehend developing structures, providing the collective with the capacity for reflection.

summary While it is well known that the built environment influences our emotional state, it is often difficult to attribute these experiences to particular properties. In fact, a systematic investigation of the relation between physical structure and emotional experience of architecture has not yet been done. Now virtual reality simulations facilitate a completely controlled variation of spatial properties and thus allow to empirically evaluate architectural hypothesises. The aim of the presented study was to investigate which factors from a component-based description of rooms significantly correlate with cardinal dimensions of experience. In a perceptual experiment experiental qualities of 16 virtual vacant rectangular interiors were rated in eight principal categories by 16 participants using the semantic differential scaling technique. The scenes were generated by a custom made graphics tool that also automatically generated the component-based scene descriptions. The data analysis revealed several interesting correlations between scene features and rated experience: For example, a preference for ratios near to the golden section could be observed for spatial proportions, which are not directly perceivable. Altogether, a set of five independent factors (openness, two room proportions, room area and balustradeheight) appeared to be effective for widely describing the observed variance of the averaged attributed experiental qualities. Our combination of realistic virtual reality simulations and psychophysical data raising methods proved to be effective for basic architectural research. It allowed us to demonstrate quantitative relations between physical properties from a component-based description of architectural space and its emotional experience.

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary "This paper investigates the role of gaming engines in the architectural design process through the introduction of features such as immersion, interaction and collaboration. While traditional 3D modelling and visualization systems such as 3D Studio MAX and form?Z offer increasingly convincing visual simulations, gaming engines are approaching the visual realism of such systems and are offering additional interactive features that are usually available only in more expensive immersive virtual reality systems . Additionally, the capability to have multiple individuals inhabit and navigate the space offers unique opportunities for collaboration as well as the investigation of human behaviour. Participants with internet access can be invited to access a shared virtual environment. Collaboration among users can be further enhanced by combining immersive navigation with peer-to-peer instant messaging and/or adding a voice channel. This paper analyzes these issues through research summary and the creation and user testing of a prototype based on a publicly available gaming engine. Through a series of assignments within an academic course, students in the school of architecture were asked to iteratively use and test this prototype for the collaborative exploration of designed environments. Students made their environments available for others to navigate in real-time and offer comments. A final design review was conducted in which critics were asked to enter the designed environment, explore it at will and interact with the student as well as others present in the same virtual space. summary For many years, CAD software depended on entity objects that were manipulated and interpreted by the user as meaningful symbols. These entities only represented the geometrical aspect of the design, but never had knowledge of what they are, or how to behave. With the new CAD systems, this concept has changed into the smart CAD objects. The smart objects will automatically provide all the data related to it: geometry, materials, specifications, price, as well as manufacturers and theoretically any related data. Creating new objects is not an easy straightforward job, and requires more programming skills than previously needed. Taking into consideration the relative difficulties in learning to modify and create new CAD objects, this might lead to a new branch of learning, as the architecture students might not only need to learn how to use the CAD packages but also how to program it in a way that makes them capable of doing what they want rather than doing what the package allow them to do.

title ArDOT: A tool to optimise environmental design of buildings

summary Environmental design of buildings involves ‘finding the optimum’ solution satisfying predefined objective(s) (e.g., reduction in operating/capital cost, maximisation of daylighting etc.). A number of computer based simulation models exist to assist professionals in finding this optimum through building performance assessment. Contemporary practices involving building simulation require enormous effort to prepare input, extract output, and visualize data, which restricts designers from realizing the full potentials offered. In most cases, rules of thumb are applied and experienced guesses are made; simulation software is used only to validate the assumptions, which do not necessarily lead to the intended optimum. Moreover, these tools have been developed as simulation engines, which is inadequate to visualize the compounded and interdependent effect of a large number of design variables.

The authors believe that to realize the potential offered by building simulation software, a new breed of DBSs (Decision Based Systems) is needed coupling existing simulation engines with formal optimisation methods through neutral data standards (BPM – building product models) for seamless integration. This paper first elaborates on the previous attempts at solving integration issues related to the design process and simulation; also attempts at finding the limitations. Secondly, formulation of design problems as optimisation has been discussed with reference to the different stages of design. Thirdly, for effective integration of activities among stakeholders and processes, the use of client/ server oriented building product model has been proposed to overcome the limitations of file-based prototypes. Analysis and discussions based on the above aspects form as justification for ArDOT, an Architectural Design Optimisation Tool under development at IRUSE, National University of Ireland, Cork. Combining all three aspects into one makes ArDOT unique, which is essentially an enhanced decision making tool for the design of energy efficient buildings.

Given an array of data types and the potential infinity of the associated datascapes, there is an opportunity to develop systems that assist the presenter in the navigation and analysis of complex information scenarios. This research reports on the utilisation of intelligentagent based software for a better understanding of spatial information representation within the MPE. This is achieved by utilising intelligent agent software to aid the presenter in the searching, retrieving, and articulation of datasets, and the application of such technologies in the generation of time based 3D graphical and audio presentations.

summary While distributed or collaborative design studios have a long pedigree (Donath 1999), there seldom arises the chance to test the limits of the concepts implied by the idea of the physically separated design team. The indigenous differences of culture, schedules and language accentuate this. The authors entered into an experimental design exercise that would seek to explore the range of dualities, which are often encumbered by such studios owing to their very nature. As an additional catalyst in the experiment, a design topic was chosen which reflected the nature of the studio thereby creating a Gödelian knot of self-referentiality.

summary We consider virtual architecture as 3D virtual worlds able to support human activities and collaboration needs in digital virtual environments. 3D virtual worlds can go beyond the simulation of physical worlds to become dynamic, adaptable worlds by incorporating agents in the representation of the world. Agents are software systems that are capable of acting autonomously according to their own goals and beliefs. A society of agents accommodates agent communication and collaboration as part of the agent reasoning. In this paper we present a framework in which agents become the basis for the elements of a 3D virtual world. This framework is presented as having a model for an agent that can interact and reason about the 3D world, and as a model for agent communication. The model is illustrated by the design of a virtual conference room."

summary We present as an example a story entitled "Invisible Cities" by Italo Calvino in which the author describes an imaginary city. Appealing to mathematical concepts, students seek to design a type of city or architectural space, arising from each student's interpretation of the text. Here, Literature, Design and Mathematics form a framework in which each discipline justifies the presence of the others. In our private case the need of an evolution of the language is presented besides by means of the use of the Digital Graphic.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.
