summary In Hong Kong, about 46% of the population lives in public housing estates. The density of the estates could be as high as 2,500 persons per hectare and there is an increased pressure for increasing the density. Therefore, open space in the estates contributes significantly for relieving the sense of over-congestion. Preliminary study shows that the usage of these open spaces is as low as 1.36%, and the low usage rate is largely due to inappropriate planning and design, particularly with respect to climate requirements, rather than insufficient area. Researchers thus attempt to overlay the user-behavior with the environment-behavior data to investigate the impact of irresponsive environmental design on the user-behavior. It is also this exercise that provides new thoughts to research of social behavior and activity study for high density urban habitation.

title Refining a computational fractal method of analysis: testing Bovill’s architectural data

summary In 1996 Bovill applied Mandelbrot’s fractal method for calculating the approximate visual complexity of images to architecture. This method is one of only a limited number of quantifiable approaches to provide a measure of the relative complexity of an architectural form. However, the method has rarely been tested despite many scholars uncritically repeating Bovill’s conclusions. While Bovill’s original work was calculated manually, a software program, Archimage, is presently being developed by the authors as a tool to assist architectural designers and researchers to understand the visual complexity of building designs. The present research returns to Bovill’s original architectural data (elevations of famous buildings) and re-calculates the results published therein using Archimage and the commercial software Benoit. These results are then compvared with those produced by Bovill (1996) and Lorenz (2003), to determine if any consistency can be found between the sets. The level of consistency will assist in determining the validity of Bovill’s method and provide important data in the ongoing process to refine the Archimage software and the analytical method.

title A Preliminary Model of Community-based Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development

summary This paper describes a research on building Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development. The objective of the research phase discussed in this paper is to define a prototype of information system that basically facilitates information communication among involved participants in an urban spatial development planning. The system is designed by putting stress on local community. Their spatial perception and the availability of GIS technology in local context become constraints in building the system. Internet becomes the main alternative for information dissemination for this phase. This is also supported by the use of web-based GIS as framework of information system. Through few socialization sessions, the proposed model has indicated a prospected alternative to be seamless communication media among participants. To support an easy-access for local people in using this information system a mechanism of information access has been proposed in the form of local information center.

summary Hong Kong is the most densely populated city in the world. Design of buildings in urban Hong Kong is regulated by the Building (Planning) regulations of the Government. This piece of law is over 40 years old and has been proven to be inadequate. This paper introduces a new simplified method, the Unobstructed Vision Area Method (UVA), for daylight design in high-density cities. The method was developed based on empirical and theoretical formulation as well as extensive validation and studies using computational simulations. The paper highlights the steps necessary to apply computational methods for law making, the difficulties and possibilities in the process, as well as the practical and implementation of adopting computational results and techniques in everyday practical life of the architect and the controlling agency. The Government of Hong Kong has recently adopted the UVA method.

summary The creditability of using CAAD depends on the rigour of its methodology, the logic of its deduction and most importantly the feasibility of its results for practical use. This paper examines two lighting simulation software as the basis for providing a wider critic on the research of CAAD in the practice of architecture. The paper argues that the ‘contextual’ and appropriate use of a simple tool or method should be the thesis of CAAD research. Using an example, the paper then logically work out an example of how that could be done, and the basis of its contextual logic. The example illustrated here concludes the validity of the software and its implication for legal use. Furthermore, the paper provides a critic of CAAD for regulatory and legal acceptance. The experience in Hong Kong is illustrated.
