title A Study On Content Sources and Acquisition Techniques of CAAD-Related Publications

summary The scientific publication process has been so far only marginally affected by the possibilities of the Internet. This may be attributed to a lack of sound business models and pilots to demonstrate the ultimate benefits of free scientific publication. A team of universities, Internet publishers and applied research institutes proposes in the framework of the SciX-project (open, self-organizing repository for scientific information exchange) to demonstrate these benefits and reengineer parts of the scientific publication process. This contribution focuses on the findings from investigations into the identification and acquisition of content sources - such as conference papers, theses and journal papers - related to the field of CAAD. Special attention has been paid to the different types of available information, such as bibliographical data, summaries, full texts, etc. In this paper, an overall estimation concerning the expected scientific output in the field of CAAD (within a midterm perspective), and the dissemination of already fully digitally stored publications as well as procedures (with financial figures) for retrospective digitalization of paper-based publications will be presented. The workflow concerning digitalization and conversion was studied, as different levels of output are feasible.

title Automated Classification of CAAD-related Publications: Conditions for Setting-Up a Keywording System
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2003.365
source Connecting >> Crossroads of Digital Discourse [Proceedings of the 2003 Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture / ISBN 1-880250-12-8] Indianapolis (Indiana) 24-27 October 2003, pp. 365-371
summary This paper deals with the CUMINCAD-repository (Cumulative Index on CAD), which was set up in 1998 and has served the CAAD-community since then as an important source of archived domain related information. CUMINCAD contains over 5,000 entries in the form of publications in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design. The number has been growing steadily over the years. To date only advanced search mechanisms have been provided to access these works. This may work out well for a just-in-time location of a reference, but is inadequate for just in case browsing through the history of CAAD. For such applications, a hierarchical browsing interface, like one in Yahoo or DMOZ.org is envisioned. This paper describes how the keyword categories were defined and how a moderate, distributed effort in defining the categories will allow machine-identified classification of the entire data set. The aim of the paper is to contribute to building up a wide spread consensus on what the appropriate keyword categories in CAAD are, and what sub-topics should sit below the main keyword categories.

title CUMINCAD.ES: A First Step Towards Multilingual Digital Libraries in CAAD
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary This paper presents developments concerning a digital library called CUMINCAD.ES, which includes CADrelated publications in Spanish language. CUMINCAD is an acronym for Cumulative Index on CAD and in this library only publications in English language are archived. While English may be the lingua franca of scientific communication, publications in other languages is important to strengthen local cultures, invent professional terminology, enable technology transfer to those who are not very proficient in English, such as practitioners and students and to provide an incentive for authors to publish in their native languages. CUMINCAD.ES (http://cumincades.scix.net) is a repository complementing CUMINCAD providing a basis for the investigation of multilingual repositories. As this is work in progress, the state of the art will be reviewed as well as the potential for further developments.

title Cumulative Index of CAAD: Current Status and Future Directions
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 1 - no. 2
summary This article discusses the Cumulative Index of CAAD (CUMINCAD.SciX.net) - a digital library set up in 1998 serving the CAAD-community as an important source of scientific information. During the first stage, the metadata of CAAD-related conference proceedings were compiled and published on-line, including all abstracts and approximately 50% of the full-texts. In a subsequent step a Citation Index was created. Currently, theses and dissertations are being added to the library. Furthermore, a hierarchical topic structure was developed for automated classification of publications in the future, with topics being defined by keywords and characteristic papers. The next version of CUMINCAD, expected to be released later this year, will also feature a discussion forum, an event calendar, an option for commenting on and ranking publications as well as creating an on-line personal bibliographic review. CUMINCAD is a unique digital library in the field of CAAD serving a growing user-community. Younger doctoral degree students and junior researchers will benefit most from this edited, structured collection freely available via Internet.

title Realestate online information systems
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2003.561
source Digital Design [21th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-1-6] Graz (Austria) 17-20 September 2003, pp. 561-567
summary Several commercial real-estate sites provide listings of available commercial property on the Internet. These listings are generated on the basis of selection criteria as floor area, price and location. Despite the obvious utility of the listings and their promise for the transaction process and market transparency, one third of commercial realestate listing sites went bankrupt in 2001 and 2002. To provide an explanation for the failure, 63 commercial real-estate sites were analysed and classified into three basic business models: the Research / Information model, the Marketing model and the Transaction model. A common success factor for all models is the functionality of the site, especially interaction between the user and the available information. The paper proposes that the transfer of existing architectural representations, information-processing instruments and decision-taking tools is an essential component of future development towards integrated services that accompany a building throughout its lifecycle. This transfer amounts to (1) the addition of building and contextual information from standard documentation and online information services, (2) the derivation and coherent description of programmatic requirements database, and (3) advanced user interaction with building information.
