source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary The act of design using the graphic language is esential to the organization and determination of the process. Introducing digital tools modifies the design project research. Its application faces the traditional experience and encourages different demands conceptually and operatively. We wonder if the use of digital media, from the very beginning, is possible or pupils must have trainning in the use of conventional graphic in order to be meaningfull. Our proposition is to include digital technology from the beginnitng of the teaching process, in order to explore the potencial of each mode and promoving to learn the normative background.

source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary Acido Surtido is a wide-ranging editorial project free of charge. Whose purpose is to create a place where visual thinking meets and juxtapose at random. Its active principles arise from the chaotic combination, in a 64 x 94 cm sheet of paper, of twenty eight graphic works developed in an independent and parallel way by an equal number of itinerant authors, and based on a frame topic from which plenty of visual ideas are launched. Through this "cadavre exquis" strategy, Acido Surtido calls on the reader's ability to re-elaborate and develop new interpretations, even new for those originally proposed by the authors. Acido Surtido is an offset printed centrefold, with an impression of 2000 copies.

summary This work treats the most outstanding aspects in experiences that conjugate analogical and digital processes in the teaching and learning in the way, carried out in the School of Architecture of the UNMDP, Argentina. A new dialogue space among the ways of manual and digital production, motivates the student beginning to traffic a path toward other and new thought forms that it spreads to achieve growing levels of autonomy. In this productive space of interactions, the necessity of both means is verified, since each one has different and inaccessible potentialities to the other one and its interaction transcends its individual advantages.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.145
summary To explore how mobile digital tools can bring students out from isolated classrooms, we tested several for use in design studio site visits. We focused on small, off-the-shelf tools that are inexpensive and easy to upgrade. In this paper we identify the logistical, efficiency, and learning considerations for the selection and introduction of mobile digital tools , with observations about device usability and administration that are applicable to other kinds of technology introduction. We found that adoption of a tool depends on several factors, including ease of use and inconspicuous nature. Compared to traditional tools, most of these tools require a great deal of set-up time before students can use them efficiently. In addition, they require docking with a computer to analyze the information collected in the field. As a result, most of the learning takes place in the studio, rather than in the field. Our eventual goal is to clarify the potentials of place-recording tools, making it easier to gather and use a toolkit for specific situations.

source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary In my production I seek to unite the diverse both in its form and in its essence: the poetic and the rational, the organic matter and technology, the ancestral and the current. Dialectical pairs that continually play at seducing each other, maintaining their symbolic balance. My artistic searches come back from every corner to the traces of feelings and senses. "With that beating...", operates on an ancestral, symbolic and ritual space which every age updates with its own view. It dwells in irony, where the heart is the emblem of grief, desire and seduction.

source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 182-186
summary The educative proposal was based on the summary attained through experiences piled up during the 2 last semester courses, 2/2006-1/2007. This proposal corresponds to a mix of methodology (by personal attendance / by internet). Founding on the Theory of the Game (Eric Berne 1960) and on different theories such as: Multiple intelligences (Haward Gardner 1983), Emotional Intelligence (Peter Salowey and John Mayer 1990, Goleman 1998), Social Intelligence (Goleman 2006), the Triarchy of Intelligence (Stemberg, R.J. 1985, 1997), “the hand of the human power”, it´s established that the power of the voice, that of the imagination, the reward, the commitment and association produce a significant increase of the productivity (Rosabeth Moss Kanter 2000), aside from the constructive processes of the knowledge (new pedagogical concepts constructivista of Ormrod J.E. 2003 and Tim O´Reilly 2004).

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs
source SIGraDi 2006 - [Proceedings of the 10th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Santiago de Chile - Chile 21-23 November 2006, pp. 465-469
summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. Similarly, the method discussed in this paper will aid in solving physical production problems with complex building forms. References Bentley, P.J. (Ed.). Evolutionary Design by Computers. source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary This paper elaborates on the use of electronic pin-ups in real-time local reviews making use of larger format interactive plasma screens. The paper briefly explains the technical aspects of an actual implementation in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. The main focus of the paper is placed on the use of a 61. interactive plasma screen in a graduate design studio during the second semester of 2003 and the benefits that such an implementation has reported. The narrative explains how the use of an interactive plasma screen for informal as well as formal reviews is not only saving printing resources but it is also having a very positive impact on how we conduct design reviews.
