summary In this paper we present a framework for use in the blue-c, a collaborative telepresence environment. We implemented the framework on top of the blue-c API to enable new ways of designing digital 3D spaces in an immersive way. The framework will be used to support designers in creating spatial scenarios within CAVETM – like environments. It concentrates on the integration aspect of different media and data types. Architectural knowledge and information technology is combined to introduce a new approach for designing virtual environments.

summary The use and evolution of information and communication technologies (TIC) are changing human’s cultural, social, and material content. It regards not only the complexity of technology, but also the re-discussion of concepts concerning to several domains of knowledge, among them, architecture (theory, practice and teaching). The particular focus of this paper is to present an undergraduate teaching experience in a French School of Architecture (École d'Architecture de Toulouse). The course called FINC (“Forme, Information, Novation, Conception”), deals with new designers' attitudes exploring cyberspace. By concentrating on a critical approach of the ""reciprocal contamination"" between physical and virtual architecture, the aim of this course is to bring architectural students to face a new design experience: to explore the new cognitive and communicative environments of cyberspace, designing in a different conceptual and experimental environment.

summary Almost every architect uses analogy while designing. The source of inspiration is nature, technology, geometry, etc., besides the influence of the work of other architects. Analogy in architecture has a close relationship with culture as well. Culture is a dynamic occurrence and evolves by the influence of many aspects such as technological, economical, environmental and social. In the process of design, architects built op knowledge from their own experience and designs, but also from the other designers work. Usually, architects develop this quality and ability during the education, and later by trial and error methodwhile practising the design. This is habitually done based on own conscience, intuition and experience.The developments in ICKT (Information, Communication and Knowledge Technology) as a part of broader technological developments and the ongoing globalisation, influences the culture as a dynamic process and therefore the architecture.. It is necessary to make these influences explicit for their embedding in architectural design education of young professionals. This can be achieved by transferring the resulting knowledge to a knowledge model by using intelligent modelling techniques. The operational aspects of design analogies to be implemented in education, research and the daily practice of designing architects need attention. This paper discusses the operational aspects of cultural analogy in design by using an intelligent computational modelling approach.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary The paper outlines a pedagogical approach whereby a number of technology-intensive skills can be quickly learned to a level of useful practicality through a series of discrete, yet cumulative explorations with the design goal of creating intelligently responsive architectural systems. The emerging area of responsive architecture serves as a practical means for inventing entirely new ways of developing spaces, and the designing and building environments that address dynamic, flexible and constantly changing needs. Responsive architecture is defined here as spaces and objects that can physically re-configure themselves to meet changing needs. The central issues explored are human and environmental interaction and behaviors, embedded computational infrastructures, kinetic and mechanical systems and physical control mechanisms. Being both multidisciplinary and technology-intensive in nature, architects need to be equipped with at least a base foundational knowledge in a number of domains in order to be able to develop the skills necessary to explore, conceive, and design such systems. The teaching methods were carried out with a group of undergraduate design students who had no previous experience in mechanical engineering, electronics, programming, or kinetic design with the goal of creating a responsive kinetic system that can demonstrate physical interactive behaviors on an applicable architectural scale. summary This research proposes to support the reading of physical ambiences by the development of a representational technique which compiles, in a numerical interface, two types of data: sensory and filmic. These data are recorded through the use of a portable array equipped with sensors (Potvin 1997, 2002, 2004) as well as the acquisition of Video information of the moving environment. The compilation of information is carried out through a multi-media approach, by means of a program converting the environmental data into dynamic diagrams, as well as the creation of an interactive interface allowing a possible diffusion on the Web. This technique, named APMAP/Video, makes it possible to read out simultaneously spatial and environmental diversity. It is demonstrated through surveys taken at various seasons and time of the day at the new Caisse de dépôt et de placement headquarters in Montreal which is also the corpus for a SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) research grant on Environmental Adaptability in Architecture (Potvin et al. 2003-2007). This case study shows that the technique can prove of great relevance for POEs (Post Occupancy Evaluation) as well as for assistance in a new design project.

summary Today, digital cities are being developed all over the world. By using a city metaphor, digital cities integrate urban information and create public spaces. However, there are questions as to how to enter the new emerging digital cities, how humans perceive themselves in digital cities, and there are also issues of recognition of the digital city forms? This paper takes the idea of cognition in order to explore the structure of the new spatiality as cyberspace. By exploring the factors relating to human spatial cognition in physical space it is possible to interpret how humans perceive the spatial form of digital cities. By examining spatial experience in physical space, the interface of spatial cognition of interaction between digital cities and physical cities can be investigated. And by taking this approach, we propose an online prototype of a metaphor for a digital city.

The virtual reconstruction and documented part of the history of the city and the records of buildings in different historical growing moments of Maracaibo City, since its foundation until now, will permit recover part of the lost memories of the city. This research will constitute a unpublished experience in Venezuela and belong to the Hypermediatical Model of Maracaibo City of the Institute of Architectonical Research of the Faculty of Architecture and Design in the Universidad del Zulia.

title Modeling of Activities: an approach to the virtual representation of human behaviors in architectural spaces tested in emergency units

summary Despite the increasing interest in the functionality and humanization of architecture, there are few studies covering the occupation of buildings and methods to represent activities in spaces. This article explores new software for simulating and virtual modeling in order to facilitate the analysis and visualization of events in buildings. Of particular importance is programming the behavior of 3D-characters according to the probabilistic evolution of activities, and producing animations and interactive models. This approach was tested in a study of three emergency units of hospitals in Chile. Although a full integration of software was not possible, the process developed (in particular the subjective tours) demonstrated that the technique can provide new information about the functioning and spatiality of the units. In addition, it suggested operative and architectural improvements supporting the management and design of facilities.

summary Describing design as a sequence of steps cannot convey the complexity of social interactions that it embodies. Design is not merely a process, but a co-evolution of efforts and events in various places and times—both synchronous and asynchronous. Designers share their values, effort and expertise within design settings via artifacts that further the design process. Increasingly, these design settings in academia, research, and professional practice combine physical and virtual modalities such as immersion, projection, and a range of interaction technologies. Peter Anders has described such spaces as cybrids: hybrids that integrate virtual and physical space. In these settings, designers use overlapping physical and virtual artifacts and tools to arrive at a co-operative design resolution. Within collaborative design, these artifacts take on an additional role. As embodiments of design ideas and actions, they become media for communication. Donald Schon asserts that design should be considered a form of making, rather than primarily a form of problem solving, information processing or research. Indeed the line separating creation from design is becoming increasingly blurred. For the design artifact itself may become a part of the design proposal—its virtual presence incorporated within a cybrid structure or object. We may in the future see a proliferation of cybrid settings that support collaborative, digital design. The technologies for this already exist in collaborative tools, networked computing, scanning and immersive media. However, it will take a creative vision to see how these disparate tools and devices can integrate within the ideal design setting.

summary Recent urban transformations worldwide consequentially lead to the numerous environmental problems that have to be solved bycomplex structure of social interest groups which have to be included in that process. This demands initiated requisitioning andmodification of concepts and methodologies of planning and managing urban development. At this moment there are differentmodels used in world wide practice, but main bases of new methods and techniques are the same. Leaving the idea of possibility ofconstituting the universal urban planning model lead to very productive results in developing the disciplinary methodologies. Processof transformation of traditional comprehensive urban planning model to integrated procedural pluralistic model (based on sustainabledevelopment principles) is something that can be underlined as a main characteristic of disciplinary development. The questions ofdecision making mechanisms and plans implementation are put in axes of conceptual and methodological considerations. Urbanplanning loses the classic form of making the multi level comprehensive urban plans with exact spatial and time horizon. It means, ingeneral that planning and managing of urban development is aiming to be realistic, decentralized, strategic and problem oriented,arbitrary, not instructive, but understood as a efficient and effective process.Operational support to the this kind of approach are Decision Support IT tools, such as GIS - Geographical Information Systems orES -Expert Systems. Usability of IT tools is based on their capability to perform fast and complicated processing of spatial data andon their flexibility towards specific real problems which are to be solved. In order to use maximum of capabilities of these tools inpractice problem solving it is necessary to adjust their structure and usage to the: - actual conditions of socioeconomic of the contextin which urban development planning and management is performed, - practical demands that managing of urban development has tofore fill, - all participants in urban management process, - institutional mechanisms and procedures.

Pedro da Cova (Gondomar), located ten kilometres from the city centre of Porto (Portugal), is considerate a depressed territory, with a large spectrum of social, economic and urban problems, but also with local positive aspects capable to reach the different development opportunities.In the ambit of the regeneration process for this area, the local authority draw a strategy based in the empowerment of the citizens, where the Information Communication Technologies (ICT’s) assumed a major role. With this purpose, it was intended to build a Community Technology Centre for the disfavoured children. From the building construction till the first activities, it is our conviction that to break the differences between the have and the have not’s it will be very important to conciliate the new technologies and the local characteristics. The children will be the active agents in the dissemination of the project through the development of the different activities, sensitising the families to adopt a healthy life and announce situations of risk, for example. To validate the project will be created an permanent observatory that propose a moment of reflection and auto-valuation about the evolution of the different activities, thechanges to do, and the identification of new problems and the redefinition of new methodologies. The aim of the article is not only to show the positive aspects, indeed significant, but also to bring into discussion some questions; in order to understand the possibility of defining an empowerment strategy based in the ICT’s. How to conciliate the individualperspectives of the future into a common objective? How to show to all community that information and knowledge are fundamentalto build a more liveable and equity neighbourhood? How to transfer the results to a larger strategy for the entire city? And, at theend, how to explain that people is the most important "infrastructure" to build a better future?

Ranges of spatial configurations have been developed with numerous instances and adaptations; many have occurred in our own century as the information needs of the modern society evolved. Bernard Tschumi denotes these phenomena as architectural urbanism where city-generators, functions, and programs combine and intersect in spaces of endless cross programming. Today, derelict industrial spaces [terrain vagues] have become social places that accommodate public activities. New technologies, particularly those associated with electronic media have radically influenced the program and typology of these event-spaces. Yet, in spite of social, technological, and material changes, the essence of the event-structure has not changed, it remains a place of interaction.

title iCube: Ubiquitous Media Spaces for Embodied Interaction

summary This paper outlines new facilities within ubiquitous media spaces supporting embodied interaction between humans and computation. We believe that the current approach to developing electronic based design environments is fundamentally defective with regard to support for multi-person multimodal design interactions. In this paper, we present an alternative ubiquitous computing environment based on an integrated design of real and virtual worlds. We implement a research prototype environment called iCube. The functional capabilities implemented in iCube include spatially-aware 3D navigation, laser pointer interaction, and tangible media. Some of its details, benefits, user experiences, and issues regarding design support are discussed.

summary This research presents the collaboration in the VDS system through a microcomputer technology- a PDA (Personal Digital Assistants). Architect can collaborate anytime anyplace via VDS, a substitution to an old system that requires a specific location to work on. This research has studied and analyzed the format and the limitation of collaboration between PDA and Personal Computer, the wireless communication technology, and the Web Service technology, which enable different devices to share information through the Internet Network. The work process and the studied information have been used to develop a Web Application, a collaboration tool for a team of architect and designer. This Web Application has been tested in a renovation project, a clubhouse for a scuba diving place The objective of this research is to become a guideline of collaboration in architectural design work through Smart Object in order to serve the coming Ubiquitous era (Weiser, 1998)

summary A significant quantum of all buildings constructed in modern times is designed for residential purpose. A tremendous amount of money is being spent every year for construction of residential buildings. Therefore, optimization of design becomes very important. In a country like India most people in urban area live in houses having constrained area. A significant part of residential units comes under mass housing either as high-rise building blocks or as plotted developments. In any of such schemes there are large number of housing units for a group of families of whom general characteristics are known but characteristics of individual families are not known at the time of designing. This situation is, however, suitable for scientific investigation and analysis based on statistical surveys. Broadly speaking, this paper suggests approach to deal with this situation of finding optimum layout of rooms of a housing unit for any target group of families when the covered area is so constrained that freedom of using different criteria like aesthetics, structural systems, materials and methods of construction in varieties of ways is drastically reduced. In such constrained area for housing units rooms are generally found rectangular within overall rectangular outline of each unit. Method shown here is valid under this restriction. It is also assumed that number of rooms will be restricted to such number that exhaustive search for design is practically possible within a reasonable time with present day capabilities of normally available PCs.
