summary The intention of this paper is to examine the mutual influences of initial architectural, structural and digital manufacturing related decisions on the evolution of free-form structures. A survey on current applications will be presented to lay the foundation for the examination of new production techniques and structural concerns for the computer generated expressive forms. Finally, the paper will describe an interactive web-based database project which aims to establish a grammar on the mutual influences of architectural, structural and production related features of free-forms. Based on the built examples of blob structures, the database serves as a catalogue of possibilities related to form, and facilitate assessment of the impact of the early choices on the free-form building design and development.

title ARCHIDNA: A GENREATIVE SYSTEM FOR SHAPE CONFIGURATONS

summary his thesis concerns a new generation process for shape configurations using a set of operations. The approach derives from analyzing a particular design style and programming them into a computer. It discusses how generative CAD software can be developed that embodies a style and how this software can serve in the architectural design process as a computational design tool. The thesis proposes a prototype software system, ArchiDNA, to demonstrate the use of operations to generate drawings in a specific design style. ArchiDNA employs a set of operations to produce design drawings of shape configuration in Peter Eisenman's style for the Biocentrum building plan in Frankfurt, Germany. The principles of form generation are defined as a set of operations. ArchiDNA generates 2D and 3D drawings similar to Eisenmans plan and model for the Biocentrum building. The extension system of ArchiDNA, called ArchiDNA++, supports designers in defining operations and generating shape configurations. Designers can enter and edit their own shapes for the generation process and also control the parameters and attributes for shape operations. Thus, designers can manage the generation process and explore using ArchiDNA++, to generate shape configurations that are consistent with their own drawing style.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary Sketching is a major means of exploiting the first conceptual developments in architectural design. If we want to support the architect in the ideas-developing phase of design, then we need to understand the conventions of depiction and encoding in drawings. The theory of graphic units provides an extended list of such conventions that are widely used. We propose that a multi-agent system for recognition of graphic units in drawings is fruitful: agents can specialize in graphic units, a multi-agent system can deal with ambiguity through negotiation and conflict resolution, and multi-agent systems function in dynamically changing environments. We first make a multi-agent system that can do something simpler: playing Mah Jong solitary. The Mah Jong solitary system shares the following important features with a multi-agent system that can recognize graphic units: (1) specialized agents for moves; (2) negotiation between agents to establish the best move; (3) dynamically changing environment; and (4) search activity in more advanced strategies. The paper presents the theoretical basis of graphic units and multi-agents systems. The multi-agent framework and its implementation is presented. Various levels of game play are distinguished, and these are correlated to the multi-agent system. The paper shows how the findings form the basis for graphic unit recognition.

summary In this paper the possibilities of using the computers at course of architectural compositions are considered. As the start point of the new teaching method of architectural composition we used the course of tradition architectural composition, elaborated at our Faculty. The course of Digital Architectural Composition was finished in 2002. The main goal of using the new digital media for modelling architectural forms was checking the new possibilities of form creation. Traditionally, searching of forms at the conceptual design stage is performed by using sketches, drawings and physical models. Our new method showed that is possible to do the same thing using the computerbased 3D modelling, experiencing no physical limitations of the 'real' substance. At the same time, at the early design stages, when formal value is sought, computer modelling can be done almost intuitively. In ours work we try to find a creative way of using computer - transforming the tool into medium. The attention was paid on exploring the possibilities characteristic for computers and not available with traditional methods of modelling. Architect’s tradition tools are effectively replaced by a computer, which create a new way of doing things.

summary This paper describes a practice-led research project that investigates the application of digital modelling and communication technologies in urban and architectural design. The project is being carried out by our team with the collaboration of the architecture and planning departments at local borough council and local community participation. The main methodology for the project revolves around the evolution of an interactive three-dimensional digital urban model, which incorporates a variety of visual, graphic and numeric data. This digital model is utilised within a web site to help facilitate a participatory approach to the physical and social regeneration of an inner urban zone, in terms of both the built environment and the attempted creation of a virtual community.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary Responsive architecture is commonly defined as a type of architecture that has the ability to alter its form in response to changing conditions. While this description is successful in capturing the gist of the topic, it does not provide us with the more detailed understandings required to build it. The knowledge required to build a truly responsive form of architecture is substantial, an understanding of architecture, robotics, artificial intelligence and structural engineering are all beneficial. The links that are required between each knowledge base to actuate and control the responses of this type of architecture further complicate matters – suggesting potential reasons for the ambivalence of architects towards deeply exploring to the topic or extending it beyond the aesthetic application of an event-based architecture. This paper will build a model of responsive architecture that explains one possible approach to the topic, emphasizing ways to build it and control it in the process.

summary We speculate on a possible CAAD future that deploys and extends paradigms of natural growth and cellular development to an extent that would allow the planting and growth of man-made structures. This approach is based on the translation and expression of digital data structures into artificial physical form and the building of structures by decentral means. In such a scenario, generative and evolutionary architecture could seamlessly blend into building construction. As a discussion of as yet unavailable future technologies and methodologies the proposed remains at a “sketchy” level and must largely limit itself to preliminary and speculative considerations. In order to restrain the scope of this paper to the area of building design and construction, we focus on subway development and discuss possible cellular approaches to this particular field emphasizing aspects of functional aesthetics. We encourage the reader to take this example as a point of departure only, to generalise our explanations and to apply them to other building types. We support our discussion with findings made in software simulations of humandesigned cellular growth processes.

summary Shape grammars were introduced by Gips and Stiny in 1972. Since then, there have been many articles and books written by them and their associates. In 1992, Aaron Fleisher, a professor at the School of Planning, MIT, wrote a critique of their work in an article titled “Grammatical Architecture?” published in the journal Environment and Planning B. According to him, Gips, Stiny and later Mitchell, propose a hypothesis that states that shape grammars are presumed to represent knowledge of architectural form, that grammars are “formable,” and that there is a visual correspondence to verbal grammar. The strong version of “the hypothesis requires that an architectural form be equivalent to a grammar.” Fleisher considers these hypotheses unsustainable, and argues his case by analyzing the differences between language, and architecture, and by dealing with the concepts of lexicons, syntax and semantics. He concludes by stating that architectural design is negotiated in two modalities: the verbal and the visual, and that equivalences are not at issue; they do not exist. If there is such thing as a language for design, it would provide the means to maintain a discussion of the consequences in one mode, of the state and conditions of the other. Fleisher’s observations serve as the basis of this paper, a tribute to him, and also an opportunity to present an outline to an alternate approach or hypothesis to shape grammars, which is “nonlinguistic” but “generative,” in the sense that it uses production rules. A basic aspect of this hypothesis is that the only similarity between syntactic rules in language and some rules in architecture is that they are recursive.

summary This paper describes a research to develop new urban designalternatives for Gaziantep by using fractal based approaches. The aim of the research is not only generating new form alternatives but also considering the continuity of traditional architectural and urban pattern which faces deterioration. Within this study, it is intended to test the applicability of the fractal based generative approaches and explore the potential advantages. The method called CADaFED (Ediz, 2003) is updated to be used in one of the 3d modeling programs, 3DsMax scripting and it is used as an experimental tool in two-day student workshop. The working field is limited as Bey Neighbourhood in Gaziantep for its well-preserved architectural characteristics. In this paper, the outcomes of the student workshop will be evaluated and discussed in the sense of affirmative effects of fractal based design approaches.

summary Expert designers typically refer to and re-use past solutions for recurring design problems. Case-based design (CBD) attempts to transfer this natural design reasoning process to computer-aided design using artificial intelligence (AI) methods and databases. The housing design domain is particularly suited for applying the CBD approach because the traditional method of home design already makes extensive use of precedents and solutions are highly standardized in that industry, at least in the U.S. This paper introduces classificatory types of housing precedents that provide a basis for a structured knowledge representation that supports case retrieval. The classificatory types gives to a research prototype an efficient classification and indexing mechanism that combines form- and component-based features and remains flexible (i.e. can be modified and customized by users), and a retrieval mechanism that uses the indexing mechanism.

summary Tensegrity, defined as “tensional integrity,” is central to the design of a semi-open exhibition space that was submitted as an entry to the international competition for the design of “Ephemeral Structures for the City of Athens,” in the context of the 2004 Olympic Games. The main feature of the proposed exhibition space is a vaulted dome composed of interconnected detachable and deployable tensegrity units. The most challenging aspect in the design of the tensegrity vault was the generation of alternative spatial configurations for form exploration and study. For this purpose a mathematical code has been developed that links all the parameters that affect the design of tensegrity vaults. The code also allows for the parametric graphical generation of the vault by displaying geometric information in a 3D environment. This paper discusses the geometric basis of the code and its usefulness in the morphological study of the tensegrity vaulted dome for the proposed ephemeral structure. summary This paper attempts to analyse the results of the multidisciplinary project focused on the holistic approach to education in the field of architectural history and conservation with an extensive use of computer technology. The skills trained usually separately within autonomous courses were brought together to form a “task force” project addressed to the students from two universities in different countries. The increased role of architectural design within a historical context and the need for the corresponding changes in the undergraduate course curricula is also stressed. What is more, the experiment revealed to be an interesting method of exploitation of the power of the computer as a design tool and, what is more, as a design stimulator in the early stage of the architectural design process. In this way the paper contributes also to the discussion on integration of IT within design studio.

summary Recent urban transformations worldwide consequentially lead to the numerous environmental problems that have to be solved bycomplex structure of social interest groups which have to be included in that process. This demands initiated requisitioning andmodification of concepts and methodologies of planning and managing urban development. At this moment there are differentmodels used in world wide practice, but main bases of new methods and techniques are the same. Leaving the idea of possibility ofconstituting the universal urban planning model lead to very productive results in developing the disciplinary methodologies. Processof transformation of traditional comprehensive urban planning model to integrated procedural pluralistic model (based on sustainabledevelopment principles) is something that can be underlined as a main characteristic of disciplinary development. The questions ofdecision making mechanisms and plans implementation are put in axes of conceptual and methodological considerations. Urbanplanning loses the classic form of making the multi level comprehensive urban plans with exact spatial and time horizon. It means, ingeneral that planning and managing of urban development is aiming to be realistic, decentralized, strategic and problem oriented,arbitrary, not instructive, but understood as a efficient and effective process.Operational support to the this kind of approach are Decision Support IT tools, such as GIS - Geographical Information Systems orES -Expert Systems. Usability of IT tools is based on their capability to perform fast and complicated processing of spatial data andon their flexibility towards specific real problems which are to be solved. In order to use maximum of capabilities of these tools inpractice problem solving it is necessary to adjust their structure and usage to the: - actual conditions of socioeconomic of the contextin which urban development planning and management is performed, - practical demands that managing of urban development has tofore fill, - all participants in urban management process, - institutional mechanisms and procedures.

title DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPERT AND NOVICE DESIGNERS: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUD

summary This chapter investigates the differences in performance between an expert and a novice in terms of their respective strategic knowledge. We examined conceptual design protocols of an expert and a novice, and found that the expert’s cognitive activity and productivity in the design process were almost three times as high as the novice's. The possible reason for this is the difference in their strategic knowledge. The expert’s cognitive processing is structured such that it stays within the limits of human short term memory. This provides empirical evidence for a different strategic knowledge that may be developed with experience. The expert's strategic knowledge allows him to use a smaller number of processes and to form different groupings of processes.

summary 3D Virtual worlds facilitate a level of communication and collaboration not readily available in conventional CAD systems. The integration of virtual worlds and CAD systems using a common data model can make a significant impact on synchronous collaboration and real time multi-user multi-disciplinary modification of building data. By using agents, the integration of 3D virtual worlds and CAD systems can go beyond that of passive data transfer. With sensors and effectors, each agent can interact with its environment by responding to changes in the CAD system or 3D virtual world, which can take the form of an update to the geometry, or as a recommendation to change non geometric information or to propagate changes to other parts of the design. The reasoning process for each agent can vary from a reflexive behaviour in which the agent responds directly to the sensor data to a reflective behaviour in which the agents reasons about its goals and alternatives before making a change to the environment. We demonstrate this approach using ArchiCAD and Active Worlds as the CAD system and the virtual world platform. An EDM database is used as the central repository for storing the representation of the relevant data model. A multi-agent system is developed to connect the virtual world to this database to allow active data sharing. This agent approach can be extended to the integration of other applications and data models.
