summary Metaphor in architecture involves two distinct paradigms of ideation and visualization: architecture as a virtual metaphor of an idea and virtual models of architecture as metaphors of an architectural intention or vision. Digital media is a powerful vehicle for the generation and expression of both paradigms. The dominant applications of digital media in architecture are drafting and computer simulations as virtual constructs of an architectural intention. This paper will focus on the us e of digital media and ideation, a design process which uses metaphor to link idea and form early in the design process.

title Emergent Relations Self-Indexing Media for Case-Based Reasoning

summary A priori indexing systems for case-based reasoning are unlikely to engender interesting, let alone creative, explorations. The problem is that they assume a predetermined knowledge and conceptual structure which neglect new and emergent relations. By allowing multiple labelling of entities, it can be shown that different orders of emergent relations can be derived on the fly without any conventional classification schemes. This gives a flexible, scalable, and most importantly, an associative reasoning system that is more likely to trigger interesting concepts which are technically “categorical errors” but seeds of creative thought.

summary The cyberspace upon physical space forms a new spatial structure to increase the influence on the urban fabric and the concept of space in architecture. Today, digital cities are being developed all over the world. By using a city metaphor, digital cities integrate urban information and create public spaces. However, human how to entry into the new emerging digital cities, to percept themselves in around cities, and then taking shape the recognition of digital city forms? How do digital cities directly connect to physical cities and become an imaginable city? Therefore, we argue that a new spatial analysis theory must be established for digital city, comparing with theories of spatial cognition, to find the explicitly spatial structures and relations in digital city upon physical city. This paper studied by the viewpoint of cognition in order to propose a prototype of metaphor of digital city.

summary This paper documents the theoretical aspect of a research project that deals with the application of an artificial life (AL) approach to engraving coherent paths within the narrative space of video fragments. These paths, which are constituted by the succession of short video segments, represent the best way to juxtapose isolated elements in the overall narrative landscape. In this case the notion of space is being used in a metaphorical way. Once this has been clarified, the concept of “narrative space” is used as a metaphorical representation of a database comprising all the fragmented/autonomous narrations that are being used. Therefore, the creation of an “intelligent” system that will be able to automatically create cinematographic narration is being examined. This project in particular investigates the possibility and the consequences of producing an autonomous cinematographic narration system, in which meaning results from a kind of hypermontage (Hakola, http://www.kromaproductions.net/HYPERMONTAGE.htm: Jan 2003) conditioned by genetic algorithms. A different type of spatial experience emerges when the video fragments used are automatically “put together” by the system. Video as a medium could be considered as representing crystallized shortcuts within physical reality. Since video fragments constitute the database, different elements of constructed space are parts of the same ensemble. From the composition of such fragments, there emerge new paths within the same spatial context and certain spatial experiences are formulated which are different from the ones experienced by actors during the shootings.

summary This paper explains the experience performed by a group of architecture students during a short term worksop, trying to explore the potentials of new approaches and digital technics applied to urban and architectural design. The main purposes were: the inclusion of objetive information and quantitative data of material significance in order to assist the generation and structuring of the design process. The notions of "diagram", "field conditions", "contextual logistic" and "animation" were the conceptual categories employed to approach the dinamic conditions and time related logics as critical aspects of the flexibility associated with material organizations.

summary This article reports on our current explorations on systemizable tasks of architectural design and parametric design supported by rule-based generation methods of spatial configuration alternatives to assist user-design processes of progressive development low-cost dwellings. This exploration is part of an ongoing major research towards an integrated planning support system for low-income housing; we called Esther, which is focused on the development of a network-based set of tools to support logistics of self-designed /-built dwellings life-cycle. Esther addresses the systemized collaborative work between dwellers and specialists during the whole development cycle of dwellings.

summary The dynamics of the city today, their conceptual changes and physical migrations place us in front of an indicial rather than symbolic phenomenology where the visuality of the of the image requires to rethink the conceptual categories for the projectual action. As architects, professors and investigators we find ourselves in front of the necessity to focus from the environment of the investigations of the coetaneous city, the system of the diverse morphologic assemblies of the urban condition, the different intervening graphologic entities and the textualities of the image in the configuration of the urbanity. It is proposed to give continuity to the presentations of investigative short essays of Sigradi 2003 and inquires of the communicational sense approached in 2004, introducing in this event schemes of investigation-teaching, exhibiting proposals of objects and designs in urban environment of the Laboratory of Formal Explorations, emphasizing the revaluation of the areas of obsolescence, the insertion of the novel outdoor public spaces and new emergent forms of the dispersion and territorial decentralization." summary CAD tools are increasing their expressive and geometric power to enable a design process in which the computer model can be used throughout the whole design process for realizing the design. Such a process, in which other media such as physical scale models or drawings are no longer required by necessity to facilitate the design process, can be considered a digital design process. Rather than proposing that such a process is ideal – drawings and scale models should not be discarded – we feel that when taken as a starting point, the digital design process raises a number of new challenges to architectural design that deserve attention. These challenges concern the basic activities in design: exploration of the problem space, creating preliminary solutions, understanding consequences of design decisions, and so forth. In this paper we take the concrete design case of a graduation project that was developed from the start solely in CAD. We identify a number of key issues in that process such as continuous modeling, the model as design, continuous pliability, localized focus, and postponed decision. These issues not only have a technical, CAD-related aspect, but also are connected to architectural design. Most of these aspects are subject of contemporary debate in architectural design. On this basis, we can indicate where CAD is making a potential difference in architectural design.

summary The research project in progress in the School of Architecture at the Izmir Institute of Technology includes documentation and reconstruction (by 3D modeling in electronic media) of damaged and lost early modern buildings in the Izmir region. The research aims to analyze the differences between Izmir modern buildings and Universal Modern Style, and preserve information on architectural heritage for future generations. The project is at the phase of developing an interactive web-based historical database (HizmO) that includes data (information, images, technical drawings, VRML models) and visualization of the findings. This database aims to be a pioneer in Mediterranean Region for exhibition of relations between traditional architecture (especially Mediterranean locality) and modernism, and organization of a network and off-campus learning activity for Mediterranean architecture that serve as a guide for students, researchers and architects. This paper aims at introducing this research and discussing the application of the database “HizmO,” its aims and potential effects on education in architectural history.

summary The influence of digital media and information technology on architectural design education and practice is increasingly evident. The practice and learning of architecture is increasingly aided by and dependant on digital media. Digital technologies not only provide new production methods, but also expand our abilities to create, explore, manipulate and compose space. In contemporary design education, there is a continuous demand to deliver new skills in digital media and to rethink architectural design education in the light of the new developments in digital technology. During the academic years 2001-2003, I had the chance to lead the efforts to promote an effective use of digital media for design education at Department of Architecture, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). Architectural curriculum at JUST dedicated much time for teaching computing skills. However, in this curriculum, digital media was taught in the form of "software use" education. In this context, digital media is perceived and used mainly as a presentation tool. Furthermore, Computer Aided Architectural Design and architectural design are taught in separate courses without interactions between the two.

summary This paper considers transition from physical modelling to digital methods of the creation of architectural forms. Every type of creation has constructed the proper means of expression and its own methodology. The main thesis of this paper is that a specific character of the composition activity of an architect is determined by the modelling methods. As the research on architectural modelling, the two methods of creating spatial architectural forms (cardboard model and computer model) have been compared. Research has been done on the basis of the same exercise for both media. The process of creation proceeded in the same way, too. As the start point students have found the inspiration. Each student presented photos of existing architectural objects and a text, which explained the reasons of the choice. Next steps were sketches of the idea and realisation of the model. The achieved results of creative activity fully confirm the thesis of the research.

summary The paper makes reference to the introduction of a new pedagogical strategy in the teaching of fundamental design in early design studios. The authors recognizes a relationship between the creative process and the media that supports the design process, and proposes the use of 3-dimensional scanners and plotters (rapid prototyping) for interfacing between the use of digital and analogue media. The paper suggests that in such learning environment the students will learn to design without the limitations that analogue or digital media will individually impose in the creative process. The paper ends with an outline for a relevant design exercise.

summary In this paper the possibilities of using the computers at course of architectural compositions are considered. As the start point of the new teaching method of architectural composition we used the course of tradition architectural composition, elaborated at our Faculty. The course of Digital Architectural Composition was finished in 2002. The main goal of using the new digital media for modelling architectural forms was checking the new possibilities of form creation. Traditionally, searching of forms at the conceptual design stage is performed by using sketches, drawings and physical models. Our new method showed that is possible to do the same thing using the computerbased 3D modelling, experiencing no physical limitations of the 'real' substance. At the same time, at the early design stages, when formal value is sought, computer modelling can be done almost intuitively. In ours work we try to find a creative way of using computer - transforming the tool into medium. The attention was paid on exploring the possibilities characteristic for computers and not available with traditional methods of modelling. Architect’s tradition tools are effectively replaced by a computer, which create a new way of doing things.

summary This paper describes a research on building Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development. The objective of the research phase discussed in this paper is to define a prototype of information system that basically facilitates information communication among involved participants in an urban spatial development planning. The system is designed by putting stress on local community. Their spatial perception and the availability of GIS technology in local context become constraints in building the system. Internet becomes the main alternative for information dissemination for this phase. This is also supported by the use of web-based GIS as framework of information system. Through few socialization sessions, the proposed model has indicated a prospected alternative to be seamless communication media among participants. To support an easy-access for local people in using this information system a mechanism of information access has been proposed in the form of local information center.

summary Data representation architecture can be defined as the organizational, functional, experiential, formal, and media-technological order defining the interaction between data, representation, and user. This paper presents an interdisciplinary methodology to develop such architectures in order to significantly improve real time decision making in complex data environments. We have reported in some aspects of this work elsewhere. In this occasion, we will describe our working methodology based on complete interdisciplinarity, the design process and evaluation protocols. We will show work done for Finance and Network Monitoring. Our long-term goal is to design a new generation of data representation architectures that is applicable to diverse fields.

summary Digital visualization addresses representational challenges from within and without architecture. ‘Disciplinary’ digital visualization is used to explore, understand and communicate architectural information associated with the production of buildings. 3D modeling, rendering, animation and VR as well as the power of digital media to permit the seamless integration of various data types are unleashing completely new ways to display architecture. As digital power continues to increase and get cheaper, portability and wi-fi networks take root, and visualization work becomes even more main stream, we can expect growing changes in the way the design process is conducted, buildings are presented and documented, and the public and 3rd party’s demands from professional services. This demands a more conscious research/pedagogies aimed at developing new representation conventions.
