summary The course Alternatives of Design is part of an integral viewpoint that aims to prepare architects from the Master Studies Department in Computing in Architecture (LUZ), in two ways: first, by expanding their perspective about potentialities of using new digital technologies in architecture, and second, by qualifying them to apply this acquired theoretical knowledge in their professional environment. The objectives of this paper are to describe the program of this course and to show products (2003), from the introductory to the final presentation of Virtual Museums of Interactive Sculptures, orientated and supervised both at site and at a distance through the Internet. As a result of this experience, a sample was obtained of virtual museums. design and modelling that illustrates what could be understood as virtual architecture with high degree of interaction, looking for the evolution, motivation and teamwork to incorporate virtual reality non-inmersive technologies in this new architectonic approach.

title Multimedia y diseño arquitectónico diferente (Multimedia and different architectural design)
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary Hearing and touch may be incorporated into visual representation systems that historically covered creative process, now helped by multimedia. During 2002-2003 we developed an experimental design studio that challenged participants to design architecture from words (using their spelling, pronunciation, location, etc.) and through an inquiry based on the "concept of inwardness". Evoking a word from the association of images and texts as well as seizing its potential tactile and hearing dimensions completed what was a very interactive design process. Such process was utilized to generate images and ideas geared to design/make an "installation" to be displayed at art events.

source IEEE Multimedia, July-Sept 2003, Vol. 10, No. 3, pp. 48-56
summary As the amount of visual information stored on electronic media grows, the need for appropriate access mechanisms becomes more critical. Information system developers in fields as varied as agriculture, medicine, and security must not only create systems to represent, store, and process visual content, but also re-examine the indexing procedure and conceive interfaces that make visual information easily accessible. Architectural design, a field overrun by myriad case libraries, manifests this challenge. Cases – specific designs from the past – are a significant source of knowledge in the architectural design field. Using current information technologies, researchers in this field have created a variety of multimedia case collections, storing them on CD-ROM, local networks, and the Internet. Several tools for accessing case collections exist; however most rely on verbal descriptions to index cases. For the collections to support architects during design, cases should not only be represented visually, but should also be accessible through a visual medium. We’ve developed a working prototype of a visual indexing and access mechanism that uses visual keys – small pictogram-like icons expressing an architectural feature. Users can consult an online case base using these keys or create new keys to label and link cases. A pilot study, in which student and professional architects used and evaluated the prototype, supports the need for such a mechanism.

title i-putra.com: a Digital Soft City of Putrajaya
source CAADRIA 2003 [Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 974-9584-13-9] Bangkok Thailand 18-20 October 2003, pp. 225-236
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.225
summary This paper presents our experiment and development of i.Putra.com - a digital soft city of Malaysia's new administrative Capital Putrajaya. This project is funded by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd. Malaysia and was originally developed by the Multimedia University before finally executed by I-Design Sdn. Bhd. It is designed to be an interactive channel for the civic and urban activities that parallel, enhance, compliment, and sometimes 'compete' with physical Putrajaya. Putrajaya's goal is to be the administrative capital for the governance of cyber communities where digital bits rather than physical assets are the primary scarce resource (Putrajaya Holdings, 2002). The guiding principle for i.Putra.com is content, context, community and commerce in which they will be integrated with the city information such as residential, commercial, service and public areas. As the city is being built, i.Putra.com will expand to provide an interactive channel for those who live in, work in, or visit Putrajaya.

title Mediated discourse as a form of architectonic intervention
source LOCAL VALUES in a NETWORKED DESIGN WORLD - ADDED VALUE OF COMPUTER AIDED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, Stellingwerff, Martijn and Verbeke, Johan (Eds.), (2004) DUP Science - Delft University Press, ISBN 90-407-2507-1.
summary We are currently exploring the concept of mediated discourse in relation to an architectonic intervention and urban transformation project in an educational project and elective course. Led by faculty and artists, students are offered the ability to experiment with various media in the design and development of a multidisciplinary discourse. A web-based elearning environment also allows the students’ activities to form part of a larger discourse that takes place among all participants, including the public. In this paper, we describe the concept of mediated discourse and the various dimensions we distinguish, we present the educational project and its various aspects and participants’ roles, we consider the internationalisation of this educational project in a future instance of the course, and we describe the characteristics of the web environment in the context of an educational and software development project for a multimedia learning environment to support group work and discourse.

title Imágenes para la Imaginación arquitectónica (Images for the architectural Imagination)
source SIGraDi 2003 - [Proceedings of the 7th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Rosario Argentina 5-7 november 2003
summary The great impulse in the development of visual means (multimedia) achieved in the last years, demands from us a review of our basic visual capabilities and the necessity to continue developing a methodology for teaching and learning. The advances in technology have radically changed the forms and the functions of the visual component of expression and communication: the image. The aim of this work is to explore the expressive potential of images manipulating their formal components through digital techniques to interpret and/or to re-interpret into architectural object. For this purpose it is suggested a possible procedure to practice and develop the architectural imagination based on the diversity and structural differentiation of shape, starting from the image.
