summary Increasing productivity and efficiency is an important issue in the AEC field. This area is mainly characterized by fragmentation, heterogeneous teams with low lifetimes and many uncertainties. 4D CAD is one of the greatest innovations in recent years. It consists in linking a 3D model of the building with the works planning in order to simulate the construction evolution over time. 4D CAD can fill several needs from design to project management through constructivity analysis and tasks planning (Tommelein 2003). The literature shows that several applications have been proposed to improve the 4D CAD use (Chau et al. 2004; Lu et al. 2007; Seok & al. 2009). In addition, studies have shown the real impact of 4D CAD use in construction projects (Staub-French & Khanzode 2007; Dawood & Sika 2007). More recently, Mahalingam et al. (2010) showed that the collaborative use of 4D CAD is particularly useful during the pre-construction phase for comparing the constructability of working methods, for visually identifying conflicts and clashes (overlaps), and as visual tool for practitioners to discuss and to plan project progress. So the advantage of the 4D CAD collaborative use is demonstrated. Moreover, several studies have been conducted both in the scientific community and in the industrial world to improve it (Zhou et al. 2009; Kang et al. 2007). But an important need that remains in collaborative 4D CAD use in construction projects is about the adaptation of visualization to the users business needs. Indeed, construction projects have very specific characteristics (fragmentation, variable team, different roles from one project to another). Moreover, in the AEC field several visualization techniques can represent the same concept and actors choose one or another of these techniques according to their specific needs related to the task they have to perform. For example, the tasks planning may be represented by a Gantt chart or by a PERT network and the building elements can be depicted with a 3D model or a 2D plan. The classical view (3D + Gantt) proposed to all practitioners in the available 4D tools seems therefore not suiting the needs of all. So, our research is based on the hypothesis that adapting the visualization to individual business needs could significantly improve the collaboration. This work relies on previous ones and aim to develop a method 1) to choose the best suited views for performed tasks and 2) to compose adapted multiple views for each actor, that we call “business views”. We propose a 4 steps-method to compose business views. The first step identifies the users’ business needs, defining the individual practices performed by each actor, identifying his business tasks and his information needs. The second step identifies the visualization needs related to the identified business needs. For this purpose, the user’s interactions and visualization tasks are described. This enables choosing the most appropriate visualization techniques for each need (step 3). At this step, it is important to describe the visualization techniques and to be able to compare them. Therefore, we proposed a business view metamodel. The final step (step 4) selects the adapted views, defines the coordination mechanisms and the interaction principles in order to compose coordinated visualizations. A final step consists in a validation work to ensure that the composed views really match to the described business needs. This paper presents the latest version of the method and especially presents our latest works about its first and second steps. These include making more generic the business tasks description in order to be applicable within most of construction projects and enabling to make correspondence with visualization tasks.

title On the Limitations of Shape Grammars: Comments on Aaron Fleisher’s Article “Grammatical Architecture?”

summary Shape grammars were introduced by Gips and Stiny in 1972. Since then, there have been many articles and books written by them and their associates. In 1992, Aaron Fleisher, a professor at the School of Planning, MIT, wrote a critique of their work in an article titled “Grammatical Architecture?” published in the journal Environment and Planning B. According to him, Gips, Stiny and later Mitchell, propose a hypothesis that states that shape grammars are presumed to represent knowledge of architectural form, that grammars are “formable,” and that there is a visual correspondence to verbal grammar. The strong version of “the hypothesis requires that an architectural form be equivalent to a grammar.” Fleisher considers these hypotheses unsustainable, and argues his case by analyzing the differences between language, and architecture, and by dealing with the concepts of lexicons, syntax and semantics. He concludes by stating that architectural design is negotiated in two modalities: the verbal and the visual, and that equivalences are not at issue; they do not exist. If there is such thing as a language for design, it would provide the means to maintain a discussion of the consequences in one mode, of the state and conditions of the other. Fleisher’s observations serve as the basis of this paper, a tribute to him, and also an opportunity to present an outline to an alternate approach or hypothesis to shape grammars, which is “nonlinguistic” but “generative,” in the sense that it uses production rules. A basic aspect of this hypothesis is that the only similarity between syntactic rules in language and some rules in architecture is that they are recursive.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary We have developed a rather uncommon way of understanding and teaching architectual design and the use of computers in this process: Our idea consists in defining the design process not only as finding a nice shape for an object like a building or a new car. We see designing and planning as the ""art"" of solving complex problems. This implies, that the design process is not the mere use of methods or tools to solve a given problem, but the process of understanding the roots of the problem and finding a suitable and often alternative and unusual solution. The way we teach this process is enhanced by the use of computers and webbased applications. In this paper we will describe the key elements of the planning and design theory used as well as the methods for teaching these ideas to graduate students. Lastly, we point out the experience that came from the practical implementation.

Combining with psychophysical landscape evaluation (LE), photogrammetry and other digital 3D visualization, GIS provides quantitative data, scientific visualization and visual simulation for planning decision making.

title Perspective Vienna – A Comparison of Planning Scenarios and Real Development

summary With the suspension of national boarders in unions of nations, cities and their regions gain in significance for the economic, social and cultural development. This is particularly valid for Vienna, which lies close to the eastern boarder of the European Union, which should fall with the enlargement of EU in the near future. Of prominent importance is therefore to obtain a comprehensive understanding between proposed and defined aims for an urban development, the related measures and their extent ofimplementations and their actual or real effects. This paper attempts to give a strategic analysis of the Viennese urban and traffic development programs, from 1962, 1972, 1984 and 1994, on the one hand, and the data analysis of the statistical year books beginning from 1960 until 2000, on the other. The results show that adjustments have been made not only in response to certain trends, but also to a change of philosophy of urban development. It can be seen that certain assumptions of, for example, economic and transport measures can have the opposite outcome in relation to the intended objectives. Hence, one main question remains to beanswered: How should Vienna deal with the challenges ahead, to secure and foster a sustainable development under such circumstances on a long-term basis. In this respect, some measures are given, which should make it possible to overcome successfully these challenges.

summary Design agents are rational agents that monitor and modify elements of a designed environment. Special characteristics of design agents include the ability to reason about patterns and concepts, and the ability to act autonomously in modifying or changing the design to achieve their own goals. 3D Virtual Worlds are multi-user distributed systems that provide a designed environment and a closed world environment for studying design agents in a multiagent system. We present a model for a design agent reasoning process and a model for constructing a memory of the agent’s knowledge and interaction with a virtual world. The reasoning process includes sensation, perception, conception, hypothesizing, and planning a sequence of actions. Each agent has a constructed memory: a dynamic and changing view of the designed world that is determined by the agents sense data and reasoning. The agents construct and maintain a representation of the relevant objects in the world using a Function- Behavior-Structure formalism in order to reason about the intended and actual functions of the designed objects in the world. We have implemented this agent model by extending the Active Worlds platform so that each object in the 3D world can have agency. We illustrate the model with a door agent and a multi-agent room that reason about the use of the 3D world.

title Virtual environments in architecture and planning design: 4 possible approaches

summary Advancements in information retrieval (IR), local and wide area networks (LAN, WAN) and the Internet, human-computer interaction (HCI), and virtual reality (VR) technologies have enabled the emergence and availability of affordable real-time computer data visualisation and manipulation systems that can be deployed and interfaced to most Computer Aided Design (CAD) software systems. However, the rapid advancement and adoption of information visualisation in different areas is currently challenging VR system designers to formulate and deploy strategies and tools to effectively visualise, navigate and effectively communicate various types of information within a virtual environment (VE). A further problem relates to the fact that even within a single area or application the requirements are still diverse to the extent that different approaches and technologies still need to be employed before a satisfactory solution is reached.

This paper presents four possible approaches in identifying and designing effective VR systems for architecture and planning design to allow the user to effectively communicate and share their experiences and ideas in a collaborative manner. It is also proposed that VEs should look beyond plain representations and reproductions of the real world environments that they portray and bear higher interpretation and expression values. The value of eliciting structuring and interfacing information and knowledge to a VE is also highlighted, as is the need for efficient database systems and CAD systems capable of exchanging information and data with VEs. Current efforts in prolonging the lifetime of VEs are being examined through four case studies that highlight the ever-escalating requirements that currently face VR researchers.

summary How come, that there is often a gap between what is considered good urban design and the built reality of the urban environment? This is the question which the thesis aims to investigate. It has often been stated that urban development can no longer be controlled, and the reason for this has been ascribed, among other things, to the power of the market, postmodern pluralism, or simply to the increased complexity of society. Yet, to decline on the capacity of urban design to guide urban development on such accounts, is to give up on urban design altogether. Rather, if urban design is incapable of achieving what it is aiming at, something must be wrong with it. Thus, the basic argument of the thesis is, that the answer to this question must be sought within urban design itself, rather than within the context in which it operates. In order to approach the research question, the thesis is organized as a twofold investigation, consisting of both an empirical study of the practice of urban design – in the form of a detailed case study of two urban development histories – and a study of the theoretical foundations for this practice. As urban design is regarded as an interdisciplinary activity, the theoretical study is organized as a threefold investigation of urban design theory, planning theory, as well as urban theory. As urban design in practice must consider what the built environment should be like as well as how it is developed, it must include normative as well as procedural considerations. Thus, the issues of normativity and process are central to the understanding of urban design. These issues therefore constitute the foci of both the empirical and the theoretical study.

summary Abstract: As a reaction to societal, economic and technological changes, new forms of cooperation are applied in projects of urbanand regional development. We argue that this trend can significantly be amplified by the use of information and communicationtechnologies (ICT). Through ICT more persons can participate in a more focused, open, fairer and more transparent way. Complexinformation can be analyzed, the process is documented, reproducible and comparable. Methods and media can be combined in avery flexible way to design efficient and effective processes.To the extent that projects are stored in a knowledge base, knowledge management tools can exploit accumulating experience tocontinuously improve a methodology for cooperation in spatial development.With the introduction of ICT, existing cooperative methods in government and planning should not simply be copied to the newmedia without further modifications. Electronic techniques (synchronous or asynchronous, distributed or not, audio-, video or textbasedmedia) can be used for different traditional methods in different phases of the process, and they can be combined in completelynew ways, leading to new methods and workflows. Only if this potential of ICT is taken into account by restructuring the processitself, cooperative planning processes lead to informed high-quality decisions in less time.Our approach aims to explore the opportunities that new ICT offers for new cooperation methods in government and planning –beyond the extension of traditional methods to electronic communication media. It acknowledges the need for experimentation andan evaluation, not only concerning isolated methods but the combination of methods.

summary The projects ‘I, Robot’, ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ and ‘Robots House’ are three examples of design projects at the institute for industrial building production (ifib) that illustrate the same didactical approach for the training of students. The common principle is characterised by the confrontation of students of architecture with a kind of task, that almost is not related to architecture and that seems rather strange at the first glance. The background of the task allways has a strong technical regard and is defined by other departments. So already the understanding requires an exchange with some experts of these departments and the solution even a close cooperation with them. In most cases the partners are from the field of mechanical engineering or computer science. The common theme in these three projects is robotics, a forward-looking discipline especially interesting because of its wide complexity as well beyond a purely technical comprehension. In the Project ‘I, Robot’ multidisciplinary teams of students used the Not Quite C developer kit and the Lego Mindstorm Robotics system to develop robots for an indoor rally. This project is repeated annualy at ifib and at RWTH Aachen. In the Project ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ students of architecture designed and produced a spacial structure and cover for an existing and running humanoid service robot. This robot was developed by the Institute for Industrial Applications of Informatics and Microsystems (IAIM) of Prof. Dr. Dillmann for experimental purposes regarding learning strategies for service robots. In the Project ‘Robots House’ finaly students of the university cooperate with students of the university of applied science to find a concernment of architecture by today’s and future robots. The background is the demand for service robots in homes of handicapped or elder people triggered by the demographic changes; the approach is to consider today’s service robots as well as handicapped in a certain manner. The project is accompanied by the expert for handicapped accessible planning, Prof. Dr. Loeschcke and by scientists of the IAIM around Dr. Markus Ehrenmann.

title HOUSING TYPES AND CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS IN CASE-BASED DESIGN

summary Expert designers typically refer to and re-use past solutions for recurring design problems. Case-based design (CBD) attempts to transfer this natural design reasoning process to computer-aided design using artificial intelligence (AI) methods and databases. The housing design domain is particularly suited for applying the CBD approach because the traditional method of home design already makes extensive use of precedents and solutions are highly standardized in that industry, at least in the U.S. This paper introduces classificatory types of housing precedents that provide a basis for a structured knowledge representation that supports case retrieval. The classificatory types gives to a research prototype an efficient classification and indexing mechanism that combines form- and component-based features and remains flexible (i.e. can be modified and customized by users), and a retrieval mechanism that uses the indexing mechanism.

It is based on a situated view of knowledge as being grounded in individual experience, which emphasises its applicability and teleology. The paper describes situated knowledge and expertise using the function-behaviour-structure (FBS) schema. It then outlines how the FBS schema can be used to model expertise of temporary teams as emerging from the interaction of individual experts.

summary The publicly and privately funded national R&D program ‘Digital Construction’ was initiated in 2003 in order to establish a common platform for interchanging digital information and to stimulate digital integration in the Danish building industry. This paper explores the relation between visions, strategies and tools formulated in the ‘Digital Construction’ program, and the first experiences made from implementing the 3D work method part of the program in an ongoing building project. The discussions in the paper are placed in the complex field between choosing strategies for integrating information and communication technologies on national level, and the effects of these strategies on real life building projects.

summary This paper describes a research on building Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development. The objective of the research phase discussed in this paper is to define a prototype of information system that basically facilitates information communication among involved participants in an urban spatial development planning. The system is designed by putting stress on local community. Their spatial perception and the availability of GIS technology in local context become constraints in building the system. Internet becomes the main alternative for information dissemination for this phase. This is also supported by the use of web-based GIS as framework of information system. Through few socialization sessions, the proposed model has indicated a prospected alternative to be seamless communication media among participants. To support an easy-access for local people in using this information system a mechanism of information access has been proposed in the form of local information center.

summary This paper describes two complementary European research projects that share common interests and goals.The work described is intended to facilitate city analysis and support decision-making. The first project focuses on the distribution, access and ease of use of city data. The system allows access to historical data concerning key buildings in Liverpool, England, via a suite of web-based tools and a palmtop device. The second project looks at extending the functionality of traditional computer aided design (CAD) software to enable geometric and semantic data to be combined within a single environment. The system allows those involved in city planning to better understand the past and present development pattern of an area so that their decisions on future proposals are better informed.The paper concludes by describing a system that integrates particular aspects of the two projects, and the potential that this integration can bring.This new work provides mobile access to historical city development data, current city information and tools to support urban project development.

summary Highway seems to be more an issue of traffic planning than of urban design. But the highway can be a very important factor for the modern city pattern. Highways shape the spatial form of the fractal city. The modern highway can define new cores outside and “interior edges” within the city. Seen as a planning tool, highways are the great neglected opportunity in city and regional design. The 1st Architecture Biennial, 1ab, taking place from May 2003 to July 2003 in Rotterdam, explores the creative potentials of modern highways worldwide. An international research team discovered the spatial functions of highways in modern agglomerations. This lecture will give an overview of the results of the worldwide analyses and the design projects that had been undertaken. Both authors are members of the German research team. The German team examined the A 42 running through the Ruhrgebiet, a former coal and steal area in western Germany. The Ruhr Area is converting from an industrially orientated region to an agglomeration of high technology and science. But the regional image remains the same due to the fact that the changes cannot be seen, neither physically, nor from the road. Here, the highway could be used as a catalyst supporting and structuring the spatial changes to make them more legible for the people of Rhine-Ruhr. The nature becomes the most important tool of highway design. Landscape forms a linkage between the different cities of the region. Together with the A 40 and other local highways the region becomes the most important (and largest) public space of the new Rhine-Ruhr. The highway seen as a work of urban art can be designed only from the perspective of the driving car.
