summary ¿Estamos presenciando un nuevo paradigma hacia otra forma de concebir la matemática?. El presente ensayo pretende indagar, a través del análisis y discusiones sobre diferentes obras literarias, cinematográficas y proyectos arquitectónicos, clásicos y contemporáneos, la relación entre la arquitectura y la literatura a partir de las estructuras matemáticas que los sustentan y cómo estas se han modificado o evolucionado a partir de los cambios tecnológicos de las últimas décadas. Relacionaremos la literatura y la arquitectura contemporánea pos revolución digital, con sus propiedades de nolinealidad y de fragmentación. Nuestra línea de investigación se centra en cuáles pueden ser las aportaciones esencialmente nuevas de la cultura digital a la producción de la arquitectura y la literatura, partiendo de su base estructural. La era informática trae con ella implicaciones que desestabilizan los conceptos tradicionales de espacio y tiempo. Nos preguntamos cuáles son los cambios en las estructuras textuales a partir de la era digital, cuáles son las nuevas estructuras geométricas, cómo influyen estas nuevas geometrías en la arquitectura, en el cine y en la literatura, en esta era de la información y qué rol ocupa la matemática en este cambio. El desarrollo de las ciencias contemporánea ha generado teorías que transforman nuestro conocimiento del universo. Caos, Teoría de la complejidad, Fractales son términos que caracterizan estos conceptos. En arquitectura estas teorías han tenido importancia en la producción de arquitectura "no-lineal" por medio de el uso de computadoras, especialmente en trabajos de arquitectos como Frank Gehry, Zevi Hecker, Greg Lynn, ARM y O.C.E.A.N UK, entre otros. En esta época informatizada la relación de la arquitectura con las demás ciencias (como la física y la matemática), con otros códigos como el lenguaje (por ejemplo en la narración) y con los límites del pensamiento filosófico, pueden hallarse hoy, tanto en el repertorio del deconstructivismo, en el repertorio “minimalista”, como en las abstracciones de los jóvenes nacidos con la computadora, que emulan cintas de Moebius, topologías “no euclideanas”, “estructuras líquidas” o ya en el campo de la literatura formas virtuales como en Calvino o dimensiones paralelas, bifurcadas, etc. como en Cortázar o Borges. Sin embargo, podemos preguntarnos si esta proliferación exuberante es el desarrollo de un organismo sólidamente construido, que adquiere cada día más cohesión y unidad en su propio crecimiento o si, por el contrario, no es más que el signo exterior de una tendencia a un fraccionamiento cada vez mayor, debido a la naturaleza misma de las matemáticas y si éstas no se estarán convirtiendo en una torre de Babel de disciplinas autónomas, aisladas unas de otras, tanto en sus principios como en sus métodos e incluso en su lenguaje. En una palabra, hoy, en esta tendencia, ¿estamos presenciando un nuevo paradigma hacia otra forma de concebir la matemática?.

summary This research proposes to support the reading of physical ambiences by the development of a representational technique which compiles, in a numerical interface, two types of data: sensory and filmic. These data are recorded through the use of a portable array equipped with sensors (Potvin 1997, 2002, 2004) as well as the acquisition of Video information of the moving environment. The compilation of information is carried out through a multi-media approach, by means of a program converting the environmental data into dynamic diagrams, as well as the creation of an interactive interface allowing a possible diffusion on the Web. This technique, named APMAP/Video, makes it possible to read out simultaneously spatial and environmental diversity. It is demonstrated through surveys taken at various seasons and time of the day at the new Caisse de dépôt et de placement headquarters in Montreal which is also the corpus for a SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) research grant on Environmental Adaptability in Architecture (Potvin et al. 2003-2007). This case study shows that the technique can prove of great relevance for POEs (Post Occupancy Evaluation) as well as for assistance in a new design project.

title STUDY ON COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN SUPPORT OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES

summary The research presented in this thesis describes a computer-aided design support of traditional architectural theories. Traditional architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architecture: proportion, symmetry, colour, harmony and so on. In particular, the aesthetic aspect of these theories has been one of many important architectural aspects, and which is concerned with the field of architecture in determining the beauty of architectural form. The most significant role of the traditional theories in architecture is to maintain unity, to avoid chaos and then to achieve harmony in a design, using some specific design principles. However, current technology-guided constructions tend to neglect often the importance of these theories due to the standardization of building elements, due to mechanically-prepared construction and the reducing completion costs, etc. Thus, this research proposes a design support system as a design assistant that gives an intelligent advice on architectural design, using analytical design- and ordering- principles of traditional theories for the optimization of the architectural design from the aesthetic perspective. To evaluate the aesthetic quality of an architectural design, this system is implemented in the AutoCAD environment, using the AutoLISP. It is applied so as to explain and develop aesthetic qualities of a design. Designs proposed by this system include optimum designs, which are based on the traditional architectural theories, and new ones which can be in future connected to information models. To do this, the definition of information about building elements is accomplished by using the neutral format EXPRESS and EXPRESS-G for such application systems. The results of the application system are presented, such as the easily generating and quickly conceptualising of an object model, the checking of the aesthetic value of the design during the various design phases, the helping to find direction during rational searching for a solution. The user can easily appreciate the usefulness of the proposed system as a set of tools for searching for rational architectural aesthetics and formal solutions at different design-stages. It is to be hoped that a new "traditional" fundamental of architecture, such as the proposed system, incorporating CAAD systems, will find its place among new technological methods in the AEC industry and so help to bridge the gap between the value of traditional architecture and CAAD systems.

summary The architecture graphics presentation, showing three-dimensional space designed by the architect from bidimensional elements, besides being insufficient. But, just the three-dimensional presentation of this space does no guarantee its total visualization. It is necessary a way in which the observer can visualize and interact with it. For that reason it is needed to use the digital space. But, it can not be limited to the presentation of three-dimensional objects, because it brings the possibility of communication and information transmission through cyberspace. So, an investigation was done through bibliographical references and questions to architects to study how and what the graphics elements should be demonstrate for the correct visualization. Next, with those information, it was developed a prototype site to the visualization of the internal spaces of a design used as an example and after that this prototype was verified in a group of architects and a group of non-expert people.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary The proposal of a model to present contents, intends to consolidate the cooperation among the fields of knowledge that will contribute to introduce this presentation in virtual environments. This proposal intends to continue the work developed in the ALFA T-GAME Project (Teaching Computer Graphics and Multimedia), financed by the European community. The results of this ALFA Project, mainly for architecture, acquired a special meaning due to the relevant presence of images in different specialized courses, that require a synthesis for its versatility and interaction in digital means. The majority of the materials produced is in the early stages of the development and structure of contents. In this way, the project will seek results that contribute to the new ways of presenting the contents that collaborate with the Architecture teaching/learning, from the interchange of the acquired experience, both in e-learning technology and the disciplinary area of Architecture.

summary For planning in existing built contexts, the building survey is the starting point for initial planning proposals, for the diagnosis and documentation of building damages, for the creation of objectives catalogues, for the detailed design of renovation and conversion measures and for ensuring fulfilment of building legislation, particularly by change of use and refitting. An examination of currently available IT-tools shows insufficient support for planning within existing contexts, most notably a deficit with regard to information capture and administration. In ongoing research at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (SFB524- Collaborative research center 524 “Materials and Structure in Revitalization of Buildings”) methods and techniques of revitalisation are being investigated (SFB 524, 2004). A special branch of SFB524- D2 entitled “Planning-Relevant Digital Building Surveying and Information Systems” is investigating possibilities of computer-aided building survey and communication platforms for architects and civil engineers. This paper discusses the concept for a modular surveying system (basic concept, structuring of collected data, separation of geometry from semantic data, and separation into sub-systems) and the prototypical realisation of a system for the complete support of the entire building surveying process for existing buildings. The project aims to contribute to the development of a planning system for existing buildings.

Actually the architecture project involves a great number of professionals for its realization that demands an information capacity of coordination in an efficient and orderly way. This activity is done using collaborative systems to exchange the data of the projects with the people being in different places and in a different time. For the improvement of these collaborative enviroments and for the conception of new systems it is necessary the investigation of what happens in the collaboration among the professionals. To analyse the collaboration this research is based in six parameters: Involved agents, Tools used in communication, Received and delivery Materials, Stages of Project, Coordination and use of the Internet.

summary This project . presented in the form of an artistic installation . focuses on the social, economic and political causes of hunger, its challenges, consequences and possible solutions. Those issues are discussed through the views, ideas and perceptions of 100 people we interviewed. People who live in diverse economic contexts, who face different challenges, eat different types of food . or who don.t have anything to eat. They discuss their different needs, desires, requisites and willingness. They talk about their awareness (or their lack of knowledge) of the dramatic figures of hunger, they share their thoughts and ideas on how we can reduce or eliminate hunger, on what are they doing for that to happen, and on what they believe can be done. We believe that a more realistic framework of understanding of hunger enables people to make real choices, choices that can contribute to ending this spreading human suffering.

summary Decisions taken at early stages of building design have a significant effect on the planning steps for the entire lifetime of the project as well as the performance of the building throughout its lifecycle (MacLeamy 2004). Building Information Modelling (BIM) could bring forward and enhance the planning and decision-making processes by enabling the direct reuse of data hold by the model for diverse analysis and simulation tasks (Borrmann et al. 2015). The architect today besides a couple of simplified simulation tools almost exclusively uses his know-how for evaluating and comparing design variants in the early stages of design. This paper focuses on finding new ways to facilitate the use of analytical and simulation tools during the important early phases of conceptual building design, where the models are partially incomplete. The necessary enrichment and proper detailing of the design model could be achieved by means of dialogue-based interaction concepts with analytical and simulation tools through adaptive detailing strategies. This concept is explained using an example scenario for design process. A generic description of the aimed dialog-based interface to various simulation tools will also be discussed in this paper using an example scenario.
