summary This focus this paper is the translation of a digital information model that defines an object’s surface properties and its connection to that which is real or physical. This research, while early in its investigation, seeks to explore architecture and digital design as a material process. The direct connection to output devices such as computer-numerically controlled routers provide a unique opportunity for controlled variation and serial differentiation and seeks to exploit mass customization rather than standardization. Through a series of studies the process from design to machine file to finish product is explored. This connection to digitally driven fabrication equipment creates within the design process an opportunity to realize ones designs both digitally and materially.

The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

The realisation basis is provided by the first-person shooter game `Quake III`. The idea is to create personal, demanding virtual realities in which individuals can meet and communicate via the Internet. The implementation of Avatars enables the individual to receive visual feedback from the chat partner in real time. In order to create an appropriate environment to experiment, a game was developed to promote and also provoke these requirements purposefully.

summary The paper traces the development of a digital hanging chain modeler in Java inspired by Antonio Gaudi’s physical hanging chain models. More importantly, it demonstrates how fabrication schemas for physical mockups of the digitally simulated hanging chain can be linked to the real time form finding simulation. Fabrication output is an integral part of the iterative process and not a post-design process. The current implementation is still limited and currently requires programming for reconfiguration. The paper proposes the link of form-finding and fabrication finding and lays out several examples and first steps of how to do so.

The combination of real-time 3D video and blue-c technology for a distributed shopping experience in shared virtual shops is described. IN: SHOP illustrates an approach to enhance physical environments in shopping areas and connects geographically distant persons. These technologies offer new architectural design possibilities. The traditional understanding of location, space, and time may be redefined. Interactive spaces are being designed, modified and experienced. We believe that information technologies have an impact on buildings and architecture.

summary Having as topic for the conference the tile with keywords such as culture, technology, and architecture, we were expecting to find out the relationships among those three domains, and how they are interrelated in this fast growing information society. This triangular relationship has been established based on the increasingly noticeable paradigm shift from traditional computer-aided design research in architecture to research in diverse areas such as virtual environments and communities and interactive smart spaces, including the consideration of sociocultural aspects along with the technological issues. Making virtual environments focuses on creating a new, yet virtual world where people can inhabit or visit for diverse purposes. The virtual architecture becomes a medium for diverse communications as well as digital contents for the new media industry. For example, virtual heritage projects introduce a new way of preserving historic buildings and sites. At the same time, interactive smart spaces often combine two different worlds: real and virtual worlds. Growing digital technologies enables us to create intelligent physical spaces where computers are ubiquitous and invisible in space, and thus human beings can interact with architectural spaces, not necessarily with computers directly. At this point, issues on virtual reality (VR) and human computer interactions (HCI) become architects' and designers' concerns in socio-cultural aspects. The proceedings of the Nineth International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia, presents 74 papers which were selected from the 131 submissions through a blind review of 58 international reviewers. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers and the final acceptance was based on their recommendations.

title Identification and Visualisation of Construction Activities’ Workspace Conflicts Utilising 4D CAD/VR Tools

summary This work addresses the problem arising on all construction sites: the occurrence of workspace interference between construction activities. From a site space planning context, this problem can lead to an inevitable roadblock to the progress of the scheduled construction operations. In real situations, when the spatial congestions occur, they could reduce productivity of workers sharing the same workspace and may cause health and safety hazard issues. The aim of this paper is on presenting a computer-based method and developed tool to assist site managers in the assignment and identification of workspace conflicts. The author focuses on the concept of ‘visualising space competition’ between the construction activities. The concept is based on a unique representation of the dynamic behaviour of activity workspace in 3D space and time. An innovative computer-based tool dubbed PECASO (Patterns Execution and Critical Analysis of Site-space Organisation) has been developed. The emerging technique of 4D (3D + time) visualisation has been chosen to yield an interesting 4D space planning and visualisation tool. A multi-criteria function for measuring the severity of the workspace congestions is designed, embedding the spatial and schedule related criteria. The paper evaluates the PECASO approach in order to minimise the workspace congestions, using a real case study. The paper concludes that the PECASO approach reduces the number of competing workspaces and the conflicting volumes between occupied workspace, which in turn produces better assessment to the execution strategy for a given project schedule. The system proves to be a promising tool for 4D space planning; in that it introduces a new way of communicating the programme of work.

summary “Smart” Homes (domestic environments in which we are surrounded by interconnected technologies that are more or less responsive to our presence and actions) seem increasingly plausible with the emergence of powerful mobile computing devices and real time context aware computing (Edwards and Grinter, 2001). Research at premier technology universities have given birth to home “labs” that experiment with sensors, cameras and monitors to study physical, behavioral and social consequences of such technologies on occupants of such homes. One of the most important problems that “smart” homes will eventually help to address is that of spiraling costs of healthcare. Using ubiquitous technologies to motivate healthy decisions can help prevent the onset of myriad medical problems (Intille, 2004). Moving the focus of attention from the health centers and hospitals to the working home through such technology interventions would eventually lead to decreased financial pressure on the traditional healthcare system. This paper examines the challenges and opportunities in the design of “smart” technologies for preventive healthcare in rural homes. It summarizes findings from current ethnographic and demographic studies; and examines other contemporary research in the field of ubiquitous computing and “smart” homes. With the help of these studies, the paper lists different technical, social and functional challenges that we as designers may have to consider before designing “smart” homes for rural populations.

summary This paper reports on the design of spatial sounds for information environments. This research primarily relates to developing the sound component for a software prototype of a presentation environment that integrates realtime three-dimensional graphics with user interaction. For this project sound designers were engaged to examine the design of spatial sounds to examine the issues of dimensionality within presentation environments. The sound design work utilised a range of sound techniques: real world recording and modulation, static sound collections and DSP (Digital Signal Processing). The two main themes for the research were exploring sound as both thematic and navigational tools, utilising concepts that address the issues of multi-dimensionality within a time based presentation environment.

summary This paper reviews existing research into real-time visualization in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture and describes a University of Lincoln project exploring the application of this technology to participatory design. Staff at the School of Architecture have used 'Virtools Development', a computer game prototyping package, to help residents in Hull, UK, to visualize and interact with a design proposal for a 'home zone' in their neighbourhood, arrived at as part of a wider participatory process. This paper evaluates computer game technology in relation to more conventional participatory tools. It is difficult to justify using the technology to create simple 'walk-through' simulations of design proposals, it argues. In such cases, the benefits real-time visualization offers over non-interactive video are largely outweighed by the technical difficulties involved in the production and use of real-time environments.

summary This paper explains the results of a collaborative research project between Multimedia University (Malaysia) and Innotive Corporation (Korea) to manage, design a multimedia archiving system and visualising knowledge for the students or the users in the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University. This research introduces InnotiveBrowser technology, a high performance multimedia display software that enhances the ability of user to search and discover digital content. The unique result of this method is that the images to be viewed are not limited to available RAM, instead the content utilises the available storage directly from the disk (hard drives). In other words, the larger the size of the hard disk, the greater the number of content information can be stored and displayed. This system is employed with Virtual Reality (VR) techniques particularly imparting viewing technology (pixel-ondemand) and navigation strategy to increase the viewing speed of multimedia information in real-time over the Internet, broadband and even via PDA platforms. This research hopes to set the benchmark for multimedia archiving system that can be applied in other CAD, CAAD or most of the design or production-based teaching and learning environment. The early findings of this research have been patented and this paper will demonstrate the research ideas and explain how we implement and customise the technology and content development in the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University.

summary The constant advances in the use of computers to simulate light over the past few decades, has led computer-aided rendering to become increasingly photorealistic. However, the rendering is still processor-intensive and time-consuming, difficult to generate in real time. Design students need to be well versed in the depiction of the effects of light in an environment, crucial to spatial visualization. With increasing computing power, advanced algorithms and increased realism, the central pedagogical issue in their use is not what computers can do for us today, but what and how we can make them do what we do better. We have to be careful in not getting seduced by the advancing technology but use it innovatively to build students into better designers. This paper discusses a project demonstrating the apparent potential of computers for spatial visualization and design exploration of light and space, in their present stage. The project shows a departure from the traditional methods of using computers or of teaching lighting in a design school. Computers are used by students to especially create flashy imagery. On the other hand, lighting is explained in clinical terms without exploration of its experiential qualities. This exercise helped the students to develop a better understanding of the physics of light from the method most familiar and expected of students – visual. The project deems it more important to have a quick means to produce an overview of the implication of the design choices than to provide precise information regarding a hypothetical final solution. Hence, after creating the lighting in the space based on the desired experiential qualities, the illumination can be conveyed to a lighting expert for detailed quantitative computations. The project results are shown and outcomes discussed.

summary The purpose of this research is to build a simulating operation system of automatic guided vehicles (AGV) at a construction site, which including (1) construction path planning system (2) real-time vision information, and (3) simulation system of automatic guided vehicles at the construction site. This paper proposes an ef- ficient method that provides VR-based AGV path guidance with Caligari Truspace 3D software and Python Script. We designed an interactive vision information interface by using LEGO Mindstorms Vision Command combined with Visual Basic ActiveX; and also built an automatic guided vehicle with the functions of obstacle avoidance by LEGO Robotics Invention System. The majority of this research is to develop an effective construction site management model, and develop a construction path planning and a real-time system.

summary The aim of the proposed project is to develop methods for the simulation of space utilisation. Up to now no methods for building performance evaluation are available which involve the occupants of the building. Instead, assumptions are made about people’s movement through space and their responses to the environment. These assumptions are input for important design decisions (e.g. capacity of elevators, width of corridors, escape routing) sophisticated calculations (e.g. cooling and lighting calculations) and simulations (e.g. airflow simulation, evacuation simulation). Reliable data on human movement are very scarce and can be valuable input to research in other research areas. New computer technologies allow for dynamic simulations that will provide insight into the building to be built. The research project builds upon existing methods that need to be tailored and/or extended to apply them to the building domain and to support real-time simulation.

summary The paper presents a new modeling technique for architectural design. Rind modeling provides for the easy creation of surfaces resembling peeled and punctured rinds. We show how the method‘s two main steps of 1) creation of a shell or crust 2) opening holes in the crust by punching or peeling can be encapsulated into a real time semi-automatic interactive algorithm. We include a number of worked examples, some by students in a special modeling workshop that demonstrate the ease with which a large variety of intricate rind shapes can be created. Rind modeling method allows us developing a user-friendly tool for designers and architects. The new tool extends the abilities of polygonal modeling and allows designers to work on structured and consistent models for architectural design purposes. Rind modeling gives architects and designers a processing flexibility. It can be used in conceptual modeling during the early design phase. It can also be efficiently used for creating variety of shell structures for architectural design.

summary One of the most important aspects architects need to consider fairly early on is that of energy saving, cost, thermal comfort and the effect on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. At present, during the early design stage of a building, different options are assessed using simple tools (tables, graphs and software) that contain a large number of assumptions the very nature of which can bias choice or possibly lead to an inappropriate solution. It can be argued that the only way to provide a rational assessment of options is to use calculation methods that represent in detail the physical processes involved; this usually involves the use of dynamic thermal models. Furthermore if this tool is also used during detailed design it would introduce a consistency that is normally absent from the analytical design process. Many designers are of the opinion that, because not all details are known, then such tools are not suitable for application at early stages in the design. This view can be challenged because, even at the concept stage, a great deal is known about a building. This paper aims to show that a general description of a building can be used to generate sufficient data to drive a valid analysis using a detailed thermal model at the early sketch stage of the design process. The paper describes the philosophy, methodology and the interface developed to achieve this aim. The interface guides the user through the input process using a series of screens giving options for keywords used to describe the building; comprehensive default data built into the software are then attached to these keywords. The resulting data file is a building description that is the best possible interpretation of the design intent. This can then be used to assess options and guide towards a final design.

summary (pdf file in greek)- With the aid of the acoustic simulation plate-form named « CAD-Acoustic » which is developed in the context of PhD and adapted on the AutoCAD system, this paper presents the halls acoustic results (RT60) of Elmia (Sweden) and Opera of Bordeaux (France) in relation to acoustic measurements and results of other acoustic simulation software (Odeon, Epidaure). In parallel, it presents geometrical simulations of the modelised halls’ acoustic behavior, such as the 3D reflections of the acoustic rays from selected surface, the 3D view of the materials’ arrangements through surfaces’ coloring, the measurement of the selected absorbing / reflecting surfaces in m2 and the individual or massive absorption coefficients’ assignment to the surfaces. Finally, with the aid of « CAD-Acoustic » the acoustic results are compared in a graphic manner in relation to the ideal acoustic rates, a presentation which is a kind of an “ architectural translation of the acoustic results” taking into account several architectural elements.
