title Integrating Design and Construction with Wearable Computers

summary Wearable computers can help bridge the gap betweendesign and construction. They can integrate thesetraditionally separate cultures by improving the flowof information between them. Using a wearablecomputer, design and construction personnel can nowexchange design information quickly and continuouslybetween the point of work on the construction siteand the remote design office. The improved iterationbetween design and construction and much strongerconnection between design personnel andconstruction site afforded by wearable computers maypoint the way to a new kind of integratedarchitectural process. In this study, the goal was todetermine the value of wearable computers inintegrating design and construction by measuringspecific performance characteristics.The resultsinclude findings on productivity, rework andcommunication quality. They reveal that wearablecomputers can improve communication quality andreduce rework, but may have an initially negativeimpact on productivity. These findings suggest thatwearable computers may play a key role in futurebuilding projects, helping to bridge the current dividebetween design and construction.

summary Designers and design managers are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities of creativity and innovation (Langdon and Rothwell 1985). These two phenomena can be seen as complementary dimensions of a differentiation cycle where design plays a key value-adding role that gradually reduces through commoditisation. However, there is a lack of relevant evidence to explain the link between creativity and innovation. Creativity is increasingly considered as occurring in the interaction between the individual generator of an idea and a group of evaluators (Sawyer et al 2003). However, most studies have regarded the generation of a solution -and not its social impact- as the outcome of the creative process (Runco and Pritzker 1999). Accordingly, computational modelling of creativity has been mainly conducted in a social void (Boden 1999).

summary Project Alliances is a new alternative to A/E/C traditional project delivery systems, especially in the commercial building sector. The interoperable model of Co-design process and systems characteristics that is required to reduce the adversarial nature of most construction projects. Interoperable Co-Design System was just used successfully to complete the Si-soft Research Center of Taiwan. This project-alliancing project was analyzed as a case study to evaluate the validity of the system. Three key paradigms of the Co-Design were reviewed and numerous examples from the management of this project were cited that support the theoretical recommendations of this model. It was concluded that the system use wild client/server network architecture embedded with peer-to-peer agent technology to provide an open, familiar and easily extended co-design system.

title Divergent Thinking in the Construction of Architectural Models

summary The article examines one little understood butubiquitous form of divergent thinking achievedintermittently during the act of drawing or modeling.It is argued that this phenomenon, here calledintermittent divergence, is rooted in a special kind ofinteraction between perception and imagination, andthat this interaction has specific experientialrequirements. Three requirements are defined. Theresulting new theory then provides a framework forthe critical analysis of conventional digital modelingand parametric modeling. Conventional modelingmethods are shown to satisfy the requirements forintermittent divergence, while parametric modelingmethods are shown to undermine them. The articleconcludes that parametric systems, as currentlydeveloped, could inhibit rather than augment thisimportant route to creativity. Additionally, the articlequestions prevailing beliefs about the computersupport of creativity, including the premise thatsketching is an ideal creative medium and the premisethat ambiguity in graphical depictions is key to thesupport of creativity. The theory offers an alternativeview on these issues.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary The influence of built environments on vitality and productivity of users is paramount. Since the introduction of Industrial, Flexible and Demountable Building, domotics, smart buildings, in general: mass-produced, intelligent and learning built environments, tailored built environments are within reach. This has resulted in the need for methodologies to predict short-term and long-term health effects of different built-environment constellations. Epidemiology has developed and validated methods to assess changes in prevalence of inflictions and other unhealthy conditions, as well as the number of healthy and vital years in a life span. After analysing the relationships among building (services) parts and its combinations, health determinants (exposures) and health outcomes, we could adapt the healthy years assessment (DALY) to changes in construction (insulation, air tightness) and building services engineering (ventilation, heating) for dwellings under Dutch conditions. The most important conclusion is that natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation and balanced ventilation not only differ in their average health effect, but even more so in the size of the ranges of these effects. Other systems, such as heat pumps or photo voltaic cells are expensive but will become economically applicable when healthcare costs are taken into account. These outcomes gave valuable clues for product innovation and opened the possibility to model health in relation to built environments. The method could also be applied to quality classification systems for dwellings.

summary While balancing the feasibility of management as well as design quality, design offices with strong focus on design are getting smaller and more compact. Mobility and dynamic information flow are two key issues for information sharing in design studio. In this research, we discussions about these concepts of ubiquitous computing, workflow and information model on small design studio. The goal of this research is trying to use available digital equipments as a ubiquitous device for sharing information dynamically no matter where and when they are. Use such digital equipments as well as server to store information and improve human interaction to achieve better interaction between human and technology. For these issues, we analyze three components of our system—the types of information, the interactive behaviors using roles as a metaphor, and ubiquitous devices that are available for small design studio. Within this research, we propose a system call Ubiquitous Information Flow Tool (UIFO) based on Java and Web technology for testing and reifying the concepts of ubiquitous information flow.

summary The objective of this paper is to develop a methodology in integrated municipal planning in Family Health, using tools such as the Geographic Information System and programs already implemented in towns, to provide the methodology of sustainable and participative urbanization derived from new federal, state and municipal legislations. By the end of the study it was possible to build a data model spacial oriented, located in Tubarão, Santa Catarina, at Dehon and Morrotes suburbs, achieving about 6 thousand people. The obtained results justify the implementaion of a Geographic Information System in health, in order to manage the daily collected data in Family Health Program, optimizing and helping in the application of public politics. summary This research is about the basic methods in making computers understand human behavior in an architectural space in regards to reaction to interaction between the machine and human. Its ultimate objective is to analyze the related technology making this series of works possible synthetically on the basis of information system within architectural territoriality. In the end it is expected to offer a theoretical basis to embody smart space, up-to-date and intelligent architectural space. There are two issues that motivate this research: what are the Housing Context and its Inference System, and how smart space can infer the Housing Context and react with proper response. The Husing Context consists of 1) state of user, 2) state of physical environment, 3) state of computational environment, 4) history of user-environment interaction and 5) architectural territoriality. Especially, spatial information of architectural territoriality is a significant key of HCIS. Spatial divisions and boundaries made of architectural elements or facilities determinate their own micro-territorialities. Ontologies are used to describe the Housing Context predicate. In this paper, we can say that the Housing Context and the Housing Log(history of user-environment interaction, a set of the Housing Context) written by ontologies can be a beneficial model of HCIS. Furthermore, we can develop the Housing Log Databases and its variable applications that have enabled to make simulating and analyzing tool of design, the Augmented Web Presence and the other helpful applications.

summary The aim of this paper is to open a discussion on sharing knowledge and experience in the field of digital preservation between universities which are members of eCAADe organisation. First, paper identifies the importance of keeping digital information alive. Secondly, the key approaches are described, namely: refreshing, migration, emulation. The role of XML is also pointed out. Additionally preservation metadata formats as well as information management (comprised of a set of four inter-linked stages: creation, storage, dissemination and re-use) are discussed. Then, the above-mentioned issues are confronted with the schools of architecture realm. And finally the general, yet fundamental questions are posed: How do we manage the digital data and keep them alive for a long term? What methods do we apply? Do we implement standards? The paper concludes with a suggestion to undertake a survey (for example in the form of a questionnaire) which would serve the eCAADe members.

summary The concept of intelligent architecture started as an interest in the latest integrated building systems operating a single building or facility, so that systems can communicate and exchange information. The communication among these systems allows the right responses and decisions to operate buildings in a productive, economical and convenient way. Communication and information sharing prevents decisions from interfering with other systems’ responses or operation. Systems’ decisions and responses form the responsive architecture that is represented by systems outputs. If intelligent buildings need to receive, analyze, and react according to such processes, responsive ones are required only to receive and react to only one input parameter. Technology and communication systems make it possible to combine several parameters by using system integration and computerization. Technology and computerized systems have enhanced and changed the manner of responses and provided a variety of decisions according to different sources of information. Receiving, analyzing, and reacting are the key criteria of intelligent building that this paper will explore. The input (reception) category covers information detection devices such as temperature sensors. The second category will be the category of analysing devices. The third category, decisions and outputs, will cover both output of sensory devices and forms of reaction and response that emanate from these systems. As a result of the third category, this paper will survey the forms of responses to determine whether or not the kinetic response is a viable choice. The paper will discuss if these three criteria are the only criteria creating intelligent building or if there are others. The paper will give an overview on intelligent architecture and explore in the main criteria determining intelligent building. The paper will then discuss when “responsive” and "kinetic" architecture becomes “intelligent”. The paper will also redefine the intelligent architecture in the light of available technology.

summary This paper examines three key areas of responsive sound interaction in 3D Digital Environments: designing generative sound that derives its composition and relevance from social and physical human interaction within a digital environment; the relation of sonic structure to the digital visual and spatial experience; and responsive, reactive real time sound generation activated by environmental conditions and human behaviours. The primary purposes for responsive sound design are: (1) to provide navigational cues supporting way-finding and spatial orientation; and (2) to provide realtime generative environmental sound that reflects social behaviour in a way that is meaningful and recognisable. The applied contexts for navigational cues and environmental generative sound include online (multi-user), synchronous Virtual Environments and Digital Installation Spaces (e.g. intelligent rooms, virtual reality and immersive environments). Outcomes of responsive sound design include: a trigger system of aural alerts, warnings and guidance; a computational system for generating sound in real time activated by spatial location and social interaction; and an audio (non-visual) tool aiding spatial orientation and way-finding interaction in 3D immersive Digital Environments.

title SGML: a meta-language for shape grammars

summary A shape grammar develops a drawing through a series of transformations by repeatedly applying if-then rules. Although the rules can be designed, in principle, to construct any type of drawing, the drawings they construct may not necessarily develop in the manner intended by the designer of the grammar. In this thesis, I introduce a shape grammar meta-language that adds power to grammars based on the shape grammar language. Using the shape grammar meta-language, the author of a grammar can: (1) explicitly determine the sequence in which a set of rules is applied; (2) restrict rule application through a filtering process; and (3) use context to guide the rule matching process, all of which provide a guided design experience for the user of the grammar. Three example grammars demonstrate the effectiveness of the meta-language. The first example is the Bilateral Grid grammar which demonstrates how the meta-language facilitates the development of grammars that offer users multiple design choices. The second grammar is the Hexagon Path grammar which demonstrates how the metalanguage is useful in contexts other than architectural design. The third and most ambitious example is the Durand grammar which embodies the floor plan design process described in Précis of the Lectures of Architecture, written by JNL Durand, an eighteenth century architectural educator. Durand's floor plan design process develops a plan through a series of transformations from grid to axis to parti to wall. The corresponding Durand grammar, which consists of 74 rules and 15 macros organized into eight stages, captures Durand's ideas and fills in gaps in Durand's description of his process. A key contribution of this thesis is the seven descriptors that constitute the meta-language. The descriptors are used in grammar rules: (1) to organize a set of rules for the user to choose from; (2) to group together a series of rules; (3) to filter information in a drawing; (4) to constrain where a rule can apply; and (5) to control how a rule is applied. The end result is a language that allows the author to create grammars that guide users by carefully controlling the design process in the manner intended by the author.

summary This paper describes current progress of an interview study of architects which considers how these individuals design, focusing on breakthroughs and unexpected discoveries made throughout conceptual design. The study considers creative outcomes that occur while these individuals are not intentionally designing, as well as when they are, with the intention of identifying and evaluating evidence of latent creative activity. While not described in this paper, issues of insightfulness, based on a Gestalt perspective, are also considered in the study. The completed interviews described in the paper suggest that, in order to achieve breakthroughs, designers adopt distinctive methods of disengaging from currently unproductive designing. These may be categorized by degree and type of disengagement, or subsequent re-engagement. In general, disengaging, instead of persisting in designing, when apparently stuck, appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Statements by the interviewees suggest that discoveries during, or just after, times when they are not actively designing, referred to as cold discoveries, are more important than is currently recognized, which is scarcely at all. Statements describing interviewee experiences of discovery and providing indications of the genesis of discoveries are included in the paper. The paper discusses implications of the wide range of perceptions and experiences of each individual. One interesting finding is that individuals appear to experience and appreciate cold discoveries regardless of differences in key aspects of the way they design, described in the paper. This suggests that the genesis of cold discoveries may be as complex as that of discoveries in general.

summary This paper outlines the processes involved in the design of the Smithsonian Institution’s Patent Office Building’s new courtyard enclosure. In 2004, Foster + Partners won an invited international competition to design the new courtyard enclosure in Washington, D.C. Early in the project, the Specialist Modelling Group (SMG), an internal research and design consultancy, was brought in to advise the project team on computer modelling techniques, develop new digital design tools, and help solve the complex geometric issues involved. Throughout the project, computer programming was used as one of the primary tools to explore design options. The design constraints were encoded within a system of associated geometries. This set-out geometry performed as a mechanism to control the parameters of a generative script. The design evolution involved the use of many different media and techniques and there was an intense dialog between a large team and many consultants. The computer script was a synthesis of the design ideas and was constantly modified and adapted during the design process. The close collaboration between architects, consultants, and fabricators was of key importance to the success of the project. This project, now named The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, will complete in late 2007.

title Integrated Planning and Decision-making Processes with 3D-environmental Simulation – The Ruhrallee Tunnel Road

summary The Ruhrallee is a historical arterial road connecting the wealthy south of the city of Essen with the region south of the city. The old sycamore alley gives the low-density residential neighborhood its spatial qualities and its own identity. But the spatial and social potentials are not legible and livable due to the heavy traffic on the existing road cutting the neighborhood. The street cannot assume its spatial function. Therefore the City of Essen and the Federal Government want to build a tunnel road under the existing street, in order to improve the situation for the neighborhood. The Institute for Urban Design and Planning in cooperation with the Institute for Traffic Planning at the University of Duisburg-Essen carried through an evaluation of various scenarios in terms of traffic flow and visual intrusion of the planned tunnel road as well as the refurbished old street space. The main focus of the study is the integration of the tunnel entrance and the proposed road alignment into the existing urban fabric. The 3D-environmental simulation plays a key role in the analyses, the planning and design process, but also in the decision making process. The paper examines the results of the analyses and the various design schemes. It shows that analogue simulation is still an important tool for urban design and other related planning disciplines. But the paper also points out that 3D-environmental simulation can help to make urban design topics more comprehensible for other non planning disciplines.

summary In Hong Kong, about 22% of the total territory‘s area can be classified as built-up area and potential development area. Only 6% of this area is allocated to district and local open space for the 6.8 million populations, i.e. 2m2 per person. Sensible planning of the limited area to enhance the livability and environmental quality hence become a challenging issue for quality urban living of the mass population. However, considering the dynamic relationship of the different performance criteria in the hyper-dense urban environment, one needs to assess various environmental criteria to carry out a balanced planning. Meanwhile, effective tools to evaluate and manage the inter-relationship of these criteria, or indexes for integrated issues indication are not readily available that a reasonable planning is not always easy to achieve. In this paper, the „openness ratio“ concept is introduced for open space planning to provide an integrated index for early stage of planning and design. The new index is expected to provide a comprehensive rating system in considering the environmental performance of open area. It helps to highlight the potential problems in planning or site layout and support the integrated thinking of the four key components: visual sensitivity, urban wind, urban noise and solar heat gain. The concept has shown to be feasible on simple massing study which is applicable in the preliminary planning stage.

summary In this paper we analyse critically early design stages software in its capacity of coping with contextual data at large (i.e. representing cultural, aesthetical context, etc.). We identified 5 categories of early stages software: geometry based graphic editors, evaluation architectural software, generative and shape-grammar based systems, evolutionary systems and other systems. Calling the object under creation during of the early stages a CAD conceptual model, we will investigate to what extend this software allows the architect to experience and represent the context in which a design is situated. Especially we will focus on its capacity to allow interaction, playful interaction on our way to the design. Designers, and particularly architects, interact with the local context similarly to interacting in a game: the context influences the users’ decisions, surprises them and causes permanent changes to their ways of thinking. On the other hand, architects permanently shape and reshape the context, and reduce the context to a protean point of reference. Such behaviour characterises creative thinking that is crucial for the early stage of design. The investigation led us to the conclusions that the effective interactivity with the context needs simple rules, a plain interface and data reduced as simple as possible, especially when interaction with the context is performed during the early stages of a design process. The findings can be used in organising computer environments for early-stage design.

summary By inter-relating CAD and satellite image earth-viewing tools at building specific, city-wide and larger global scales, a wider framework of observation yields insight into the connectedness between built environments and tracking influences between them. The technologies for visualization and analysis at distinct scales are moving towards greater integration. This project demonstrates integration through three case studies, each at a different scale of application, and considers performance issues and implications for more general use. More specifically, CAD, GIS and now Satellite Image Based Earth Viewing systems all have found separate application within Architecture, Urban Planning and Strategic Regional Analysis This paper reports on an effort to test the tighter coupling of these systems on three projects, each at a different scale: (1) urban and regional scale, (2) continental scale, and (3) hemispheric analysis scale.

summary Almost every architect uses analogy while designing. The source of inspiration is nature, technology, geometry, etc., besides the influence of the work of other architects. Analogy in architecture has a close relationship with culture as well. Culture is a dynamic occurrence and evolves by the influence of many aspects such as technological, economical, environmental and social. In the process of design, architects built op knowledge from their own experience and designs, but also from the other designers work. Usually, architects develop this quality and ability during the education, and later by trial and error methodwhile practising the design. This is habitually done based on own conscience, intuition and experience.The developments in ICKT (Information, Communication and Knowledge Technology) as a part of broader technological developments and the ongoing globalisation, influences the culture as a dynamic process and therefore the architecture.. It is necessary to make these influences explicit for their embedding in architectural design education of young professionals. This can be achieved by transferring the resulting knowledge to a knowledge model by using intelligent modelling techniques. The operational aspects of design analogies to be implemented in education, research and the daily practice of designing architects need attention. This paper discusses the operational aspects of cultural analogy in design by using an intelligent computational modelling approach.
