title Documenting the Spatial Design of an Interactive Multisensory Urban Installation
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 771-778
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2005.771
summary The paper documents the design and implementation of an interactive multi-sensory environment (DETOUR) created by the interdisciplinary group VE_Design for an international open-air exhibition in Athens, Greece during the summer of 2004. The paper describes the creative process followed throughout the project and registers how computers, sensors and effectors have been utilised to either facilitate the creation of electronically mediated experiences or support the design. The architectural concept of the multi-sensory installation is analyzed in relation to its potential for creating communicative experiences as well as addressing physical form simulations. Notions such as ephemeral structures, parasites, social space, game as art and communication are discussed. The body – space interaction is investigated, enabling the team to elaborate on a modular construction. Finally, the impact of the work is discussed on the basis of recorded observations by visitors.

title Decision Support System for Modular Houses
source CAADRIA 2007 [Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Nanjing (China) 19-21 April 2007
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2007.x.x9q
summary Presently, only a small percentage of people in the world typically hire an architect to design and build a home which is tailored to their preference. Besides the architect’s fee, clients also need to wait an interminable time for design and construction. Factory-made prefabricated housing systems tried to solve this problem previously. However, most pioneers failed to address the issues of variability and individual needs (Kieran & Timberlake, 2004). Plants closed because they produced more than the market demand, and prefabricated housing provided less flexibility than the traditional stick-built housing. The advanced digital technology makes it possible to communicate design ideas and concepts to others more effectively. The project delivery process leads itself to customization, embodying principles of lean production (Pine, 1993), flexible computer-integrated design interaction with clients, and reduced cycle times; all effecting rapid response between consumers and producers.

title A Parametric Approach to the Design of Vaulted Tensegrity Networks
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 2 - no. 2
summary Significant new research in tensegrity theory and technology encourages tensegrity’s implementation in architecture. A recently developed technology makes possible the rapid modular assembly of deployable tensegrity units, and the construction of alternate curved configurations by re-using the same modules. Although a form exploration method for tensegrity structures already exists, estimating the structure’s new geometry remains a challenge due to difficulties designers encounter in understanding and following the method’s geometric construction process. Besides, the method doesn’t address the geometry of vaulted configurations. This paper presents algorithms that link together the geometric parameters that determine the shape of tensegrity vaults by addressing different design-construction scenarios, and a software code that generates parametric models of tensegrity vaulted structures. The application of the algorithms to the morphological study of a tensegrity vaulted dome, which constituted the main feature of an entry to arecent international architectural competition, is also presented.

title Knit Concrete Formwork
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 213-222
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2020.1.213
summary The manufacture of concrete funicular shells often relies on traditional formwork construction techniques to provide a sculptured cavity for the fluid material to occupy (Bechthold, 2004). While this enables a predictable geometric outcome, the extensive use of timber and/or steel to construct these formworks account for up to 60% of the total production cost of concrete and are discarded after the casting is complete (Lloret et al. 2014). Thus, we propose an alternative method to create prefabricated modular systems out of concrete casted in customised tubular knitted membranes. These perform as a network of struts that can be affixed onto 3D printed nodes of a singular design. Altogether, these components serve as a kit-of-parts that can be transported to site and assembled together to create shell geometries.

title Digital Building Surveying and Planning in Existing Building
source eDesign in Architecture: ASCAAD's First International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design, 7-9 December 2004, KFUPM, Saudi Arabia
summary For planning in existing built contexts, the building survey is the starting point for initial planning proposals, for the diagnosis and documentation of building damages, for the creation of objectives catalogues, for the detailed design of renovation and conversion measures and for ensuring fulfilment of building legislation, particularly by change of use and refitting. An examination of currently available IT-tools shows insufficient support for planning within existing contexts, most notably a deficit with regard to information capture and administration. In ongoing research at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (SFB524- Collaborative research center 524 “Materials and Structure in Revitalization of Buildings”) methods and techniques of revitalisation are being investigated (SFB 524, 2004). A special branch of SFB524- D2 entitled “Planning-Relevant Digital Building Surveying and Information Systems” is investigating possibilities of computer-aided building survey and communication platforms for architects and civil engineers. This paper discusses the concept for a modular surveying system (basic concept, structuring of collected data, separation of geometry from semantic data, and separation into sub-systems) and the prototypical realisation of a system for the complete support of the entire building surveying process for existing buildings. The project aims to contribute to the development of a planning system for existing buildings.

title Information systems for the design and management of transformation in Dutch educational buildings
source LOCAL VALUES in a NETWORKED DESIGN WORLD - ADDED VALUE OF COMPUTER AIDED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, Stellingwerff, Martijn and Verbeke, Johan (Eds.), (2004) DUP Science - Delft University Press, ISBN 90-407-2507-1.
summary Following a period of little change, new didactic approaches coupled to social and technological developments have recently triggered several fundamental modifications in Dutch secondary education. These modifications have extensive consequences for the accommodation of secondary education. The majority of existing buildings is quite conventional in spatial terms and is characterized by limited flexibility and transformability. The paper is a description of a modular yet coherent information system that supports decision taking concerning the transformation of existing buildings. The system consists of spatial and topological representation of a building and its brief, as well as a matching system that connects the two.The purpose of the system is to support the management of the building transformation by providing appropriate input to design and decision activities, as well as by accommodating their output. This is achieved by providing a responsive context for the analysis and evaluation of design decisions from the major viewpoints and with respect to primary aspects. Continuity is a major consideration in this context: appropriate information and feedback should be available throughout the design and construction process but also after completion (in anticipation of further transformations, as well as for monitoring building performance).

title THE RIGHT STORY AT THE RIGHT TIME -- TOWARDS A TACIT KNOWLEDGE RESOURCE FOR (STUDENT) DESIGNERS
source AI & Society, Issue: Online First, July 2004 [ISSN: 1435-5655 (Online)]
summary In response to the lack of systematic study of architectural practice, the Building Stories methodology propounds storytelling as a vehicle for studying active cases, i.e., projects that are in the process of being designed and built. The story format provides a dense, compact way to deal with and communicate the complex reality of a real-world project, while respecting the interrelated nature of events, people and circumstances that shape its conception. With an eye to establishing a valuable knowledge resource of and for the profession, the paper explores how stories can be stored, organized and accessed so as to turn the growing story repository into a convenient instrument for students, educators and practitioners.
