title SGML: a meta-language for shape grammars

summary A shape grammar develops a drawing through a series of transformations by repeatedly applying if-then rules. Although the rules can be designed, in principle, to construct any type of drawing, the drawings they construct may not necessarily develop in the manner intended by the designer of the grammar. In this thesis, I introduce a shape grammar meta-language that adds power to grammars based on the shape grammar language. Using the shape grammar meta-language, the author of a grammar can: (1) explicitly determine the sequence in which a set of rules is applied; (2) restrict rule application through a filtering process; and (3) use context to guide the rule matching process, all of which provide a guided design experience for the user of the grammar. Three example grammars demonstrate the effectiveness of the meta-language. The first example is the Bilateral Grid grammar which demonstrates how the meta-language facilitates the development of grammars that offer users multiple design choices. The second grammar is the Hexagon Path grammar which demonstrates how the metalanguage is useful in contexts other than architectural design. The third and most ambitious example is the Durand grammar which embodies the floor plan design process described in Précis of the Lectures of Architecture, written by JNL Durand, an eighteenth century architectural educator. Durand's floor plan design process develops a plan through a series of transformations from grid to axis to parti to wall. The corresponding Durand grammar, which consists of 74 rules and 15 macros organized into eight stages, captures Durand's ideas and fills in gaps in Durand's description of his process. A key contribution of this thesis is the seven descriptors that constitute the meta-language. The descriptors are used in grammar rules: (1) to organize a set of rules for the user to choose from; (2) to group together a series of rules; (3) to filter information in a drawing; (4) to constrain where a rule can apply; and (5) to control how a rule is applied. The end result is a language that allows the author to create grammars that guide users by carefully controlling the design process in the manner intended by the author.

El presente ensayo pretende indagar, a través del análisis y discusiones sobre diferentes obras literarias, cinematográficas y proyectos arquitectónicos, clásicos y contemporáneos, la relación entre la arquitectura y la literatura a partir de las estructuras matemáticas que los sustentan y cómo estas se han modificado o evolucionado a partir de los cambios tecnológicos de las últimas décadas. Relacionaremos la literatura y la arquitectura contemporánea pos revolución digital, con sus propiedades de nolinealidad y de fragmentación. Nuestra línea de investigación se centra en cuáles pueden ser las aportaciones esencialmente nuevas de la cultura digital a la producción de la arquitectura y la literatura, partiendo de su base estructural. La era informática trae con ella implicaciones que desestabilizan los conceptos tradicionales de espacio y tiempo. Nos preguntamos cuáles son los cambios en las estructuras textuales a partir de la era digital, cuáles son las nuevas estructuras geométricas, cómo influyen estas nuevas geometrías en la arquitectura, en el cine y en la literatura, en esta era de la información y qué rol ocupa la matemática en este cambio. El desarrollo de las ciencias contemporánea ha generado teorías que transforman nuestro conocimiento del universo. Caos, Teoría de la complejidad, Fractales son términos que caracterizan estos conceptos. En arquitectura estas teorías han tenido importancia en la producción de arquitectura "no-lineal" por medio de el uso de computadoras, especialmente en trabajos de arquitectos como Frank Gehry, Zevi Hecker, Greg Lynn, ARM y O.C.E.A.N UK, entre otros. En esta época informatizada la relación de la arquitectura con las demás ciencias (como la física y la matemática), con otros códigos como el lenguaje (por ejemplo en la narración) y con los límites del pensamiento filosófico, pueden hallarse hoy, tanto en el repertorio del deconstructivismo, en el repertorio “minimalista”, como en las abstracciones de los jóvenes nacidos con la computadora, que emulan cintas de Moebius, topologías “no euclideanas”, “estructuras líquidas” o ya en el campo de la literatura formas virtuales como en Calvino o dimensiones paralelas, bifurcadas, etc. como en Cortázar o Borges. Sin embargo, podemos preguntarnos si esta proliferación exuberante es el desarrollo de un organismo sólidamente construido, que adquiere cada día más cohesión y unidad en su propio crecimiento o si, por el contrario, no es más que el signo exterior de una tendencia a un fraccionamiento cada vez mayor, debido a la naturaleza misma de las matemáticas y si éstas no se estarán convirtiendo en una torre de Babel de disciplinas autónomas, aisladas unas de otras, tanto en sus principios como en sus métodos e incluso en su lenguaje. En una palabra, hoy, en esta tendencia, ¿estamos presenciando un nuevo paradigma hacia otra forma de concebir la matemática?.

summary This research proposes to support the reading of physical ambiences by the development of a representational technique which compiles, in a numerical interface, two types of data: sensory and filmic. These data are recorded through the use of a portable array equipped with sensors (Potvin 1997, 2002, 2004) as well as the acquisition of Video information of the moving environment. The compilation of information is carried out through a multi-media approach, by means of a program converting the environmental data into dynamic diagrams, as well as the creation of an interactive interface allowing a possible diffusion on the Web. This technique, named APMAP/Video, makes it possible to read out simultaneously spatial and environmental diversity. It is demonstrated through surveys taken at various seasons and time of the day at the new Caisse de dépôt et de placement headquarters in Montreal which is also the corpus for a SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) research grant on Environmental Adaptability in Architecture (Potvin et al. 2003-2007). This case study shows that the technique can prove of great relevance for POEs (Post Occupancy Evaluation) as well as for assistance in a new design project.

summary This paper discusses the extended use of the Cumulative Index of CAAD (CUMINCAD) - a digital library set up in 1998 serving the CAAD-community as an important source of scientific information with over 6.000 recorded entries published on-line. The aim of this paper is to elaborate a related Citation Index to CUMINCAD - with over 20.000 references - and to provide information on entries with an exceptional high impact in the CUMINCAD database. The importance is determined through its use (citing) in the framework of afterwards published scientific materials. By utilizing graph theory methods extensive citation analyses will be presented illustrating the impact of particular contributions in different research topics.

title Supporting Design Learning with Design Puzzles

summary The design process is a puzzle-solving process. Two groups of researches that share many similarities with Puzzle-solving design process are the process of game-playing and playful learning. The main argument is using the “playing” characteristics to amplify and explore the learning process, furthermore the design process. In addition, puzzles imply playful exploration that utilizes the characteristics of “playing a game” as “solving a puzzle”. Puzzle making and puzzle solving provides an incremental exploration mechanism that is more intuitive for design learning. For understanding and realizing puzzles in design learning, this research is divided into two stages of researches—manual design puzzles and interactive design puzzles. By analysing the outcome from manual design puzzles, this research proposes a framework called (interactive) “design puzzles”. The conceptual and implementation framework of this view of design is elaborated in this paper as well as a particular design puzzle called puzzle collage is described as the realization of design puzzles.

title STUDY ON COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN SUPPORT OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES

summary The research presented in this thesis describes a computer-aided design support of traditional architectural theories. Traditional architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architecture: proportion, symmetry, colour, harmony and so on. In particular, the aesthetic aspect of these theories has been one of many important architectural aspects, and which is concerned with the field of architecture in determining the beauty of architectural form. The most significant role of the traditional theories in architecture is to maintain unity, to avoid chaos and then to achieve harmony in a design, using some specific design principles. However, current technology-guided constructions tend to neglect often the importance of these theories due to the standardization of building elements, due to mechanically-prepared construction and the reducing completion costs, etc. Thus, this research proposes a design support system as a design assistant that gives an intelligent advice on architectural design, using analytical design- and ordering- principles of traditional theories for the optimization of the architectural design from the aesthetic perspective. To evaluate the aesthetic quality of an architectural design, this system is implemented in the AutoCAD environment, using the AutoLISP. It is applied so as to explain and develop aesthetic qualities of a design. Designs proposed by this system include optimum designs, which are based on the traditional architectural theories, and new ones which can be in future connected to information models. To do this, the definition of information about building elements is accomplished by using the neutral format EXPRESS and EXPRESS-G for such application systems. The results of the application system are presented, such as the easily generating and quickly conceptualising of an object model, the checking of the aesthetic value of the design during the various design phases, the helping to find direction during rational searching for a solution. The user can easily appreciate the usefulness of the proposed system as a set of tools for searching for rational architectural aesthetics and formal solutions at different design-stages. It is to be hoped that a new "traditional" fundamental of architecture, such as the proposed system, incorporating CAAD systems, will find its place among new technological methods in the AEC industry and so help to bridge the gap between the value of traditional architecture and CAAD systems.

summary Using Virtual Architecture (VA) as a general scheme for representations to sustain the reflection activities involved in the design process can help students to initiate creative design ideas. Because of its implicit abstract nature, VA can be used, to represent original ideas or processes, or well-known architectural theories to articulate design ideas. Furthermore, VA as a mean of expression, turn out to be a source of inspiration for students who perceive it as medium with very few limits with which to develop, explore and express their design intuitions. A recent collaborative edesign studio experience is reported to illustrate the benefit observed. Using three examples out of ten student projects, we show how designs and design process have been characterized by those virtual representations. In fall semester 2004, the edesign studio took place between the Schools of Architecture of Toulouse and Université Laval in Québec. VA was both an academic and a studio topic at Laval while the other school students had a traditional design task to tackle, namely the rehabilitation of Chapou University Residences for students in Toulouse. Students from both schools composed each edesign team. In addition, three common architectural themes were web-documented and introduced to both classes: room, as defined by Louis Kahn: “a space which knows what it wants to be is a room”; color, as an architectural medium in dialectic with structure; and body-space relationships, as articulated by Gilles Deleuze and its projection to cyberspace. From the edesign studio results, we are arguing that virtual architecture should be looked at not only as new domain to be investigated by architects and taught in academic studios but also as a new medium of design to develop and explore design intuitions through virtual representations.

summary SwarmCity is being developed as a micro-simulation model, simulating the location-choice behaviour of a population of households, retailers, firms, developers, etc. reacting to an urban plan. The focus of SwarmCity lies –in a first phase- on the decision-making procedures of households, conceptualised as a series of three processes: awakening, search and choice. The methodology used to implement these processes makes use of life-time utility and decisionanalysis trees. The final model should work as a scenario-analysis tool, allowing planners, developers, retailers and municipalities to test interventionproposals, to evaluate legislations, to measure the attractiveness of services, to quantify residential mobility, etc. This paper illustrates the state of the art in household location-choice modelling and introduces a first attempt in developing a conceptual framework.

title COMPUTER DESIGN OF REPEATING HYPERBOLIC PATTERNS

summary From antiquity, humans have created 2-dimensional art on flat surfaces (the Euclidean plane) and on surfaces of spheres. However, it wasn't until about 50 years ago that designers have created art in the third "classical geometry", the hyperbolic plane. Inspired by a diagram from the mathematician H. S. M. Coxeter, the graphic artist M. C. Escher became the first person to design such patterns, performing all the needed constructions laboriously by hand. In order to exhibit the true hyperbolic nature of such art, the pattern must exhibit symmetry and repetition. It seems natural to use a computer to avoid the tedious hand constructions performed by Escher. This was our goal: to design and implement a computer program to create repeating hyperbolic patterns.

This special interest on multifunctional buildings . where residences, commercial and business areas share the same space . is based on the fact that they represent a new paradigm of living in the city, brought by the Industrial Revolution, which is being reconsidered nowadays as a solution to the revitalization and reoccupation of the big cities central areas. The result of this work will be a book supported by a website that will help to understand the urban development of São Paulo and the meaning of this kind of buildings in the context of the city.

summary The architecture graphics presentation, showing three-dimensional space designed by the architect from bidimensional elements, besides being insufficient. But, just the three-dimensional presentation of this space does no guarantee its total visualization. It is necessary a way in which the observer can visualize and interact with it. For that reason it is needed to use the digital space. But, it can not be limited to the presentation of three-dimensional objects, because it brings the possibility of communication and information transmission through cyberspace. So, an investigation was done through bibliographical references and questions to architects to study how and what the graphics elements should be demonstrate for the correct visualization. Next, with those information, it was developed a prototype site to the visualization of the internal spaces of a design used as an example and after that this prototype was verified in a group of architects and a group of non-expert people.

summary The social and economic context of architectural co-operative projects does not support the experimentations with dedicated tools. Therefore, we chose to achieve functional validations and operations of communication about tools usefulness with the use of scenarios. The scenario techniques are usually used in computer science to capture user’s needs and to validate software specifications. After having analyzed the different contexts of scenario usage in computer science, we characterize the specific context of the use of tools in cooperative activities. Then, we report some experiences of functional validation, of tool demonstration and of usefulness validation based on the use of scenarios. We explain in each experience the objectives and their implication in the scenario definition.

title A strategy for complex-curved building design:Design structure with Bi-lateral contouring as integrally connected ribs

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary Design Media is the tool designers use for concept realization (Schon and Wiggins, 1992; Liu, 1996). Design thinking of designers is deeply effected by the media they tend to use (Zevi, 1981; Liu, 1996; Lim, 2003). Historically, architecture is influenced by the design media that were available within that era (Liu, 1996; Porter and Neale, 2000; Smith, 2004). From the 2D plans first used in ancient egypt, to the 3D physical models that came about during the Renaissance period, architecture reflects the media used for design. When breakthroughs in CAD/CAM technologies were brought to the world in the twentieth century, new possibilities opened up for architects.

summary The project deals with supplementation of fine art components to the newly designed square in front of the main railway station and their integration into the public space to provide a good system functioning in the contemporary ground-floor level. Several students of Faculty of Architecture, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, have elaborated this idea under the leadership of B. Kubinsky with the technical support of P. Kardos during the years 2001 and 2002. The supplementation had been planned in two parts: first each student has designed his own object of art and created the model of his piece. Then, in the second part, the quality and relevance of each object was verified by the spatial endoscope in the laboratory of P. Kardos .

summary Tsuyoshi Sasada, known as Tee to so many of us, died on 30 September 2005 at the age of 64 after a long illness.Tee retired from Osaka University in 2004 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age but retained his association as Emeritus Professor.At the time of his death he held appointments as Honorary Professor, National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan) and Expert Researcher, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. He had been with Osaka University since 1970, having earned his bachelor, master and doctoral degrees at Kyoto University. In 1988 he was appointed Professor in Osaka and established his laboratory, known as the Sasada Lab, from which over 200 students have graduated.

title A Parametric Approach to the Design of Vaulted Tensegrity Networks

summary Significant new research in tensegrity theory and technology encourages tensegrity’s implementation in architecture. A recently developed technology makes possible the rapid modular assembly of deployable tensegrity units, and the construction of alternate curved configurations by re-using the same modules. Although a form exploration method for tensegrity structures already exists, estimating the structure’s new geometry remains a challenge due to difficulties designers encounter in understanding and following the method’s geometric construction process. Besides, the method doesn’t address the geometry of vaulted configurations. This paper presents algorithms that link together the geometric parameters that determine the shape of tensegrity vaults by addressing different design-construction scenarios, and a software code that generates parametric models of tensegrity vaulted structures.The application of the algorithms to the morphological study of a tensegrity vaulted dome, which constituted the main feature of an entry to arecent international architectural competition, is also presented.

summary People used to illustrate our ideas by hand and now we use machines. But we still can’t search through all the world’s drawings and ideas by proportion, aesthetic, and a list of measurements and space requirements. Suppose there was a new way to communicate with our machines that would allow design and other subtle relationships to be measured, compared and perceived using the design intent and viewers interpretations themselves as descriptions? In the future, using a system like this will eventually create so many designs, interpretations, patterns and spaces to choose from the questions become: how would design be perceived within these virtual spaces; and how might our aesthetics change due to this new dialogue with machines?
