summary Sensorial richness is essential in the design process, yet digital design tools do not respond to this need. Tangible interfaces offer an opportunity for interaction with design computing systems to explore means of supporting a wider range of experiences. In this paper we look at implementations of tangible interfaces through a framework based on the concept of affordance. We conclude with a brief introduction to experimental tangible interfaces that have been developed in order to carry out collaborative user evaluations in a design studio setting and evaluate these in the same framework.

summary In this paper we report on recent developments in ARTHUR: an approach to support complex design and planning decisions for architects together with the simulation of pedestrian movement and the integration of existing CAD tools on the design table. Following a brief introduction, past and current work that has taken a similar approach will be reviewed. Next we describe a scenario that integrates agent-based simulations of pedestrian movement with space creation, and then give an overview of the system before finally discussing findings related to recent user evaluation studies of the system. This paper suggests that the integration of simulated pedestrian movement on the design table, while going through a cycle of reflection-in-action, plays a vital role in exploring possible design solutions and encourages new and different ways of thinking about design problems.

summary Immersive virtual environments have received widespread attention as providing possible replacements for the media and systems that designers traditionally use, as well as, more generally, in providing support for collaborative work. Relatively little attention has been given to date however to the problem of how to merge immersive virtual environments into real world work settings, and so to add to the media at the disposal of the designer and the design team, rather than to replace it. In this paper we report on a research project in which optical see-through augmented reality displays have been developed together with prototype decision support software for architectural and urban design. We suggest that a critical characteristic of multi user augmented reality is its ability to generate visualisations from a first person perspective in which the scale of rendition of the design model follows many of the conventions that designers are used to. Different scales of model appear to allow designers to focus on different aspects of the design under consideration. Augmenting the scene with simulations of pedestrian movement appears to assist both in scale recognition, and in moving from a first person to a third person understanding of the design. This research project is funded by the European Commission IST program (IST-2000-28559).

summary Virtual and Augmented Reality have become common tools in the architectural design process. This technology assists all participants in gaining planning certainty. To interact with the digital models, different input methods are used and adapted by the authors like keyboard, on screen menu, tangible interface, tablet PC and PDA. While every input method has certain advantages and disadvantages, currently tablet PC and PDA best cover the users’ general needs. A usability test shows that reviews with tablet PC are faster compared to other interfaces.

summary Keyframing, Morphing, Inverse Kinematics; they are all animation technics which have been explored by diverse groups of architects, academics and students, searching for new horizons in the proyecting process development, pushing forward the present limits of proyecting methodology. We define this project starting by the explorative use of animation tools as experimental variables in reformulating our design processes. Data input have been traditionally carried out using classic interfaces such as keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet, among others. Despite this is accepted by many as the standard way of communicating with machines, we think this is still very far from the ideal way to design and model new proposals. In this context we propose to investigate a new way to approach to the computed aided modelling process, questioning and reformulating traditional interfaces in user .machine communication.

summary The field of computer graphics has developed significantly over the last decade. However, most current CAD systems support only the two most common input devices: a mouse and a keyboard. In addition to that few, if any, systems make it easy for the user or the programmer to add and use new input devices. People tend to use both hands to manipulate 3D real world objects; one hand is used to orient the object while the other hand is used to perform some operation on it. The same thing could be applied to computer modelling in the conceptual phase of the design process. Accordingly, the 3D object can be easily and intuitively changed through interactive manipulation of both hands. This paper investigates the manipulation and creation of free form geometries through the use of interactive interfaces with multiple input devices. It demonstrates that using multiple input devices can offer many opportunities for form generation resulting in visually rich forms. However, the experimental results demonstrated that regulations are needed to avoid developing inefficient two-handed interfaces.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has made most schools, universities, and gathering spaces fully virtual. Commonly used communication platforms such as Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams are limited in recreating physical interactions and offer mostly static interfaces with limited occasions for spontaneous encounters. This project creates a space that seeks to address this issue, first through the digitization of familiar physical spaces, and then through their augmentation via WebXR technologies[1]. A gamification strategy is adopted, where users can virtually learn, collaborate and socialize through personalized avatars within a dynamic and multi-sensorial digital environment. In this paper, we present a completed prototype that is currently being tested at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The school of architecture has been digitized and experientially augmented thanks to an asymmetrical system that offers rich modalities of interaction through different platforms. The project builds upon the wide experiential potential of digital platforms, otherwise not possible in reality, and implements a customized multi-modal user interface (Reeves et al. 2004).

summary Contemporary advanced virtual reality systems use different stereoscopic 3D visualization technologies. In this study, VR systems from one projection wall up to VR systems with six projection walls have been evaluated. Besides the optical properties tested with architectural 3D models, the user interfaces have been analyzed with reference to exact and intuitive control abilities. Additionally, the workflow of an early architectural design process with CAAD generated 3D models and VR visualization techniques was analyzed. It turns out that current VR systems exhibit shortcomings in visual and spatial representations, as well as tools for an early design process.

For this purpose, we developed a new multi-projection display system, D-vision, which has hybrid screens. D-vision is a kind of new virtual environment system that has high immersion and high resolution display performance with multi-modal interfaces. In our system, the user can experience the high sense of presence through the self-walking behavior to move and force feedback manipulation of objects with the high-resolution image created from the tiled-projection system that is composed of twentyfour projectors.

summary The subject of this article starts from studies that come being developed regarding the use of Mnemonic structures in relation to the conception of spaces, architectural projects, and its correlations with the images languages and the signs and its occurrences, applications and uses in spacial uses. Great part of the current examples of memorization structures applications in spacialities design are related to experimental virtual environments, mainly tied with the artistic production and/or the studies of design of user-computer interfaces. Our research suggests a new look at this subject, considering to investigate, beyond the virtual spacialities, applications in the concrete and hybrid spaces. In this article we propose to argue the subject from two metaphors related to the theater: the metaphor proposal for Brenda Laurel in Computer as a Theatre and the boarding of Giulio Camilo [ 1480-1544 ] in its Theater of the Memory.

summary This paper proposes a new technique for designing spaces, called Drafted Virtual Reality (DVR), to be used in interior, architectural or industrial design. It proposes the construction of virtual panoramic environments through the QuickTime VR (QTVR) Panorama platform (Apple), starting from sketches made by hand using traditional pen-on-paper techniques. To construct these drawings, the designer uses the computer to build a graphic panoramic template. Using this technique, the designer takes advantage of both approaches, the capacities and possibilities of the computer using VR (3D environments, interaction and real-time), and those of free-hand sketches (abstraction, inaccuracy and ambiguity). These last elements are essential for the first steps of the design process in contrast to the conventional techniques of 3D modeling interacting with mouse and menus. In the development of design computer solutions, it is important to know the user well. However, most researchers propose systems very different than how designers actually work. The DVR doesn’t try to simulate analog tools by computers (digital pens), but takes advantage of hand drawn sketches created using analog techniques that are already known by designers and improved by VR visualization. A review of the implication of this technique on the design process. Not only is the technique fast and easy to learn, the results show that the designer can express their individuality and the idiosyncrasies of their personal sketches; important elements hard to achieve with conventional 3D modeling techniques. Finally, this technique can be perceived as a new paradigm in the way we work with computers in design. The limitations of interfaces and usage of current technology are seen when the designer outputs information from the system to process using other analog techniques. The proposed solution marries the existing competencies and techniques of the designer with the advantages of the computer processing. The quality of the virtual experience of this technique is consistent with current designer’s intentions within the traditional design process.

summary This paper describes a computer application that can organize 3D objects along an axis and also redistribute those based on a set of constraints or existing patterns as selected by the user. In particular, the focus of the paper is the two dynamic Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs): the Constraint Arrangement (CA) and the Pattern Arrangement (PA). For these, we use the Soft Computing Techniques . Kohonen.s Self Organizing Map (SOM) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). In both the cases, the application outputs an axial organization of predefined 3D objects which, either adhere to selected constraints or follow patterns set by prior design. The application is implemented, tested and its results are demonstrated using buildings systems.

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. summary The juxtaposition of the temporal element on traditional architecture has created the possibility of a non-hierarchical, .nomadic. space (-Deleuze) which calls for an intriguing phenomenological experience of the inhabitants, in relationship to their architectural space. The paper explores some current theories which propagate these ideas of virtual reality/realism in an attempt to understand the contradictions and connections they make with the .tangible. world. Drawing from Kant.s position that .Nothing that is predicated on its real existence is considerable. the author searches for a more universal understanding of what these virtualities want to be- in this era of diluted tactility. The reason for such questions is not an attempt at ad hoc compartmentalization of these ideas, but more to find a place and meaning in the inevitable evolutionary pattern. In conclusion, the author postulates that it is only when these scripted virtualities are conditioned through such frames of reference will they cease to be merely .temporal. spaces.

summary We investigate the creation and reinterpretation of an architectural design process using a variety of digital and physical media. We study how tools for design influence perception, comprehension and creation of spatial volumes within both Virtual Environments (VE) and physical realms. We explain how designers translate spatial volumes and communicate architectural design ideas by using VE and conventional models. In a series of reinterpretation of architectural meanings we examine the translation of threedimensional design from virtual to tangible depictions and vice versa. We conduct a design-studio in order to explore issues of quality, understanding, communication and building of architectural compositions. VE can be an environment for design distinguishable and facilitating reality. We test this statement by interchanging both realms to that extent that the boundaries of each one are nearly dismantled. Virtuality and reality are both used in alternative formand design-finding exercises in order to gain an overall conclusive design.

summary Crossing over a variety of digital and physical media, creation and representation of an architectural design process can influence perception, comprehension and conception of spatial volumes within both physical and virtual environments. These tools then transform and translate the design process from virtual to tangible portrayal of architectural design and vice versa. Artists and designers pushed media to new interpretations of the media themselves and with that of their artwork. Using these potentials and translate them by employing current technologies we embarked to new understanding and communication of architectural gestalt, form finding and design process. Interchanging and merging design environments from reality to virtuality to an extent that the boundaries of each one are dismantled, both realms can be used together in an overall process that leads to alternative form findings and resulting designs.

summary By merging a range of digital and physical media, the architectural design process is enriched by different perceptions, comprehensions and conceptions of spatial volumes within both physical and virtual environments. The use of digital media often confines the design process to only the digital realm; in this class, students moved fluidly back and forth from digital to physical using digital tools in unorthodox ways. These different media transformed the design process from a tangible portrayal of architectural design to a virtual portrayal, and vice versa. With this interchanging and crossing over of design environments from reality to virtuality the limits of each one are dismantled, both realms can be brought together in an overall process that led to alternative form findings and resulting designs. This work lies in the tradition of artists who push media to explore new interpretations both of the media themselves and of their artwork.
