summary Digital modelling techniques allow for representations of reality. In the same time, evolutions in computing allow present personal computers to handle digital representations of whole historic cities. We need to assess the nature of operating restriction so that the result obtained can be used as a scientific product, while still of a size compatible with current devices. possibilities. Concepts such as urban spatial perception, fidelity to historic research sources, and urban theory applied to uncertainty, will underpin hypothesis for the virtual renaissance of cities of our past. We present a digital model of Granada (Spain), based on a morphological hypothesis of the XIX century. It is based on specific theories to achieve typological models of buildings which original morphology is uncertain and on techniques for the geometrical optimisation and creation of scenes. The paper also presents the sources used, e.g. romantic travellers drawings, historic local maps, old photographs, engravings, literary descriptions.

summary Visual Perception of depictions is the basis of the act of imagining employed in visual design thinking of design process, and consequently in design-idea exploration. Digital-media use plays a significantly important role in these exploration processes. The underlying assumption of the research is that Visual Perception affects Design-Idea Exploration processes. The research investigates and sheds more light on the processes of Visual Perception, which architects use in mass exploration of design ideas. The research is a part of a series that presents a Java program based on creating 3d shapes, in order for architects to explore initial shapes related to design ideas. The initial version of the program, which is a part of another research, creates 3d shapes through controlling their dimensions and insertion point. Functions of painting, controlling the light position, and shading are added to the program that is presented in this research. The research discusses Design-Idea Exploration and Visual Perception and their correlation. The added features of the program that is used as a design medium are also presented and linked to the investigated areas.

summary The professional perception of the architectural space characterizes the most advanced level of the architect’s mastership. In the article the virtual modeling is regarded as an effective way of forming the professional perception of integrity of architectural space. Computer technologies bring together bi-dimensional and three-dimensional languages of modeling and thus they help the procedure of movement of consciousness from the plane to volumetric images and back to the visual and mobile. They help to carry out the level-by-level analysis of the multilevel structure of an architectural reality in the mode of active dialogue. The process of interaction of consciousness with the model becomes accessible to studying. There appears an opportunity to manage this process with the aim of forming perception.

summary The notion of .scale., in architecture, has a variety of meanings. In general, it refers to a graduate serie of symbolic elements that hold the place for real elements. It stands in close relationship with the notions of .model. and .representation.. A thorough discussion of the concept of scale should start with an analysis of the way in which we perceive natural objects, specially architectural objects. This perception appears as continuous but is not: there are some stages that can be identified as belonging to some .natural visual scale.. Traditional graphic scales do not relate clearly with this natural scale due to old technical problems. So the discussion proceeds towards the notion of multiresolution and how the concept of scale should be developped to cover properly the characteristics of virtual models, attempting to provide a conceptual framework for this discussion.

summary Previous research (Bourdakis et al, 2012; Papasarantou et al, 2013) dealt with the problem of creating information visualisation systems capable of combining historical data of MUCIV's database and developing strategies that embed the non-spatial data in spatial models. The database was primarily designed as an experimental flexible spatio-temporal configuration of dynamic visual structures generating a variety of narrations through interaction.The attempt of producing a legible configuration driven by a number of criteria, led to the proposition of two different arrangements, namely the linear and radial array. The aim of this paper is to present the next step on the visualization after redefining both the way that thematic axes and data are visualized and arranged/scattered. Alternate configurations are investigated, based also on theoretical analysis on the conceptualization and perception of information visualization systems (Card et al 1999, Ware, 2004).

Some of these phenomena of the human visual system will be used to introduce an illustrative rendering style for three-dimensional line drawings with enhanced depth cuing to visualize spatial properties of three-dimensional objects. The additional purpose of this paper is to inspire the study of human perception more deeply to derive new non-photorealistic rendering methods that can enhance the visualization of complex spatial concepts and its three-dimensional characteristics.

summary The value of material in architectural practice is determined not by its character but by functional performance and economy. In early modernist thought, part of this motivation was to liberate construction from the ‘burden’ of aesthetic speculations and return it simply to the concerns of building. Any artistic agenda became embedded in the economic and productive processes of the project. Authenticity emerged out of the need to focus on the essentials and reject the superfluous. However, this demand for truth in materials has long since been compromised by the climatic requirements of building enclosure. Most contemporary practice in architecture is derived from principles of cladding where the ‘essential nature’ of a complex building requires concealment. The communication of the building is expressed in the refinement of the layers that make up the surface. This shift from the emphasis on making and the idea of ‘material’ in architecture, to one of perception and ‘materiality,’ has an important corporeal dimension that parallels the material aesthetic practices developed in art and sculpture in the 1960s. In this sense, Fabrication carries an ‘untimely’ dimension. This paper proposes to look at the work of a broad range of architects, both well-known and not so well-known, in light of these artistic-based approaches to materiality. Digital fabrication opens a new chapter on this debate and it remains to be seen how this economically useful approach to construction changes, once architects investigate the visual characteristics of materials and methods of fabrication.

summary The impact of colour on human perception of space is a known fact. Spatial simulation and evaluation without the consideration of colour would be rather simplified, as evaluation and reactions to viewed environments are very much conditioned by the observed colour combinations. As one reaction to this challenge in the last decades we witness the development of various models in colorimetry that try to predict the appearance of colours. These predominantly mathematical tasks however still tell us too little on how to proceed when we need to specify, evaluate or communicate about complex colour scenes in real space with stress on appearance and perceived colour. The question concerns both simulation and evaluation using a variety of tools, as well as the mapping and analysis of exiting environments. Such tools are subject of this EAEA conference, and it is in this context that this contribution aims to put forward some of the challenges that we are still facing in hope, that we may work towards common procedures or solutions. Focus is on both visual and instrumental working methods with the aim to contribute to bridging the gap between theory and practical application, ideas, imagination and reality.

summary Computers in designing are usually considered as a tool for preparing technical documentation, storage and managing information, coordinating of flow of design process, modelling and all kind of visualisations (renderings, animation, VR models). At the early design stages, when an idea of the form is created, computer is not used very often. The reason for this is that traditional computer drawing is too completed to be used at this stage. In new methods of supporting creativity, computer should be used for creation of less precise, unpredictable but more inspiring images. This method are based on the thesis that emotional elements have a great affect on the decision making process in designing. Intuition, unpredictability and no logic are the essence of creativity in the selection of associations. Confirmation of this statement we may find in many theories of creativity (theory of incubation elaborated by Wallas, genploration (Finke, Ward and Smith), redundant generation (Lem), synectics (Gordon)). All these theories emphasize the role of unpredictable associations and metaphors in creativity. Process of metaphorisation is characteristic for our era and plays important role in creative process. That’s why we need the new methods of graphic computer and non-computer transformation, which allows us a fuller exploration of design metaphors. The final conclusion is built on the thesis that too precise tools promote cause to decrease differences.

title STUDY ON COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN SUPPORT OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES

summary The research presented in this thesis describes a computer-aided design support of traditional architectural theories. Traditional architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architecture: proportion, symmetry, colour, harmony and so on. In particular, the aesthetic aspect of these theories has been one of many important architectural aspects, and which is concerned with the field of architecture in determining the beauty of architectural form. The most significant role of the traditional theories in architecture is to maintain unity, to avoid chaos and then to achieve harmony in a design, using some specific design principles. However, current technology-guided constructions tend to neglect often the importance of these theories due to the standardization of building elements, due to mechanically-prepared construction and the reducing completion costs, etc. Thus, this research proposes a design support system as a design assistant that gives an intelligent advice on architectural design, using analytical design- and ordering- principles of traditional theories for the optimization of the architectural design from the aesthetic perspective. To evaluate the aesthetic quality of an architectural design, this system is implemented in the AutoCAD environment, using the AutoLISP. It is applied so as to explain and develop aesthetic qualities of a design. Designs proposed by this system include optimum designs, which are based on the traditional architectural theories, and new ones which can be in future connected to information models. To do this, the definition of information about building elements is accomplished by using the neutral format EXPRESS and EXPRESS-G for such application systems. The results of the application system are presented, such as the easily generating and quickly conceptualising of an object model, the checking of the aesthetic value of the design during the various design phases, the helping to find direction during rational searching for a solution. The user can easily appreciate the usefulness of the proposed system as a set of tools for searching for rational architectural aesthetics and formal solutions at different design-stages. It is to be hoped that a new "traditional" fundamental of architecture, such as the proposed system, incorporating CAAD systems, will find its place among new technological methods in the AEC industry and so help to bridge the gap between the value of traditional architecture and CAAD systems.

summary Using Virtual Architecture (VA) as a general scheme for representations to sustain the reflection activities involved in the design process can help students to initiate creative design ideas. Because of its implicit abstract nature, VA can be used, to represent original ideas or processes, or well-known architectural theories to articulate design ideas. Furthermore, VA as a mean of expression, turn out to be a source of inspiration for students who perceive it as medium with very few limits with which to develop, explore and express their design intuitions. A recent collaborative edesign studio experience is reported to illustrate the benefit observed. Using three examples out of ten student projects, we show how designs and design process have been characterized by those virtual representations. In fall semester 2004, the edesign studio took place between the Schools of Architecture of Toulouse and Université Laval in Québec. VA was both an academic and a studio topic at Laval while the other school students had a traditional design task to tackle, namely the rehabilitation of Chapou University Residences for students in Toulouse. Students from both schools composed each edesign team. In addition, three common architectural themes were web-documented and introduced to both classes: room, as defined by Louis Kahn: “a space which knows what it wants to be is a room”; color, as an architectural medium in dialectic with structure; and body-space relationships, as articulated by Gilles Deleuze and its projection to cyberspace. From the edesign studio results, we are arguing that virtual architecture should be looked at not only as new domain to be investigated by architects and taught in academic studios but also as a new medium of design to develop and explore design intuitions through virtual representations.

summary Architects have been opening up onto cyberspace for more than a decade now. In terms of disciplinary issues, at stake is our ability to inhabit this new space as .designers. and not just as spectators. In the mid 90s, two theories engaged in a major confrontation. The first valued the virtual dimension of architectural space (W. J. Mitchell, City of Bits, 1995), the other valued the tectonic dimension and its constructive poiesis (K. Frampton, Studies in Tectonic Culture, 1995). Although divergent in their view of architecture.s role in the future of our technological societies, both theories revealed aspects of our relationship to the contemporary body that were, and today remain, inseparable. Where Mitchell.s book clearly intends to establish cyberspace as a new playground for architects, giving convincing examples of the programmatic mutations of modern spatiality, Kenneth Frampton.s work, Studies in Tectonic Culture, reexamines the constructive culture underlying the modern conception of space. Neither a simple history text nor a collection of technical poetry, this latter work is a manifesto developing a set of materialist ethics for the discipline of architecture. This "rappel à lordre" to resist the increasing dematerialization of architecture closes tentatively with Le Corbusier.s classic metaphor of the acrobat: The architect, he said, must not look for truth in extremes. Rather, he must struggle constantly to maintain balance. .Nobody asked him to do this. Nobody owes him any thanks. He lives in the extraordinary world of the acrobat.. Following Le Corbusier.s advice, and in consideration of current and recurrent tensions between the virtual and the tectonic, what can we say today of such a delicate equilibrium?

summary Addressing the issue of building re-use, this paper reports on the development of a re-design tool, which aims at helping students and novices (and even experienced architects) in understanding design decisions that have steered existing re-design projects. Furthermore the tool tries to support designers in using this understanding in their own design projects. The paper starts by situating the re-design tool within the overall research setup, and continues by motivating the observations that have led to developing this tool. The core of the paper describes the re-design tool itself and illustrates it with a concrete example. Finally, the tool is framed within the wider context of (architectural) design research, so as to explore where the tool accords or collides with generally accepted design theories.

summary The juxtaposition of the temporal element on traditional architecture has created the possibility of a non-hierarchical, .nomadic. space (-Deleuze) which calls for an intriguing phenomenological experience of the inhabitants, in relationship to their architectural space. The paper explores some current theories which propagate these ideas of virtual reality/realism in an attempt to understand the contradictions and connections they make with the .tangible. world. Drawing from Kant.s position that .Nothing that is predicated on its real existence is considerable. the author searches for a more universal understanding of what these virtualities want to be- in this era of diluted tactility. The reason for such questions is not an attempt at ad hoc compartmentalization of these ideas, but more to find a place and meaning in the inevitable evolutionary pattern. In conclusion, the author postulates that it is only when these scripted virtualities are conditioned through such frames of reference will they cease to be merely .temporal. spaces.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary During 19, 20 and 21 centuries theories and new ideas became important things and marked the science and the culture. Questions about truth and reality, reason and knowledge, real and virtual they are mixed like center of the debate between the rational and the relative. Like this, the fiction has been an element constituent of our reality and an instrument for the construction of the truth by means of the language. The fiction represented by the interactive images initiated a research dedicated to the technical images in the construction from the own reality. Images of the human body draw, for example, called pos-human approach the concept of ciborgue in the midia.

summary Location modeling, which generally has influence on location-aware applications, is a critical and interesting aspect. In the ubiquitous computing, location modeling has been discussed as one of fundamental research subject, because a location is a very essential element of contexts and useful information for other applications related with ubiquitous computing. Especially, location modeling in architectural space should be defined through the comprehension of the physical environment, because the users' (or objects) location does not only mean numerical coordinates, but also refers to the situation related to users' (or objects) physical contexts. In other hands, location model for architectural space should be based on the simplification of complicated physical environment, the consideration of corresponding various changes, and also the definition for the relationship of spatial information. Traditionally, those issues have been actively studied in the fields of CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) research and could used effectively for ubiquitous computing system. This paper proposes the location model and its utilization method which can be applied on making the ubiquitous computing system in the architectural space based on CAAD theories. At the end of the paper, we present a CAAD system, called “Vitruius”, in order to define architectural spaces appropriately and manage them easily for the ubiquitous computing environment.

summary Exploring design ideas, through two dimensional and three dimensional forms, is the basis of design exploration and visual design thinking during the design process. Imagining how drawings and models (be it manual or digital) will be presented in reality is the essence of visual design thinking. By the beginning of the 20th Century, architecture has become more three dimensional in design exploration and in representation. This transition to three dimensions makes the processes of visual design thinking more related to digital media. The nature of media, utilized by architects, affects design-exploration processes. The research investigates both the processes of visual design thinking and the interrelation between visual design thinking and digital media, in order to shed more light on how digital media should be introduced to students of architecture.

title Embodiment and Illusion: The Implications of Scale as a Cue for Immersion in Virtual Environments

summary This paper examines the extent to which the issue of scale impinges on our sense of immersion in virtual environments. We consider perception from the point of view of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, and describe a study involving extended interviews of a small number of subjects who were presented with static, moving and interactive images of spaces. We test a series of propositions about scale cues, and speculate on the wider phenomenological issues of expectation, metaphor and play.
